Review: Danish producer Milan Zaks has largely impressed since releasing his first cassette of dusty, rave-influenced downtempo grooves last year. Modern Species, his first outing for Firecracker Recordings, is easily his most expansive and impressive release to date. Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

  4. Stardriver
Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

  4. Evolove Version (7:36)
Review: We are, of course, always keen to receive any new music that comes through from the Don't DJ collective - particularly on their own Diskant imprint - but we'd been waiting on this appearance for Japan's EM Records for a long while now. There's just something unashamedly right about this collaboration, from the music itself right down to the artwork and the rest of the like-minded artists that reside on this wonderful catalogue. The Don't DJ brothers have gone deeper than previous releases here, starting with the Nippon-minded dubbiness of "Hyperspace Is The Place", followed by the earthier, more vibrant melodic textures of the wavy "Forest People Plot". On the B-side, "Hyperspace Is No Place" bangs out a steady kick drum over deep, aqueous bleeps washed amid a sparse ocean of ambient delight, and "Evolve Version" provides the 'housiest' moment on this four-tracker in the form of an ethereal bombshell with a subtle balearic charm. Wonderful - you can't miss it!

Review: Peculiarly, Fasaan offshoot Chalice has lain dormant since the label's first release appeared in stores back in 2014. Happily its Swedish parent label has decided to pull out all the stops for this comeback 12", gathering together six tracks from artists based across Europe and beyond. At six tracks deep there's not enough space to go into detail about every track, but suffice to say they're all loose, warm, quirky and generally lo-fi in feel. Highlights include the dreamy analogue synth-funk of Ruf Dug's "Cassette Boogie", the poignant, emotion-rich synth-wave warmth of Fahcrur Riaz Hazbullah's "Muriam", the clicking beats and intergalactic synth flourishes of "Heina" by Ruutu Pois and the frankly foreboding loose-house creepiness of "II Y A" by Dublin's Compassion Crew.

Review: Japan's disco don Matthew Bruce aka Max Essa is back with a three part track, namely Themes From The Hood, The Cad & The Lovely, on one side of vinyl, plus two more on the flip. Recording for a decade, this prolific producer has big hits like "Panorama Suite/Uptown Vibration" that have long been in Hell Yeah boss Marco Peedoo's record bag. The story goes that Essa first approached the label with a bunch of tracks until a good correspondence alchemy ensued and together the artist and label decided to put out the most timeless 12" possible. This is music that will calm busy minds now and forever.

Review: The first Money $ex release of 2017 is something of a woozy, soft touch treat. It comes from German beat-maker Dexter - not to be confused with the Dutch electro legend - and contains as sextet of drowsy, melodious, sun-kissed workouts. It sounds like it may have been made with an MPC and a small but perfectly formed collection of analogue synthesizers, but don't quote us on that. The producer's specialism seems to be the fusion of languid chords, tumbling melody lines, spaced-out post hip-hop beats and carefully chosen samples. Of course, there are a few more upbeat moments jotted throughout - the brilliant soundscape synth-funk of "Bells of Lorenz" and deep house inspired boogie shuffler "Off Shore" being the best examples - but for the most part it's a pleasingly horizontal affair.

This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Review: It's been relatively quiet from Trujillo recently, but now the Venezuelan producer casts out a transmission from his Berlin base to let everyone know that all is well and we can get back to the business of smooth grooving. "Everytime I Think Of U" speaks to the Balearic tendencies embedded in the producer's aesthetic, with a reflective vocal swirling amidst dreamy guitar chops and swooping synth warbles of a strictly blissed out nature. Telephones does a sterling job of remixing the original version into a warm and funky deep house jam peppered with organic delights.

Review: This breezy, hand-stamped 12" comes with little or no information about the producer (or producers) behind it. It's hard to know whether it's an original production - admittedly blessed with samples from an old, Balearic-era groover - or a re-edit. Either way, there's something deliciously sun-kissed and saucer-eyed about the A-side title track, where synthesized horns, jangly acoustic guitars and an elastic dub disco groove provide plenty of thrills for those seeking White Isle disco flavours. The Idjut Boys style dub disco influences naturally come to the floor on the flipside "Noche (Dub)", which also boasts some languid flamenco guitars, fluid piano lines and rush-inducing electronics.

  4. 1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

The original is a deep soul jam reminiscent of Roy Ayers' Ramp project, while the Tall Black Guy's remix gets more of an R&B swagger on in style. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: Earthboogie - aka London soundsystem owners Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson - make their wax debut with three raw, groove laden disco blends. Digging deep into both afrofunk and Italo roots, there's a universal musical language that grabs you physically across all three cuts. "Mr Mystery" sits between Booker T & The Mgs and Daniele Baldelli while "Route Ten To Interzone" is an energetic township jam with added synth sheen. Finally we're seduced by the Balearic weaves, ripples, twangs and horns of "The EB Theme". A rainbow of vibes from start to finish, this one's hard to put down.

