  3. D Quelle (11:25)
Review: Vintage hardware enthusiast Bezier doesn't release much, but what he does deliver is invariably excellent. This outing on Honey Soundsystem follows similarly inclined outings on Dark Entries and HNTTRX, all of which impressed with their far-sighted feel and sparkling synthesizer motifs. Cosmologist heads straight for the jugular, with "Cosmos" delivering a delicious blend of Italo-disco style arpeggios, Euro-disco melody lines, and occasional blasts of eight-bit electronics. Flip for the skittish, proto-house influenced drums, moody horror chords and proto-techno electronics of "Ether", and the deep, melodious and attractive instrumental synth-pop of EP closer "D Quelle".

  1. Dial Theory (Tony's Slice) (10:03)
  2. Dial Theory (Case Study #9) (new mix) (7:23)
Review: Mark E turns over duties on the latest E-Versions 12" to one of his most celebrated and respected namesakes, Mr Mark Seven! Fans of the Parkway Megamix from Mark Seven should be eminently familiar with "Dial Theory (Tony's Slice)", which is where Mark E first heard it. "A lot of telephone conversations, a lot of pleading, digging, sweat and tears" later and Parkway's Mark revealed to MERC's Mark it was an attempt to recreate a live mix by Tony Humphries he heard on Kiss cutting 2 copies of the phone conversation back and forward forever. All this talking has led to the track featuring here, a serious edit from MKVII indeed! The flipside acid cut, "Case Study 9" is just as potent too!

Review: Moscoman's increasingly influential Disco Halal label have outdone themselves once more on this latest release, an official reissue of the highly sought-after self-titled TCP album. Standing for Tony Carey Project, this 13-track LP originally saw the light of day on the classic X Records back in 1984 and laid down a marker for the sound the former Rainbow keys man would go on to explore as Yellow Power and Planet P. If you are a fan of the DJ mixes of Lena Willikens or Red Axes you really need to invest some time in this TCP album which set the groundwork for the electronic music we know today. Shouts to Disco Halal for getting Tony Carey to supply some killer sleeve notes too! Reissue of the week!

Stay (12" repress)
Cat: DINER 002. Rel: 04 Jul 16
  1. Stay
  2. Venus Requiem
Review: Having previously impressed on Argot and Home Taping Is Killing Music with her blends of evocative deep house and floor-friendly Chicago rhythms, The Black Madonna tries a different approach on this debut for the recently launched Night Owl Diner label. You could certainly describe both tracks as "Balearic", and there's a real air of wide-eyed positivity about the tumbling melodies, swirling synth-strings and mid-80s pop production of head-nodding deep house cut "Stay". It's pretty darn tasty, all told. Almost as good is "Requiem", which appears to be built around a loop lifted from Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal's "Saturday Love" (with, of course, additional synths and tuneful electronics).

Review: Hot Pot hot property, Lafleur's near-legendary inaugural edit volume gets the reissue we've all been dreaming of. Three five-star disco funk edits, curated and spliced with care: The Undisputed Truth enjoy a glittering house twist, Herp Albert's "Rise" gets a toxic boogie shakedown while Jose James experiences a luxurious come-to-bed massage. Grab this while you can.

Film Noir (12")
Cat: CORRESPONDANT 47. Rel: 04 Jul 16
  1. Film Noir (5:39)
  2. Ooey (6:43)
Review: Jennifer Cardini sure has done a great job of curating Correspondant over the years. Eclectic as the label's output may be, she sure has an ear for retro-ish sounds, particularly EBM-ish and electro-clashy sounds of late as heard by the likes of Borusiade and Squarewave. After encouraging the comeback of another electroclash legend in the form of The Hacker she now presents one of electroclash's most foremost proponents in the legendary Vitalic. The Frenchman presents two servings of grinding and steely analogue machine music. On the A side is the haunting "Film Noir" with its layers of rich synth leads and pounding vintage drums sounding like John Carpenter goes disco. On the flip "Ooey" is a more upbeat and groovy offering with its infectious vocal hook and chunky arpeggio leading the track towards dancefloor oblivion.

Review: The stripes of selector cognoscenti and soul documentarian Greg Belson are as strong as the vibes on this compilation for the Cultures of Soul label. Covering a ten year period, the snappily-titled Greg Belson's Divine Disco: American Gospel Disco 1974-1984 digs deep from a mine of labels such as Intro, Mopres and Savoy for a fifteen-track selection where raw faith is laid down over a salubrious spread of grooves. Big blues band (Gospel Ambassadors), smooth early '80s boogie soul (Enlightenment) Skyy style sweatiness (Gloria Griffin) or Joubert Singers power (Herman Harris) are all covered with precision crate curation. Our blessing to you Greg Belson and Cultures of Soul.

Review: From the label: "This EP is a dedication to the Amsterdam based Alkebulan Project. Philou and Villy are both members of this project, the project brings artists from Africa & African Diaspora together. The Alkebulan Project is on a mission to change the perception of Africa an it's citizens. Nigerian artist Villy and his group "Villy & The Xtreme Volumes" are on a mission to educate Africans with their message calling for a revolution in Africa, politically and socially in all aspects. Philou has a combination of Congolese, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage and it is in these roots that he has built his sound. His passion for the continent of his ancestors is fervent and his projects are challenging commonly held preconceptions about Africa. His goal is to challenge negative stereotypes, by making African cultures more approachable through music. Much love for Rudy Asibey for founding The Alkebulan Project and bringing the artists together and many thanks to Marcel Vogel for giving us the opportunity to tell our story through."
