  2. Distinct Motive - "Krome" (5:07)
Review: Having announced this in September 2015, San Diego's Banana Stand South have eked out a dangerously long lead time on delivery on this. But, as those who've been pensively waiting will attest, the wait is worth it: Fill Spectre's "Battle For Spice" shakes with both a funky percussion and a devilish detuned bassline. Complete with a peppering of surprises and twists in the tales, this battle is of war-like proportions. Krome's "Distinct Motive" is slightly more conventional with its halftime beat but the crying bass groans that spiral further and further into paranoid chaos create a unique character. Especially when the added sub comes in at the last minute. Freaky.

  5. Ruffhouse & Clarity - "Aphasia" (Redders & Sam Binga remix) (4:47)
  6. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Review: Elysia Crampton came through for the first time this year with a pair of EP's, one for the impressive Boomkat Editions and another for the fledgling Total Stasis. Her latest piece of work appears on bass wizard Falty DL's label, the ambiguously named Blueberry Records. Much like her previous outings, "American Drift" is a mixture of many moods and styles, a blend of slow, meditative vocals and starry electronic atmospherics. "Axacan", on the other hand, is backed by a mi-tempo percussive swagger and boasts the same level of melodic psychedelia, while "Petrichrist" heads down tribal roads with its organic drums and odd waves of flutes, and "Wing" takes things down to r&b levels....far-out r&b levels that is! Recommended.

  1. We Can Make The World Stop
  2. Palace Og The Innocents
Review: It's been an immense year for TGM as they unleashed their long-awaited second album Love Death Immortality and toured the world with it. Here we find them taking a step back to 2011 with this between-album EP that's never been pressed to vinyl before now and shows how the trio morphed sonically and creatively from the deeper, more home-listening Drink The Sea to the Prodigy-level dancefloor slammers they have become. "We Can Make The World Stop" is a dirge-like kerb-crawling sleaze-bass stomper that's charged with thick triumphancy. "The Palace Of The Innocents" is more like their earlier material with its industrial strength hip-hop breaks, distorted arpeggiated riff and dreamy flutes. Both kill it.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: First appearing on Visionist's Lost Codes label in 2012, Birmingham-based producer Filter Dread was also responsible for one of last year's most interesting cassette releases in the Space Loops tape for the No Corner imprint. Although nominally linked to instrumental grime, the Space Loops cassette suggested that the producer's influences drew from jungle, rave and ambient just as much. Here Filter Dread re-emerges in triumphant fashion with the MIDI Space 12" for long-running UK label Ramp Recordings, which brandishes six tracks that showcase his individual take on the UK hardcore continuum. There's plenty of diversity in sound here too, with the dizzying darkside styles of "Clowns from Outer Space" and "MIDI Fighter" contrasting notably with the self explanatory "Jungle Ambience" and the stuttering sub bass delight of "Stolen Dub".

Review: Want to know the epitome of on-point? Butterz's 2015 output is the perfect example, be it the much needed reissue of Woo Riddim, or the TQD production supergroup of Royal T, DJ Q and Flava D or this latest 12" from the label. Ruff Sqwad man Prince Rapid needs no introduction and he's really on fire with this four track debut for Butterz which really lives up its title. From the moment standout cut "Hear This" clicks into gear, Rapid is on searing form channelling a raw energy comparable to Ruff Sqwad in their heyday some ten years prior. Special mention to the artwork which was shot in the same place a Ruff Sqwad photo was shot a decade ago.

Review: Visionist's Lost Codes label gets rebooted as a new sublabel to PAN, laying down some foundations ahead of the UK artist's long-mooted debut album for the Berlin label. Overseen by both Visionist and PAN founder Bill Kouligas, the first Codes release brings together two artists who have previously excelled on Lost Codes in Acre and Filter Dread. Working together for the first time, the six track Interference suggests this is a deadly partnership that should be given the platform to express itself further. Degraded 8bit sounds permeate opener "Drumz34" which comes across like early Actress played at the wrong speed, whilst sickeningly good sub bass is deployed on "Flash Speed" and "Trashed" is a superb exercise in slack jawed drum programming. Some cavernous bass kicks on this one. "Life" is wonderfully slippery in full flow, whilst "Unknown" is up there with Gramrcy's "Ruffian" in the heavyweight contenders of the year stakes.

