Los Imaginones (140 gram vinyl 12")

  2. Shockers (The Samps remix) (5:28)
  3. Underdogs (Tom Noble remix) (6:44)
  4. Roll (Aritocrat P Child re-edit) (6:56)
Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.

Review: When it comes to production, the Idjut Boys are at their best when they let their dub influences run free. It's why their early, spaced-out deep house releases remain and high demand, and why Versions - a thoroughly dubbed-out re-imagining of their so-so 2012 set, Cellar Door - is arguably their most enjoyable album to date. Presumably put together while exceedingly high, the album's seven re-titled alternate takes flit between glistening Balearic dub (the 11-minute, gently evolving journey that is "Another Bird"), thrillingly percussive, Afro-and-rock tinged dub disco ("Lovehunter Dub", "Le Wasuk"), undulating dancefloor epics (the echo-laden piano and chugging rhythms of "Kenny Dub Headband") and the kind of drowsy ambient fare that recalls the finest Fila Brazilia productions ("Ambient Rab").

Review: Dating from tape recordings made between 1996 - 2012, Cosmic Vibrations follows the Tropical Psychedelics (ERS003) album for the label, this time digging deeper in to the mind of Secret Circuit than the more dance flor inspired sounds heard on last years album Tactile Galactics album for Beats In Space. Again we glimpse a melting pot of pyschedelia, techno, balearic and ambient to create an electronic gem, but all done with a wry smile and jesters wink rather than today's penchant of moody seriousness. Life on the US West Coast shines from the album, from opener Out West to She Got Love, sunshine music that couldn't be made anywhere else. It's not all hippy-happy vibes though with Minimal Vibrations and the dub of Straightline taking things in to deeper and instropective territory. However, all things resonate in Eddie's analogue meets kitchen sink synthesis. Layer after layer flats across the album to create a smile-inducing whole. Journeying from the folk guitar of Somnambulation to the minimilism of Glass Skeletons, before bidding a fond farewell in the apt, Bells. This second and fial collection of early cassette works is not an end, but a blessing.

Review: To say this second album from Linkwood has been a long time coming is to present yourself as a candidate for Understatement of the Year. A follow up to Nick Moore's fine 2009 debut System has been regularly alluded to by Firecracker boss Lindsay Todd within the context of the label's other releases. It wasn't until an unreleased Linkwood track appeared in Prosumer's fine fabric mix last year that the notion of a new Linkwood album began to take on a semblance of reality. We still can't quite believe it's happened, despite the rather dashing copies of Expression sitting pretty in the Juno warehouse. There's a 12 cuts from Linkwood to work through on Expressions and it's a real sumptuous listen, taking in new age ambient vignettes, bass heavy beat down, deep house workouts and plenty more.

Review: Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: Cool story: 60s psychedelic folk strummer Cutter was spotted busking in an LA subway by Claremont 56's 40 Thieves. Instantly submitting to his acoustic charms, they strike up a creative relationship. Recruiting the writing skills of Jum Jum Records founder David Harks, they create the cosmic beauty that is "Strutting Serpent". Sitting somewhere between Cat Stevens and Paqua, it's the epitome of Balearic timelessness. For added psychedelic majesty flip for a future version of Cutter's classic "Gift Of Our Fathers". Stunning.

Review: **RUFFY REPRESS** RBMA alumni Ruf Dug ups the ante with his debut album. According to legend it was written during 12 weeks of island paradise in Guadeloupe. But as his previous work (all written in Manchester) is as beautifully Balearic as this, who can tell? Stretching his signature and a great sense of space throughout, he flexes from pretty raw, head-bendy dancefloor (the 2020 Soundsystem style build on "Speedboat" and the sprightly tech lollops of "Mosquito") to the film-like and vaguely discordant ("Mangrove Dub") via the totally immersive and alluring (the stunning, spine-melting overlapping arpeggios of "Shoreline"). Regardless of where he wrote it, it's a highly accomplished album... And perfectly timed for the sunny season.

Review: Quite surprisingly, The Triad is the first Pantha Du Prince solo full-length since 2010's well received Black Noise. Like that set, which saw Hendrick Weber continue his obsession with the melodious end of minimal techno, The Triad is a vibrant and picturesque affair, drawing influence from the late night atmospherics of James Blake, and the bubbly IDM of Boards of Canada, as much as the dancefloors of Berlin, Cologne or Frankfurt. As usual, Weber has managed to combine electronics with acoustic instrumentation without spoiling the shuffling dancefloor mood, and the album's various vocal tracks are notable for their immense dreaminess. If you've never taken a trip into Weber's warming world before, The Triad offers the perfect introduction.

In the words of Let Them Eat Vinyl "On one summer night in 1998, Massive Attack set the standard that all future performers would try to live up to for years to come." Following up the success of the album Mezzanine released in 1997, Robert del Naja (3D) and Mushroom G and the extended cast of Tricky and Horace Andy play all the hits, including ones on the seminal Blue Lines ("Daydreaming"/"Safe From Harm") and its successor Protection ("Karmacoma"). Horace Andy is at his finest on the amazing "Man Next Door" while The Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser turned in a career highlight with her unmistakable voice on "Angel".

