Reflexivity (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PS 003 . Rel: 30 Jan 17
  1. Anvil Landing (6:29)
  2. Snorkel (7:20)
  3. Kabutops (Mascaras remix) (7:15)
  4. Reflexivity (5:45)
Review: "Power Station continue to present their penchant for dark dance club sounds as the third edition of the Kris Baha-led imprint looks to another Melbourne local by way of Lochlan Denholm aka Disrute.
After surfacing on the labels sampler debut just last year, 'Reflexivity' sees Lochlan a chance to explore his style of twisted, pulsing homage to new wave and motorik throb. 'Anvil Landing' wastes no time laying down intentions. Sparse friendly drums are met with a modulating bass line and lazy arpeggio, an incessant sonar pulses and drum rolls intensify. 'Snorkel' continues the mid-tempo intensity, Distressed kick counterpoint with aggressive stabs that rise and swirl before reaching a powerful climax, a track reminiscent of the 2000's turbo-charged italo disco edits.
On the flip we see Japanese supergroup Mascaras, made up of Chida and 5ive (Cos/Mes) tackle unreleased 'Kabutops'. Vocal fans of Disrute's 'Kabu' track from the label sampler, here Mascaras provide a fast paced acid-heavy reinterpretation, intense yet restrained with erratic drum trickery taking Disrute to techno territory. Finally, Disrute reflects with title track 'Reflexivity'. Digital arpeggios and a brooding one note bass work around Curt Cress style harmonic drums, a low slung piece for the early evening. Hand drawn picture sleeve and label, a complete package that signals exciting times for Power Station ahead."

Eyes Of Glass (reissue) (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 144. Rel: 30 Jan 17
  1. Eyes Of Glass (vocal) (6:55)
  2. Eyes Of Glass (instrumental) (7:13)
Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

  1. Hey Benji (5:52)
  2. Hey Benji (Prins Thomas remix) (10:10)
Review: Although it is not really their debut, GT003 unveils a new stage for the Sao Paulo collective and its eponymous label on their global endeavours, be it for the chosen source of material they offer or for the regal remixer recruited to enhance its flavours: Discosmic royalty Prins Thomas.
Delving into the grooves we find ourselves amidst rhythms that rely heavily on the hypnotic power of an infectious bassline, powered by some greasy fingering responsible for the type of gravy that makes Brazilian cuisine world renowned. The flip is served by your Balearic Highness, designing one of his mind-bending journeys by turning the original flavours into a dense compound of molten polyrhythms and worldly spices.
An earful of delights for anyone fairly interested in sensorial expansion with high concentration of musical content, what can easily be found when such diversity is sought after, as has been Gop Tun's mission throughout.

  4. Sfire 3 (Willie Burns remix 2) (4:11)
Review: Hot on the heels of the co-release between Especial and Cocktails d'Amore Music of the Sfire Remixes EP (EES023/CDA013) comes an accompanying release with a pair of deeper, stripped back remixes from the inimitable Timothy J Fairplay and Willie Burns.

Well known as producers, DJs and label managers with their Crimes Of The Future and WT Records respectively, as well as appearing on a who's who of electronic labels
including Pinkman, Unknown To The Unknown and L.I.E.S, they have appeared in various guises on both Emotional Response and Especial.

Here then are 4 remixes - 2 each per side - that take the unique original to new dance floor extremes. Timothy steps up first with his take on Sfire 2 via differing vocal and instrumental versions. His trademark, echo laden rolling percussion and "Carpenter" key lines take the original Synth-pop homage to the dark room. Adding Arps, a lifting, hedonistic breakdown and the scatter-stepper drums and claps found on the Instrumental version and this is pure COTF territory and the better for it.

Willie meanwhile has long followed his own path for his take on Sfire 3, offering one of his deepest remixes to date. Thudding kick, brooding pads and dark strings force the vocals to go down, way down for examination. The distorted vocals of Remix 1 are countered by Remix 2 letting the track shine via a seemingly endless 4/4 beat. Psychedelic, trance inducing, pulsating, this is an ever growing mind expanse.

Presented in sparse Hand Stamped sleeves, this one off Limited Edition pressing is a unique EP, taking Sfire to a different sphere that warrants investigation. It was only

Review: Amsterdam label Music from Memory are steadily becoming the most interesting archivally minded operation out there, with this retrospective of Mallorcan guitarist Joan Bibiloni following essential issues of work by Gigi Masin and Leon Lowman. On El Sur, MFM founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller cast their gaze over Bibiloni's work from the more experimental era of his long career (he first released a single in 1967) selecting tracks from a six album run which commenced with the album Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila, originally released in 1984. It was during this time that Bibiloni began to compose with the assistance of tape loops, drum computers and synthesisers and these primitive experiments make for compelling listening across the ten tracks on El Sur.
