Obsession (12")
Cat: TV 1209. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Obsession (Steven Stanley & Francois Kevorkian Nassau mix)
  2. Obsession (Godwin Logie & Herve Le Coz London mix)
Review: In recent years, Guy Cuevas' 1982 12", Obsession, has become something of an in-demand item amongst Balearic diggers and post-disco collectors. Given the eye-watering online prices for original copies, it would be fair to say that this reissue is more than welcome. Like the Paris-based Cuban's original '82 12", this edition boasts two contrasting mixes. On the A-side, you'll find the loose, languid and groovy "Nassau Mix", a sun-kissed fusion of leisurely boogie grooves and chanted Cuban vocals. On the flip you'll find the horn-heavy "London Mix", which breaks out into an extended Latin percussion jam midway through. Naturally, both mixes are superb.

Synthetic Substitution (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 001. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Melvin Bliss - "Syntheic Substitution" (extended Break edit) (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (extended Break edit) (4:17)
Review: This tasty, DJ-friendly 7" single boasts two extended, break-heavy reworks of obscure and in-demand soul workouts. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era". Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.

  4. Made In The Shade
  5. Washed Up

  7. Night Boat
  8. Ruby Star
Review: It's been well over a decade since Pete Herbert last released an album. On that occasion, he was collaborating with Phil Mison, as Frontera. This tine round, Herbert has been joined in the studio by keyboard wizard Martin Denev. Made in the Shade naturally encapsulates all that's good about both producers' work - think colourful synthesizers, loved-up pianos, dreamy chords, rich analogue synth-bass, Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, disco cowbells and an saucer-eyed Balearic mindset - while delivering a string of superb, sun-fired tracks. Highlights come thick and fast, from the classic Italo-house surge of "Washed Up" and T-Coy-does-nu-disco cheeriness of "Night Boat", to the soul-flecked tingle of Robert Owens hook-up "Pass Me By" and groovy, acid-flecked deepness of proto-house shuffler "Time".

Nothing Fancy EP (12" repress)
Cat: QD 03. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Lets Go All The Way (6:05)
  2. Just Be Yourself (10:08)
Review: Derry boys Queen & Disco return for a third outing on their eponymous label, serving up two gently straightened out edits tweaked for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find the rising strings, rich orchestration and celebratory vocals of "Let's Go All The Way", a guitar solo-laden disco bumper tailor made for party-starting fun. Arguably even better is "Just Be Yourself", a high-octane disco thumper that's a little more loopy and house-friendly in construction. It sits somewhere between the thumping loop jams of Soundstream, the riotously camp thrust of Sylvester, and the "drum machine added" edit thrills of Boogie Cafe boss man Jimmy The Twin.

Fleetmac Wood (12" repress)
Cat: FMW 001. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Psychemagik - "Dreams" (Crystal Visions remix) (9:23)
  2. Red Ken - "Big Love" (Big Four Letter Word mix) (6:17)
Review: Psychemagik love Fleetwood Mac. Their love is so enduring that the dusty fingered editors/DJs/revered record collectors have gone so far as to found Fleetmac Wood, a club night dedicated to the work of Fleetwood, Nicks, McVie and the various other manifestations, where anything goes so long as it's Fleetwood Mac related. Their remix of "Dreams" has been getting playtime at the night - and by other well regarded DJs - and finally makes an appearance on this limited 12". What's immediately noticeable about the Crystal Visions Remix of "Dreams" is how much they add to the track without messing with the original's essence - it's also a lot more inventive than Psychemagik's 2009 edit of "Everywhere" which shows how far they've come in three years. Flip over for a great extension of Juno's favourite Mac moment "Big Love" from AOR Disco's Red Ken.

  2. Letting It Rest (extended mix) (6:09)
Review: Frank Murillo was born in New York City and still lives and works there as a musician, producer and teacher. The multi-instrumentalist mentions Queen, David Bowie and Santana as his biggest musical influences."Letting It Rest" was originally released in 1986 on the New York based Chapter 13 label. Murillo played all the instruments and sung on this killer leftfield disco/boogie cut with a heavy Italo feel. So, it's with great pleasure that Ostra Discos presents the reissue of this awesome track.

Cat: GAMM 111. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Blessin' (11:24)
  2. Whole Lotta Love (Back To The Box edit) (14:10)
Review: Chicagoan DJ/producer Jamie 3:26 has long been regarded as one of the edit scene's brightest talents, with fine outings on Local Talk and Lumberjacks in Hell only enhancing his credentials. Happily, this two-tracker on G.A.M.M could well be his strongest release to date. A-side "Blessing" is a brilliantly teased-out revision of a stomping disco-soul anthem, which rises, falls and rises again magnificently over 12 mesmerizing minutes. Arguably even better, though, is his Ron Hardy inspired rework of a well-known Italo-disco cover version of Led Zepellin's "Whole Lotta Love". The Chicagoan expertly works the track hard for nearly 15 minutes, alternating between sleazy vocal passages and the throbbing, sleazy instrumentation.