Review: Manchester's Aficionado label passes on the blunt to Stratus. Self-professed purveyor of "warped soundtracks, fuzzed-out psychedelia and Balearic tendencies", it's hard to argue with him when you listen to this one. On the first side is "Axis" with its spaghetti western vibes spread out over a chilled out and funky break. "Oxwich" is utterly sublime and utilises the sounds of a dreamy acoustic guitar on this imaginary film score. "Solstice" is the blissed out trip-hop vibes of yesteryear, but executed pretty damn well. Finally "Tisno" with its nice bongo rhythms and boogie bassline over dreamy early eighties synth work is as good as anything Max Essa's done.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!

Review: On his latest Sacred Rhythm compilation, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell says Thank You Universe, with a little help from his friends. According to the man himself, the collection was inspired by "a desperate need for World healing". Regardless of the New York producer's inspirations, what's delivered is an enjoyable set of global musical fusions that touches on jazz, Latin beats, African rhythms, downtempo grooves, ambient and, of course, decidedly cosmic deep house. Highlights include the blissful Afro-house loveliness of Clausell's own "With More Love", the jazzy, late night wonder of Clausell's remix of Kuniyuki Takahashi's "All These Things", and the smooth, late night deep house of Unchained Rhythms' "Wall Of The Heart".

Review: Back in 2011, Nicolas Jaar joined forces with fellow Clown & Sunset contributor Dave Harrington for the Darkside EP, an impressive trio of untitled tracks that pitted the formers scratchy, near-paranoid production style against the latter's penchant for lo-fi indie-rock inspired fuzziness. Here, the duo dusts down the Darkside alias once more for a first collaborative album. Predictably, it's an impressive set, offering a collection of downtempo tracks that shuffle between crackly, out-there atmospherics ("Sitra", reminiscent of much of Jaar's Space is Only Noise album), echo-laden alt-rock experimentalism ("Heart") and heart-aching fragility (the James Blake-ish "Greek Light").

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Little do people know that Coober Pedy is an opal rich town buried deep within the red and arid outback of South Australia. Lewie Day (aka Tornado Wallace) and Tom Moore may be from Melbourne, but the duo make up the Coober Pedy University Band, coining the term "Krautback" to describe this Moon Plain EP. Drawing upon italo synths and mid-tempo Balearica as inspiration, the first release comes in 12" form via Soft Rocks' Kinfolk label. The reverb washed Australian crooner Chet Faker appears on the title track "Moon Plain" alongside heavy struck piano chords, while "Sentenced Beyond The Seas" is a flow of groggy atmospheres and downtempo beats. "Oblong" is the the EPs stand out italo track with short bass arpeggios a highlight, while Soft Rocks "Acperience" mix of "Moon Plain" takes on an acidic and space western theme.

'Thirteenth Roll in A Bakers Dozen' takes a slower spaced out route. '10 Dollars' conitnues in the same mode but this time with guitar and a super heavy synth line pushing the driving force along and finally Soft Rocks grab a hold of '10 Dollars' and turn it into a John Carpenter-esque electro groover.

Review: Despite her obvious chart-bothering credentials, former Moloko chanteuse Roisin Murphy has tended towards the experimental end of pop on her solo albums. Hairless Toys, her first full-length for eight years, continues this trend, delivering a range of woozy, fluid and unusual tracks that combine strong lyrics and vocals with catchy hooks and a variety of musical backdrops that slyly make reference to everything from jazz, disco and Italo to off-kilter electronica, skittering deep house and Americana. It's a truly unique combination, but one in keeping with the exiled Irish singer's curiously eclectic career. More importantly, Hairless Toys may be her strongest solo set to date.

Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

Pun fan Eltron John leads the way, hogging the A-side with a 10-minute rework of "Sloneczny Pyl" that transforms the ambient original into a skipping house cut primed for the sun-glistening summer afternoons on a crowded terrace. Das Komplex offers a change in mood on his remix of "Ostatni Kurs", flushing the track with a sense of contemplation and melancholia through canny usage of delay, whilst Ptaki slow it right down with bonus original Balearic cut "Taniec Na Wodzie."

Review: Russia's Lapti has been away from the scene for a while, because his so called brand of 'vaporwave' is exactly the sort fo thing we're into when it comes to abstract moulds of ambient and drone. He returns to action after four years with blinding album on his native Ghost Zvuk label, bringing through a truly fresh and daring blend of electronic sounds. "Ushu", for instance, deserves no categorization thanks to its odd broken beats and swelling mutant bass, and the equally excellent "plague" is an experimental hip hop tune from the depths of the inferno. There's so much in this LP that it's almost beyond description; what we can say is that if you're looking for something that truly blurs the lines, then Lapti is the man for you. Very hotly recommended.

