Review: Single LP Editrion: While their 50 Weapons imprint may be winding up, Modeselektor's Monkeytown imprint is still in full swing, releasing all sorts of interesting electronic music lately from producers as diverse as Robot Koch, Omar Souleyman and Howling. This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available soon as well.

Review: Berlin-based singer/songwriter Dillon was something of a curiosity when she first emerged in 2011, with her debut album This Science Kills sounding like Kate Bush reared on lo-fi indie and fuzzy electronics. Arguably, it was the album's more electronic moments that stood out. Happily, she's moved further in this direction on sophomore set The Unknown. While there are still moments of intense fragility - see the piano lament "A Matter of Time" and the decidedly touchy-feely "In Lightning" - the album really soars when Dillon wraps her distinct vocals around moody analogue electronics and sparse, late night ambience (see "In Silence", the dubstep-influenced "Nowhere" and the super-sparse synth-pop of "Don't Go").

  4. Fortune Lagoon
  5. Body Wave
Review: Rudy (aka Robin Lee from Faze Action) makes a welcome return on FAR, taking in the atmosphere of sunnier climes.

The title tracks opening cascades and swirling synths fall into an easy Balearic groove, with singing melodies, exotic marimbas, a chugging synth bass and production echoing a mix of Compass Point, Grace Jones et all on holiday in Europe, whilst setting the scene for the EP. The 2nd track is introduced by hypnotic tones against analog synth arpeggios and haunting synth solos, invoking the "Sky Goddess". Back down to earth on the flip side is an invitation to sail down the "Shimmering Coast", with its relaxed guitar groove and keyboard flourishes all underpinned by a stunning 80s sounding bass line. Dropping anchor at "Fortune Lagoon", we are treated to some of Rudy's personally designed analog keyboard sounds, which mange to challenge yet retain tropical warmth.

Finally live chorus bass introduces us to "Body Wave" which manages to fuse easy French Disco with jazzy Fender Rhodes hooks. By Nature is a reflection of white washed houses, palm trees, refreshing coastal beaches and yacht parties. Don't forget your sunglasses and tanning oil!

Review: The Excursion Africanism LP is the debut album of legendary Italian DJ Domenico Cantarella aka Jose Manuel on Copenhagen imprint Music For Dreams. He has released previously on Eskimo Recordings, Kill The DJ, Cocktail D'Amore and Is It Balearic. There is some authentic exoticism on offer on the wonderful title track, some woozy and mysterious raindance accompaniment on "Magic", some emotional African folk music on "Bilimbosa" (featuring Babacar Dieng's amazing vocal talents) and of course the brilliant "Hungry" which even gets a killer remix by Ibiza legend Leo Mas with Fabrice.

Review: One-time Witch Doctor "Prins" Emanuel Sundin has shown plenty of promise on his three EPs to date, so hopes are naturally high for this belated debut album. Across two slabs of wax, the producer expands on his loose, organic disco template, drawing on influences including krautrock, kosmiche, Scandolearic disco, dub reggae, calypso, new age, and skewed boogie. It's an entertaining and typically melodious affair, full of instrumental cuts that impressively tiptoe the fine line between Balearic goodness and full-on dancefloor disco. The second record heads further towards downtempo territory, whilst retaining the key musical ingredients of Sundin's ear-pleasing blueprint.

Review: Having introduced Gigi Masin to a wider audience via the brilliant Talk To The Sea compilation back in 2014, Music From Memory is now attempting to do the same with Suso Saiz. Like Masin, Saiz was a new age/ambient pioneer in his country (in this case, Spain), releasing a smattering of obscure solo albums between 1984 and the present day. The material on Odisea - dreamy, stripped-back, evocative, occasionally breezy and largely built around vintage synthesizers and his own, Steve Hillage-like guitar work - is taken from those albums, as well as an obscure cassette-only release. As usual, the Amsterdam diggers have also included a number of previously unreleased tracks, drawn from the musician's extensive archives. It all ads up to another must have compilation from Europe's premier Balearic archivists.

Review: Parisian enfant terribles Antinote are back and this time present us with Nico Motte, the label's in-house graphic designer and one half of graphic design entity Check Morris. Following up 2014's Rhelogia EP, Motte serves up a brilliantly eclectic album exploring the Balearic, cosmic and downbeat across this fascinating journey. Starting out with the "Tema D'Amore" which sounds like something early 80's film soundtrack that was rescued for the cutting room floor, there's also the vintage Chicago house vibes of "ICA", the sombre and breathtaking ambience of "Tiger For Breakfast" and the sultry minimal disco of "Tacotac" among others. Music for modern lovers, young poets and the artists.

