  2. Luv Zombie
Review: Hessle Audio continued their excellent form this year and introduced us to the new talents of Bandshell along with dropping that too-good-to-be-played, Objekt 12". Their long-time favourite, Elgato returned to Hessle Road with this stunning 2-tracker and its opener, "Zone" is a pleasingly odd bass rhythm, placing its deranged vocal firmly on top of the detached percussion elements swaying alongside the shimmering injections of lower frequencies. On the flip we have "Luv Zombie", another gorgeously far-out experimentation by our man Elgato, where his fast-paced drum shuffles meet distant waves of harmonics. This comes with a highly recommended stamp as per usual!

  1. Zim Zim Zim (feat Burro Banton) (4:32)
  2. Zim Zim Zim (Zim version) (4:35)
Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Review: Bristol's Joker is on fire right now. Amid signing and slinging tracks from the likes of Sh?m, Sorrow and Asa, he's dealt out some outstanding tracks throughout the year. Tracks like these purple punch-ups... where no vibe or tempo is out of bounds. From the sleazy synthetic swoons of "G Shit" to the slower-motion Megadrive twinkles and sonic glitter of "Glass Hearts", it's like Joker's taken his palette, mixed the colours and painted a whole new scenery. Forward-thinking...

  4. Da Stooge (3:39)
Review: A proper slice of history here: They Call Me Raptor (to use his full title) cooked these up over 10 years ago... Yet they still sound fresher than a lot of the competition today. Loosely swung, sample-rich and fearless in their drama and range, these will blow just as many minds now as they did when they first emerged on dub. Ranging from the eastern string badness of "Magic Circle" to the funk-riddled "Da Stooge" (which is more akin to hip-hop than grime), this really is premium gear. No formula adhered to, full character displayed - these are still ahead of their time now.

  1. We Can Make The World Stop
  2. Palace Og The Innocents
Review: It's been an immense year for TGM as they unleashed their long-awaited second album Love Death Immortality and toured the world with it. Here we find them taking a step back to 2011 with this between-album EP that's never been pressed to vinyl before now and shows how the trio morphed sonically and creatively from the deeper, more home-listening Drink The Sea to the Prodigy-level dancefloor slammers they have become. "We Can Make The World Stop" is a dirge-like kerb-crawling sleaze-bass stomper that's charged with thick triumphancy. "The Palace Of The Innocents" is more like their earlier material with its industrial strength hip-hop breaks, distorted arpeggiated riff and dreamy flutes. Both kill it.

  1. The Progress (3:31)
  2. Devi (3:54)
Review: Launched earlier this year, Kromestar's freshly-minted label Library Music looked to the considered talents of one Daniel Scrilla for its debut transmission; the Tell Dem 12" set the bar high in terms of quality, forward thinking Electronic Bass Music. It's no wonder then, that Kromestar himself commits some fresh cuts for this second Library release then, with lead cut "The Progress" a ripe example that classicist dubstep still feels fresh and vital. On the flip, "Devi" comes across like a classic Deep Medi B-side, pairing flute melodies from a distant continent with a sense of space and some killer drum programming.

  4. 21 (3:42)
Review:  His first proper body of work since his Mainframe album last year, Joker returns with four more reasons why he's in a league of his own: while "No Face" tickles our cheeks with velvet purple glove, "Only You" switches for a purple boxing glove and knocks us plain out with its big strings and romantic melodic twists. "Planet D" is straight out of the score from movie of Joker's life in 30 years time once he's colonised five planets with his universal funky language. Finally "21" reminds us of Joker's gully roots with a swaggering halftime vibe that flexes mentasm-muscles so hard three gyms have closed down in the time it's taken you to read this review. Classical badman.

Review: It's the remixes we've all been waiting for. Four massive names on one EP, each of the reversions on offer pay respect to the mighty Prodigy while pushing their renowned hooks and riffs into wholly new territories. Noisia's take on "Smack My Bitch" up has been doing the rounds for a while now, and sound all the better for being on vinyl, Alvin Risk's version of "Firestarter" includes some sizzling potty mouthed sonics, Zed's Dead's rub of "Breathe" twists the original riff into an entirely new melody while Major Lazer follow Noisia's technique and just add the essential sparkles. Review: From Croydon orginator Benga's dubplate smasher, to rising Bristol talent Komonazmuk's sharp as razor production, from the West London
sounds of Orien's grimy halfstepper to Rusko's deep spiritual reggae vocal, 'Tempa Allstars 4' is a cutting-edge representation of what is
working on the floors of dubstep events worldwide. Rounding things off is a refreshing 2-step flavoured offering from Martyn, more known
for his d&b productions but making waves with in dubstep, and a deep dark Youngsta styled roller from The Others.

  1. System Test (original mix) (5:58)
  2. 3-D (3:54)
Review: In the nine years since he first appeared on the scene, Kromestar has released a ridiculous amount of music, most of which is pretty darn good. He's scaled things back a bit this year, mind; amazingly, System Test is only his third 12" of the year. Sitting somewhere between classic dubstep, trap, 8-bit and grime, the title track features fuzzy, tumbling electronic lines, fizzing bleeps, deep space sci-fi synths, and, of course, the kind of sub that should make any bass-head go weak at the knees. Flipside "3-D" redresses the balance by emphasizing the sparkling electronic motifs and retro game melodies, though it's still a suitably sizeable floor-filler.

