Let's Talk (12")
Cat: BEGIN 08. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Let's Talk (4:48)
  2. Aight (6:20)
  3. Cut The Paste (4:56)
Review: James Holroyd's Begin project has been responsible for some of the most magical Balearic music of the last seven years. We say last seven years; Let's Talk is actually the first Begin EP since 2014. It gathers together three tracks that sit somewhere between dubbed-out re-edits and original productions. The title track sets the tone, wrapping jazzy guitar solos, becalmed piano motifs and spoken word snippets around an intoxicating, jazz-fuelled downtempo groove. "Aight" sees Horoyd getting busy with delay-laden old school house vocal snippets, woozy chords and a languid broken beat rhythm, while standout flipside "Cut The Paste" is a trippy, pitched-down chug-fest rich in ghostly chords, fuzzy synth stabs, mutilated modem noises and a druggy arpeggio style bassline.

  1. Skin To Skin (5:06)
  2. Love You Down (4:58)
Review: Hugely influential, innovative and talented Leroy Hutson was so prolific throughout the 70s and 80s he could let cuts as crisp as this remain unreleased. It's almost criminal. Luckily Saph have been on the case and cracked it with this new series. Now on the second part, here's we're taken deep into dance with two straight up rare groove gems; "Skin To Skin" is a sweet-synth soul jam that shimmers with Miami's freestyle melting pot of the time. "Love You Down", meanwhile, slips and slides with bass so lewd it should come with a warning.

Is It All Over My Face (remastered)

Cat: WES 22129. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Is It All Over My Face? (Female vocal) (6:54)
  2. Is It All Over My Face? (Male vocal) (9:58)
Review: There's no doubt that Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face" is something of a disco classic; arguably, it's one of those records that any discerning disco DJ should have in his or her collection. This reissue features both the popular "Female" and lesser-known "Male" versions - the latter blessed with arguably better percussion and thrillingly eccentric horns but worse vocals - in remastered form. The re-master only serves to highlight the quirkiness and looseness of Arthur Russell and company's playing and Steve D'Aquisto and Russell's deft production. If it's not in your collection, it should be - if only for the celebratory eccentricity of one of disco's baggiest anthems.

Sandman (12")
Cat: BC 010. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Mannmademusic - "Sandman" (5:16)
  2. Mannmademusic - "Get Up" (remix) (6:38)
  3. Jank - "Doin' It" (Mannmademusic remix) (6:06)
  4. Jank - "Doin'It" (5:58)
Review: Under the now familiar Mannmademusic alias, Ian Mann has delivered fine material for Shadeleaf, Lumberjacks In Hell and Glenview. Here he makes his first appearance on fast-rising Bristol disco-house imprint Boogie Cafe. Opener "Sandman" is superb; a kind of colossally beefed up edit that underpins the soulful, party-starting source material with bustling new beats and bass. In contrast, "Get Up (Remix)" is a dustier and woozier, jazz-flecked deep house affair of the sort we'd expect to hear from Detroit producers such as Andres. Flip for the debut of previously unheard producer Jank. "Doin' It" is a chugging, LTJ style edit of a super-sweet soul cut rich in undulating bass and twinkling keys. Fittingly, Mannmademusic provides a jauntier, deep house flavoured remix.

Afro Edits Vol 2 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: OTE 002. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Ibi Won (Cove edit) (6:26)
  2. Down Down Down (R Kitt edit) (6:32)
Review: Orange Tree Edits' first release, a stamped white label featuring two killer Afro edits by Jimmy Rouge, became a top selling release on its release last month. There's every chance that this similarly minded follow-up, featuring reworks by Cove and R.Kitt, will be just as successful. Cove steps up first, adding a little house swing and subtle dancefloor polish to the organ-heavy, percussion rich Afro-soul haziness of "Ibi Won". On the flip you'll find R.Kitt's interpretation of "Down Down Down", an undulating, funk-fuelled Afrobeat cut that he's turned into an entertaining Afro-house shuffler.

Review: Brush up your spikes, curl up into a tight ball and prepare for another sense-blurring technicolour trip as Pessoas Que Eu Conheco updates the steamy Sega love letter series he commenced in 2014. Don't forget to collect as many gold coins as possible as we glide through the glistening suite of timeless instrumentals; the soothing synth boogie pace set in "V", level by level we come closer to the funkiest end boss of all time - the wavy synth-tom tickling, bass popping final movement "VX". Game over.

