Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

Review: Emotional Rescue label boss Stuart Leath is particularly excited about this release, and it's not hard to see why. While Spanish singer/songwriter Javier Bergia is not widely known in the UK, his releases - either solo, or as part of the Finas Africae and Arium Musicae groups - are held in high regard by those of a Balearic persuasion. Eclipse is something of a treat, gathering together the best of Bergia's solo work from 1985 to the present day. Featuring Bergia's spoken and sung vocals atop a mix of gentle acoustics, atmospheric strings, delay-laden percussion and subtle global rhythms, Eclipse impresses from start to finish. It should be essential listening for anyone with even the tiniest interest in Balearica.

Review: Last year's Magic Cyrcles, Psychemagik's willy-waving exercise in psychedelic disco and rock crate digging, was something of a triumph. It's little surprise, then, that this follow-up is every bit as essential. If anything, the selections are even more obscure, while the vibe is slightly more Balearic - whilst, of course, retaining the acid-fried oddness of its predecessor. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the woozy synths and wide-eyed, feelgood grooves of Fox's "The Juggler", and Steve and Theresa's folksy "Catching A Wave", to the horizontal pop of former porn acrtress Susana Estrada, and Joey Newman's Roxy Music-ish "The One You Love". Recommended.

Review: There are few record collectors and DJs with crates quite as deep as Psychemagik. They've already proved this beyond doubt via a trio of brilliant Magik compilations for Paul Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng label. Magik Sunset Part 2 continues this run, gathering together another double-album's worth of fantastic obscurities from the worlds of stoner disco, left-of-centre rock, psychedelia and Balearica. As usual, there are some genuine "how did I not know about this record" moments, from the star-kissed Balearic jazz of Fabio Fabor and saucer-eyed white boy reggae-rock of the Trepidants, to the Flamenco-tinged AOR disco shuffle of Jack Adkins' "Sunset Beach".

Review: The much delayed and even more awaited Spike retrospective from Golf Channel is finally here! For the uninitiated, Spike Wolters was responsible for a series of self released albums in the early 80s recorded using all manner of primitive drum machines, synths and guitars which resulted in some of the most diverse FX laden, ahead of it's time music. Mentioned in hushed tones by feverish record traders for years to come, Spike's work was first introduced to the wider world by Golf Channel in 2011, with the New York label issuing Magic Table, a 12" featuring some of the Dutchman's compositions backed with remixes from Thomas 'Welcome Stranger' Bullock. Fast forward several years and the label has finally issued Orange Cloud Nine, a sixteen track retrospective which draws from the four albums Wolters recorded in the 1980s. Like most Golf Channel output, it's a must not least for the in-depth sleeve notes from Test Pressing's Japan-based DJ and record collector Rob Harris and the the visually striking artwork by Perks & Mini's co-founder Misha Hollenbach

  6. Careful (1:49)
Review: Later in the year, Golf Channel is set to release Orange Cloud Versions, a set containing brand new remixes and covers of obscure early '80s material by post-punk, blue-eyed-soul bluesman Spike Wolters. The headline attraction of this teaser 12" is Justin Vandervolgen's brilliant, club-friendly tweak of Chris "Sexican" Munoz's remix of "Sometimes", which layers Wolters' impassioned vocal over a thumping, house-tinged dub-disco groove. The rest of the EP contains more obscure, rarely heard Wolters material from the archives, including the evocative, out-there bliss of "Seebelebbad", and the tactile, late night, cosmic soul of "You Can Do It". Stellar stuff, all told.

Review: Surprisingly, it's been some four years since Croat producer Ilija Rudman dropped his much-played debut album, The Reveal, on Bear Funk. Happily, True Colours - his first outing on Is It Balearic - sees him in fine form, joining the dots between kaleidoscopic synth-funk, rubbery dub-disco, spaced-out boogie and glassy-eyed downtempo jams. Rudman is an expert at capturing the sounds of bygone eras, usually through the use of vintage equipment, while delivering tracks that sound thoroughly fresh and original. It's this that makes True Colours such a fantastic set. Highlights are plentiful, from the close dance smoothness of "Bad Passion" and boogie dub vibes of "All The Time" (check the delay-laden hits and sweeping violins) to the jaunty electro-goes-Balearic brilliance of "Wild Guess".

