Review: Finally! We've been waiting for a vinyl version of Rustie's third - and arguably most accomplished - album Evenifudontbelieve and it's landed at long last. From the dense rifle choir hits of "Peace Upzzz" to the epic cinematica of "Atlantean Airship" by way of the stomping hedonism of "What U Mean", Rustie's smelting sensations sit somewhere between trance and trap, fairgrounds and the underground.. And sound all the better for being on vinyl.

  5. Venom (4:07)
Review: Fresh from his #DontFreakOut mixtape, the Darqman returns with another cavalcade of fusions. "Hallucinate" says it all; crisp layers of synths twinkling and flexing over swaggering beats and groaning reese, it's all of rave's many nuances smelted down into a smoking 140 mould. "Flabbergasted" continues the theme with evocative synth lines that rise and rise like a delicately composed horror movie score while "2CI" pays respect to the hippy massive with a deeply trippy-borderline-paranoid spike-jam. Drawing to a close the south Londoner unleashes more poison with the frenetic, hornets-nest riffage of "Mosquito Bite" and the widescreen, jungle-referencing breakbeat anthemity of "Venom". Truly unique.

Review: It's here, the man behind that track "Harlem Shake", now throws us a full length on Glasgow based imprint LuckyMe, but he's matured a lot since that infamous track. The trap poster boy explores a varied selection of beats and feats on Aa, we particularly enjoyed the collaborations on here such as the full frontal assault of "Day Ones" feat Novelist and Leikeli47, the sombre yet sexy street sound of "Way From Me" featuring Tirzah, the exotic bass heavy swagger of Temple featuring the return of MIA with G DRAGON and "Kung Fu" featuring Pusha T & Future's street knowledge: speaking some truth proper!

  4. 21 (3:42)
Review:  His first proper body of work since his Mainframe album last year, Joker returns with four more reasons why he's in a league of his own: while "No Face" tickles our cheeks with velvet purple glove, "Only You" switches for a purple boxing glove and knocks us plain out with its big strings and romantic melodic twists. "Planet D" is straight out of the score from movie of Joker's life in 30 years time once he's colonised five planets with his universal funky language. Finally "21" reminds us of Joker's gully roots with a swaggering halftime vibe that flexes mentasm-muscles so hard three gyms have closed down in the time it's taken you to read this review. Classical badman.

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

  4. Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

Review: One of the funkiest individuals to emerge from grime (alongside Swindle), Silkie's long-since established his passionate jazz and p-funk bent... And right here he's taking it to a brand level. Opening with a cosmic salvo (penned with Swindle in fact) we're soon immersed in his squidgy, squelchy, synth-tickling world such as the Danny Breaks style sleaze of "Arcadia", the skippy jazz boogie of "Moda" and the purple wide-lapelled 80s flair of "Love Affair". His empathy for the dystopian corners of his world are still very much intact, however with the barbed swagger of "Swank", the Kraftwerkian iciness of "Entrapment" acting as neat reminders of Silkie's grime roots. Three albums deep and getting each time; Silkie's skill, Silkie scores.

Review: Their third birthday in tickling's distance, London grime institution Boxed catapult a new series of 12" releases featuring the work of their talented crew members and affiliates. Slackk & Dullah Beatz take us on a trippy walk through the woods where the toads croak bass, leaves crunch like tuned toms and branches snap like precision snares. Lloyd SB brings the breaks with stuttering edits and subtle amen splashes while Trends contemporises Geeneus's classic "Old Skool 2". Finally, we wrap up with the tear-jerking synthetic lullaby from Spokes. If you're not touched by "Tragedy In The Jasmine Garden" you are officially dead inside.

  2. Distinct Motive - "Krome" (5:07)
Review: Having announced this in September 2015, San Diego's Banana Stand South have eked out a dangerously long lead time on delivery on this. But, as those who've been pensively waiting will attest, the wait is worth it: Fill Spectre's "Battle For Spice" shakes with both a funky percussion and a devilish detuned bassline. Complete with a peppering of surprises and twists in the tales, this battle is of war-like proportions. Krome's "Distinct Motive" is slightly more conventional with its halftime beat but the crying bass groans that spiral further and further into paranoid chaos create a unique character. Especially when the added sub comes in at the last minute. Freaky.