  2. On Retinae (East version) (5:13)
Review: Amsterdam archivalists Music From Memory dig up yet more gold from a byegone era, with this 12" squaring their focus on the Japanese synth poppers Dip In The Pool. The Japanese group comprising Miyako Koda and Tatsuji Kim first emerged in 1986 with Silence, its debut for venerable UK indie Rough Trade, and remain active today. The focus of MFM's attentions are the two East and West versions of "On Retinae" that bookend the act's 1989 LP Retinae which both feature the clarinet playing skills of Mariah bandleader Yasuaki Shimizu. As you might expect, the East version features Japanese vocals from Koda whilst the West has her singing in English; otherwise they are identical and a strong contender to close out any night of dancing. Cheers to Abel, Tako and Jamie for this one!

Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Review: Having previously plied their wares on Is It Balearic and Los Grandes, Spanish nu-Balearic sorts Two Mamarrachos pop up on another suitably horizontal imprint, dependable Leeds label Joe's Bakery. There style is sun-kissed by druggy, with opener "Al Andalus" offering an exotic, chugging blend of foreboding, low-slung grooves and Arabic synthesizer melodies. "Super Disco Dancer" delves deep into the box marked "experimental analogue electronic disco", with heady, spaced-out synthesizers sprawling all over a typically atmospheric, cosmic groove. "Let Feel Higher" is, arguably, the most Balearic of the three, with warm acoustic guitars and delay-laden gospel vocal samples creating a suitably toasty, glassy-eyed mood.

Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Review: While floors still burn from "Mapping" on Cin Cin earlier this year, "I Can Still See You" sees Gacha return to his more ambient, introspective and eclectic pastures on this extensive show-stopping, sense-blurring five track EP. "River" glistens with gentle ebbs and flows, "Saysea" insists with a lush jazzy break while "Reflection" trembles with just the right tech tendencies without getting too heavy for itself. Elsewhere "Through The Glass" is a straight cinematic trip back to the world he forecast in Two Sunsets while "Advice" closes with a moment of broken beat poetry. As long as Gacha Bakradze can see us, we can hear him. This has to be a good thing.

Review: There was much excitement surrounding Granit Records' recent reissue of Claude Rodap's sole album, 1982's synthesizer-heavy fusion of traditional Martinique styles and (then) contemporary electronic music, Syn-Ka. Now Rush Hour is getting in on the act, issuing three more obscure Rodap productions - this time made around the turn of the Millennium - on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the rainforest melodies, spacey synth-bass and gentle tropical rhythms of "Hiwa", to the glistening, guitar-laden Caribbean Balerica of closer "Zouklove". The track that sits in between, the denser, jazzier, solo heavy "Paco", is also superb.

Review: The development of Aussie Tornado Wallace from a promising deep house producer to a masterful maker of Balearic beats has been a joy to behold. Since first hooking up with Beats In Space and the similarly inclined ESP Institute last year, he's begun to develop a trademark sound that's warm, humid and musically rich. He's still capable of laying down chunky dancefloor rhythms, though, as the hypnotic new age house bumper "Soft Light" - the flipside of this second outing for Lovefingers' acclaimed imprint - so deftly proves. Really, though, it's when he gets more adventurous - such as on the wonderfully evocative Jonny Nash collaboration "Time of Nectar" and decidedly tropical lead cut "Circadia" - that he really comes into his own. Highly recommended.

Review: If you've ever got a few hours to spare, check out Legowelt's discography - the Dutch analogue fetishist is astonishingly productive (and, of course Legowelt is simply one of Danny Wolfers' many pseudonyms). Here, he adds another label to the growing list with a surprise appearance on Andrew Morgan's Washington D.C-based Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint. Unsurprisingly, Wolfers explores many of his favourite themes on Puzzles in Life, merrily skipping between melodic, bubbling deep house (the excellent title track), slo-mo Detroit futurism ("Video Phone To Space"), super-slo stargazing boogie (the superb "Cruise Till The Sun Shines") and woozy, intergalactic ambience ("Los Alamos Motel"). In many ways, this is an unusual turn from PPU, but it's a calculated gamble that's more than paid off.