  4. Guam (Deep 88 remix) (6:15)
Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

Review: 6LP Boxset Editrion: While their 50 Weapons imprint may be winding up, Modeselektor's Monkeytown imprint is still in full swing, releasing all sorts of interesting electronic music lately from producers as diverse as Robot Koch, Omar Souleyman and Howling. This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available here along with all the instrumental versions

Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

Review: Known best for his role in cultish Swedish production unit Studio alongside Rasmus Hagg, Dan Lissvik has resurfaced on Smalltown Supersound with the first of a series of singles that will precede a much talked about solo album for the label. Those familiar with the sumptuous cosmic meanderings of Studio will be immediately at home here as soon as those velvety keys roll out over field recordings on "Intro" and from here Lissvik opens up his sound palette in panoramic style. "Airwalk" is quintessential Scandofunk, taut basslines, ethereal vocal harmonies and rich yet subtle instrumentation whilst there is a delightful flutter to the title track "Shuvit" that will captivate Lissvik completists. More please!

Review: Hell Yeah Recordings has gathered together an all-star cast to remix Underground System's "Bella Ciao", a punchy, horn-heavy dub disco cut based on a popular Italian chant. The A-side boasts a collaborative rework from Leo Mas, Fabrice Laguna and Gigi Masin, which brilliantly slows down the original to a stoned crawl, with the latter's impeccable synths and piano solos creating an undeniably horizontal, sun-kissed mood. The flipside "On Air Mix" by Mas and Laguna is, if anything, even better, stripping the original back to little more than a heavy dub bassline, delay-laden trumpet solos and sparse percussion hits.

Review: Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: **RUFFY REPRESS** RBMA alumni Ruf Dug ups the ante with his debut album. According to legend it was written during 12 weeks of island paradise in Guadeloupe. But as his previous work (all written in Manchester) is as beautifully Balearic as this, who can tell? Stretching his signature and a great sense of space throughout, he flexes from pretty raw, head-bendy dancefloor (the 2020 Soundsystem style build on "Speedboat" and the sprightly tech lollops of "Mosquito") to the film-like and vaguely discordant ("Mangrove Dub") via the totally immersive and alluring (the stunning, spine-melting overlapping arpeggios of "Shoreline"). Regardless of where he wrote it, it's a highly accomplished album... And perfectly timed for the sunny season.

Review: Those of a certain vintage may have a soft spot for Global Underground's After Hours series, which promised to soundtrack "the party after the club" by joining the dots between woozy progressive house, deep techno, electronica and, of course, ambient. Some eight years after the last installment, the long-running club brand has decided to re-launch the series. Apparently, this latest installment took a year to put together, and featured tweaked, edited and gently reworked tunes layered up for a more enjoyable listening experience. Musically, it sticks to similar territory to previous installments, updating the sound a little via tracks and remixes from Ewan Pearson, Lawrence, Scuba, Matrixxman, Michael Mayer and Joris Voorn.

Review: The above board Balearica stable come through with their 20th episode of the series and drop four 'new' artist additions on their ever-impressive and ever-growing catalogue. The term 'balearic' should be obvious by now, so we're not talking genres here but simply aesthetic and mood. "Il Veliero" by The Chaplin Band is an Italian 70's gem with some seriously funky vocal work, while The Double Brother's "Flying Cloud" is slower, moodier but irresistibly seductive. On the flip, Boule Noire drop the boogy-tastic and ultra-deep "Aimer D'Amour", and "A Touch Of Temptation" by Masaaki Ohmura ties things off in a meditative lo-fi mood thanks to its starry synths and lazy beats. Quality as per usual.

