Review: Having worked with the likes of Don Cherry and Laurie Anderson, there's little doubting the credentials of Ramuntcho Matta. Emotional Rescue have tapped him up for some truly outernational jams that sport African percussion, skronky jazz tones and an engaging minimalism that's hard to resist. The fretless bass and exotic animal cries of "Ecoute" are especially appealing, while the squelchy sound design in "O Clapo" may well do funny things to all who hear it. It's a startlingly original record that serves as a perfect introduction to a lesser known figure in leftfield music with a great heritage behind him.

  3. Take Me Back (5:38)
  4. Long Board (5:35)
Review: The Is It Balearic? train just keeps on rolling as Coyote proffers up even more refined grooves from the heart of the dreamy island dance. "Deep Italian" channels the spirits of classic sensual deep house that clearly nods to the likes of Vibraphone Records for inspiration, while "Fresh Hope" creates a more bewildering experience with interloping melodies and a more insistent beat underneath. "Take Me Back" uses plucked string motifs to weave its own enchanting message, while "Long Board" gets a more plush line in synths to work to round the EP out.

  1. Alfred (7:54)
  2. Blood On Your Hands (5:39)
Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: Noted disco house label Whiskey Disco kick off a new series with the talents of regular contributor B. G. Baarregaard. The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Cat: VST 2142. Rel: 07 Nov 16
  1. The Spoils (feat Hope Sandoval) (5:39)
  2. Come Near Me (feat Ghostpoet) (4:56)
Review: Given their famously slow work rate, Massive Attack have been relatively prolific of late. This is their third 12" of the year, following the collaboration-heavy Ritual Spirit E.P (which featured, amongst others, estranged former band member Tricky), and the limited edition Dear Friend. The two tracks showcased here also feature guests. Hope Sandoval joins 3-D and Daddy G on A-side "The Spoils", adding her evocative, fragile vocals - think Liz Fraser on "Teardrop" - to the Bristolian duo's lusciously orchestrated trip-hop backing track. On the flip, things get altogether darker, as Ghostpoet narrates us through another of the pair's paranoid, late night moments. It's arguably the stronger of the two tracks, which is saying something given the overall quality on display.

  1. Dish (vocal) (7:59)
  2. Dish (dub) (6:53)
Review: Denmark's Music For Dreams have done exactly the right thing by signing Apiento & LX to their roster. The two produces haven't put out countless releases, but what they have produced has been much to our liking, and always present on the best independent labels out there. This new single from the duo, the ambiguously named "Dish", is the perfect hybrid, a tune that sits somewhere between house and electronica, but the mid-point is beautifully lo-fi in its approach, making this fall under the umbrella terms of 'balearic'. The vocals of the A-side are absolutely non-intrusive and, in fact, add to the charm and charisma of the harmonies locked tightly into this majestic tribal groove; you can imagine how perfectly lush the dub version sounds. This is a true tip, if we ever heard one!

Review: ** Running Back Repress for the Terje Fans **Terje Olsen doesn't release many records, but when he does they tend to be pretty special. This surprise EP for Running Back is his only his fifth original single in seven years, but it's arguably his best yet. "Ragysh" is devilishly simple, a naggingly hypnotic house/ electronic disco head-nodder that builds to a gasping climax of chic, intergalactic melodies. It's partnered by "Bonysh", a dubwise beats track that ekes maximum thrills from little more than ever-changing percussion. B-side "Snooze For Love" - available in dancefloor and downtempo versions - continues the stargazing theme, offering up an uber-Balearic mix of bleep melodies, dozy chords and sleepwalking percussion.

  4. Dengo (6:26)
Review: Having established themselves as purveyors of fine, Middle Eastern-inspired fare, Disco Halal has decided to apply their magic touch to South American music, with the assistance of specialists Selvagem and Carrot Green. As usual, the emphasis is on blending obscure source material with original music and production. This works particularly well on "Vandre", where an acoustic samba number is turned into a bubbling, Balearic house gem via glistening electronics, synthesized marimba lines and metronomic beats. Marvin and Guy go even further on their remix, turning in a blissful deep house chugger. Flip for the low-slung Brazilian disco-funk of "Dengo" and "Ossain", a misty-eyed, sunrise house number blessed with all manner of (sampled) Brazilian instrumentation.