Review: The Running Back affiliated Mondo label is back with more impressive Balearic and chillout grooves. This follows up the tremendous compilation album; Collezione, which was released earlier this year. Label boss Francesco de Bellis aka L.U.C.A. appears with several long time collaborators such as Raiders Of The Lost Arp with the smooth astral travelling vibes of "Niagara (Rotla Version)". He then teams up with Polysick on the "Afghanistan Version" which is the smooth cruising psych-rock derivative that Psychemagik would sit up and notice. Finally it's L.U.C.A. Himself with the "Quirky Version" an intense retro house throwback in the vein of Lauer or Tuff City Kids and not being shy on the funk bass or heavy claps.

Review: Jon Tye and Pete Fowler's work together under the Seahawks banner is characterised by a few key elements; firstly they've been hugely prolific since first collaborating as Seahawks with no less than eight previous albums to their name. In addition, there's always a richness in texture and attention to detail which is unsurprising given Tye's work at the head of Lo Recordings and Fowler's respected career as an illustrator. With their cosmic brand of space rock and Balearica now down to a fine art, the latest Seahawks long player Paradise Freaks sees Tye and Fowler at their most ambitious with a high profile cast of supporting musicians that includes Maria Minerva, Tim Burgess, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and Hot Chip's Al Doyle and Grovesnor crooner Rob Smoughton. The resultant eight track set is as dreamy as you can hope for from the good ship Seahawks.

Review: Given the richness of texture that characterises Jon Tye and Pete Fowler's prolific work together under the Seahawks name, it's no surprise to see such a splendid cast of artists willing to dive in and play around with their music. And so we have Deep Haul, a collection of remixes, redubs, reworks and what not featuring the likes of Prins Thomas, Ruf Dug, Secret Circuit, Pye Corner Audio and more casting their sonic magic over some gems from the Seahawks discography. It's little surprise Scandolearic don Prins Thomas comes through with an early highlight in the shape of a deft electronic disco rework of "Look At The Sun" (that bassline) but don't brush over Rune Lindbaek's sub aquatic Balearic Italo take on "Rainbow Sun" or the charmingly warm Forever Sound remix of "Paradise Freaks".

Review: The latest release on Jonny Nash's Melody As Truth label sees Los Angeles-based talent Diego Herrera come forth with a new album under his familiar Suzanne Kraft moniker. It is of course just one of several projects the West Coast artist is involved in (Pharoahs, Dude Energy, Blase being several others) but the overall sunkissed, melodically rich sound he brings to them all make him a perfect fit for Melody As Truth. The seven tracks on Talk From Home were recorded over a few weeks in the winter of 2014, and feature Herrera playing guitar alongside more familiar synth tones in a mood that stays resolutely mellow from start to finish. Its three releases deep for Nash's label now and all of them have been sublime.

Review: Formerly of Classixx fame, Michael David makes his Studio Paradiso debut with two chillingly beautiful moments of Balearica. "Ohana" is a smooth, synth-soaked slo-mo boogie moment that wouldn't sound amiss in a Mudd or Aeroplane selection. "Samurai Dreams" takes us deeper into David's world again... A project created as a hobbiest score to a soft porn film directed by David Cronenberg, it's a beatless web of spiralling arpeggios that are so well tamed and wet sounding they'd make Moroder blush. Sexy.

Review: Anything... A fitting title for such the sprawling melodic swamp of ideas, textures and tones that comprises the fifth album LA-based funkateer Wes Gray has released as Moon B. Landing in the same sumptuous zone as his records for PPU, Going Good and others, each cut could easily branch out into several as refrains and melodic tangents fly and whirl around a touchstone cosmic beat. From the lo-fi, sun-melted Betamax soul of "Punya" to the chewy gluey electro boogie of "Atmosfear" and the dense disco dynamics of "Ban Ki", Moon B's deep dream leftfield fusion keeps on ploughing into the electronic unknown where Anything goes.

  4. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
Review: Question: How do you follow your last release that featured high profile remix treatments from Messrs Harvey Bassett and Kenneth Dixon Jnr? Los Angeles trio Pollyn have decided to answer that quandary by showing their own strength in the art of reinterpreting other's music on this rather party friendly burgundy twelve inch which features tracks from Liquid Liquid, Gorillaz, The Eurhythmics and Paul Simon. Sal P's ledgendary NYC troupe have their instantly recognisable "Optimo" given the Pollyn treatment, the trio succeed in stamping their own woozy psychedelic intentions while remaining faithful to what's a punk funk classic. A similar approach is taken to the Gorillaz track "DARE" which has Mr Albarn's high pitched tones taken on by singer Genevieve Artadi while keeping Shaun Ryder's participation intact - nice rhythmic switch up on this too. On the flip, "Take Me To Your Heart" by The Eurhythmics gets a punk funk cover from Pollyn that could feasibly find a comfortable home on a DFA B Side while little Paulie's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" gets a subtle rolling re-edit.