Review: Having finished releasing 12" samplers for their superb sophomore set See You When You Get There, Session Victim return to the Retreat label they co-run with a trio of brand new tracks. There's a brilliantly dense and humid feel to the undulating bass, cowbell-heavy beats and jaunty melodies of opener "Summer Games", which is as sticky, sweaty and life-affirming as the title suggests. Turn over for "Black Cream", a typically jazzy and percussion-heavy slice of blissful deep house that makes great use of an extended, chord-heavy breakdown. Finally, the German duo explores the downtempo side of their trademark sound with "Finderlohn", whose lazy flamenco guitars, chopped-up beats and thickset chords suggests an attempt to capture a Balearic mood.

Review: Is It Balearic..? side label Magic Wand return for an eighth installment here with founders Coyote present and correct and complimented by productions from Magellanic Cloud & Oyama. It's Coyote that commence proceedings with the hazy eyed disco loopery of "Hanging" which sounds like a glorious Love Unlimited Orchestra moment unfurled into infinity. "In Your Wildest Dreams" finds Magellanic Cloud in a more horizontal mood, with a gently throbbing undercurrent adding a hint of darkness. The uncredited "We Love Japan Brother Ninjas" is possibly the highlight here, sitting somewhere between heavily dubbed disco and proto house, whilst the Oyama edit of "Dreams" will appeal to fans of Torn Hawk's plaintive guitar noodlings.

Review: A certain Danish downtempo sort once again dons his KBE guise for a third selection of decidedly White Isle-friendly re-edits on his Balearic Blah Blah imprint. As usual, there's much to admire, from the beachside haziness of "Day Off" (seemingly a re-edit of a reggae-flecked Chris Rea track), to the rubbery electric bass and winding synths of "Exitsign" (a pleasing extension of a largely ignored, "Fascination"-era Human League track). Elsewhere, there's a welcome re-dub of Larry Levan fave "Pull Up To The Bumper" by Grace Jones, and "Dub To Me", a picturesque, guitar-flecked chugger that's almost the epitome of '80s Balearica.

Review: Balearic Blah Blah make a fashionably late entrance into 2016 with a fittingly beautiful double-A that's standardly super-limited. Nothing is known about Senor M but here's what we can confirm: "Carbo" is the ultimate beach tune with its soft ebb and flow chords, lazy, slouching breakbeat and precision crafted Japanese sample. "Time" is just a tiny bit more upbeat with its sun-kissed dub vibe and sweeping nod to a long sought after classic. We waste time spoiling the surprise...

Review: Cafe Romantica sees rising Melbourne producer Andras Fox team up with Oscar S. Thorn again for a richly deserved follow up to last year's Embassy Cafe LP for Dopeness Galore. Fox's star is definitely on the rise at the moment, with a recent 12" for Mexican Summer and Overworld, a highly regarded solo LP of smudged new age as A.R.T. Wilson. It was Embassy Cafe that arguably put Fox on the map, his raw and deep productions the perfect backing for Thorn's distinct vocal delivery and fans of that set will be pleased to hear the pair's chemistry is just as evident on Cafe Romantica. Some eight tracks deep, there's a real pleasant vibe throughout evoking that classic Dream 2 Science feel and will find equal favour amongst the home listeners and the club selectors.

Review: After completing a hat trick of essential releases with "Seaside Tune", Russia's king of lilting melodies, coastal flavours and sunkissed sounds returns with his latest must have release. Back once again on his own Mellophonia imprint, A Vision Of Panorama invites us aboard his luxury yacht for a carefree journey across the ocean. Opening with the animalistic chatter of the Brazilian cuica and a chirping synth melody, "Two Birds" instantly transports us to tropical climes where the breeze plays among the palm trees and the clear waters kiss the white sand. Title track "New Horizons" sees the tempo drop to a languid strut as the fretless bassline takes our dancing bodies under its control. The bright tuned percussion, misty pads and mystical woodwind offer light and shade at the top end, while that Balearic beat should keep the dancefloor moving. As we follow the suns arc onto the B-side, A Vision Of Panorama turns up the heat and the tempo for the beachside proto-house peach "Coastal Waves". The deep and warm...

