  3. Hot Voodoo Dub (7:45)
Review: Legendary musician, DJ and broadcaster Philippe Krootchey was a hugely influential creative whirlwind throughout the 70s and 80s in France. Founder of Love International, frequent Casablanca collaborator with the likes of Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Mathematiques Modernes and an active member of France's foremost gay rights groups, his political and creative messages were clear in every action he made. Originally released in 1984, "Qu'est Ce Qu'il" carries a strong anti-racial message with humour that worked so well he re-sang it English and it eventually became "Whatazzy". Flip for "Hot Voodoo Dub" to find his creative messages as a studiosmith were also very clear.

Review: Disco Hamam's Hamam House launched in 2014 and they've left us hanging at a lonely taverna table ever since... Knowing the party would warm up once again. Three years later, it truly has an a largely Turkish collective lay down a supreme collection of eastern funk trips. Fattish's "Gel Seher" adds a little swaggering house beat beneath the soaring vocals and strings, Kozmonotosman gets mischievous with a loose-string twang jam while Kurt Adam enshroud us with a strangely percussed subverted lounge ballad. Tokyo Matt takes a final roll of the dice with a tropical finale laced with fretless bass finesse.

Review: In a taxi en route to an airport, Gerd Janson mentioned to Midland that he might have some demos for the label that he had been working on with fellow Frankfurter, Shan. What resulted were a pair of tracks that perfectly nail the vibe and what the label is about, 'soundtracking the moments of the night and day when everyone on the dancefloor feels like a family.' Legend has it that in 2015, Midland watched Janson close Berlin's infamous Panorama Bar. The way he played on the night, the energy levels he maintained in the room altogether inspired him to write some music influenced by the experience. The tracks that followed were the first release on Regraded and fast forward to this, the third release: it all seems to have come full circle.

  1. Ja!!! (The Mighty Zaf edit) (8:21)
  2. Parada De Lucas (The Mighty Zaf edit) (5:19)
Review: Scalpel-wielding record dealer turned producer the Mighty Zaf is the man at the controls on this inspired 12". It sees the LoveVinyl co-founder rearrange a couple of vintage cuts from Brazilian musician Ed Motta. On the A-side he tackles "Ja!", an exquisite chunk of carnival-friendly jazz-funk/disco fusion that was first featured on the artist's 1993 album Ao Vivo. Zaf's edit is naturally sympathetic to Motta's original, subtly extending it in all the right places while removing a few bits and pieces here and there. Flip for the big man's fine rework of the arguably even more loved-up 1988 cut "Paradas de Lucas", where starry synths and passionate vocals ride delay-laden drum machine hits and a killer jazz-funk bassline. The sound of summer, without a doubt.

  1. SSJJ - "KIM4SW" (6:12)
  2. Devin Dare - "KLY (MXXX)" (6:08)
Review: Split Limited Edition 12" on Funkineven's cult label Apron. On the A side is SSJJ making their debut with the deep and dusty late night disco loops of "KIM4SW" and truly filtered to perfection, might we add! On the flip are Devin Dare, who are a DJ and production team from Brooklyn, New York City and comprised of Duane Harriott and Sean Marquand. Their second release for the label (after several hot EPs on Stilove4music), their contribution is the lo slung and hypnotic bliss that is "KLY (MXXX)" that keeps on with that soulful tip until that massive drop: and it goes all '80s neon-lit crazy. Nice one!

  1. Two Sharp Pencils (Get Bad) (Anna Wall & Corbi remix) (6:32)
  2. Two Sharp Pencils (Get Bad) (Jamie 3:26 Punk Funk version) (6:56)
Review: Queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but Music For Freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. Their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. Originally released back in 1984, 'Two Sharp Pencils (Get Bad)' is a record by Queen drummer Roger Taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. Now this overlooked track remixed by Anna Wall & Corbi looks set to become one of the summer's most essential records. Wall is a is a key player in London's underground house music scene. Her label The Bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while she herself has DJ'd all over the world. Corbi is an Ibiza based DJ and producer and co-founder of Melon Bomb: one of The White Isle's biggest parties. Having met while working at house giant Defected Records some years ago, Anna felt that Corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix. The result is one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017.

