Review: Leeds' seven-piece outfit, Submotion Orchestra return with their third album after Finest Hour and Fragments! If you're looking for modern fusion with an electronic sensibility then look no further because these guys are the *%@*! A whopping twelve tracks long, the LP contains a lilttle bit of everything from gnarly break-ridden grooves like "Awakening", to choppy half-step tunes such as "City Lights", and all tied up in a warm r&b coating. Every track on here could be a hit, so which one's for you?

Review: New alias for Richard Gateaux (Aka Phoreski) dropping two essential jams for the Soft Rocks boys on their Kinfolk imprint. 'This Devil Can Dance' is a scary anthemic electronic dance monster from the left that will slay many a dance floor this year and has legend written all over it. Add to the mix the downtempo delight 'Lone Soldier Theme' that takes a different electronic route with it's echoes of 'Assault On Precinct 13' / 'Escape From New York' filmic vibe this makes for an essential package.

Review: Ghostly International has picked up a lot as of late, and it's high time that this excellent label started to bring us new and exciting talent again. Here we have Com Truise - Tom Cruise's alias when he hangs around the scientology meets (just kidding!) - and five masterful slices of synth-heavy dance music. "Sunspot" is a delicate scorcher boasting a beautiful pattern of melodies, "Forgive" goes for the new age look and feel, "Diffraction" sits somewhere between disco and balearic, the title track "Silicon Tare" is the kind of beat-heavy tune you'd be listening to on a beach in LA, and "Du Zirconia" stutters its beats over a grainy bassline that recalls 1980's boogie. Sick.

  2. Thought Our Love Was Strong (Romanowski vs Bing Ji Ling remix)
  3. See Me Through (Coyote Dub mix)
Review: Uber Recordings' latest release see the legendary Bing Ji Ling make an appearance. See Me Through featuring the sweet vocals of Diane Birch is a sunkissed slice of California soul. A beautiful heartfelt love song oozing quality. Live instrumentation and a tight arrangement creating a real classic song. The second track, the Romanowski remix of Thought Our Love Was Strong is something a little different. Tropical digital reggae vibrations all over Bing's sweet soulful smokey vocals.and bluesy guitar. West Coast Collie weed poolside stylee.
The B side is Coyote's reworking of See Me Through. Throbbing disco sub bass loops and dubbed out vocal samples with extra percussion and funky guitars layering over house beats build up to a vocal break down, before dropping back in with all guns blazing. Big smiles and dancing guaranteed.

Review: Uber bring the new Mushrooms Project EP. A slight diversion for Uber into the cosmic afro infused musical stylings that the Mushrooms boys are masters. Madrugada's tribal energy is reminiscent of Tony Esposito or Tullio de Picopo. The Italian afrobalearic groove that we at Uber love so much. The Big Boobs is a slower more contemplative track, still holding onto the percussive feel but with hints of the east. I suspect the title is influenced by last summers trip to the Great Outdoors in Birmingham. Finally we come to the epic musical journey that is African Obsession. Continuing the fine Italian tradition of tribal dance music this is a tight superbly produced trip into afrocosmiche. 15 minutes of hypnotic beauty. Uber hitting the spot again.

A tribute to a favorite Brazilian musician and an update for contemporary rotation. "Luanda" is hypnotic, psychedelic tropicalia. Truly digging deep, SELVAGEM give Universal Cave a taste of the Forward Deep & Free sounds of Balnearico from Brazil. Balnearico is the fusion of balearic and "balneario," the Portuguese word that is synonymous with beach.

  3. Let Feel Higher
Review: Having previously plied their wares on Is It Balearic and Los Grandes, Spanish nu-Balearic sorts Two Mamarrachos pop up on another suitably horizontal imprint, dependable Leeds label Joe's Bakery. There style is sun-kissed by druggy, with opener "Al Andalus" offering an exotic, chugging blend of foreboding, low-slung grooves and Arabic synthesizer melodies. "Super Disco Dancer" delves deep into the box marked "experimental analogue electronic disco", with heady, spaced-out synthesizers sprawling all over a typically atmospheric, cosmic groove. "Let Feel Higher" is, arguably, the most Balearic of the three, with warm acoustic guitars and delay-laden gospel vocal samples creating a suitably toasty, glassy-eyed mood.