From IIB we have Coyote's Sin Distracciounes, an upbeat sunkissed dancefloor meditation featuring the blissed out Flamenco guitar of long time collaborator Saro Tribastone. Futurboogie's Christophe remixes and chops up the guitar and adds some gypsymenesque organ stabs and layers of keys. Futureboogie's Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read drop the funky guitar heavy Restless People. Sublime chugging beats and a beautiful vocal refrain imploring 'Slow It Down' creating a laidback house monster. IIB's Max Essa puts his remix right in the middle of the dancefloor with straight up house vibes and extra percussion.

Review: IIB's latest release is an EP from The clandestino crew. First track is a slo mo cosmic melodic acid dub. A beautiful early evening trip. This is remixed by the Beat Broker who adds a few sublime uplifting west coast sprinkles. The first track on the B side is a solid disco tinged house beauty with synth stabs subtle acid undertones claps and a great sample. The final track is Beyond the Sun. A mellow eastern tinged sundowner featuring another great sample. This EP really captures the original IIB sound and philosophy. A real gem.

  3. Disclosures (Don Carlos remix) (8:49)
  4. Disclosures (Coyote Uber remix) (5:30)
Review: Is It Balearic..? latest offering is from Klik Records man Glass Coffee. Disclosures is a hypnotic slice of European deep house. Laid back electric pianos and marimbas layered over a tight house groove. Dance Naked the second track follows the same kind of pattern upping the tempo slightly, building slowly towards a deep bass drop and arped string line. Again more trademark layers. Full on dancefloor action. The B-side brings one of the greatest Italian house producers ever to IIB. Don Carlos' remix is really something special. A relentless subby double bass sounding b-line relentlessly underpins this delightfully atmospheric excursion into deepness. The Coyote remix slows down the pace and dons its flip flops for a little tropical shuffling. IIB hitting the spot again.

Review: Is It Balearic releases a debut EP from Clandestino's Joe Morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. The title track Golden Tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. Late afternoon sundowner vibrations. The second track Bayou has touches of Sueno Latino about it., an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. On the flip the first track Light Of The Moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. Warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. Finally we come to Mpondo Theme. Sounds of nature , Kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. A proper EP this covering all shades.

Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Review: Having made his name under the Chet Faker alias, Nick Murphy has decided the time is right to revert to using his given name. Missing Link is the Brooklyn-based Australian's first EP since ditching the alter ego, and is arguably less conceptual than some of his work. He begins with the experimental, electronic indie-pop fuzziness of "Your Time", before going all psych-rock on the acid-fired blast of "Bye". He brilliantly joins the dots between woozy, sun-kissed Balearica, yearning electronica and crunchy indie-pop on "I'm Ready", while "Forget About Me" - which boldly flips from quiet, string-laden contemplation to low-slung punk-funk midway through - is undeniably one of Murphy's most impressive tracks to date. Jaunty, funk-fuelled EP closer "Weak Education" isn't too shabby, either.

Review: Sao Paulo's SELVAGEM drop a masterful double sider for Universal Cave 004. "Tudo Bem" is sunny, soulful AOR bliss. A tribute to a favorite Brazilian musician and an update for contemporary rotation. "Luanda" is hypnotic, psychedelic tropicalia. Truly digging deep, SELVAGEM give Universal Cave a taste of the Forward Deep & Free sounds of Balnearico from Brazil. Balnearico is the fusion of balearic and "balneario," the Portuguese word that is synonymous with beach.

Review: Kinfolk head to Philly for Kinfolk004, welcoming committed vinyl rummager and top notch DJ Billy Werner into the fold. This two track 12" is the apparent end product of that rare occurrence where budding producer sends label unsigned tracks that are actually decent. "Kick & Flutter" is a blinky blue sunrise of a tune, innocent, euphoric and, dare we say, totally Balearic... not retro but timeless. "Where the sea meets the Stones" treads a similar line but with a more incessant acidic undertone. Both perfect for chasing sunrises and sunsets... As is traditional you get a Soft Rocks remix to boot... murmured voices, gentle pulses and psychedelic repetition. Did any of the original make it in there? Just relax and enjoy it...

Review: Oh yes, puristic disco-not-disco truth from the Spacetalk outlet, right here. They're only on their second release to date, and they already seem to have an effective formula for winning over the hearts and minds of both dancers and critics. Avant Garde, a German house outfit known for having produced some pretty badass music back in the late 90s, receives the makeover treatment, first by Jaz & Party Dad, who turn the original version of "Everybody's Lover" into a groovy, bass-heavy boogie monster with a mild pace but a punchy drum roll, and then in the form of a much murkier dub take by Mudd. Don't underestimate the power of Spacetalk. More to come from this tidy new label soon, we hope!

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.