Review: Having been uncovered by International Feel late last year, the archival Balericisms of Len Leise now make their way over to the similarly minded Aficionado label. The five tracks on this dashing red 12" were apparently sourced from a rare cassette of rainforest swelter, and it's up to you, the consumer, how much of your time you invest in this fanciful backstory to Leise's work. Should you choose to put it to one side, you will be rewarding with a wondrous array of delicate electronics and organic instrumentation that is wholly captivating from the moment "Asmat Images" locks into groove. As with previous output on Aficionado, this won't be on the shelves for long!!

Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Review: Launched last year, the Balearic Blah Bah label has become a fine platform for a certain Danish producer whose initials are KBE to flex his scalpel skills at some of the rarities and oddities that make up the Balearic genre. A sixth release arrives, suggesting KBE is nowhere near to exhausting his archive of material and this 12" features another quartet of cuts that will find favour with the more horizontally inclined selectors out there. Head straight to "Run For Fun" if you want some classic Compass Point vibes, whilst B side jazz funk burner "Chak Hahn" is a real diamond of a track. The moment that Moog line gives way to a wondrous "La La La" vocal harmony really hits the spot

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

  3. Let Feel Higher
Review: Having previously plied their wares on Is It Balearic and Los Grandes, Spanish nu-Balearic sorts Two Mamarrachos pop up on another suitably horizontal imprint, dependable Leeds label Joe's Bakery. There style is sun-kissed by druggy, with opener "Al Andalus" offering an exotic, chugging blend of foreboding, low-slung grooves and Arabic synthesizer melodies. "Super Disco Dancer" delves deep into the box marked "experimental analogue electronic disco", with heady, spaced-out synthesizers sprawling all over a typically atmospheric, cosmic groove. "Let Feel Higher" is, arguably, the most Balearic of the three, with warm acoustic guitars and delay-laden gospel vocal samples creating a suitably toasty, glassy-eyed mood.

Review: New Zealand-birthed Dreampop chanteuse Tamaryn Brown has found considerable renown as a sculptor of exquisite ethereal serenades, and 'Cranekiss' forms a portrait of her as a resolutely modern artist who can balance out a hook-heavy pop sensibility with a rare grasp of texture and atmosphere. Within these sonds are both moments of giddy rapture that hark back to the finest '80s work of Cocteau Twins and a sample-and-beat-driven tautness that serves to make 'Cranekiss' a work of brittle intensity as well as feast for the senses. With her voice front and centre even amidst the shoegaze melee, this is a record set to find the approval of more than merely 4AD aficianados.

Review: Chromatics are an electronic outfit from Portland, Oregon, made up of Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Nat Walker, and Johnny Jewel. Together they've been making music since the early 2000s, and their primary home has been the excellent Italians Do It Better imprint, spear-headed by Mike Simonetti and Johnny Jewel himself. Tick Of The Clock is the band's eighth album to date, and their first since 2012's Running From The Sun. "Tick For The Clock" is made up of three parts: the 'edit for film' version is a chuggy, lo-fi, drum-machine-heavy cut with a gorgeous bassline and intricate atmospherics; the Visione The Stroke Of Midnight edit is louder and packs a meaner punch in its groove; the extended overdrive mix goes back to the original but plays around with the arrangement more, darting in and out of the dark for added suspense.

Review: Given the hype surrounding HNNY over the last few years - fuelled, primarily, by a string of celebrated singles on Puss, Local Talk, Let's Play House and YUMMY - it's somewhat surprising that Sunday marks his first foray into the album market. Wisely, the Swedish artist embraced the opportunity for eclecticism that the format provides, filling his debut full-length with a mix of tracks variously designed for sofa-bound listening and dancing in clubs. There's a jazz-flecked beauty to the crackly downtempo grooves offered up by the title track, while the dreamy, guitar-laced head-nodder "Sylvia" recalls the best of his Balearic-influenced work. It's these luscious moments, such as the twinkling ambience of closer "My Baby", that really resonate.

Review: Russian label Udacha are purveyors of dreamy and mysterious deep house. This new one by Gamayun is further testament to their current modus operandi. On the first side we have "Roundelay" with its warped and ethereal tropical vibe, assisting you in drifting away from it all just nicely. Next the soothing piano line of "All Tomorrows" backed by a wacky bassline and restrained rhythm section is equally as mesmerising. On the flip we have "Outlands" with its swirling, all consuming pads backed by sultry Latin style rhythms and that killer synth solo. Lastly there's "Oracle" with its sweet, late nineties deep house vibes that fans of Agnes and Quarion would be right into.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

  6. Everything You Do Is A Balloon
Review: Boom! Finally another reissue of Boards Of Canada's seminal Hi Scores LP from 1996! Along with the likes of Aphex Twin, LFO and Squarepusher, these guys have helped to define how we see electronic music today and this particular LP is arguably their most complete when it comes to the dancefloor. The title track is a twisted, floaty bindle of breaks and beats, but it doesn't end there. Tracks like "Nlogax" are inherently Detroitian in nature thanks to the bleepy drum machines inside, and all we can say is that if you haven't laid hands on this album yet, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to cop it now. It's still so relevant and contemporary, it hurts.

