Scrimshire Edits (limited hand-stamped 7")
Cat: DP 017. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Gi's Tata (re-edit) (4:22)
  2. Mo's Delight (re-edit) (4:26)
Review: Wah Wah co-bossman Scrimshire is banging out the edits this year. Real edits, too. Not just extensions or polishes but complete reworks that pay respect to the originals and bring our focus to the magic of the elements. "Gi's Tata" takes us back to Brazil 1975 as Giovana's "Tatarue" is given the four-to-the-floor stomp it deserves with full attention placed on the salubrious slap bass. Flip for an equally delightful homage to "Rapper's Delight" by skat-singer Morris Wilson. Driven by a light summery house beat, the drop guarantees knowing and appreciative looks as an over-played cliche suddenly gets a whole new lease of life. Make no mistakes, Scrimshire is on fire this year.

I Saw You (7")
Cat: ATH 033. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. I Saw You
  2. Heaven's Love
Review: Fizzy boogie from Minneapolis circa 1982; Nobody cut through with a raw, energetic sound and countered with soothing, evocative soul that shimmers with their gospel roots. "I Saw You" sits somewhere between Prince and Rick James but polished with super freaky female front vocals, it's wholly unique and backs up the first pressing's pricetag of $500. "Heaven's Love" is the perfect counter with its emphatic harmonies and stately instrumentation. A serious timepiece from AOTN.

  3. Tatyana Kochergina - "Igray Skripka Igray" (DJ Scientist edit) (6:53)
Review: The love of all things Soviet and disco has been established by French/German duo Fulgeance and Scientist for several years now, having reached a peak last year with their album The Soviet Tape on First Word. Now they return with their own edit series on brand new label Excursions. With eyes squared fully on the floor, each obscurity is given some serious groove muscle for the floor... Charaunitsy's soulful croons and yearning horns are given an additional kick/snare swing, Latvia's Mirdza gets a deliciously camp turbo charge while Ukraine's Tatyana Kochergina gets a full-on Philly treatment with lavish strings and a bassline that won't say nyet.

  3. Alpine (Prins Thomas Short Yoga Break version) (4:28)
Review: Given his recent foray into the world of epic, undulating ambience - see the fine Principe Del Norte full-length on Smalltown Supersound - we can't think of anyone better than Prins Thomas to remix Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann's "Alpine" single. The eccentric Norwegian goes in hard on the A-side, delivering a near 12-minute "Diskomiks" that effortlessly joins the dots between The Orb's meandering ambience and his own particular brand of loose, percussive Scandolearic disco. Flip to the B-side for the "Simpler Tool For DJ Fools" - seven minutes of rolling grooves, classic ambient house bass and fluid electronics - and the blissful, mountaintop ambience of the "Short Yoga Break version".

  3. Together Beats (5:46)
  4. Something To Believe (6:07)
Review: Hometaping Is Killing Music, the Scottish imprint devoted to the underground, is back this time with Italian young gun Nicholas on the Bonus Beats 1 EP. Things kick off with "Hot Nights" which offers as deadly a sample usage of Minnie Ripperton as the Linkwood classic "R.I.P.". Also on the A side is "Atmo" featuring Paul Cut; more deep and soulful funk grooves for fans of KDJ style jams. On the flip we've got the pumping percussive DJ tool "Together (Beats)" which is a welcome addition to any serious DJs arsenal and finally "Something To Believe" which gets back on the soul train in delightful '70s retrovert fashion.

  5. Prazctok Memoriam (1:23)
Review: Following five years of label surfing - including full-length excursions for Running Back and Permanent Vacation - Phillip Lauer returns to Live At Robert Johnson. Happily, "Tearsh" sees the German producer at his melodious, life-enhancing best, with the title track sounding like a giddily loved-up fusion of the Pet Shop Boys, Balearic disco, and super soft-touch deep house. The sun-kissed, Mediterranean mood is explored further on "Antinat", and the Italo-influenced dancefloor cheeriness of "Jetdentist". Arguably best of all, though, is "Deass", a thrilling combination of heavy, proto-house percussion and sparse, late night synth lines.

Afoxe (limited 10")
Cat: BB 02. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Selvagem & Kiko Costato - "Afoxe" (5:13)
  2. Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco - "Coconuts For Breakfast" (7:42)
Review: Barefoot Beats' formula is simple: hand pick some lesser-known Brazilian gems, and then re-edit them in a way that suits modern dancefloors. The sneaky imprint's second release features a pair of collaborative reworks from Selvagem and Kiko Coastato, and Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco. The former pairing's "Afoxe" is something of a slow-building treat, with delay-laden, chanted vocals riding a shuffling, samba-disco groove. Old pals Herbert and Trisco reach for the button marked "beach party", underpinning their breezy "Coconuts For Breakfast" with a solid, house-friendly kick-drum pattern and brilliant bassline. Both tracks sound like the kind of thing that should be played loudly in the summer sunshine.

Cat: SS 11. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Track 1 (5:41)
  2. Track 2 (5:43)
Review: Heads down as the mysterious Secret Squirrels series returns for an eleventh outing. As usual, they're keeping quiet about the identity of both the source material and the editor (or editors) involved. "Track 1" is something of a proto-house treat, with Fairlight style stabs, bongo hits, and spine tingling piano motifs - accompanied by just the right amount of delay - holding court over a killer electronic bassline. Flip for "Track 2", where more extensive piano solos and riffs do their thing over a post-Italo disco, early house groove. If Giorgio Moroder and Frankie Knuckles had ever got together to make a record, it would sound like this.

  2. Francisco - "Get It" (8:09)
  3. Francisco & Cosmo - "System 3" (Delphi bonus beat) (4:51)
Review: Francisco De Bellis has forged a long career out of formulating his own particular brand of hardware-heavy electronic disco, casually blurring the boundaries between Italo, Chicago house, and the head-in-the-clouds shuffle of cosmic disco. He's at it again on the third installment of the ongoing Lineabeat series. Regular collaborator Cosimo 'Cosmo' Mandorino lends a hand on atmospheric opener "System 3", which chugs away on a wave of soft-touch machine drums, moody new wave guitars, and bubbly electronics. "Get It" sees De Bellis raise the tempo - and temperature - via stabbing vocal samples, Chicago bass, and densely layered, sweat-infused drum machine percussion. There's more 'jack' to be found on Delphi's restless, 'bonus beat' version of "System 3".

  1. Linea Verde (7:04)
  2. Linda's Body (4:45)
  3. Joe (5:47)
Review: As the title suggests, Beppe Loda's Obscure Cuts series shines a light on little-known, or long-forgotten Italian electronic tracks, with the cosmic disco great on re-editing duties. While previous installments have touched on various forms of cosmic disco (including those heavily influenced by rock, psychedelia and the Middle East), volume three focuses on Italo-disco and proto-house. First up is "Linea Verde", where ear-catching melodies tumble down over a rock-hard synthesizer arpeggio and restless drum machine hits. "Linda's Body" is deliciously sleazy, spacey and druggy, with Loda utilizing filters to emphasize the action, while "Joe" sees him apply sun-cream to a cracking piece of Italo-disco/funk rock fusion.

They signed for the legendary “House Of Music” Italian label but this Album never saw the light (due also for the short life of the label). UM:BROS put togheter elecronic, new wave and italo-disco in a modern and updated style!