Review: Whilst most people will have discovered the masterful productions of BNJMN via last year's still quite stunning sounding Plastic World album on Rush Hour's Direct Current label, the producer actually debuted on the Amsterdam label prior to that with a blink and you'll miss it Unknown white label. Dangerously prolific in the period since Plastic World, BNJMN marks his first material of 2012 with a second Unknown release for Rush Hour. This three track release finds BNJMN in precision driven rhythm form, with the opening production "Minus One" a sparse techno arrangement of rubbery basslines, gloopy drum sounds and frosty synths. This canny marriage of innate melodies with other worldly techno patterns continues on the flip with the gradual soar of "Shadow", whilst the multi textured "Unrest" wouldn't sound out of place on the Mathematics imprint.

Review: Acclaimed Glaswegian beat maker Hudson Mohawke continues his relationship with electronic music heavyweights Warp with a distinctly positive sounding mini-album. For those who've followed the Numbers man's blossoming career, the musical contents of Satin Panthers will be no surprise - though the sheer wide-eyed bliss and rush-inducing feel of tracks like "Octane" and "All Your Love" - a brilliant fusion of starburst electronics, sped-up vocal samples and snappy percussion - may thrill more than usual. Throughout, there's a rainbow-tinted, high definition finish that ensures a life-affirming feel so often previously lacking from the earnest Glaswegian's rhythmically complex works. As a result, Satin Panthers is a delirious blast of fresh air.

Review: Comprised of Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu and J-Cush, Future Brown are something of a US production supergroup, arriving on SoundCloud last year with the brilliant "Wanna Party". The subject of no small amount of hype, the group have evidently been happy to wait for the right label to ally themselves with, resulting in their first official release arriving on respected UK stable Warp. This release combines that first track with their follow-up "World's Mine" along with two alternate versions. If you haven't heard the group's forward-thinking blend of bass, hip hop and R&B yet, this offers a great place to get acquainted.

Review: While his Numbers contemporaries Jackmaster and Hudson Mohawke have been courting international superstardom (the latter soundtracking Apple ads and working with Lil Wayne and Drake), Rustie has stayed true to his roots. This second full-length - the follow-up to acclaimed 2011 debut Glass Swords - proves that it was a wise strategy. Green Language is a storming set, delivering blends of crunk, wonk-hop, 8-bit electronica, grime and post-dubstep rhythms that bristle with intergalactic synths and glassy-eyed, late night swagger. Rustie has carved out a niche of his own that's increasingly hard to define, but one that guarantees thrilling, next-level music. Green Language proves that emphatically.

So far in 2014, other than Aphex Twin's Syro, the label has released music from Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jackson & His Computer Band to Plaid, Nightmares On Wax and Rustie - with another album by Clark forthcoming. Now one of Glasgow's most colourful producers (check out the cover art), Hudson Mohawke returns to home base with his first official release since the Satin Panthers EP. As usual there's a kaleidoscope of sounds to be heard on Chimes alongside hip hop beats, footwork skitters and gangster 'woof' vocals, and if "Joy Fantastic" from Butter is a Hud Mo fav, then "King Kong Beaver" should fill you with hope that a follow up LP is on the way.

Review: Tom 'Toddla T' Bell has enjoyed a rapid rise to the higher echelons of dance music thanks to a robust sound rooted in the twin attractions of dancehall and B-more. For this second album for Ninja Tune, he seems hell bent on proving his eclectic credentials. With deviations into piano-laden, breakbeat-driven house, murky R&B, post dubstep-pop and Prince-ish sexfunk, plus collaborations with Roisin Murphy, Roots Manuva and Shola Ama, Watch Me Dance comes on like a contemporary take on Basement Jaxx - albeit with a distinct Sheffield twist (listen out for nods to Steel City bleep techno, Moloko and long-forgotten beat manglers the All Seeing I).

Review: The much-lauded Jamie XX rework of Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 album I'm New Here finally arrives, and it's pretty darn good. In truth there's little quite as gorgeously ambitious as the strangely anthemic teaser single "NY Is Killing Me" (included here), but that doesn't stop it being an excellent listen. Not so much a set of remixes as a total reproduction, We're New Here places the veteran beat poet's distinctive vocals at the heart of a heady, other-worldly soup of eclectic beats (think dubstep, hip-hop and wonky house), booming basslines, sparkling house riffs, blissful melodies and paranoid late night atmospherics. A near perfect 33 minutes, all told.

Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Review: It's been some six years since renowned misery guys Kevin Martin won plaudits for London Zoo, a typically dark, intense and aggressive full-length that showcased his unique ability to blend dubstep, grime, dancehall and dub techno textures into nightmarish new shapes. Angels & Devils, his belated follow-up, is intriguingly different. While the second half of the set is blessed with plenty of robust, floor-friendly riddims (each blessed with vocals from a range of impressive collaborators), the first half is an altogether more downbeat affair. In fact, it's these moments - the droning, dub-inflected ambience of "Pandi" and the bluesy, soundscape dub-soul of "Save Me" - that hit home hardest.

Review: Bristol-based basssmith Binga comes correct with his debut long one: a tightly-stitched suite of beats, flavours, cultures and vocalists, it's an immense listen whether you come at this from a jungle perspective, a beats point of view or a straight-up D&B angle: from iced-out instrumental rollers such as "Dark Day" and the chubby-bass ridden "I Tol U" to twisted future dancehall like the title track "Wasted Days" and trippy turbo grime "Badman Skin". Complete with an all-star cast of mic caressers - TT The Artist, Rider Shafique, Warrior Queen and Binga's long-term compadre Redders - this is a heavyweight document that really showcases both Binga's capabilities and the creative potential of future genre smelting. Don't waste any more time.

Review: Sam 'Binga' Simpson has always been a keen collaborator. In fact, his debut solo album - released under his previous Baobinga alias back in 2011 - was entitled Joint Ventures, and was entirely made up of co-productions. Wasted Days, the belated follow-up, is similarly minded, with the Bristol-based Hull exile being joined by an impressive roster of guest vocalists - Slick Don, TT The Artist, Rider Shafique and Warrior Queen amongst them - with old pals Om Unit and Chimpo also lending a hand. Impressive as it is, the genius of Wasted Days is in its' unique blend of bass music influences, with Simpson impressively fusing classic jungle, experimental D&B, footwork, ragga, dancehall, grime, IDM, smack-house and dubstep to create thrilling new hybrid workouts.

Review: This surprise debut album from German mystery men Anstam should be a cause for celebration. Having first made waves between 2007 and 2009 with a trio of bleak 12" singles that pitted contemporary grime and dubstep rhythms against classic and contemporary techno sounds, the fiercely secretive duo have released very little since. Dispel Dances continues that fruitful exploration of bass music's past and present, sneaking in Detroitian tech-jazz ("To All The Voices", "Handsome Talks The Talk") and hectic, next-level dubstep-jazz ("In The Bell Run") amidst the dubwise rhythms, basement atmospheres and smoky Berlin textures. The results are every bit as impressive as you'd expect.

Review: Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With "Qi" garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters "Xtatic Truth" appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. "Settle Down" combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track "Girl" speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

Review: Future Bass is the sound of right now, all new music, all exclusives. Compiled by Soul Jazz A&R Nicole Kenzie and Deep Medi Muzik's Kris Jones it's a comprehensive induction into the many strands of music that have splintered out of dubstep in recent times. Tracks from Mala and Four Tet which were included on the preceding sampler open this selection and set the tone for what follows. The melodica heavy steppas riddim of Mala's "Don't Let Go" form a perfect contrast to the nine minute organic house groove of Hebden's "Nothing To See". In addition, new tracks from artists with a close affiliation with Soul Jazz deliver more highlights, with Untold's "Fly Girls" a brilliantly icy take on brand retro electro funk. Vinyl fetishist Ramadanman contributes a truly unique 4 minutes and 44 seconds of aural delight in "Bass Music" which descends from a spiral of heavily effected vocal edits over crisp syncopation into an all encompassing low end thrust. Space is also made for the new school with tracks from producers such as V.I.V.E.K, Distal and Randomer. It's the latter's track "Puzzled" that is equalled in the captivating stakes by the "Air" from Kevin Martin's new project Black Chow.