  2. Syncopy (Blawan's Tragt Mechanik mix)
Review: Fledgling Danish label Teal continue their mission statement to release interesting music regardless of genre. Their third release sees them turn to fellow Copenhagen resident Tobias Pedersen, who operates under the mysterious Beastie Respond moniker. "Syncopy" will draw obvious comparisons with Non Plus figureheads Instra:mental for its clear deviations into the slower, deep, mind altering end of the drum and bass spectrum. Amidst the sparse, crackling array of percussive rhythms and devious industrial textures there's a dubby warmth to the swing that adds a unique touch, whilst the overall tone sits just the right side of melancholia. Further kudos is awarded to Teal for enlisting Blawan to remix the track, with the R&S/Hessle lynchpin naturally embellishing proceedings with his own devious array of layered drum sounds whilst dragging the source material down a decidedly darker sonic corridor. Big tip!

Review: YES! We'd been waiting on this collaboration from UK start vocalist Wiley and shadowy electronic pioneer Zomby for a long time now, and it's about time it's landed on our shelves. "Step 2001" is a straight-up grime piece, a clicking, twisted groove made up of darting hi-hats and pacman sounds; you know when they say "they don't make them like they used to!"? Well, this doesn't apply here, as it's a serious head-dive back into the early noughties scene. There's also an instrumental version for maximum damage.

Review: Scene sergeant Youngsta returns with his first full release in years. Tag-teaming with rising producer Cimm, the vibe is deep, roomy and constructed with a stately, unhurried alien funk. Every element considered and fine-tuned, both tracks take us deep into a meditative mindset without ever pressing the snooze button: "Split Minds" rolls with bass tones so warm they almost bounce while "Redshift" takes us into an even dubbier pasture with some great attention paid to the sporadic rhythm elements. Beautiful.

Review: Rotterdam grime time: JLSXND7RS steps up with "Swift", a groaning, bleak jam with depth plunge bass tones that echo deep into the ground. Nico Lindsay provides the lyrical drama as he rifles through a sharp stream of conscious truths. Remix-wise Trends recharges the flow with a much more militant twist as AK47 snares cause serious damage. Loaded with instrumentals, all situations are covered here.

  4. As If Kid - "Bombay Mix" (4:26)
Review: Stamps of grime authority don't come any better than Slimzee and his foundation Slimzos imprint. Running from 2003-5, it had a huge impact on the game with everyone from Geeneus to Macabre Unit to Plastician (as Plasticman) Freshly revived for 2017, Slimzee's back on the ice jams, packing blisteringly fresh talent in the process: Stirling wraps up in bouncy subs and gets his graveyard on, Dallen brings the drama with the psycho stabs and thwacking snares on "Demons" and DJ Garna opens and shuts a case of straight-up murderation with his creeped out strings and demonised humanised textures. Last but not least, As If Kid mangles up your systems with a breakbeat hybrid that stutters and grunts with raw energy. Don't call it a comeback... Slimzee's stamp never went away but it's about to get even more dominant.

Review: Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With "Qi" garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters "Xtatic Truth" appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. "Settle Down" combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track "Girl" speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

  1. Moritz Von Oswald Trio - "Restructure 2"
  2. Digital Mystikz - "Restructure 2 Rebuild"
Review: A taster for the trio's forthcoming third album, Horizontal Structure, this single sees Von Oswald and collaborators Max Loderbauer and Sasu Ripatti (aka Vladislav Delay) further explore the notion of merging dub techno with other, previously unconnected styles. "Restructure 2" is a swirling, atmospheric piece, its languid, low-tempo groove accompanied by some tastefully spacey guitar playing and mellow jazzy vibes. It's understated, studied and about as far removed from Maurizio's "Ploy" as one can get, but yet it still retains much of the same cavernous production sound. The choice of remixer, Mala, is also surprising as it eschews Von Oswald's techno habitat in favour of dubstep. That said, the Digital Mystikz producer has a credible string of releases for DMZ, Tectonic and Soul Jazz, and like the Basic Channel producer, fully understands the power of the bass. There is also some subtle referencing to the time that Van Oswald first rose to prominence through the use of 'Intelligent Techno'-era melodies and the ambient outro, but Mala's remix is all about the tumbling drums and tribal, swinging rhythms.

Review: Nothing to cry about here: Dark Tantrums returns with something extra special. Having previously filled our crates by way of Get Darker, Deep Medi and Nebula, he now unveils his own imprint: Beyond Time. The name fits as each one of these carefully selected dubs trounces temporal or crass trend-based limitations: "Realisation" is king-sized machine funk, all molten steel and pneumatic drums, "Enchanted" plays the cosmic card with its foggy pads and ricochet snares while "Lift Off" takes you right back to the foundation with its unabashed jump-up energy. There's no messing around with this launch release. An on-point balance of pure, ageless dub for all heads and corners, launch releases don't get any better.

Review: Oh Benga. Where do we begin? Emerging from the depths of Croydon in the early noughties, Benga has been a pioneer and pivotal lynchpin in the ever-burgeoning dubstep movement. His previous albums, Newstep and Diary Of An Afro Warrior remain amongst the most influential long players of the genre's history, alongside commercial crossover collab with Coki, "Night" and a slew of other high profile releases on labels such as Tempa, Tectonic, Hotflush and Planet Mu. Firmly cementing his reputation as one of the scene's most pre-eminent figures, Benga brings us "Phaze One" - the first in a series of EPs on the seminal Tempa imprint. Bookmarked by the delightfully named "Baltimore Clap" and "No Bra, No Panties," the EP kicks off with jittering, dark riddims and aggressive slapstick, breathy tones. As digital bonuses, "Transform" - another bleepy bad one, and the aforementioned cheeky sampling, dancehall-esque "No Bra, No Panties" - conclude the EP with a resounding two fingers in the face. Great stuff.

Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".