A sixth release arrives, suggesting KBE is nowhere near to exhausting his archive of material and this 12" features another quartet of cuts that will find favour with the more horizontally inclined selectors out there. Head straight to "Run For Fun" if you want some classic Compass Point vibes, whilst B side jazz funk burner "Chak Hahn" is a real diamond of a track. Review: Cafe Romantica sees rising Melbourne producer Andras Fox team up with Oscar S. Thorn again for a richly deserved follow up to last year's Embassy Cafe LP for Dopeness Galore. Fox's star is definitely on the rise at the moment, with a recent 12" for Mexican Summer and Overworld, a highly regarded solo LP of smudged new age as A.R.T. Wilson. It was Embassy Cafe that arguably put Fox on the map, his raw and deep productions the perfect backing for Thorn's distinct vocal delivery and fans of that set will be pleased to hear the pair's chemistry is just as evident on Cafe Romantica. Some eight tracks deep, there's a real pleasant vibe throughout evoking that classic Dream 2 Science feel and will find equal favour amongst the home listeners and the club selectors.

Review: There are few better than Moon B at tiptoeing the fine line between woozy '80s synth-tronica and vintage deep house. Here, he's at it again, delivering another fine EP. Opener "Measure Pleasure" is a quietly Balearic delight, with dreamy chords, lazy melodies and shuffling machine drums combining to create a sleepy, eyes closed mood. That track is given a slightly more percussive boot up the backside by Golden Ivy, before Moon B unfurls the bubbling deepness and Lamont Booker melodies of "Nada Cloud". Even better is "PV Hills", whose chiming melodies and yearning synthesizers are offset by fizzing percussion hits and a booming bassline. Scottish producer Fudge Fingas provides a wonderful remix of that track, turning it into a rolling, analogue deep house wonder.

The A-side Sabu Dance combines Horns, Flutes & Percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from Africa via Berlin. This has been thoroughly road tested by Soft Rocks at their Kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. On the B-side is not the tantric one's ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of UK. reggae at its finest. Adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. A perfect track for blissful summer evenings.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

Review: In our eyes, it is no exaggeration to claim that Finis Africae's recent reissues on Japan's EM have been partly response for the recent resurrection of Balearic, exotica, and deeply textured ambient music. The last three reissues on EM have all seen great success in terms of copies sold and feedback from game-changers such as the Mood Hut mandem, and the label's close relationship with Honest Jon's gives this music an even higher send of cultural relevance to the scene of today. Amazonia was first released in 1990 on Musica Sin Fin, and it very much sounds like it was made yesterday; this is timeless music that has the ability to please just about any ear, or any sort of digger. Containing gentle beats and harmonic patterns, Juan Alberto Arteche managed to create a world of his own, where time and space is lost, and the melodies and rhythms take us back to a primeval state. Yes, we like this a hell of a lot. Contender for leftfield reissue of the year? Perhaps, and it's only February!

Review: This debut album from The Very Polish Cut-Outs stalwarts PTaki has been a long time coming, having originally been mooted for release back in 2013. It's clearly undergone many changes since then, but the Warsaw-based act's formula - samples of obscure Polish music, plus analogue beats and old-fashioned studio trickery - remains in tact. Przelot is an impressive set, all told, with sinewy, organic-sounding Balearic gems (see the classical guitars of blissful closer "Jelitkowo" and sun-kissed "Girlcandy") being joined by more adventurous, drum machine-based cuts that variously doff a cap to out-there dub (the brilliant "Nie Zabijaj"), slow acid (the equally inspired "Ostani Kurs"), and impossibly intoxicating downtempo jazz ("Juz Kocham Cie Tyle").

The two multi instrumentalists take us on an exotic and cosmic journey (Ash-ra and Popul Vuh said to have been influences) influenced by traditional and psychedelic folk strains, as well. We particularly enjoyed the hazy and esoteric vibes of "The Rituals Of Reversal", the retro-pop of "Patterns Somewhere" reminiscent musically of Simon & Garfunkel and featuring Felton's velvety vocals and of course the bittersweet cosmic trip towards the end "Weicher". A thoroughly enjoyable album!

