Review: San Francisco trio 40 Thieves has never been particularly productive, dropping a handful of impressive releases over the course of the last decade. It's something of a pleasant surprise, then, to discover that this long-awaited debut album encompasses an impressive 20 tracks over two discs (or, if you prefer wax, four slabs of vinyl). It's exciting to report, too, that The Sky Is Yours is also rather good. Sitting somewhere between low-slung punk-funk, misty-eyed Balearica, slacker dub-rock, stargazing disco, wonky jazz, stripped Italo and bubbly nu-disco, the 20 tracks bristle with sassy alternative attitude and intoxicating underground flavour. It takes a little time to soak it all in, but it's worth the effort; The Sky Is Yours is full of weird and wonderful highlights.

  2. Acid Dreaming (4:11)
Review: Deliciously care-free, sunny-sided and mildly cosmic: Brooklyn's Aimes delivers yet another pert pop package. "Pleasure Cruise" is a hooky, synth pop jam that will have you singing along before the end of the first play. Imagine Hot Chip on the fluffiest of jags or Sebastien Tellier on the poppiest of flexes and you're kinda close. The vocoder-heavy lolloper "Acid Dreaming", meanwhile, sits somewhere between Air and Jim Noir with its unabashed retro-future charm. The pleasure is ours.

  9. Buffalo Springfield - "Expecting To Fly"
  10. The Space Lady - "Major Tom (Coming Home)"
Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

  1. Dark Silence (long version)
  2. Dark Silence (Art Fine version)
Review: San Francisco's Dark Entries label does a good line in reissuing obscure, long forgotten, left-of-centre gems (their excellent collection of Patrick Cowley's little known soundtrack work for gay porn films, School Daze, was arguably one of the compilations of 2013). Here, they've unearthed another overlooked gem - Art Fine's previously rare-as-hen's-teeth dark Italo-disco gem "Dark Silence" (L200-plus for an original 1985 copy, should you be feeling flush). It's pretty much a straight copy of the New Wave-inclined original, with the sparser, looser "Long Version" (in which producer Fabrice Belli gives the synth melodies a little more room to express themselves) joining the dense "Art Fine Version".

  4. Nico
Review: In the lull between albums, Kasper Bjorke offers this neat clear yellow twelve inch shaped vinyl package of all new material to tide fans of his sophisticated scandoteque sounds over! Proceedings get off to a fine start with the title track "Symptones" driven by some analogue bass flatulence and unassuming 808 rhythms, whilst the layered synth undulations draw some unique dynamism. Its A Side counterpart "Discopick" practically lollops into action, with ankle hugging basslines and spacious drums allowing for a creeped out 80s discotheque tone to unfold as it progresses. Check the flip for the electro boogie thud of "Man From Venice" which bursts into a cacophony of synthtastic drama gleefully, whilst "Nico" is Bjorke's bubbly ode to the man like Nico Jaar.

Review: Swedish producer Axel Boman seems to have been around forever, delivering solid and occasionally sensational deep house. In fact, he first emerged in 2009, and somewhat surprisingly Family Vacation is his debut album. It's a rather impressive beast, if truth be told, offering a whirlwind trip through his inspirations, from the downtempo analogue wooziness of "Let's Get Nervous" and jaunty, jazz-wise, US-influenced deep house of "Son of a Plumber", to the dreamy electronics and off-kilter rhythms of "No! No! No! No!", and the Theo Parrish-goes-Calypso vibes of "Bottoms Up". Most impressive of all, though, is the dark, humid, tropical pagan flex of "Kings & Emperors". Its' African voodoo atmosphere offers a startling alternative to the quiet positivity found elsewhere.

  4. Baby I'm Yours (La Funk Mob remix)
Review: 2010 looks like it's going to be a very big year for Parisian producer Thibault Berland aka Breakbot. As part of the Ed Banger family he's been producing a steady slew of quality remixes for Metronomy, Justice, Sebastian Tellier and Late Of The Pier, and now he's stepping up with excellent new material of his own.

In the vein of seriously smooth late 70's rockers like Hall and Oates and Michael McDonald, the title track has tons of charm courtesy of a vocal from Irframe. Add to that the modern production of Holy Ghost or Discovery-era Daft Punk and it's a pretty special disco-flavoured slice of sophisticated French pop.

Another man who's becoming hot property for 2010 is German producer Siriusmo, who turns in a remix that matches Breakbot's sense of retro fun and studio mastery. Far from Siriusmo's more Techno roots, this mix is almost a Psychedelic rock song, complete with cowbells and chiming 12-string guitars. It's weird and wonderful, and has more than a nod to Archie Bell and The Drells' seminal "Tighten Up".

