  2. Vandre (Marvin & Guy Halal sensation) (8:07)
  3. Ossain (8:03)
  4. Dengo (6:26)
Review: Having established themselves as purveyors of fine, Middle Eastern-inspired fare, Disco Halal has decided to apply their magic touch to South American music, with the assistance of specialists Selvagem and Carrot Green. As usual, the emphasis is on blending obscure source material with original music and production. This works particularly well on "Vandre", where an acoustic samba number is turned into a bubbling, Balearic house gem via glistening electronics, synthesized marimba lines and metronomic beats. Marvin and Guy go even further on their remix, turning in a blissful deep house chugger. Flip for the low-slung Brazilian disco-funk of "Dengo" and "Ossain", a misty-eyed, sunrise house number blessed with all manner of (sampled) Brazilian instrumentation.

Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

Review: International Feel have called on a stellar cast of producers for their mini-LP series so far, with Len Leise and CFCF setting a laid back tone. When the label first announced their plans, we were particularly excited by the mooted inclusion of Themes For Great Cities and Salon Des Amateurs regular Jan 'Wolf Muller' Schulte. This was primarily because the Dusseldorf artist was yet to extend himself creatively beyond the 12" format across his various projects to date. The Sound Of Glades sees Schulte step up, working with fellow German artist Cass, who was previously seen contributing to the closing SchleiBen installment on Emotional Response. The five sublime tracks were laid down at Schulte's self-styled Wolf Muller Flanger Studio Dusseldorf, between October 2015 and February 2016, with the pair offering up an aural love story to some of their closet new age and ambient influences. It's a delight from start to end.

Review: Napoleon Cherry is perhaps not the unknown name that Music From Memory excels at celebrating - PPU released a 12" of his brilliantly low-key soul workout "When You Had The Chance" earlier this year - but the Philadelphian musician's releases are certainly suitably hard to find. This career retrospective offers a mix of impossible-to-find tracks, many from his deliciously rare 1990 debut full-length, and previously unheard cuts. It portrays Cherry as a master of warm, evocative, Balearic soul and lo-fi synthesizer funk, whose analogue-rich releases were always out-of-step with the musical trends developing around him. Crucially, all 10 of these tracks are superb, making Walk Alone yet another essential Music From Memory purchase.

  1. Island Breeze (3:42)

  3. The Odyssey (3:32)
  4. Caravan Revisited (4:20)
Review: The latest volume in Music From Memory's impressive 12" series of reissued obscurities takes us back to late '80s St Louis and the hard to find world of Workdub. Formed of Virgil Work Jnr. and Nicholas Georgieff, Workdub's output was restricted to a pair of highly limited albums recorded between 1989 and 1992. All four tracks are taken from these two albums, and offer a lucid, ear-catching fusion of early ambient house electronics, experimental oriental synth-pop, alien jazz breaks, spacey Detroit influences, and stuttering drum machine rhythms. It's a hard-to-place but wonderfully evocative mixture, arguably best displayed on standout opener "Island Breeze". That said, the curiously Balearic, Tangerine Dream influenced "Caravan" is rather tasty, too, while its' ambient alternative mix, "Caravan Revisited" is almost overpowering in its' simple beauty.

Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

Review: The latest Transatlantyk transmission sees the killer Polish label revisit Ptaki's sublime debut Lp Przelot in the company of celebrated contemporaries Eltron John and Das Komplex for a remix 12". Pun fan Eltron John leads the way, hogging the A-side with a 10-minute rework of "Sloneczny Pyl" that transforms the ambient original into a skipping house cut primed for the sun-glistening summer afternoons on a crowded terrace. Das Komplex offers a change in mood on his remix of "Ostatni Kurs", flushing the track with a sense of contemplation and melancholia through canny usage of delay, whilst Ptaki slow it right down with bonus original Balearic cut "Taniec Na Wodzie."