  2. Sans Scrupules (5:28)
  3. Ampedusa (9:20)
  4. Can I Say (3:10)
Review: After a splendid, sought after 12" on Pyramids Of Mars, an already expensive edits split EP with Red Axes and his highly original and acclaimed self released debut album "Don't Touch My Sister", Rouge Mecanique delivers a stone cold classic Ep for Discos Capablanca. The psychedelic steady muscle of 'All Will Be Changed' aims to destroy visionary dance floors. 'Sans Scrupules' is the most surprising acid banger you will likely hear this year. 'Ampedusa / Xaver' defies description and its mutant sound could evoque ecstatic early minimal house references, kraut and concrete music. 'Can I say' is simply put the most elegant, languid way to say goodbye to an Ep that exudes sheer brilliance and character. Housed in hand silkscreened sleeves with art by Capablanca. Timeless applies here.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

Review: Normally found on the Making Love In Public Spaces label, Kasra V steps out with the first release on Feelings Worldwide to throw down some essential, mysterious tracks with a muscular exoskeleton but a trippy, trancey soul. From the proto throb of "Fantasy" to the crafty breaks on "Pris", this is a record steeped in a classy execution and knowing reference points without ever sounding derivative. The mood remains surprising and immersive at every turn, not least on mystical killer "Myth" which winds up getting remixed by spiritual acid veteran Dream 2 Science. It's a perfect punctuation on a truly special slab of dance music with depth.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

Review: Oh yes, puristic disco-not-disco truth from the Spacetalk outlet, right here. They're only on their second release to date, and they already seem to have an effective formula for winning over the hearts and minds of both dancers and critics. Avant Garde, a German house outfit known for having produced some pretty badass music back in the late 90s, receives the makeover treatment, first by Jaz & Party Dad, who turn the original version of "Everybody's Lover" into a groovy, bass-heavy boogie monster with a mild pace but a punchy drum roll, and then in the form of a much murkier dub take by Mudd. Don't underestimate the power of Spacetalk. More to come from this tidy new label soon, we hope!

  4. Disclosures (Coyote Uber remix) (5:30)
Review: Is It Balearic..? latest offering is from Klik Records man Glass Coffee. Disclosures is a hypnotic slice of European deep house. Laid back electric pianos and marimbas layered over a tight house groove. Dance Naked the second track follows the same kind of pattern upping the tempo slightly, building slowly towards a deep bass drop and arped string line. Again more trademark layers. Full on dancefloor action. The B-side brings one of the greatest Italian house producers ever to IIB. Don Carlos' remix is really something special. A relentless subby double bass sounding b-line relentlessly underpins this delightfully atmospheric excursion into deepness. The Coyote remix slows down the pace and dons its flip flops for a little tropical shuffling. IIB hitting the spot again.

Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

Review: As it approaches the end of its' first decade, Claremont 56 continues to lead the way when it comes to atmospheric, sun-kissed Balearica. This latest chunk of horizontal goodness comes courtesy of Essex-based Statues, a trio who caught label boss Paul 'Mudd' Murphy's attention after submitting a string of impressive demos. "Alaula" is a softly spun delight, with Grant Carruthers' impassioned vocals weaving themselves around alluring acoustic guitars, rich bass, twinkling Rhodes lines, and Robin Lee's immaculate cello parts. Murphy delivers the obligatory flipside remix, serving up a delay-laden dub built around intricate percussion, life-affirming pianos, and Lee's wonderful strings.

