Review: Here's a question for you: What happens when you take a track by a British power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre Balearica to remix it? You get the latest 12" missive from Claremont 56, which sees Bella Figura's "Better Man" reworked twice in impressive fashion by Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley. If you are familiar with Bratley's output for s It Balearic, Bird Scarer and Tsuba, you know the man breathes cosmic goodness and his work on Bella Figura's track offers a subtle new version that loses none of Justin Gartry's bluesy poignancy whilst adding a sparsely treated beat and plenty of low lying studio trickery.

Review: There's a crazy story behind this new release from the killer Antinote crew out of Paris. Paki-Visnadi is two Venetian musicians, Paki Zennaro and Gianni Visnadi, a guitarist and electronic composer respectively who got together one night in 1984 to compose a set of music intended for local dance schools. The results were recorded to tape but never fully released with just ten copies handed out to friends. If it wasn't for a chance flea market discovery by the partner of Antinote artist and famed tape hoarder Iueke, it's likely the world would never have heard Imaginary Choreography. And what a shame that would have been as the five tracks are delightful, minimal compositions filled with interesting rhythmic kinks.

Review: Parisian enfant terribles Antinote are back and this time present us with Nico Motte, the label's in-house graphic designer and one half of graphic design entity Check Morris. Following up 2014's Rhelogia EP, Motte serves up a brilliantly eclectic album exploring the Balearic, cosmic and downbeat across this fascinating journey. Starting out with the "Tema D'Amore" which sounds like something early 80's film soundtrack that was rescued for the cutting room floor, there's also the vintage Chicago house vibes of "ICA", the sombre and breathtaking ambience of "Tiger For Breakfast" and the sultry minimal disco of "Tacotac" among others. Music for modern lovers, young poets and the artists.

  3. Give It A Try (feat Rolly) (5:59)
  4. Aquavivas (7:42)
Review: Following a surprise outing on Paul 'Mudd' Murphy's Leng label, Bonnie and Klein return to the comforting surrounds of Kenneth Bager's Music For Dreams imprint. While their work has always been dreamy and horizontally inclined, Too Many Colors features arguably their most downtempo material to date. Certainly, the woozy, floating chords and languid rhythms of "Magnolia" evoke memories of the golden age of chill-out, while "Flaming Lights" is more Balearic than sharing a jazz cigarette with Alfredo and Jose Padilla. The string-laden vocal number "Give It A Try" has a touch of the "Unfinished Sympathy" about it, while "Aquavivas" smartly fuses chiming melodies, exotic influences, dub rhythms and bustling Afro-Cuban percussion.

Review: Quiz any Balearic enthusiast, and they'll likely speak of Kenneth Bager in hushed tones. The Danish DJ/producer is famed for the quality of his selections, a facet that makes his occasional compilations essential listening. There's naturally plenty to admire on Balearic Biscuits Volume 2, from the sped-up African insanity of Bufiman's "Bassdrum Party", and Mehmet Aslan's fine rework of Kaprov Not Kaprov's "Mechanical Turk" (think Arabic synth melodies and rolling grooves), to the loved-up, hands-in the air brilliance of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Deo", and Grooveman Spot's low-slung "Fork Power".

Review: Not being satisfied with his debut for Music For Dreams - coming through on the label with the wonderful Island LP - man like Ruf Duggles is back on the Danish imprint with some brutally sublime remixes of the tunes featured on it. The always excellent Peaking Lights reshapes "Speedboat" into a dubby, chilled-out kinda jam, while AL Breadwinner proceeds to deconstruct "Rasta Beach" and turns it into a minimal dub groover fort the after hours. On the flip, 2814 mystifies "Tendacayou" into a wave, air-filled lick in a new age kind of vibe, whereas Kenneth Bager goes all balearic on us for "Dominica". Lovely.

In the words of Let Them Eat Vinyl "On one summer night in 1998, Massive Attack set the standard that all future performers would try to live up to for years to come." Following up the success of the album Mezzanine released in 1997, Robert del Naja (3D) and Mushroom G and the extended cast of Tricky and Horace Andy play all the hits, including ones on the seminal Blue Lines ("Daydreaming"/"Safe From Harm") and its successor Protection ("Karmacoma"). Horace Andy is at his finest on the amazing "Man Next Door" while The Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser turned in a career highlight with her unmistakable voice on "Angel".

Review: The summer may seem out of reach right now, but the moment the needle drops on "Solina" you're instantly in the balmy thick of July. Sand in all the right places, a cool drink in your hand and the wave lapping gently in the background, think Mudd, think Pacqua, think Terje; look up Balearic and all new dictionaries printed from this moment will say "Solina". On the flip the Glaswegian trio get a slightly beatier twist from Les Crocodiles while retaining all the gentle ebbs and flows of the original. Properly beautiful.

