Cat: BEGIN 08. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Let's Talk (4:48)
  2. Aight (6:20)
  3. Cut The Paste (4:56)
Review: James Holroyd's Begin project has been responsible for some of the most magical Balearic music of the last seven years. We say last seven years; Let's Talk is actually the first Begin EP since 2014. It gathers together three tracks that sit somewhere between dubbed-out re-edits and original productions. The title track sets the tone, wrapping jazzy guitar solos, becalmed piano motifs and spoken word snippets around an intoxicating, jazz-fuelled downtempo groove. "Aight" sees Horoyd getting busy with delay-laden old school house vocal snippets, woozy chords and a languid broken beat rhythm, while standout flipside "Cut The Paste" is a trippy, pitched-down chug-fest rich in ghostly chords, fuzzy synth stabs, mutilated modem noises and a druggy arpeggio style bassline.

  3. Soft Light (7:06)
Review: The development of Aussie Tornado Wallace from a promising deep house producer to a masterful maker of Balearic beats has been a joy to behold. Since first hooking up with Beats In Space and the similarly inclined ESP Institute last year, he's begun to develop a trademark sound that's warm, humid and musically rich. He's still capable of laying down chunky dancefloor rhythms, though, as the hypnotic new age house bumper "Soft Light" - the flipside of this second outing for Lovefingers' acclaimed imprint - so deftly proves. Really, though, it's when he gets more adventurous - such as on the wonderfully evocative Jonny Nash collaboration "Time of Nectar" and decidedly tropical lead cut "Circadia" - that he really comes into his own. Highly recommended.

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.

  4. Gayana - "Since The Night" (Klar&PF remix) (5:25)
Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Cat: MFM 010. Rel: 25 Jan 16
  1. On Retinae (West version) (5:13)
  2. On Retinae (East version) (5:13)
Review: Amsterdam archivalists Music From Memory dig up yet more gold from a byegone era, with this 12" squaring their focus on the Japanese synth poppers Dip In The Pool. The Japanese group comprising Miyako Koda and Tatsuji Kim first emerged in 1986 with Silence, its debut for venerable UK indie Rough Trade, and remain active today. The focus of MFM's attentions are the two East and West versions of "On Retinae" that bookend the act's 1989 LP Retinae which both feature the clarinet playing skills of Mariah bandleader Yasuaki Shimizu. As you might expect, the East version features Japanese vocals from Koda whilst the West has her singing in English; otherwise they are identical and a strong contender to close out any night of dancing. Cheers to Abel, Tako and Jamie for this one!

Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

  1. The Soniferous Garden (14:12)
  2. Rainfall On Red Earth (16:06)
Review: Auntie Flo's Huntleys & Palmers residency in London has helped the artist to both mature his sound as a producer, and get his name across to a vast house audience looking for good vibes. And it's with these sorts of release that they've found it. The man is back but this time for the incorrigible Sofrito, who are branching out with this new Super Singles subsidiary imprint, mashing up contemporary dance with something veritably tropical. "The Soniferous Garden" is an excellent warm-up tune, or the sort of groove you stick on to send your audience left of field, thanks to its slow, chuggy groove, gorgeous instrumentation, and subtle Afro lyricism. "Rainfall On Red Earth" travels at a similar tempo, except that here the mood has grown more pensive, and Auntie Flo offers another stunning piece of music that is perfect for both dancing or straight-up vibing.