Review: The Old Euphonium marks a welcome return for Jim Baron (Crazy P, Ron Basejam etc) and Benjamin J Smith's occasional collaborative project, White Elephant. They begin with the smoky blue-eyed soul shuffle of "Don't Change Your Way", where brilliant piano parts and dubbed-out vocals stretch out over an organic groove, before inviting Manatee member Huw Costin to add his impassioned vocals to the AOR disco-goes-Balearic vibes of "Blood". On the B-side, you'll find the hushed, sun-kissed grooves of "Up For Air", and the glistening, sun-brought adult contemporary pop of "Tears". It's arguably the strongest moment on a pleasingly solid E.P.

  5. Highly (3:45)
Review: Japanese newcomer Powder debuted in impressive fashion with the Spray 12" issued through Sling & Samo's Born Free label earlier this year consisting of diverse yet equally trippy dancefloor tools. We were not the only ones impressed, as Andrew Hogge has got his Lovefingers on some fresh Powder produce for the latest ESP Institute 12", the five track Highly. Again it's Powder's diversity and her knack for blending the functional with the trippy that really impresses here with opener "Lost Of Light" setting the tone. Glassy textures slip over the taut, minimal groove, with vocal effects drenched in all manner of delay - a most humid and intoxicating production. Tempos vary as the EP progresses, from the slow burning throb of "Manhole" to the cooing house delights of "Humid Wind", yet Powder's qualities remain undimmed throughout. The two briefer cuts that close out the record are quite delightful productions that seem perfectly tailored to opening and ending a mix.

Review: Two of the UK's finest underground labels join forces and share their talent on this killer 12. From IIB we have Coyote's Sin Distracciounes, an upbeat sunkissed dancefloor meditation featuring the blissed out Flamenco guitar of long time collaborator Saro Tribastone. Futurboogie's Christophe remixes and chops up the guitar and adds some gypsymenesque organ stabs and layers of keys. Futureboogie's Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read drop the funky guitar heavy Restless People. Sublime chugging beats and a beautiful vocal refrain imploring 'Slow It Down' creating a laidback house monster. IIB's Max Essa puts his remix right in the middle of the dancefloor with straight up house vibes and extra percussion.

First up CFCF (Paper Bag Records/1080p) delivers a wonderful rendition of "Brunch With Suki", reminiscent of late 90s, drum n bass influenced electronica. On the flip, there's a wonderful gamelan workout on Nu Guinea Aquarium's truly breathtaking rework that's just made for drifting. 5. Body Wave
Review: Rudy (aka Robin Lee from Faze Action) makes a welcome return on FAR, taking in the atmosphere of sunnier climes.

The title tracks opening cascades and swirling synths fall into an easy Balearic groove, with singing melodies, exotic marimbas, a chugging synth bass and production echoing a mix of Compass Point, Grace Jones et all on holiday in Europe, whilst setting the scene for the EP. The 2nd track is introduced by hypnotic tones against analog synth arpeggios and haunting synth solos, invoking the "Sky Goddess". Back down to earth on the flip side is an invitation to sail down the "Shimmering Coast", with its relaxed guitar groove and keyboard flourishes all underpinned by a stunning 80s sounding bass line. Dropping anchor at "Fortune Lagoon", we are treated to some of Rudy's personally designed analog keyboard sounds, which mange to challenge yet retain tropical warmth.

Finally live chorus bass introduces us to "Body Wave" which manages to fuse easy French Disco with jazzy Fender Rhodes hooks. By Nature is a reflection of white washed houses, palm trees, refreshing coastal beaches and yacht parties. Don't forget your sunglasses and tanning oil!

Review: Nurtured by Mudd and owners of their own stunning live band, Paqua should really deliver more Balearic bliss than they have. As we wait tentatively for more heartfelt, organic sun-kissed soul, Claremont 56 have commissioned some incredible remixes... "Late Train" gets a full cosmic treatment from the Idjut Boys while Emperor Machine takes it down a dark alley and roughs it up with a series of analogue synth slaps. Ray Mang, meanwhile, focuses on the dreamiest aspects of "The Visitor" and rearranges and polishes them in a way that's reminiscent of a certain Andrew Ashong. Stunning.