  1. Hip (6:44)
  2. Heart (6:04)
  3. Hole (6:41)
  4. Hair (5:28)
Review: Having already dazzled with her initial appearances on ESP Institute and Born Free, Japanese artist Moko Shibata continues to flourish as a producer with this utterly essential EP on Cocktail D'Amore. As with her previous releases, the mood is one of flamboyance and inventive melodies throughout, not least on the mutant disco celebration of "Heart". There is still some tougher fare to enjoy as well, with "Hole" proving to be particularly grubby, but overall there is a distinct sense that Shibata was reaching for a more disco influenced sound on this record, but it's far from your average slice of re-edited nonsense.

  1. Lets Go All The Way (6:05)
  2. Just Be Yourself (10:08)
Review: Derry boys Queen & Disco return for a third outing on their eponymous label, serving up two gently straightened out edits tweaked for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find the rising strings, rich orchestration and celebratory vocals of "Let's Go All The Way", a guitar solo-laden disco bumper tailor made for party-starting fun. Arguably even better is "Just Be Yourself", a high-octane disco thumper that's a little more loopy and house-friendly in construction. It sits somewhere between the thumping loop jams of Soundstream, the riotously camp thrust of Sylvester, and the "drum machine added" edit thrills of Boogie Cafe boss man Jimmy The Twin.

  1. Front Era (5:45)
  2. Outburn Memories (5:50)
  3. Protocol Machinery (6:25)
Review: Few producers know their way around a modern disco instrumental like Rudman. On-point for well over a decade and still true to the original soul and machine warmth, the "Pagoda" EP reminds us of his skills: Put the needle down and prepare to glide from the stylish, stripped back synth-boogie of "Front Era" face-first into the deeper, bass-led mid-tempo house hypnosis of "Outburn Memories" before floating away into the ether with the dubby, key stroking session "Protocol Machinery" where the walking bassline does all the talking.

  4. Front Era (Greeen Linez mix) (4:14)
Review: Spotted on his "Pagoda" 12", Zagreb nu disco OG refixes our focus and adds a new lease of life to its velvet keys, warm, measured funk aesthetic and occasional cowbell tickles. Each remix adds a new chapter; Pete Herbert brings a different twist and bigger sweeps to the synths, A Vision Of Panorama Balearic the Dickens out of things with loose legged gliding synths and slo-mo sunset finish while Greene Linez closes the show on a sweet and slinky two-step flex. Something for every occasion. Tip!

  5. A Glass Of OJ (4:21)
Review: Neroli bossman Enrico Crivellaro returns with his first 12" in quite some time. As always, it's a genuine odyssey that digs deep and runs the whole groove gamut... The light-stepping slap-bass and sugar-soul harmonies of "Things", the Clausellian spirituality (and mental percussion) of "City", the blushing soul haze of "Supreme", the piano-primed Italo flourishes of "Pistoleros" and the rich upbeat soul and prominent bass runs of "A Glass Of OJ"... Slam jam, thank you ma'am.

Review: Argentinian keyboardist Carlos Cutaia has been active since the early 70s, but diggers have long been fawning after his mid-80s LP Orquesta. Fusing catchy pop-rock workouts with truly madcap moments and glued together by lots and lots of synths, it's little wonder that the Emotional Rescue gang were enamoured with the release and resolved to put together a reissue. There is some really adventurous production going on here, with "Juegos Confusos" being particularly flamboyant and "Uranio Enriquecido" ramping up the oddball keys and splashy effects. Meanwhile the likes of "Sensacion Melancolica" nail that slow and seductive synthwave sound impeccably.

Review: Sydney production unit Hugo Gruzman and James Lyell have served their time as Flight Facilities, serving up numerous feel good singles and remixes for the Hype Machine since they first emerged back in 2010 on Bang Gang. Now fully fledged members of the Future Classic cause, Gruzman and Lyell get the opportunity to explore the Flight Facilities sound more extensively with their debut album Down To Earth. It's a worthy title too, as there's a lack of pretence to these fourteen tracks, with the instrumental work from Flight Facilities geared to giving the contributing vocalists the spotlight. The Stee Downes featuring "Hold Me Down" and Owl Eyes collab "Heart Attack" are both highlights and offer some hint at the sonic diversity covered within.