Review: During the late '70s and early 1980s, Jamaican-in-London Tapper Zukie was responsible for a number of killer dub disco cuts, most of which have been irritatingly hard to find ever since. It's fair to say that "Visions Of Love", now re-released on his own Stars imprint (or repressed sneakily to make it look official) is one of those must-have cuts. Blessed with the heavy pulse of dub, the synth-laden shimmer of electrofunk and the open-minded dancefloor attitude of post-punk disco, it should be an essential purchase. As with the original release, it comes backed with the thrillingly Balearic "Love Dream", an instrumental dub that makes more of the original's wonderful synths and tactile bassline.

Review: The Running Back affiliated Mondo label is back with more impressive Balearic and chillout grooves. This follows up the tremendous compilation album; Collezione, which was released earlier this year. Label boss Francesco de Bellis aka L.U.C.A. appears with several long time collaborators such as Raiders Of The Lost Arp with the smooth astral travelling vibes of "Niagara (Rotla Version)". He then teams up with Polysick on the "Afghanistan Version" which is the smooth cruising psych-rock derivative that Psychemagik would sit up and notice. Finally it's L.U.C.A. Himself with the "Quirky Version" an intense retro house throwback in the vein of Lauer or Tuff City Kids and not being shy on the funk bass or heavy claps.

This time it's Stockholm's Fabror Resande Mac, who appeared previously on the label in 2014 with the Magma EP. On the A side "Achilles" gallops away slowly and eloquently in minimal fashion, the perfect intro for the wonderfully summery and Balearic (yep!) "Tiddens Tand" that you could imagine hearing on a beach in Tisno, Croatia circa '86.. or 2016 for that matter. On the flip "Effeckt" is bitter and melancholic, like something from a forgotten old film soundtrack, while final track "Vattern" is a creepy and sinister minimal synth jam that closes out this imaginary short film, just perfectly.

Review: Emerging with a series of cover versions and a Flume collaboration, Chet's rise has been supersonic. This is where his journey really took a turbo-boost. In case you missed it first time (or you've already worn your copy out) the freshly reissued Built In Glass is an expansive document into Chet's timeless world. Emphatic, emotional and rich in modern production, there's no faking soul like this... From the meandering keys and smoky, blurry whispers and Lidellian cries on "Melt" to the come-to-bed authority of "Talk Is Cheap" via the delicate insistence of "/", just as D'Angelo did in the 90s and Amp Fiddler did in the 00s, Faker is showcasing how soul is done with authority, rough-edged class and progressive focus in the modern age.

Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

  4. Paw Paw (8:06)
Review: Having previously delivered killer 12" singles from established talents Aquarian Foundation and Anom Vitruv, Canada's Total Stasis has turned to the previously unseen CS & Kreme. The project is in fact a new collaborative endeavour from Melbourne musicians Conrad Standish and Sam Karmel, known for their respective work in Standish/Carlyon and F ingers. Together, their atmospheric, world-weary, ambient house influenced sounds are fully in keeping with the imprint's output. They begin with the ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy downtempo vibes of "Devotion", before getting busy with a drum machine and electric piano on the enveloping "Basic Instinct (Club Scene)". This formula is explored further on the deliciously evocative and atmospheric "Fresh Exit", before they head to the heavens on the deep space ambience of "Paw Paw".

Review: Bring up The Laughing Light Of Plenty in conversation with the right crowd and you'll make grown men weep at the fact they were unable to grasp of a copy of the 'lost' album from Eddie Ruscha and Thomas Bullock. Recorded together sometime in 2007, the album was pressed by cult NY label Whatever We Want but never properly released with a smattering making it onto the shelves of record shops and now listed at high price on Discogs. Kudos to Stuart Leath's Emotional Response and Bullock's STD for teaming up to release the album as it was intended, under the initial name The Naturals. Expect twisted, psychedelic pop music to sooth the soul.
