  2. Sad Beach
  3. Through The Desert Land
  4. Seaport Theme
  5. Water Plain
Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Review: NuNorthern Soul take a brief respite from their BJ Smith series so boss man 'Phat' Phil Cooper can indulge his love for Ryo Kawasaki. Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

Review: Light Of Other Days is a Zurich based label run by Marc Hofweber and Georg Munz and for this release they tap mysterious trio Ethimm for this rather beautiful EP. Starting out with a cover of Rhythm & Sound's "Why" featuring Veronique's gorgeous vocals, this is a lovely electro-modern classical crossover journey. They then team up with fellow Swiss purveyor of the deep Lexx on the smooth late night groove of "Late". On the flip, "Next" and "Done" go for some rather reflective and dubbed out downbeat vibes which will appeal to fans of Blackest Ever Black acts Dalhous or Raime. Curious stuff indeed!

  3. Back 2 U (Tranz dub) (7:45)
Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Review: Just over a year ago Phil Lauer teamed up with Fab Mammarella for the Italo-German disco delights of Black Spuma with Mark Barrott's International Feel label a perfect home for their debut transmission together. Thankfully it was no one-off as Intl Feel find some room in a busy 2016 schedule for some fresh Black Spuma produce from the pair with this Onda four-tracker. Fans of crystalline, glistening house music will be in raptures when they hear lead cut "Metallo Nero" which brings to mind Max D's LARJ classic "Polo (Extended Version)", albeit doused in Balearic dust. From here the duo gently amble through mid-tempo Wally Badarou does Beat Down Acid on "Hundred Fingers Man," before a notable upturn in tempo for the effervescent house bliss of the title track. To close, Black Spuma introduce some breakbeats into the mix for the delicious off-kilter "Gabula" which should appeal to fans of Hashman Deejay.

Review: Given the breathtaking beauty and sheer brilliance of Jan "Wolf Muller" Schulte and Cass's first collaborative mini-album, Sound of The Glades, you'd expect this remix package to disappoint in comparison. In fact, International Feel has done a superb job. It helps, of course, that each producer delivers a remix. Schulte's "Wind Version" of "Adios" is wonderfully evocative, with the original's chords and fretless bass flitting winding its' way around the producer's typically organic groove, while Cass goes all horizontal with a dreamy, atmospheric take on the same track. Best of all, though, is Tolouse Low Trax's A-side remix of "Glade Runner", which laces the original's accordions and hand percussion over a chunky, head-nodding 4/4 groove.

  1. By Nature

  3. Shimmering Coast
  4. Fortune Lagoon
  5. Body Wave
Review: Rudy (aka Robin Lee from Faze Action) makes a welcome return on FAR, taking in the atmosphere of sunnier climes.

The title tracks opening cascades and swirling synths fall into an easy Balearic groove, with singing melodies, exotic marimbas, a chugging synth bass and production echoing a mix of Compass Point, Grace Jones et all on holiday in Europe, whilst setting the scene for the EP. The 2nd track is introduced by hypnotic tones against analog synth arpeggios and haunting synth solos, invoking the "Sky Goddess". Back down to earth on the flip side is an invitation to sail down the "Shimmering Coast", with its relaxed guitar groove and keyboard flourishes all underpinned by a stunning 80s sounding bass line. Dropping anchor at "Fortune Lagoon", we are treated to some of Rudy's personally designed analog keyboard sounds, which mange to challenge yet retain tropical warmth.

Finally live chorus bass introduces us to "Body Wave" which manages to fuse easy French Disco with jazzy Fender Rhodes hooks. By Nature is a reflection of white washed houses, palm trees, refreshing coastal beaches and yacht parties. Don't forget your sunglasses and tanning oil!

Review: Mountain Ash is an alias of producer Lusty Zanzibar. When the track Portmanteau was sent to Uber they immediately picked up this slice of hynotic experimental loveliness. Layer upon layer of emotive synths and a pulsing arp help you drift towards a beautiful climax. Coyote slow the pace a little keeping the hypnotic pulsing arpeggio and add some lazy beachside drums, percussion, a few pianos and Kalimbas creating a beautiful beach bar shuffler..Brooklyn's finest Zoovox create a subtle analogue rework staying close to original but adding their own delicate vibrations. Drift away into the sunset.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

  1. Heaven Taste (Steven Wilson original mix edit) (11:21)
  2. Heaven Taste (Jimi Tenor remix) (9:09)
Review: The iconic Finnish label Sahko Recordings comes correct once more with this 12" edition of the classic "Heaven Taste" by British art-rock troupe No-Man. Tim Bownes and Steven Wilson recorded "Heaven Taste" with the assistance of Mick Karn, Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen and Ben Coleman in studio sessions back in the summer of '92, with the track first surfacing as a rather epic, enveloping 21 minute version on the Painting Paradise EP for One Little Indian in 1993. Given the length and class, it is no surprise "Heaven Taste" was adopted by the emergent ambient techno scene rising in London in the early '90s with Mixmaster Morris a particular champion. This Sahko edition sees No-Man's Steven Wilson turn in an 11-minute edit that doesn't lose any of the original's finely crafted grandeur, whilst on the B-side Jimi Tenor pops up with a rearrangement that highlights his skill at playing the flute and keyboard!