Review: Four years after its original release, tracks from Land of Light's eponymous album get a new set of remixes. Fans of Lovefingers' ESP Institute label may recall the orginal remixes, released back in 2012, and this new set are just as essential. Kuniyuki Takahashi's take on the title track sets the tone, with sensuous ambient textures and gently warbling guitars creating an atmospheric mood. Tambien's version is just as esoteric, but slightly more understated, while Seahawks rounds off this latest remix package with his take on "Bell Rock Outpost". Juddery, slow-paced drums and warm, jazzy piano lines create another beautiful piece of music - tailor-made for those sunset moments.

Review: Gigi Masin's second coming after the wondrous Music From Memory retrospective back in 2014 has been one of contemporary music's most heart-warming stories, with the ever-smiling Venetian embracing new musical endeavours and friends. Alongside the Gaussian Curve album recorded with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash, Masin brought a degree of considered pedigree to the Lifted project on PAN. Outside of all this however, Masin has cultivated a strong musical bond with compatriots and Hell Yeah founders Tempelhof, with this album Tsuki arriving two years on from the trio's first LP-length sojourn together. Some nine tracks long, Tsuki will entrance Masin fans as the three musicians lead you on a gentle, warm and enveloping saunter through kosmische, new age and sounds reminiscent of the Japanese minimalist electronics pioneers.

Review: The iconic Finnish label Sahko Recordings comes correct once more with this 12" edition of the classic "Heaven Taste" by British art-rock troupe No-Man. Tim Bownes and Steven Wilson recorded "Heaven Taste" with the assistance of Mick Karn, Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen and Ben Coleman in studio sessions back in the summer of '92, with the track first surfacing as a rather epic, enveloping 21 minute version on the Painting Paradise EP for One Little Indian in 1993. Given the length and class, it is no surprise "Heaven Taste" was adopted by the emergent ambient techno scene rising in London in the early '90s with Mixmaster Morris a particular champion. This Sahko edition sees No-Man's Steven Wilson turn in an 11-minute edit that doesn't lose any of the original's finely crafted grandeur, whilst on the B-side Jimi Tenor pops up with a rearrangement that highlights his skill at playing the flute and keyboard!

Review: Anything... A fitting title for such the sprawling melodic swamp of ideas, textures and tones that comprises the fifth album LA-based funkateer Wes Gray has released as Moon B. Landing in the same sumptuous zone as his records for PPU, Going Good and others, each cut could easily branch out into several as refrains and melodic tangents fly and whirl around a touchstone cosmic beat. From the lo-fi, sun-melted Betamax soul of "Punya" to the chewy gluey electro boogie of "Atmosfear" and the dense disco dynamics of "Ban Ki", Moon B's deep dream leftfield fusion keeps on ploughing into the electronic unknown where Anything goes.

Review: Is It Balearic releases a debut EP from Clandestino's Joe Morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. The title track Golden Tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. Late afternoon sundowner vibrations. The second track Bayou has touches of Sueno Latino about it., an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. On the flip the first track Light Of The Moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. Warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. Finally we come to Mpondo Theme. Sounds of nature , Kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. A proper EP this covering all shades.

Review: Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain requires no introduction, and the French house legend has literally seen and done it all ever since his first productions began to surface and influence other house artists back in the early 1990's golden era. The majority of his music has been released on F Communications, but his latest studio album drops on EMI's Parlophone sublabel. The self-titled St Germain is a proper LP, not a mere collection of house tracks put together helter-skelter. Inside, you'll hear many of Navarre's influences and inspirations, from Afro tribal melodies, to jazzy influences and even Middle-Eastern chimes. It's a house album in structure, but much more than that beneath the surface...as it always was from the legend of French dance music.

Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Review: Quite surprisingly, The Triad is the first Pantha Du Prince solo full-length since 2010's well received Black Noise. Like that set, which saw Hendrick Weber continue his obsession with the melodious end of minimal techno, The Triad is a vibrant and picturesque affair, drawing influence from the late night atmospherics of James Blake, and the bubbly IDM of Boards of Canada, as much as the dancefloors of Berlin, Cologne or Frankfurt. As usual, Weber has managed to combine electronics with acoustic instrumentation without spoiling the shuffling dancefloor mood, and the album's various vocal tracks are notable for their immense dreaminess. If you've never taken a trip into Weber's warming world before, The Triad offers the perfect introduction.