Review: With drum and bass going through somewhat of a metamorphosis, Mancunian producer - and one half of Akkord - Synkro is an artist challenging the flexibility of the genre without falling too far down the rabbit hole of experimentalism. This mellow four-track Transient EP is Joe McBride's fourth for Apollo and first of 2014 which sees him provide two tracks of heartfelt, LTJ Bukem-styled drum and bass, while "Contact" sounds like something you might here from Giegling's Dwig mixed with R&B oohs and an ahhs. Synkro then completes the EP with a soft beaten, dubsteppy ambient number appropriately titled "Falling".

Review: Those of a certain vintage may have a soft spot for Global Underground's After Hours series, which promised to soundtrack "the party after the club" by joining the dots between woozy progressive house, deep techno, electronica and, of course, ambient. Some eight years after the last installment, the long-running club brand has decided to re-launch the series. Apparently, this latest installment took a year to put together, and featured tweaked, edited and gently reworked tunes layered up for a more enjoyable listening experience. Musically, it sticks to similar territory to previous installments, updating the sound a little via tracks and remixes from Ewan Pearson, Lawrence, Scuba, Matrixxman, Michael Mayer and Joris Voorn.

If you're looking for modern fusion with an electronic sensibility then look no further because these guys are the *%@*! From the soft-focused sentiment of "Ancora Tu" (which you may recognise by way of a recent Roisin Murphy cover) and the dreamy synths and far-away operatics of "Due Mondi" to the luscious sandy-toed ballad "Amarsi Un Po", it's a fitting celebration of one of Italy's most famous, and highly reclusive musicians.

'This Devil Can Dance' is a scary anthemic electronic dance monster from the left that will slay many a dance floor this year and has legend written all over it. Add to the mix the downtempo delight 'Lone Soldier Theme' that takes a different electronic route with it's echoes of 'Assault On Precinct 13' / 'Escape From New York' filmic vibe this makes for an essential package.

Up top "Crash Boom" sees JAZ serve up a slab of killer vocoder led disco funk that's so hooky the crowd will be signing over the sensational slap bass without evening realising. After that level of disco deviance you'll need to cool your jets... And Party Dad has the perfect remedy; a gentle guitar strumming number that's reminiscent of Donovan at his deepest, it's an instant Balearic lullaby. Sweet dreams!

Review: Here's something of a treat for those of a Balearic persuasion: a musical meeting of minds between the ever magnificent Seahawks and the similarly talented Eddie C, on the latter's Red Motorbike imprint. "Say Hello To Love" sounds like it was created to accompany long, endless sunsets, with woozy guitar lines, gravelly vocals and swirling chords wrapping themselves around a lolloping groove. Things get trippy on the flip, where all parties neck a whole load of hallucinogens and lay down the kind of psychedelic fusion of electronics, effects-laden guitars and hissing percussion of which dear old Syd Barrett would no doubt approve.

Review: Having finished releasing 12" samplers for their superb sophomore set See You When You Get There, Session Victim return to the Retreat label they co-run with a trio of brand new tracks. There's a brilliantly dense and humid feel to the undulating bass, cowbell-heavy beats and jaunty melodies of opener "Summer Games", which is as sticky, sweaty and life-affirming as the title suggests. Turn over for "Black Cream", a typically jazzy and percussion-heavy slice of blissful deep house that makes great use of an extended, chord-heavy breakdown. Finally, the German duo explores the downtempo side of their trademark sound with "Finderlohn", whose lazy flamenco guitars, chopped-up beats and thickset chords suggests an attempt to capture a Balearic mood.

  4. Extsign
Review: A certain Danish downtempo sort once again dons his KBE guise for a third selection of decidedly White Isle-friendly re-edits on his Balearic Blah Blah imprint. As usual, there's much to admire, from the beachside haziness of "Day Off" (seemingly a re-edit of a reggae-flecked Chris Rea track), to the rubbery electric bass and winding synths of "Exitsign" (a pleasing extension of a largely ignored, "Fascination"-era Human League track). Elsewhere, there's a welcome re-dub of Larry Levan fave "Pull Up To The Bumper" by Grace Jones, and "Dub To Me", a picturesque, guitar-flecked chugger that's almost the epitome of '80s Balearica.

