  8. Bill Deal - "Freak N Freeze" (4:12)
Review: Dekmantel's new Selectors compilation series and festival was apparently designed to celebrate those DJs who not only know how to work a dancefloor, but also dig deep for inspiration. First to showcase his dusty-fingered credentials is Danilo 'MCDE' Plessow, who's used the opportunity to gather together some of his favourite, hard-to-find house, disco and jazz-funk cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the breezy soulfulness of Dj Slym Fas's 1997 gem "Luv Music" and Risque III's early Chicago deep house killer "Essence Of A Dream", to the ludicrously expensive jazz-funk-meets-disco-boogie brilliance of Licky's 1979 obscurity "African Rock". It's a cliche to describe a compilation as containing "all killers" and "no fillers", but in this instance it's an accurate assessment.

Review: Press reviews of Henning Severud's long-awaited debut album have been universally positive, and it's easy to see why. While the Norwegian touches on numerous styles across Vibe Telemetry - new age, ambient house, Scandolearic, Italo-disco, vintage Italian deep house and even saucer-eyed techno - each have been filtered through his hazy, hard-to-define desire to create music with its' own distinctive sense of atmosphere. As a result, it's a hugely vibrant, colourful and inventive set, with Severud effortlessly creating a set of tracks that works as a coherent, easy to listen to whole, despite the presence of numerous future floor-fillers. As debut albums go, it's something of a cracker.

  4. Southend Pier (5:34)
Review: Melbourne producer Hysteric is becoming a go-to man for those looking for killer re-edits of obscure, left-of-centre Italo-disco and synth-pop oddities. Here he serves up a fresh batch of reworked gems for new label Fuego International, following inspired outings on Bordello A Parigi and Public Possession. The title track is a steamy, exotic Italo-disco gem blessed with electrofunk flourishes and AOR disco guitars, while "Discotheek De Marathon" is a throbbing, synth-heavy chugger that makes great use of extended drum solos and synthesized cowbells. Flip for the sweet, Afro-Italo fusion of "Pescara Beach", and the pitched down, electro-influenced new wave shuffle of "Southend Pier".

  1. Don't Change Your Way (8:57)
  2. Blood (feat Huw Costin) (7:05)
  3. Up For Air (7:16)
  4. Tears (7:09)
Review: The Old Euphonium marks a welcome return for Jim Baron (Crazy P, Ron Basejam etc) and Benjamin J Smith's occasional collaborative project, White Elephant. They begin with the smoky blue-eyed soul shuffle of "Don't Change Your Way", where brilliant piano parts and dubbed-out vocals stretch out over an organic groove, before inviting Manatee member Huw Costin to add his impassioned vocals to the AOR disco-goes-Balearic vibes of "Blood". On the B-side, you'll find the hushed, sun-kissed grooves of "Up For Air", and the glistening, sun-brought adult contemporary pop of "Tears". It's arguably the strongest moment on a pleasingly solid E.P.

Gazel EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FW 002. Rel: 24 Oct 16
  1. Mehmet Aslan & Dario Rohrbach - "Gazel"
  2. Alma Negra - "In The Beginning"
Review: With his star most definitely in ascendance, Mehmet Aslan brings his Turkish tones to his own Fleeting Wax label with some assistance from Dario Rohrbach on the anthemic, big room burner "Gazel". It's the kind of dramatic twist on house music that will inspire a fevered reaction from the floor, respectfully channeling exotic tropes while retaining a necessary functionality. Meanwhile Rohrbach's collaborative project Alma Negra resides on the B-side with the more delicate, North African simmer of "In The Beginning", tapping into the tradition of transcendental music in an engrossing fashion. Both sides represent the thrill to be found in crossing over ethnic music with Western club tropes.

  1. Love Is Enough (Richard Sen remix)
  2. Love Is Enough (Khidja remix)
  3. Love Is Enough (Luke Solomon remix)
  4. Love Is Enough (Jamie Paton remix)
Review: Originally operating in the 80s industrial scene, Plus Instruments have recently found a new lease of life. (Emotional) Especial are just the kind of label to jump on such deviant club fare, and on this package "Love Is Enough" gets a variety of remixes that all embrace the groups seedy ambience. Richard Sen brings a muscular thrust to the track, while Khidja takes a more delicate approach. Luke Solomon meanwhile casts his years of experience in oddball house on his steady grooving version, and then Jamie Paton taps into the industrial vein to finish the package off in fine style.

Cat: PD 12002. Rel: 24 Oct 16
  1. Muscle Groove (12" Muscle version) (7:17)
  2. String Groove (7:18)
Review: Little is known about the origins of the Powerdance label, or the crew of "like-minded dance music enthusiasts" behind it. What we can say, though, is that their eponymous debut 12", released in August 2016, was something of a scorcher. This timely follow-up, containing two new studio productions, is equally as inspired. A-side "Muscle Groove" is deliciously muscular, with the mystery production outfit blending elements of Italo-disco, Hi-NRG, proto-house and string-drenched New York disco. Flip for "String Groove", where delay-laden drums and a sneaky sample from Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt" fire a rubbery, tops-off disco stomper. They've got the power, alright.

Cat: MOD 005. Rel: 24 Oct 16
  1. Machina 1.1 (3:50)
  2. Machina 1.2 (4:08)
Review: With a discography stretching back to the mid-noughties, the Revolving Eyes have been paying tribute to EBM, new beat and minimal wave long before it was fashionable to do so. It's perhaps for this reason that Ex Machina, their first single since 2007, is so hotly anticipated. The genius of both "Machina 1.1" and "Machina 1.2" lies in the Belgian duo's ability to combine authentic synthesizer and drum machine sounds, with both classic '80s alternative tropes and the hypnotic, booty-shaking fluidity of acid house. This is particularly evident on the deliciously wonky, mind-altering pump of flipside "Machina 1.2", where bubbly electronics and tweaked acid lines ride a no-nonsense drum machine groove.

  3. In The Rain (VA edit) (4:45)
Review: Following up that awesome 12'' heart-shaped red vinyl that was the first volume, Greece's VinylAddicted (Editor's Kutz/Diggin' Disco Deep) serves up Volume 2 of the series, including two edits by VinylAddicted himself on what he describes personally as 'ridiculously difficult to find covers' plus a beloved collaboration of him with one Jean Claude Gavri. This time around it's pressed on 10'' pink vinyl and limited down to 300 copies. There's a great version of "2 Good 2 Be True (VA edit)" but Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons it certainly 'aint! On the flip is a great edit of Nicolette Larson's 1978 hit "Lotta Love".