Review: This debut album from The Very Polish Cut-Outs stalwarts PTaki has been a long time coming, having originally been mooted for release back in 2013. It's clearly undergone many changes since then, but the Warsaw-based act's formula - samples of obscure Polish music, plus analogue beats and old-fashioned studio trickery - remains in tact. Przelot is an impressive set, all told, with sinewy, organic-sounding Balearic gems (see the classical guitars of blissful closer "Jelitkowo" and sun-kissed "Girlcandy") being joined by more adventurous, drum machine-based cuts that variously doff a cap to out-there dub (the brilliant "Nie Zabijaj"), slow acid (the equally inspired "Ostani Kurs"), and impossibly intoxicating downtempo jazz ("Juz Kocham Cie Tyle").

Review: Mic Newman, or otherwise known as the one and only Fantastic Man, returns to Fine Choice Records with yet more of his very own organic house music. With previous outings on Wolf Music and Let's Play House, among others, Fantastic Man has now weaved his way into dance music's epicentre and his tunes have been coveted by the likes of London's Tief and Feel My Bicep crews. "Snake Charmer" is a tropical house lick complete with monkey sounds and all, whereas "Donkey Punch" is somewhat of a hybrid thanks to its broken beat pattern and oddball bassline - what a peach! Over on the B-side, "El Tropo" is an uber deep cut with a rather lovely set of Balearic melodies, but the real treat is "Birds Of Paradise" thanks to its utter neglect of a 4/4 beat pattern. Instead, Newman creates a tight, functional groove out of sparse and airy flurries of sound. Recommended.

Review: Hot on the heels of his Whiskey Disco EP, Mathieu Cle continues to the soundtrack the summer of his life with two more blissful, shimmering slices of Balearica. "Horizon" unravels by way of lush breezy pads and slippery guitars and easy-flowing keys that gradually take more and more of the spotlight, like a welcomed ship sailing closer and closer. "Night Motel" is takes us deeper into the evening with light skippy breaks and subtle samplecraft. Remix-wise The Project Club deconstruct "Horizon" and rebuild it with the same crisp psych rock tones as Pacqua might do while Maricopa goes right back to the late 80s with full emphasis on the synthetic strings and flutes. Paradise is open for business once again...

Review: ** Repress ** Donato Dozzy is spoken about in hushed tones by anyone worth their techno salt. On the K LP he shows us why: across seven unnamed tracks the Italian producer takes us on a journey that at times is calming and ambient; at others hazy and atmospheric. Few producers before him can have been so adept at producing richly textured, melodic techno, with the almost deathly slow opening track leading into a truly unique and rewarding listening experience. Importantly, Dozzy never strays too far into esoteric territory a€" this is still palpably techno music. Originally released as a limited edition cassette on Further Records, this double LP is lovingly packaged in screen printed casing. Seriously collectable.

Review: Russia's Lapti has been away from the scene for a while, because his so called brand of 'vaporwave' is exactly the sort fo thing we're into when it comes to abstract moulds of ambient and drone. He returns to action after four years with blinding album on his native Ghost Zvuk label, bringing through a truly fresh and daring blend of electronic sounds. "Ushu", for instance, deserves no categorization thanks to its odd broken beats and swelling mutant bass, and the equally excellent "plague" is an experimental hip hop tune from the depths of the inferno. There's so much in this LP that it's almost beyond description; what we can say is that if you're looking for something that truly blurs the lines, then Lapti is the man for you. Very hotly recommended.

Review: Dolly man Brooks Mosher is a man of many talents, it seems. Not content with serving up tasty deep house and dusty techno jams, he's decided to launch a new ambient alias, Cinematic 74. His debut album under the pseudonym, Realtime Inverted, is something of a treat, particularly for those raised on a diet of early '90s material from Mixmaster Morris, The Orb, Pete Namlook and Jonah Sharp. Woozy, melodious and spacey, it feels like an authentic period piece, complete with Global Communication style bubblers, heavenly Detroit techno influences, heavy dub basslines, and oblique early Internet references. Above all, it makes for wonderful listening.