  1. See Mr Through (feat Diane Birch)
  2. Thought Our Love Was Strong (Romanowski vs Bing Ji Ling remix)
  3. See Me Through (Coyote Dub mix)
Review: Uber Recordings' latest release see the legendary Bing Ji Ling make an appearance. See Me Through featuring the sweet vocals of Diane Birch is a sunkissed slice of California soul. A beautiful heartfelt love song oozing quality. Live instrumentation and a tight arrangement creating a real classic song. The second track, the Romanowski remix of Thought Our Love Was Strong is something a little different. Tropical digital reggae vibrations all over Bing's sweet soulful smokey vocals.and bluesy guitar. West Coast Collie weed poolside stylee.
The B side is Coyote's reworking of See Me Through. Throbbing disco sub bass loops and dubbed out vocal samples with extra percussion and funky guitars layering over house beats build up to a vocal break down, before dropping back in with all guns blazing. Big smiles and dancing guaranteed.

Review: Cafe Romantica sees rising Melbourne producer Andras Fox team up with Oscar S. Thorn again for a richly deserved follow up to last year's Embassy Cafe LP for Dopeness Galore. Fox's star is definitely on the rise at the moment, with a recent 12" for Mexican Summer and Overworld, a highly regarded solo LP of smudged new age as A.R.T. Wilson. It was Embassy Cafe that arguably put Fox on the map, his raw and deep productions the perfect backing for Thorn's distinct vocal delivery and fans of that set will be pleased to hear the pair's chemistry is just as evident on Cafe Romantica. Some eight tracks deep, there's a real pleasant vibe throughout evoking that classic Dream 2 Science feel and will find equal favour amongst the home listeners and the club selectors.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

Review: Polish RBMA graduate Naphta builds on the strong foundations he's been digging since 2013 via releases on Studio Barnhus, OMENA, Father & Son and now Transatlantyk with his debut album. A dense foggy, fuggy weave of influences and ideas, 7th Expedition is a dizzying melting pot of sounds from the heaving Hammond blasts of "Arrival/Contraptions/Ancient Perils" to the classic b-boy breaks of "Guardians Of The Forbidden" via the trip hop swampiness of "And The Consequences". Cosmic, unhurried and playfully immersive; a clumsy comparison might be Lindstrom being remixed by Dilla but that's about as clear as you can be when beats are as unique as this.

Review: Umberto is Kansas City via Los Angeles' Matt Hill who alongside his revolving cast of supporting musicians has been a staple of local imprint Not Not Fun for some years and this is his third album for the label since 2013's Confrontations LP. There's a variety of moods and grooves on here but as always, Hill's music always creates some sort of imaginary 80s horror soundtrack and this one is no different. But we particularly enjoyed the dark outsider techno of "Drifters", the spooky and slow burning industrial textures of Black Sea" or the pumping synth-pop groove of "Dawn Of Mirrors".

Review: Jaakko Eino Kalei is a Finnish tram driver who also happens to make dreamy, abstract and utterly fantastic electro-pop. While he's been active since 2008 on the under-the-radar Helmi Levyt imprint as well as Beats In Space, he's now landed on Domino sub-label Weird World, also the home to the majority of Peaking Lights output. His self-titled debut for the label is a genreless bundle of psychedelic electronica, twelve slices of neo-funk with an experimental edge. The tracks all contain a lo-fi feel, a sound which adds to the whole Kalevi DIY vibe - something we're totally into - but they're also excellent stand-alone pieces for the charts. "Say", for instance, is a shimmering Hot Chip kinda cut, while "Mind Like Muscle" is funky and laid-back. You just gotta dive in there and check it out for yourselves. Hot!

Review: Hot on the heels of his Whiskey Disco EP, Mathieu Cle continues to the soundtrack the summer of his life with two more blissful, shimmering slices of Balearica. "Horizon" unravels by way of lush breezy pads and slippery guitars and easy-flowing keys that gradually take more and more of the spotlight, like a welcomed ship sailing closer and closer. "Night Motel" is takes us deeper into the evening with light skippy breaks and subtle samplecraft. Remix-wise The Project Club deconstruct "Horizon" and rebuild it with the same crisp psych rock tones as Pacqua might do while Maricopa goes right back to the late 80s with full emphasis on the synthetic strings and flutes. Paradise is open for business once again...

Review: ** Repress ** Donato Dozzy is spoken about in hushed tones by anyone worth their techno salt. On the K LP he shows us why: across seven unnamed tracks the Italian producer takes us on a journey that at times is calming and ambient; at others hazy and atmospheric. Few producers before him can have been so adept at producing richly textured, melodic techno, with the almost deathly slow opening track leading into a truly unique and rewarding listening experience. Importantly, Dozzy never strays too far into esoteric territory a€" this is still palpably techno music. Originally released as a limited edition cassette on Further Records, this double LP is lovingly packaged in screen printed casing. Seriously collectable.