Review: Fresh from his impeccable Fabric mix, in which he lays down nothing but his own creations, Dan Snaith finally unleashes some of the mix's many highs for our own mixing pleasure. "Face To Face" has been anticipated for a while thanks to its sultry stripped-back loose-stringed groove and late-entering vocal, "Tin" sees Dan incorporating the same rising, crisp euphoria you find in his Caribou work as synths flutter over a chugging late 90s style house beat while "Xing Tian" shuffles and twists with a little more fuzz and unpredictability. Classic Daphni.

Review: Sacramento boogie merchants, Risque affiliates and all-round soul doctors Love Cryme return to the Pendergrass party with two more stone cold cuts. "Electric Lady" soothes with an 80s synth soul style where singer Tucker really shines in the forefront with his honeyed dulcets. "Under The N Fluence" hits the later hours of the night with a supreme new jack city style kick laced with some finger scorching guitar licks. Cryme de la cryme.

  3. Slower Circle (4:20)
Review: Name a highly respected and innovative label in techno and there's a strong chance Chaim has blessed it. Moscoman's Disco Halal is a perfect fit for Chaim who's signature flexes around the alluring, mystical and hypnotic aesthetics and instrumentations of the east. "Perfect Circle" is the perfect example as it charms the softest of snakes from the deepest of pockets then brainwashes them with an array of trippy vocal stutters and spine-rippling chords. "Ha Alla" maintains the spiritual feels with a little more steel drum introspection while "Slower Circle" takes elements of the lead track and brings them right down into a low-lidded slumber jam. Sweet dreams.

  3. Yonge Street Jam Band (Jonny 5 Discomix) (8:58)
Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

  2. Colossio - "Esta En Mi" (5:18)
  3. Thomass Jackson - "Fantomas" (6:26)
  4. Inigo Vontier - "Namaste" (6:38)
Review: It's not often we get an insight into the electronic music of South America, so all hail the arrival of Calypso from Mexico's Inigo Vontier and Argentina's Thomass Jackson. The tracks featured certainly strike a unique chord, with Mendrix weaving a seductive, noirish tale full of brooding guitar and slow ticking drums, while "Colossio" takes on a darkwave tone on the wonderfully creepy "Esta En Mi". The label bosses tackle the B side, with Jackson's "Fantomas" sporting a sharper dancefloor sensibility without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Vontier rounds the EP out with the weirdo boogie throwdown of "Namaste", sure to pique the interest of anyone locked into the sound coming out of the speakers.

Review: Sneaker; not just a cool sounding name... Edits as strong, rigorous and mind blowing as his require comfortable footwear. Lavish synth funk leads with a eastern allure on the infectious "Goddess", "Watumba" is tom tom tamping funk beast that you could imagine every DJ from Harvey to Hell spinning while "Magic Fly" takes us on a slightly less obscure but thrilling orchestral cosmic sojourn. "Do It" rings the final bell with kitsch staccato synth effect and playground vocal calls to action. Tighten up your laces and do the robot.

  1. Feel It (7:22)
  2. Inside Out (9:12)
  3. Clarity (5:30)
  4. Sugar (7:46)
Review: New York meets Brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. This is a new, exciting realm for Homage, but they surely know they're onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of Tech Support. There are classics embedded into these fine jams, with "Feel It" coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. "Inside Out" is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while "Clarity" heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits. By way of contrast "Sugar" is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

  1. No Vacancy (8:02)
  2. No Vacancy (dub) (8:34)
Review: Justin plays by his own rules... We all know this. Late of !!! and Out Hud, in the last few years he's been responsible for a slew of universally charged and eclectically fused dancefloor blunderbusses. "No Vacancy" follows two deep fried twists of Shit Robot and Felix Dickenson earlier this year. Chugging but light footed, heavy but charged with crisp uplifting elements, oozing just as much dub sentiment as house, all smelted together with comicity, "No Vacancy" is a surefire go-to party-lifter... And will be for a long time to come. No one's laying down grooves quite like Van De Volgen right now.