Review: Late last year, previously unheard outfit Bongo Entp released a digital-only debut album via Kenneth Bager's Balearic-minded Music For Dreams EP. Here, they make their first appearance on wax via a set that showcases both tracks from that samba-soaked set, and a string of new remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the heady, Azymuth-influenced samba-goes-jazz-funk shuffle of opener "Foto Felita Do Avaio" and synth heavy, dub-flecked warmth of "El Rey Do Pollo", to the near ambient, slo-mo dreaminess of "Lujon". Carrot Green turns that latter track into a mid tempo Balearic house shuffler, while Selvagem contributes a jaunty, dub-house interpretation of "Foto Filita Do Avaio" that's arguably the EP's finest moment.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: Believe it or not, but Phil Mison's been churning out the killer new age-come-downtempo gear since '01, and that's not exactly something to be taken lightly. The producer has seen it all and done it all, and has no doubt been an inspiration to the plethora of artists making so-called 'balearic' beats these days. The name Cantoma is now synonymous with quality output, which can also be said for his personal label, Highwood Recordings. This latest EP, Talva Lumi, is an unadulterated beauty in every sense of the word, its subtle waves of euphoria kicking into motion with the suave, angelic Apiento mix of "Talva Lumi", followed by a more stripped-down instrumental. On the flip, "Just Landed" is remixed by Reverso 68, who drops a little bump of house magic onto the groove, and the soothing, boogie-friendly chiller that is "Top Banana". Gorgeous stuff.

On the A we have Gunnar Wendel under his Kassem Mosse guise laying down a blissful, twinkling church-like serenade while OTL's own Black Point continues the twinkling, emotional theme but from a twitching, densely layered jungle perspective. Review: Aksel Schaufler's roots homage continues with the third instalment of Golden Ravedays. Once again it's another luxurious extensive adventure on both sides. "1984" takes the A, sliding in at a modest 11 minute length wrapped up in warm, warped Jim Noir-esque organs, subtly developing into a breakbeat-driven wall of sound. "Pocket Love" takes a longer jaunt where the drums are the only constancy amid unpredictable ebbs and flows of synths lapping and overlapping with a slight hint of Holdenist chaos. Another golden chapter of two-sided immersion.

Review: There was much excitement surrounding Granit Records' recent reissue of Claude Rodap's sole album, 1982's synthesizer-heavy fusion of traditional Martinique styles and (then) contemporary electronic music, Syn-Ka. Now Rush Hour is getting in on the act, issuing three more obscure Rodap productions - this time made around the turn of the Millennium - on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the rainforest melodies, spacey synth-bass and gentle tropical rhythms of "Hiwa", to the glistening, guitar-laden Caribbean Balerica of closer "Zouklove". The track that sits in between, the denser, jazzier, solo heavy "Paco", is also superb.

  4. The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Review: Thanks to the hard-to-define nature of the Balearic sound that inspired it, Aficionado Recordings can pretty much release whatever they like - providing, of course, that it fits their hazy, horizontal and loved-up ethos. It's also why they can release this surprise EP from Welsh "super-group" Bendith, whose five tracks explore the more pastoral, string-drenched end of the folk spectrum. Via a range of tracks built around acoustic guitar motifs, lilting strings, twinkling piano lines and Welsh-language vocals, Bendith deliver an EP as breezy and beautiful as anything Aficionado has released to date. It's undeniably traditional in feel - there's not a synthesizer or drum machine in sight - but that only adds to its alluring nature.

Review: The Orb's 2016 set, C.O.W (Chill Out World) was almost universally acclaimed as a sofa-friendly return to form; a genuine ambient opus that owed more to Brian Eno than Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the rework that kicks off this remix 12" - a wonderfully woozy, head-in-the-clouds affair by The Field - has no dancefloor pretensions whatsoever. It's very dubbed-out and hypnotic, of course, with undulating melody lines stretching out over layers of field recordings and barely audible samples. Elsewhere, Dave DK delivers loved-up chord progressions, fizzing synth lines and eccentric house beats, while the Joerg Burger Dschungeloper remix of "5th Dimensions" gets the right balance between rhythmic hypnotism and glistening ambient bliss.

Review: According to International Feel boss Mark Barrott, Music For Presence is an attempt to broaden the evocative, downtempo sound he's been pursuing for the last few years. There's certainly a wider palette of influences on show, with opener "Shopenhauer's Garden" adding fluid synth solos to a backing track that doffs a cap to 1970s German synthesizer greats such as Tangerine Dream. The humid and sticky ambience of "Emile" sounds like Finis Africae jamming with Steve Hillage, while "Mokusho" blends cascading, life-affirming synthesizer motifs with spaced-out electronic beats and glistening chords. Closer "Lysander", with its bubbly electronics, cascading trumpet and impeccable piano work, could have come from the studio of Music From Memory regulars Gaussian Curve.