  3. Doamne Ce Greseala Am (Mehmet Aslan remix)
  4. 1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Review: The latest Antinote release marks a slight diversion for the Parisian operation as it welcomes Domenique Dumont to the fold with a six-track EP of charmingly odd vignettes that sound unlike anything else that has come out on the label, while simultaneously fitting right in. Despite the French name, it transpires Domenique Dumont is the work of a man hailing from Latvian capital Riga with Comme ca benefitting from the occasional wonderful vocal turn from an unnamed female singer. With delicate, fluttering melodic lines and gentle Minipops beats run through a dub aesthetic filter and imbued with positivity, it's certainly comforting listening for more clement times. All hail Antinote!

Review: It's been a fine year for Mark Barrott's International Feel with the Jose Padilla album an undoubted centrepiece. The Ibiza label aren't quite done for the year however, with Lingua Franca from Len Leise marking the onset of a series of mini-album projects from International Feel aimed around a loose concept for artists to "show more of who they are musically without the constraints of the traditional album format." Few had heard of Leise until he was featured on International Feel last year, but the Australian has gone on to score a rather fine record for the like-minded Aficionado operation as well as contribute to that killer Paradise Goulash mix from Prins Thomas. Some seven tracks deep, Lingua Franca finds Leise crafting "an imaginary journey based on real experiences," with Morocco, Spain, Russia, India and Brazil providing the inspiration for the clearly well-travelled musician. Sumptuous Balearica is of course the order of the day, with the occasional dalliance into something a bit more dancefloor appropriate ("O Caminho"), and ensures Lingua Franca is a fine start for a series that promises contributions from Gatto Fritto, CFCF and Wolf Muller.

Lewie Day (aka Tornado Wallace) and Tom Moore may be from Melbourne, but the duo make up the Coober Pedy University Band, coining the term "Krautback" to describe this Moon Plain EP. Madrugada's tribal energy is reminiscent of Tony Esposito or Tullio de Picopo. The Italian afrobalearic groove that we at Uber love so much. The Big Boobs is a slower more contemplative track, still holding onto the percussive feel but with hints of the east. I suspect the title is influenced by last summers trip to the Great Outdoors in Birmingham. Finally we come to the epic musical journey that is African Obsession. Continuing the fine Italian tradition of tribal dance music this is a tight superbly produced trip into afrocosmiche. 15 minutes of hypnotic beauty. Uber hitting the spot again.

Cinematic, detailed and densely textured; each track is a total trip. "Trans-Universal Express" comes on strong like a Beyond The Wizards Sleeve edit, all percussive and rough round the edges. "The Ocean Is Teacher" is a sandy-toed affair with a sedate heartbeat kickdrum and delicate laps of chords that ebb and flow beneath heavily breathed vocal cries. "Let Your Body Go" flies us east on a Kashmir carpet powered by wind chimes while "Cloud Mountain" is a Mudd-style cosmic yarn where an acoustic guitar and subtle percussion provide the framework for unpredictable synth salvos that whip up and vanish just as the title suggests. Beautiful.

Review: Excellent debut EP from Paradisica with warm night Balearic dance vibes across all 4 tracks. A side, beautiful romantic dance grooves for the sunset hour. The flip 'Amore' brings a sexy and upbeat late 80s house vibe with a driving Pete Herbert mix to keep the party going strong.

Review: There are few better than Moon B at tiptoeing the fine line between woozy '80s synth-tronica and vintage deep house. Here, he's at it again, delivering another fine EP. Opener "Measure Pleasure" is a quietly Balearic delight, with dreamy chords, lazy melodies and shuffling machine drums combining to create a sleepy, eyes closed mood. That track is given a slightly more percussive boot up the backside by Golden Ivy, before Moon B unfurls the bubbling deepness and Lamont Booker melodies of "Nada Cloud". Even better is "PV Hills", whose chiming melodies and yearning synthesizers are offset by fizzing percussion hits and a booming bassline. Scottish producer Fudge Fingas provides a wonderful remix of that track, turning it into a rolling, analogue deep house wonder.

  1. Sabu Dance
  2. Every Breath I Take
Review: Black Rox is back with two more sneaky Soft Rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked CD wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. The A-side Sabu Dance combines Horns, Flutes & Percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from Africa via Berlin. This has been thoroughly road tested by Soft Rocks at their Kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. On the B-side is not the tantric one's ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of UK. reggae at its finest. Adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. A perfect track for blissful summer evenings.

Review: Italian sound sculpter Spygeist maintains momentum with a bounty of touching compositions: "New Forms Of Beauty". The space and dynamics immerse you from the very first chime of "Hanged". Further into the fog we plough to discover the cinematic, slo-mo jazz of "Demoniac", the nostalgic piano whimsy of "Confidential Love", the yearning one note synth strikes of "Malinchonica", the more sprightly, springy classic electro beats and Amazonian atmospheres of "Light Pipe" and plenty more. Coming on strong like an album rather than a seven-track EP, this in itself is a form of beauty.

  4. Night Falls (3:29)
Review:  Stephen James Wilkinson aka Bibio has been a big part of Warp's revival since the mid 2000's, and it's no surprise given the fact that this guy is as multi-talented as he is productive behind the mixing desk. "Why So Serious" is a chilled out, hazy boogie monster with gorgeous synth accompaniment and Olivier St Louis on the vocals, while "Make Up" goes more soulful thanks to its slow beat and St Louis' sublime singing. "Stress Me Out" heads back to the LA Boulevard for a ride around with the convertible, and "Night Falls" provides the gentle sort of cool down that's perfect for a night drive. Another cracker from Wilkinson, and also from London's Warp stable.
