For Your Love (12" repress)
Cat: PMFYL 001. Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. For Your Love (10:29)
  2. Aldeia De Ogum (6:14)
Review: ** Psychemagik classic repress alert ** Ah yes, "For Your Love", the 1978 Euro Disco classic from Chilly hasn't that been re/edited by at least 78% of Soundcloud's disco edit community? Correct - it's actually second only to the gazillion marketing tools presented as a remix that are helping to power forward the career of Lana Del Rey. Psychemagik are yet to remix Lana Del Lips so we can forgive them for adding to the slew of edits of Chilly's Yardbirds cover version already released. As it stands the Psychemagik version of "For Your Love" is a commendable revision which beefs up the low end and extends everything beyond the ten minute mark. Much better is the sub blessed take on Joyce's "Aldeia De Ogum" which should come with a Punta Del Esta Approved stamp.

  2. Nina's Tweeter (Mojo Filter Ju Ju Re Rub) (4:09)
Review: Longstanding editor / remixer / mysteryman artiste, freaky MF steps up to Wah Wah 45s Dubplate division with two straight up classical scorchers: Dionne's slow strolling Bacharach classic gets a warm deep house pump while Simone's mozzy-tweaking cult classic is given a superb psychedelic overhaul that utilises the original's drums with raw cosmic power. No filters required.

Tale Of Three Cities/Tangerine (Mike Maurro Disco remix)
 Add to cart
 in stock $11.80
  1. Tale Of Three Cities (Mike Maurro Disco remix) (9:03)
  2. Tangerine (Mike Maurro Disco remix) (10:26)
Review: Having recently impressed with a trio of Peak Hour remix 12" singles, Tom Moulton style "disco mixer" Mike Maurro turns his attention to two lesser known cuts from The Salsoul Orchestra's eponymous 1975 debut album. On the A-side, he deftly extends "Tale of Three Cities", making the most of the original track's sumptuous groove, impeccable instrumentation (think twinkling electric piano, jazzy guitar solos, and so on) and soaring Ron Baker orchestration. On the flip, he extends "Tangerine" even further, making the most of the hi-hat heavy rhythm track, flanged funk guitars, twittering flute lines, life-affirming choral vocals and snaking saxophone lines. Like the A-side, it's a sugary-sweet dancefloor treat.

Feel Good (12" repress)
Owl
Cat: OWL 001. Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. Feel Good (5:38)
  2. Toot (5:11)
  3. Rock Steady (5:01)
  4. Let Go (4:58)
Review: Sydney edit maestro The Owl inaugurates his new vinyl series in spectacular fashion after making a name for himself on SoundCloud over the last few years. Fans will be glad to know that his superb re-splice of "Feel Good" by J.R. Funk & The Love Machine has finally seen the light of day on wax, as well as a brilliant job of taking the razor to Curtis Mayfield's "Toot" that's equally worthy of your attention. On the flip, Aretha Franklin's classic "Rock Steady" gets a good dose of functionality that's perfect for bringing the house down at 2 AM (or even later!) while closing out the release in wicked style is his edit of a certain digger's delight by Tony Orlando, 1978's "(Don't) Let Go".

  4. South Beach Recycling - "Bongo Man" (5:00)
Review: Midnight Riot's recently-released Riot In Lagos compilation paid tribute - in some style, we should add - to the enduring influence of African music on contemporary dance culture. This sampler 12" gathers together four of the most sought-after cuts from the digital-only set. Drop Out Orchestra kick things off with the fuzzy guitars, glistening solos, relentless handclaps and bongo-heavy drum rhythms of Candido tribute "Jin Go La", before FSQ deftly fuse Afro-disco and electrofunk on dancefloor stomper "Shaking My Damn Head". On the flip you'll find the breezy, Balearic-influenced Afro-disco fluidity of Perdu's "Cece", and the sun-kissed juju business of South Beach Recycling's fabulous "Bongo Man".

  1. Like It Is (5:58)
  2. Nigerian Affair (6:57)
  3. Long Night Ahead (7:15)
  4. Pajama Stomp (6:36)
Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

  3. Sgt. Wolf Show Me Way (4:57)
  4. In Style (5:16)
Review: Longstanding editing, digging bearded fusilier, Rock returns to OYE with a well-spread flavour foursome. The contrast is instant as we switch from the b-movie cosmic funk and hammy harmonies of "Through The Night" to the slippery trip back to Chicago on "Oldschool Jack", "Sgt Wolf Show Me The Way" bundles deep into the realm of voodoo blues only to spit us back out again on the sandy-toed lazy summer breeze of "In Style". An edit for all seasons.