Never Wanna Lose You (12" repress)
Cat: TTYLTD 002. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Never Wanna Lose You (5:52)
  2. Got Me (7:03)
Review: The latest Ten Thousand Yen release is a vinyl only affair from label founder Doc Daneeka that has summer on its mind and certainly sounds like it was a hoot to produce. Samples abound across the two tracks, with "Never Wanna Lose You" standing out for the manner in which Daneeka gleefully toys around with classic breakbeats and freestyle vocal hooks, squeezing in plenty of loops and filters along the way. One for the drunken, messy moments deep into a night in a basement. On the flip "Got Me" is as good a slice of disco-infused house music as you'd expect from a Soundstream record. Great fun.

Review: Cosmo Vitelli's tres chic I'm a Cliche provides serves up the third chapter in its Edit Service Special Delivery. This new 12" features four edits from Moscow DJ and producer Grisha Nelyubin (who is also part of the Odopt project) under his new moniker Blind Rape. Using everything from percussive Brazilian obscurities, lost French tapes from the '80s ("Broghunt") ("Safety Instructions") to ex-Yugoslavian EBM ("Decorum") or early 70s heavy krautrock ("Long Journey To Liman"), Nelyubin delivers four powerful dancefloor friendly edits which already show a very personal touch.

  10. Pasteur Lappe - "Sekele Movement"
  11. Pat' Ndoye - "More Love"
  12. Clement Djimogne - "Africa"
Review: Just when you think that the well of obscure music from around the world has run dry, Analog Africa returns to put the record straight. Pop-Makossa shines a light on a glorious but largely overlooked period in the story of Cameroonian makossa, when local musicians began to replace funk and highlife influences with the rubbery bass of classic disco and the sparkling synth flourishes and drum machines of electrofunk. The resultant compilation, which apparently took eight years to produce, is packed full of brilliant cuts, from the heavily-electronic jauntiness of Pasteur Lappe's "Sanaga Calypso" and horn-totin' Highlife-disco of Emmaniel Kahe and Jeanette Kemogne's "Ye Medjuie", to the dense, organ-laden wig out that is Clement Djimogne's "Africa".

  1. For Francoise (7:41)
  2. Don't Hold Back (6:10)
  3. Heavy Rotation (6:39)
  4. Sacrifice (7:27)
Review: This tasty 12" marks the vinyl debut of HDSN, a producer who first pricked our consciousness last year via a digital-only EP of soulful and deep house bombs on King Street Sounds. This four-tracker is a little more disco-centric in tone, with the producer combining samples from a wealth of classic and lesser-known 1970s anthems with his own beefy basslines and skipping house percussion. It's an undeniably summery and floor-friendly affair from start to finish, with highlights including the breezy, filter-sporting thrills of "Don't Hold Back", which includes a killer breakbeat breakdown and colossal drop midway through, the Soundstream-ish disco-house heaviness of string-laden killer "Heavy Rotation" and the deeper, richer goodness of closer "Sacrifice".

  1. Apocalypse
  2. Electronix
  3. Firedance
  4. Stardriver
Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

  3. I Let Go (feat Love Child) (4:09)
  4. Livin' It Up (feat Jackie Rain) (3:46)
Review: Level up! Analogue funkers Martin Arceneaux and Chris Arenas make their debut on the ever-rising beat bum haven Hobo Camp. As with their previous workouts on the likes of Austin Boogie Crew and Superjock, the emphasis is on full cream 80s synth boogie/disco funk and teaming up with the most distinctive vocalists possible; Natalia & E warm up the dance with a little deep house provocation, B Bravo drapes herself over the fattest bassline of the Ep, Love Child brings the purple feels to the hip-flaring "I Let Go" while Jackie Rain brings us back to earth with R&B sensuality on "Livin It Up". Game over.

  1. Stand On The Word (unreleased mix) (4:46)
Review: Repress! Excellent sounding pressing of an impossibly rare LP track, that has never sounded as clear or dynamic as this version. Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, New York City, in 1982 and pressed only for the congregation, Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording) acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Avenue. Rock & Soul shop were he worked. This was the place where most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados picked up on this new sound, and it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic, championed by Larry Levan, David Mancuso and others.