The label has been an inspiration to many, and producers such as DJ Sotofett have taken its model as a blueprint for their own labels, ones that bring together several different artists and ideas onto one 12". For this one, Claussel is joined by Mental Remedy and "I Pray No More", a guitar-led, mid-tempo house chugger, followed by the deeper than deep "Wail Of The Heart" by Unchained Rhythms. The man appears with a version of "Most Beautiful" by Elements Of Life on the flipside, a bouncy, happy house nugget, while Bolla Afrikan Basement Bo Bo A offer an intricate bundle of percussion on "Drumistic".

Review: Life & Death's head honcho DJ Tennis serves up some brooding, pop inflected deep house for main room madness on "Divisions" featuring the rich vocals of Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish pop-tronica trio Whomadewho; expect to be hearing a lot of this one this year! We've also the more straight ahead, dark melodic journey track executed in the way that only a Life & Death record can be on "Chirality" featuring some intense atmosphere provided by Sophie Trudeau's (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) string orchestra direction. "Divisions" gets an equally dark and mysterious remix, full of rich synth leads and bleepiness by Frankfurt master Roman Flugel and "Chirality" gets an epic makeover by experimental electronica legends Plaid, which is equally worthy of your attention.

Nothing is known about Senor M but here's what we can confirm: "Carbo" is the ultimate beach tune with its soft ebb and flow chords, lazy, slouching breakbeat and precision crafted Japanese sample. "Time" is just a tiny bit more upbeat with its sun-kissed dub vibe and sweeping nod to a long sought after classic. We waste time spoiling the surprise...

Review: Having previously impressed on Argot and Home Taping Is Killing Music with her blends of evocative deep house and floor-friendly Chicago rhythms, The Black Madonna tries a different approach on this debut for the recently launched Night Owl Diner label. You could certainly describe both tracks as "Balearic", and there's a real air of wide-eyed positivity about the tumbling melodies, swirling synth-strings and mid-80s pop production of head-nodding deep house cut "Stay". It's pretty darn tasty, all told. Almost as good is "Requiem", which appears to be built around a loop lifted from Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal's "Saturday Love" (with, of course, additional synths and tuneful electronics).

Review: For those that don't know, Ex:El was the third LP by British electronic pioneers 808 State released in 1991. The album features guest vocalists such as New Order's Bernard Sumner on "Spanish Heart' and Bjork on "Qmart" and "Ooops" which would result in the Icelandic singer having a continued working relationship with Graham Massey over the years. Their teaming up with figures of the alternative music scene of the time started a trend that many other electronic music groups would become to follow. Perceived by many to be one of their finest albums, this one will be a welcome edition to any 808 State fans collection on vinyl.

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

Review: Icelandic classical, experimental and soundtrack composer Olafur Arnalds steps away from the loops and Broadchurch OSTs to conjure yet another sublime LNT saga. Carefully balancing between contemporary odysseys ("Jomsvikingarimur"), dense futuristic electronic weaves ("Last Remnants"), fuzzy 22nd century pop ("A Noise") sludgy cosmic funk ("Jasmine") and introspective soul ("Our Love Comes Back"), Olafur blows wave after woozy wave of soft sonic conjurations in a way that's broad, detailed and cleverly considered. Good night.

Review: Long-time co-conspirators Lee Forster and James Hadfield build on their entrance serenade Not An Animal earlier this year with two more delicious Claremont-sized slabs of sparkling Balearica. "Frontier" is a real sunlight-breaking-through-the-clouds track with its crisp guitar strums cutting through the heaviest of clouds, toeing a line of sedate-but-strong instrumentation behind it. "Coming In" runs a housier code with its additional layers of darker synths and more dominance on the lolloping drums. Highly versatile.

Review: The experimental partnership between Mark E and Stuart Hobbs (who met and hatched this plan, as Leng legend would have it, at the school gates waiting for their daughters to come out of class), Quarry Hallow is an exercise in vintage kit and straight up formula-free cosmic jamming. Only savouring the first takes, when the ideas are still fresh and rough and exciting, this is the result; a fuzzy, free-spirited, collection of psychedelic jams that meander and stroll unhurried and unlimited from the Amazonian synth pads of "The Path Of Tranquility" to the luscious swoons of "Long Slide". Let's hope there are plenty more to come.