Lewie Day (aka Tornado Wallace) and Tom Moore may be from Melbourne, but the duo make up the Coober Pedy University Band, coining the term "Krautback" to describe this Moon Plain EP. Whether it's far-out strains of exotica, electronic folk, or even some straight-up hill-billie funk, the nomadic artist is always one to look out for. He's up on Spain's excellent Lovemonk label, perennial leaders in leftfield disco and balearica, with the raunchy, funk-tastic guitar riffs of "Twilight", a tune that is so cool and laid-back it could be enjoyed by pretty much all walks of life. There's three version, though, all by Jose Manuel; the main remix drops in a house beat and something of a Latino sound, the dub goes deeper into the bass elements of the mix, and the Voyage Voyage mix takes the listener on a more daring journey, backed by a progressive edge. We love it.

  3. Portmanteau (Zoovox remix)
Review: Mountain Ash is an alias of producer Lusty Zanzibar. When the track Portmanteau was sent to Uber they immediately picked up this slice of hynotic experimental loveliness. Layer upon layer of emotive synths and a pulsing arp help you drift towards a beautiful climax. Coyote slow the pace a little keeping the hypnotic pulsing arpeggio and add some lazy beachside drums, percussion, a few pianos and Kalimbas creating a beautiful beach bar shuffler..Brooklyn's finest Zoovox create a subtle analogue rework staying close to original but adding their own delicate vibrations. Drift away into the sunset.

Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Review: Stuttgart club night Kitjen has decided to launch a label. For this debut release, they've turned to Tuff City Kids man Phillip Lauer and brother Jacob, who deliver their second 12" under the Hotel Lauer alias (their first, Brudis, dropped on Live At Robert Johnson last year). A-side "Agass" sets the tone, layering addictively bright piano riffs and expansive, tumbling synthesizer melodies over foreboding, one-note chords and jaunty drum machine rhythms. The classic feel continues on flipside "Stollice", where synthesized strings wrap themselves around a deliciously glassy-eyed Balearic house groove and stabbing, rave-era electronics. Both tracks are impressively dancefloor-friendly, eschewing the obvious in favour of lesser-played inspirations.

  1. Babadag (Khidja remix)
  2. Shop (Mehmet Aslan remix)
  3. Doamne Ce Greseala Am (Mehmet Aslan remix)
  4. 1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

Review: Marko Pelaic is Homeboy and has appeared previously on the likes of Wolf Music and Lovedancing. With a bit of help from buddy Adam Semijanac on vocals, he delivers some smooth and emotive deep house on the Heart Is Where The Homeboy Is EP. Starting out with the dusty and Herbie Hancock-ish live jam "Livada" there's the funky "Decisions Ricochet" a loveable soul excursion featuring Bebe Na Vole's amazing vocals. On the flip "Bonbon" goes for some mellower loungey flavour and is perfect for that afterhour session back at yours, while "Kornati Sunsets" features some rich analogue synth tapestries and bongo drumming sounding like something off of Grace Jones' legendary Nightclubbing LP.

  4. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
Review: Question: How do you follow your last release that featured high profile remix treatments from Messrs Harvey Bassett and Kenneth Dixon Jnr? Los Angeles trio Pollyn have decided to answer that quandary by showing their own strength in the art of reinterpreting other's music on this rather party friendly burgundy twelve inch which features tracks from Liquid Liquid, Gorillaz, The Eurhythmics and Paul Simon. Sal P's ledgendary NYC troupe have their instantly recognisable "Optimo" given the Pollyn treatment, the trio succeed in stamping their own woozy psychedelic intentions while remaining faithful to what's a punk funk classic. A similar approach is taken to the Gorillaz track "DARE" which has Mr Albarn's high pitched tones taken on by singer Genevieve Artadi while keeping Shaun Ryder's participation intact - nice rhythmic switch up on this too. On the flip, "Take Me To Your Heart" by The Eurhythmics gets a punk funk cover from Pollyn that could feasibly find a comfortable home on a DFA B Side while little Paulie's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" gets a subtle rolling re-edit.