Review: The latest volume in Music From Memory's impressive 12" series of reissued obscurities takes us back to late '80s St Louis and the hard to find world of Workdub. Formed of Virgil Work Jnr. and Nicholas Georgieff, Workdub's output was restricted to a pair of highly limited albums recorded between 1989 and 1992. All four tracks are taken from these two albums, and offer a lucid, ear-catching fusion of early ambient house electronics, experimental oriental synth-pop, alien jazz breaks, spacey Detroit influences, and stuttering drum machine rhythms. It's a hard-to-place but wonderfully evocative mixture, arguably best displayed on standout opener "Island Breeze". That said, the curiously Balearic, Tangerine Dream influenced "Caravan" is rather tasty, too, while its' ambient alternative mix, "Caravan Revisited" is almost overpowering in its' simple beauty.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

Review: In the summer of 2016, HOVE went to France for two weeks to start writing and recording his new EP Portes du Soleil. Together with his girlfriend, they spent two weeks at Le Pascalet, a house in the woods of the Cevennes, right outside the small village of St. Etienne Vallee Francaise. Equipped with a sampler, drum machine, some synths, effect pedals and a mic for field recordings, he built the foundation of the four songs that would later become the EP. All the songs started out as live-jams but the goal was to create different moods and patterns inspired by the surroundings of the forest, long walks, playing petanque and plenty of Pastis. The tracks were later finalized back home at HOVE's studio in Zurich.

"Frontier" is a real sunlight-breaking-through-the-clouds track with its crisp guitar strums cutting through the heaviest of clouds, toeing a line of sedate-but-strong instrumentation behind it. "Coming In" runs a housier code with its additional layers of darker synths and more dominance on the lolloping drums. Highly versatile.

Review: Agogo's latest release features a quartet of artists remixing tracks from Mop Mop's fine - if a little overlooked - 2016 album Lunar Love. There's naturally a noticeable dancefloor focus, with Sub Modo delivering a pleasingly bass-heavy rework of Anthony Joseph hook-up "The Serpent" that also boasts some shuffling, intricately programmed, Innervisions style tech-house percussion. Also impressive is the trippy, late night voodoo of DJ Khaleb's version of "Totem", which is rich in tribal drum hits, feverish audio textures, chopped-up organ stabs and rolling grooves. If you're after something a little more horizontal, the Nicola Cruz re-make of "Totem" bobs along at a slower tempo, at the same time making more of Mop Mop's original, Afro-influenced instrumentation.

Review: Rudy (aka Robin Lee from Faze Action) makes a welcome return on FAR, taking in the atmosphere of sunnier climes.

The title tracks opening cascades and swirling synths fall into an easy Balearic groove, with singing melodies, exotic marimbas, a chugging synth bass and production echoing a mix of Compass Point, Grace Jones et all on holiday in Europe, whilst setting the scene for the EP. The 2nd track is introduced by hypnotic tones against analog synth arpeggios and haunting synth solos, invoking the "Sky Goddess". Back down to earth on the flip side is an invitation to sail down the "Shimmering Coast", with its relaxed guitar groove and keyboard flourishes all underpinned by a stunning 80s sounding bass line. Dropping anchor at "Fortune Lagoon", we are treated to some of Rudy's personally designed analog keyboard sounds, which mange to challenge yet retain tropical warmth.

Finally live chorus bass introduces us to "Body Wave" which manages to fuse easy French Disco with jazzy Fender Rhodes hooks. By Nature is a reflection of white washed houses, palm trees, refreshing coastal beaches and yacht parties. Don't forget your sunglasses and tanning oil!