Yet madly it's not been available on vinyl for almost its entire lifetime. Here newly emerged vinyl-revivalists Be With have reissued 500 copies. Review: Laurent Garnier began the LBS (Live Booth Sessions or Loud Bass & Samples) concept in 2010, as a means of experimenting with live techniques. The crew incorporates Garnier himself, as well as Benjamin Rippert on keyboards and Scan X on machines. The Timeless EP begins with "Jacques In The Box" delivering a full-impact slice of techno sprinkled with surging synthesisers and climbing polyphonic key strokes. The percussion seems to melt into one element as the kick drum drives this fast, hard and slightly euphoric techno jam. Loud Disco's mix of "Our Futur" will surely capture the ears of any large crowd caught in the reverie of a darkened nightclub, with a notable chord progression and sharp, saturated snare drum.

  4. Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Review: J Rocc has long been one of the most widely regarded re-editors on the hip-hop and crate diggin' scenes, and has previously completed commissions for the likes of Stones Throw and Minimal Wave. Here, he tackles a track each from esteemed disco labels Salsoul and West End. His A-side version of the much tinkered with First Choice jam "Let Know Man Put Asunder" was clearly inspired by Ron Hardy's legendary reel-to-reel version, and expertly loops up key passages to create a relentlessly sweaty, floor-friendly groover. Flip to the B for his take on Loose Joints' similarly renowned "Is It All Over My Face", which seems to give greater emphasis to the original's crazy instrumentation, rather than the over-familiar vocal.

Review: Before finding fame as a Fairlight-sporting composer of 1980s TV soundtracks, Jan Hammer was the bandleader of his own jazz-funk combo. "Don't You Know", which was first released as a single way back in 1977, is undoubtedly one of the group's best outings - a kind of missing link between Rotary Connection, Herbie Hancock, and 1980s proto-Balearica. This limited edition 12" features the superb original and an extended rework from Munich-based scalpel fiend Alkalino. He's version is undoubtedly tastefully done and in-keeping with the sweet and dreamy feel of the original, even if it does include a metronomic new, DJ-friendly beat pattern underneath.

Review: Bay Area legend Ken Hopkins returns with four more delicious dishes. Part synth boogie, part electro soul, part freestyle, part R&B; Ken's musical melting pot is frothing with soul right here. Each track tailored for the sunnier months, Ken commands all instruments and honey-coated vocals as we glide from the protohouse boogie of "Back For More", the ghetto gumbo fusion of "Can't Let You Go", the falsetto Plantlife smoothness of "Music" and the more dancefloor directed freestyle freakery of "Stuffin' 4 Ya Muffin'"

Review: The passing of Loft DJ and promoter David Mancuso late last year has added an extra layer of poignancy to this latest volume in the long running Loft Classics series. As usual, the tracklist is reflective of Mancuso's love of mixing things up. So, there's the spiritual jazz bliss of "East", the sweet, soulful disco bliss of The Sisters Love's "Give Me Your Love", the solo-laden jazz-funk of "Happiness Bend", the superb Francois Kevorkian mix of Grace Jones' cover of "Warm Leatherette", and even a dash of David Bowie. It also includes Pleasure's "Joyous", a spiraling chunk of disco-funk that's still able to turn dancefloors into a sweaty mess 40 years after it was first released.

Review: Over the course of the last decade, dub-soaked musical fusionist Lord Echo has delivered a string of fine releases, including two top-notch albums. Given his fine track record, it's perhaps unsurprising that Soundway has snapped up the Kiwi producer's third full-length excursion, Harmonies. It features contributions from a posse of guest collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - and giddily infuses reggae and rocksteady with disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, Afro-beat, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, all told, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Review: It would be fair to say that Magnus Sheehan has taken his time over Echo To Echo, his long-promised debut album for Full Pupp. Since debuting back in 2006 with the brilliant "Kosmetisk", the Oslo-based producer has delivered sporadic singles that hint at greatness. Echo To Echo is, thankfully, a largely impressive affair, with his trademark spacey, colourful synthesizers taking pride of place throughout. Stylistically, it's perhaps a little more varied than you might expect, frequently veering off his familiar Scandolearic nu-disco course to take in elements of dreamy deep house, tactile techno, IDM, electronica and an obviously icy take on new-wave. Throughout, it remains melodious and evocative, as with much of the best Norwegian electronic music.

  1. Forever Dolphin Love (original)
  2. Forever Dolphin Love (Mickey Moonlight remix)
  3. Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan extended rework)
Review: The always refreshing Phantasy Sounds label does their bit for the Keep Vinyl Alive campaign with a rather special twelve inch version of the delightfully obscure "Forever Dolphin Love" from Connan Mockasin - check the bizarro video too! Naturally the presence of an Erol Alkan remix is big news and the Phantasy boss has delivered perhaps his finest work in some time, subtly twisting the introspective ode to porpoises into a burning, cosmic, late night jam that clocks in at ten glorious minutes. Far removed from the more abrasive dancefloor workouts Alkan has been indulging in of late, it's a tantalising example of his forever blossoming production skills. In addition the vastly under rated Mickey Moonlight goes deep on a remix which sounds like Mockasin is reciting the track from the depths of an ocean, with some particularly excellent stretched out effects. Housed on a totally clear twelve inch, this is special from top to bottom.