Review: Following two albums that dealt principally in stately electronic pop , 'United Crushers' marks something of a turning point for this Minneapolis-birthed outfit. Led by vocalist Channy Leaneagh, they've produced a collection of synth-driven ditties considerably more direct and engaging that those of yore. Leaneagh's voice is clearer, her motivations charged by both personal and political, and both melodic flourishes and beat-driven backdrops are forceful and stimulating both. Where Polica once figuratively kept their distance, 'United Crushers' marks the point where they wear their hearts on their sleeve, and on the evidence of these luminous and engaging album it's been a gamble worth taking.

Remixes (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EESS 001 / FN 004. Rel: 29 Aug 16
  1. Babadag (Khidja remix)
  2. Shop (Mehmet Aslan remix)
  3. Doamne Ce Greseala Am (Mehmet Aslan remix)
  4. 1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

  1. Aggas
  2. Stollice
Review: Stuttgart club night Kitjen has decided to launch a label. For this debut release, they've turned to Tuff City Kids man Phillip Lauer and brother Jacob, who deliver their second 12" under the Hotel Lauer alias (their first, Brudis, dropped on Live At Robert Johnson last year). A-side "Agass" sets the tone, layering addictively bright piano riffs and expansive, tumbling synthesizer melodies over foreboding, one-note chords and jaunty drum machine rhythms. The classic feel continues on flipside "Stollice", where synthesized strings wrap themselves around a deliciously glassy-eyed Balearic house groove and stabbing, rave-era electronics. Both tracks are impressively dancefloor-friendly, eschewing the obvious in favour of lesser-played inspirations.

Review: Jon Tye and Pete Fowler's work together under the Seahawks banner is characterised by a few key elements; firstly they've been hugely prolific since first collaborating as Seahawks with no less than eight previous albums to their name. In addition, there's always a richness in texture and attention to detail which is unsurprising given Tye's work at the head of Lo Recordings and Fowler's respected career as an illustrator. With their cosmic brand of space rock and Balearica now down to a fine art, the latest Seahawks long player Paradise Freaks sees Tye and Fowler at their most ambitious with a high profile cast of supporting musicians that includes Maria Minerva, Tim Burgess, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and Hot Chip's Al Doyle and Grovesnor crooner Rob Smoughton. The resultant eight track set is as dreamy as you can hope for from the good ship Seahawks.

Review: "A side brings Rudman's finest house sounds , for this heavy dancefloor produced track, but in the same time moody and balearic , with a strong synth bassline that easely took control of the vibe and transformed it to a strong dance effect. For the B - side Imogen meets NuNorthern Soul artist Dos Palos , with a slower tempo track , with Ilija Rudman's instrumental stripped down mix of the Lady Of The West Way . This remix sounds and could easily be integrated in any motion picture end having that powerful vibe of goodbye ."

Review: Tobi Neumann and Marco Unzip's ToCo project unveils itself with deft subtlety and relaxed restraint. Both respected in the techno realm, "Right Place" sees them switching to something a lot baggier, spacious and fun. "Right Place" is a slow palpitation session with cosmic overlays and dense bass plods ebbing and flowing, "Supafly" is U.F.Orb era synthetic funk while "Sweet Elisa" is a Map Of Africa-style soiree into cushioned cosmic disco. Some side projects shine with so much creativity they outweigh the sum of their parts, ToCo is definitely one of them.

Review: Whether it's part of Hype Williams alongside Inga Copeland or with his solo material, Dean Blunt seems to delight in confounding expectations. Over the years, he's offered releases that steadfastly refuse to fit into any neat pattern. The Redeemer maintains this diverse approach, largely stepping away from the experimental electronics of last year's Hyperdub LP with Inga Copeland in favour of a more fragile, heartfelt sound that prioritizes acoustic guitars, harps, mournful strings and emotionally raw lyrics over drum machines and hissing pops and crackles. It makes for an arresting, if surprising, set, one which retains interest thanks not only to the emotion-rich feel of its music, but Blunt's impeccable sequencing skills. Certainly, it squeezes more unfussy, simple beauty into 70 minutes than anything he's done previously.