Review: The Magic Forest dwelling record collectors better known as Psychemagik return to Claremont56 offshoot Leng with a new compilation Magik Sunrise which is essentially a vinyl shaped sequel to last year's well received Magik Cyrkles. Though equally well presented as that compilation, Psychemagik refreshingly adopt a different sonic direction here, trading in the obscure Balearica and funk in favour of a wonderfully enlightening blend of African reggae, jazz-funk, prog rock, folk and New Age curios. Think David Holmes classic Essential Mix then crank up the weird factor to eleven and you'll have a good idea of what to expect from this fifteen track selection. The sensual twilight boogie of "The Juggler" by Fox is a particular highlight.

Review: When Juno Plus spoke to Emotional Response boss Stuart Leath recently, he talked excitedly about his latest time intensive project - trawling through boxes of old cassette recordings from L.A multi-instrumentalist Eddie "Secret Circuit" Ruscha to compile a follow-up to 2012's brilliant Tropical Psychedelics compilation. Predictably, the resulting collection is nothing short of brilliant. Typically eccentric, melodious, atmospheric and bristling with interesting ideas, Cosmic Vibrations delves deeper into Ruscha's archives and comes up with gold. Highlights are naturally plentiful, but keep an eye out for the psychedelic ambience of "Electric Brain", the analogue electronic explorations of "Nova Laser", and "Shockers", an acid-flecked chunk of chiming Balearic deep house with exotic, Arabic touches.

Review: Having introduced Gigi Masin to a wider audience via the brilliant Talk To The Sea compilation back in 2014, Music From Memory is now attempting to do the same with Suso Saiz. Like Masin, Saiz was a new age/ambient pioneer in his country (in this case, Spain), releasing a smattering of obscure solo albums between 1984 and the present day. The material on Odisea - dreamy, stripped-back, evocative, occasionally breezy and largely built around vintage synthesizers and his own, Steve Hillage-like guitar work - is taken from those albums, as well as an obscure cassette-only release. As usual, the Amsterdam diggers have also included a number of previously unreleased tracks, drawn from the musician's extensive archives. It all ads up to another must have compilation from Europe's premier Balearic archivists.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!

Review: New alias for Richard Gateaux (Aka Phoreski) dropping two essential jams for the Soft Rocks boys on their Kinfolk imprint. 'This Devil Can Dance' is a scary anthemic electronic dance monster from the left that will slay many a dance floor this year and has legend written all over it. Add to the mix the downtempo delight 'Lone Soldier Theme' that takes a different electronic route with it's echoes of 'Assault On Precinct 13' / 'Escape From New York' filmic vibe this makes for an essential package.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Little do people know that Coober Pedy is an opal rich town buried deep within the red and arid outback of South Australia. Lewie Day (aka Tornado Wallace) and Tom Moore may be from Melbourne, but the duo make up the Coober Pedy University Band, coining the term "Krautback" to describe this Moon Plain EP. Drawing upon italo synths and mid-tempo Balearica as inspiration, the first release comes in 12" form via Soft Rocks' Kinfolk label. The reverb washed Australian crooner Chet Faker appears on the title track "Moon Plain" alongside heavy struck piano chords, while "Sentenced Beyond The Seas" is a flow of groggy atmospheres and downtempo beats. "Oblong" is the the EPs stand out italo track with short bass arpeggios a highlight, while Soft Rocks "Acperience" mix of "Moon Plain" takes on an acidic and space western theme.

Review: Ghostly International has picked up a lot as of late, and it's high time that this excellent label started to bring us new and exciting talent again. Here we have Com Truise - Tom Cruise's alias when he hangs around the scientology meets (just kidding!) - and five masterful slices of synth-heavy dance music. "Sunspot" is a delicate scorcher boasting a beautiful pattern of melodies, "Forgive" goes for the new age look and feel, "Diffraction" sits somewhere between disco and balearic, the title track "Silicon Tare" is the kind of beat-heavy tune you'd be listening to on a beach in LA, and "Du Zirconia" stutters its beats over a grainy bassline that recalls 1980's boogie. Sick.