  2. Black Cream (6:21)
  3. Finderlohn (4:06)
Review: Having finished releasing 12" samplers for their superb sophomore set See You When You Get There, Session Victim return to the Retreat label they co-run with a trio of brand new tracks. There's a brilliantly dense and humid feel to the undulating bass, cowbell-heavy beats and jaunty melodies of opener "Summer Games", which is as sticky, sweaty and life-affirming as the title suggests. Turn over for "Black Cream", a typically jazzy and percussion-heavy slice of blissful deep house that makes great use of an extended, chord-heavy breakdown. Finally, the German duo explores the downtempo side of their trademark sound with "Finderlohn", whose lazy flamenco guitars, chopped-up beats and thickset chords suggests an attempt to capture a Balearic mood.

  4. Can I Say (3:10)
Review: After a splendid, sought after 12" on Pyramids Of Mars, an already expensive edits split EP with Red Axes and his highly original and acclaimed self released debut album "Don't Touch My Sister", Rouge Mecanique delivers a stone cold classic Ep for Discos Capablanca. The psychedelic steady muscle of 'All Will Be Changed' aims to destroy visionary dance floors. 'Sans Scrupules' is the most surprising acid banger you will likely hear this year. 'Ampedusa / Xaver' defies description and its mutant sound could evoque ecstatic early minimal house references, kraut and concrete music. 'Can I say' is simply put the most elegant, languid way to say goodbye to an Ep that exudes sheer brilliance and character. Housed in hand silkscreened sleeves with art by Capablanca. Timeless applies here.

Review: Since its release on 10" in 1983, this Prince Douglas Levy co-production has been a regular on all-time top Wackies lists. Imperious, prodigal music-making - melodic, organic and improvisatory - with deep and fluent dubbing, and top-grade Sugar in full flow on the herb superb.

  1. Cool Nights
  2. Golden Days
Review: The Imogen label launched back in September with a pair of Ilija Rudman remixes of London Acid Jazz favourite Brand New Heavies. This second release sees them change tack somewhat, adopting an archival focus to dig out two tracks by Croatian hero Ilan Kabiljo. Known mostly for his '90s work, Kabiljo comes from legendary Croatian music stock - his father was composer and musician Alfons 'Alfi' Kabiljo. This Expression 12" sees Imogen dig through the Ilan archives for two rare and unreleased tracks records in 1990, with A side cut "Cool Nights" a supple midnight saunter through jazz funk that highlights Kabiljo's compositional class. "Golden Days" is just as good as sounds like a loving homage to the '80s.

Review: The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer, B. G. Baarregaard, channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Review: Gop Tun are a Brazilian label and party crew operating out of Sao Paulo, and they stride into their third release with a pair of tracks that are likely to establish them on the map even more than they are already. This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

Review: Normally found on the Making Love In Public Spaces label, Kasra V steps out with the first release on Feelings Worldwide to throw down some essential, mysterious tracks with a muscular exoskeleton but a trippy, trancey soul. From the proto throb of "Fantasy" to the crafty breaks on "Pris", this is a record steeped in a classy execution and knowing reference points without ever sounding derivative. The mood remains surprising and immersive at every turn, not least on mystical killer "Myth" which winds up getting remixed by spiritual acid veteran Dream 2 Science. It's a perfect punctuation on a truly special slab of dance music with depth.

  4. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
Review: Question: How do you follow your last release that featured high profile remix treatments from Messrs Harvey Bassett and Kenneth Dixon Jnr? Los Angeles trio Pollyn have decided to answer that quandary by showing their own strength in the art of reinterpreting other's music on this rather party friendly burgundy twelve inch which features tracks from Liquid Liquid, Gorillaz, The Eurhythmics and Paul Simon. Sal P's ledgendary NYC troupe have their instantly recognisable "Optimo" given the Pollyn treatment, the trio succeed in stamping their own woozy psychedelic intentions while remaining faithful to what's a punk funk classic. A similar approach is taken to the Gorillaz track "DARE" which has Mr Albarn's high pitched tones taken on by singer Genevieve Artadi while keeping Shaun Ryder's participation intact - nice rhythmic switch up on this too. On the flip, "Take Me To Your Heart" by The Eurhythmics gets a punk funk cover from Pollyn that could feasibly find a comfortable home on a DFA B Side while little Paulie's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" gets a subtle rolling re-edit.