  4. Dues Paid Fast (How I Like) (5:20)
  5. Outro (0:27)
Review: The mysterious L-Farrio makes his entry on G.A.M.M with three crafty party treasures that seem too good to be debut releases. Cutting through the strong alias rumours are three broad takes on disco: the late 70s silk and soul of "Not Easy", the lolloping jazzier side of the dance with the organic brushed drums and Azymuth-style freneticism of "Jazz In Italics" and the filtered loopy funk and falsetto fun f "Due Paid". Long may the mystery continue...

  1. Funky Nassau - "Bahama Soul Stew" (Danny Krvit edit) (5:41)
  2. The Armada Orchestra - "For The Love Of Money" (Danny Krivit edit) (5:47)
Review: Ten years deep and these edit still pop... Krivit takes everything that rocks and pops on Orgone's cover of The Beginning Of The End's seminal "Funky Nassau", extends it, applies the breaks and turns it inside out. It genuinely can't fail. The very same can be said for his take on Armada Orchestra's cover of Gamble & Huff's O'Jays smash "For The Love Of Money". Focusing in on the instrumentation and slinkiness of the groove, Krivit is a true edit master.

  25. Betty Wright - "Where Is The Love" (DK edit)
Review: As celebrations of Miami's legendary TK Disco label go, this is rather special. The first disc sees notable New York DJ/producer Danny Krivit deliver a smooth, entertaining mix of label favourites, moving from the laidback, soulful shuffle of Peter Brown's for your love, to the upbeat, solo-heavy disco stomp of Wild Honey's "At The Top Of The Stairs", via killer cuts from the likes of Quartz, Ralph McDonald and Fern Kinney. The real heat, though, is on disc two, which gathers together 10 unmixed, full-length Krivit edits of superb TK cuts from Hokis Pokis, Jo Bisso, Jimmy McGriff and Betty Wright.

  4. Dig It (5:57)
Review: Serbian label Disco Fruit continues its successful of 12"s right up to the end of 2016 with another slice of feel-good party business from label boss Tonbe. "I'm The One" is a bright and breezy slice of funky house lashed with diva vocal turns that tap into the same vein as Futureboogie and other such esteemed labels. Alkalino meanwhile simmers the track down to a lean club-ready jam before "Feel The Night" on the flip heads straight to the Philly strings for its own clean and punchy reverie. "Dig It" rounds the EP off with a slightly slower groove peppered with yet more classic disco signifiers.

  3. D-D-D (6:33)
  4. The Paper (feat K-Tel) (5:16)
Review: Understood to be the work of Earl Jeffers, this fresh slice of white label edit goodness comes with four chopped up jams honed for ultimate dancefloor impact. First up is "Thank You", which takes a tough house backdrop and throws some fiery soul down on top of it in a manner you could imagine Moodymann dropping with satisfaction. "Badadu" meanwhile heads into a more delirious headspace, the sampling meeting with fierce showers of synth FX and a generally raucous arrangement. There are no prizes for guessing what "D-D-D" samples, but it does so with all the fireworks you would want from a house re-rub of such a classic. "The Paper" makes for a fine finishing move with its choppy vocal slices and swooning strings.

  1. En Trance (5:03)
  2. Schwarzen Mer (5:45)
  3. City People (4:33)
  4. Die Marinette Der Zeit (5:21)
Review: The Bahnsteig 23 crew are flying towards the end of the year with a salvo of essential wares from their established crew and new faces alike. Sweden's Albion Venables has been doing the business on labels such as Ambassador's Reception and Macadam Mambo for the past seven years, and his first turn on Bahnsteig doesn't disappoint. In a flurry of eclecticism, the mood veers from the bubbling kosmische tones of "En Trance" through to the schlocky funk of "Schwarzen Mer", mixing live band dynamics with quirky electronics and keeping the groove delightfully authentic. The diversity maintains on the flip as "City People" taps up a moody New York flavour and "Die Marinette Der Zeit" strikes a more classic funk note.
