The Redders EP (red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRITSYS 005. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "No Go" (3:14)
  2. Redders & Gorgon Sound - "96 In One" (4:20)
  3. Redders & Sam Binga - "Dem Ones" (2:15)
  4. Redders & Moresounds - "Sexy Or Sweet" (2:43)
  5. Ruffhouse & Clarity - "Aphasia" (Redders & Sam Binga remix) (4:47)
  6. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

  1. The Undertaker (P Jam remix) (3:43)
  2. The Undertaker (Hi5 Ghost remix) (4:12)
  3. The Undertaker (Impey remix) (4:41)
  4. The Undertaker (Darkness remix) (3:19)
Review: Now almost two years old, Trends and JLSXND7RS break-heavy thunder-cut "The Undertaker" is now on its third lease of life. First as an original instrumental, then as a riotous grime cut with Flirta D, now as a four-pack of killer versions: P Jam twists up the drums and prangs out the bass with a little more FX and space. Hi5 Ghost starts off lightly with a sci-fi sheen and gradually builds the drums with added crunch. Impey turns the bassline into a rubber ball over a pneumatic two-step with Radioactive Man style funk while Darkness takes straight back to 2000 with a clap-heavy dark garage salute.

  3. Vendetta In Space (4:40)
  4. Falcon 2 (4:40)
Review: White Peach frontliner, London's Lington lays down his widest document to date. Hard and clappy through and through, this is straight-up undiluted instrumental grime for club. "Informa" brings the wave factor with its swooning synths while the string-laced "Grand Line" is much harder on the rata-tat-tat factor. The title track takes the prize for its slow-marching drama and thunder-drums ghosting from the corners before quickly retreating. "Falcon 2" brings us to a wonderfully sleazy close with big purple-funk feels on the flabby synth leads. Ready for take off?

  1. The Progress (3:31)
  2. Devi (3:54)
Review: Launched earlier this year, Kromestar's freshly-minted label Library Music looked to the considered talents of one Daniel Scrilla for its debut transmission; the Tell Dem 12" set the bar high in terms of quality, forward thinking Electronic Bass Music. It's no wonder then, that Kromestar himself commits some fresh cuts for this second Library release then, with lead cut "The Progress" a ripe example that classicist dubstep still feels fresh and vital. On the flip, "Devi" comes across like a classic Deep Medi B-side, pairing flute melodies from a distant continent with a sense of space and some killer drum programming.

  2. Man Like Me (3:03)
Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

  2. Iglew - "Lullaby" (4:39)
  3. Spooky & Boylan - "Peckham To Hackney" (3:44)
  4. Jawside - "Blurred Rain" (3:32)
Review: Instrumental grime pioneers Boxed stay fixed to the split artist approach on their second 12", scoring cuts from Logos, Iglew, Jawside and a Spooky & Boylan collaboration. For those unable to attend the regular Boxed dances throughout London and beyond, this is a great snapshot of some of the music that soundtracks them with collective co-founder Logos leading the charge. His "Marked 4 Death Gunman" flips the classic Slewdem crew Gunman riddim, adding his own hardcore twist with "Lullaby" from Gobstopper graduate Iglew offering a neat thrust between moments of calm and chaos. Spooky & Edgem Records artist Boylan trace a line between South and East London on "Peckham to Hackney" whilst Oxford-based newcomer Jawside closes out the 12? with hyper-effective angular dancefloor bomb "Blurred Rain."

Review: One of Germany's most respected dubstep producers, Bukez celebrates 10 years of honing his skills - often with humour and always with heaviness - with his debut album. Known for spanning the range from the deepest, shadowiest of cuts and the silliest of balls-out drops, Bukez lays it on the line right here in style. We slouch to the skank-packed summer jam "Shaka Taak", we gyrate uncontrollably to the timpani teases of "Eerie Voices" we enjoy sweet dub dreams in a ghost town on "Illuminated Droplets" and we're hurling our shoes out of the window by the time "Neonzombieattack" cuts through the rig. A lot of time has been spent on this body of work and you can really tell.