Review: Woof! Local Action home in one the end of 2015 and the hotness doesn't look like stopping any time soon. Tom Lea has only gone and sweet talked T Williams into returning to his grime alias Dread D for the first time in almost a decade. As Dread D, Tesafa Williams pushed buttons on numerous grime classics for the Black Ops label including "Invasion". He has of course gone onto house music greatness as T Williams, but a return to this grime sound as Dread D seems perfectly timed, and superbly executed on the 4 track Siege 12" which brandishes three new cuts and an alternate take on the classic "Time Command". Powerful business.

  1. Things Movin On
  2. Heavy
  3. Left People
  4. Everynight
Review: Vae Victis follow their smashing debut release from The Analogue Cops and Blawan with apparent newcomer(s) Nightjars taking the reins but still maintaining the philosophy of analogue processes and hybrid styles. The concept is further crystallised here with two distinct sides to the record; starting with the 'raw' side, "Thing Movin On" steps and shudders in a sparse fashion, using very little percussion besides a kick and rimshot playing against a looped synth refrain and a purposefully distorted vocal sample. "Heavy" however fares far better with some nasty processing, as a mean acidic bassline rubs up against razor sharp hats in belting fashion. The more melancholic material in Nightjars' repertoire has been wisely saved for the 'clean' side, starting with the plush finish of "Left People". The drum patterns maintain the stripped back ethos, but in this instance a gently delayed melody rings out in a never-ending loop of repetition that seems to come from the Terry Riley school of composition. After that ambiguous exercise, "Everynight" positively shines for its focus and dynamics. While there's no greater complexity at work in the music, the pace and flow of the track feels far more engaging, not least when the vintage garage-house bassline comes in. Recommended.

  2. Knowing Looks
Review: Returning to WNCL after his exuberant re-emergence last year, Knowing Looks doesn't hold back in testing the limits of the dancefloor. "Listen To My 45" is the kind of track specifically crafted to sit uneasily in your ears on first listen but in time the wildly disparate elements amass to a glorious cacophony of damaged, unconventional groove. "Ghost Baby" darts into action on an uptempo micro-house groove before adopting a deranged synth. By the time thick layers of percussion and amen breaks whip around that lead synth there's no doubt that you're listening to one of the most starkly original producers in operation at present.

Review: Now almost two years old, Trends and JLSXND7RS break-heavy thunder-cut "The Undertaker" is now on its third lease of life. First as an original instrumental, then as a riotous grime cut with Flirta D, now as a four-pack of killer versions: P Jam twists up the drums and prangs out the bass with a little more FX and space. Hi5 Ghost starts off lightly with a sci-fi sheen and gradually builds the drums with added crunch. Impey turns the bassline into a rubber ball over a pneumatic two-step with Radioactive Man style funk while Darkness takes straight back to 2000 with a clap-heavy dark garage salute.

Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Review: The dust hasn't even thought of settling since Boothroyd teamed up with MCs Maxsta and Maniac to tell us their 100 problems, yet Rinse add more fuel to the creative fire with this pristine set of instrumentals. A showcase for Boothroyd's future flare, the tracks hit just as hard without the bruising bars. "No Retreat", for instance, is unfettered Modeselektor-level experimental electronica while "Mare Street Dickheads" seems all the creepier in its naked snake-like form. "Local Spitter", meanwhile, could easily be called "Local Hitter" in its vocal-less form thanks its eerie fusion of rave keys and sci-fi elements. The dust won't even settle from this and Bothroyd should have a queue of MCs at his door. Proper future.

Review: Bristol grime time: Asa & Sorrow step away from the deeper, ambient, home-chilling beats for something club-ready and waiting for MC damage. "Island Wave" is the waviest cut of the bunch thanks to its ever-changing tones and far-away vocal textures, "Knights Of Ren" is the murkiest cut of the bunch, sabre slicing up the dance like Kylo while "Barbaric" does that really creepy staccato string thing that both Asa and Sorrow do so well. Finally we hit the Lemz & Hi5Ghost twist of the lead track. Utilising the strings for more drama and spacing out the beats/bass, it's a neat switch up that retains full respect to the original.

Taking an evocative King Leonidas sample and using it as a trigger point for iced out sci-fi synths, 808 beats and squelchy robot bass, it's another stone-cold Spooky slapdown. Asa & Sorrow switch up on the remix, adding a more of a gun-slinging chug to the drums while retaining the gutsy 'no retreat, no surrender' vibe of the original. Biblical.

Review: Pow! XL finally unleash this double grip of critical slammers from Mumdance and Novelist that have been doing the rounds for a while now on the 12" format!!! Mumdance's production dynamic is stark, minimal and drenched in all manner of unique sound design - the perfect bed for Novelist's melodic lyrical bounces as he flexes a complex yarn of money, moods and mindsets. With instrumentals thrown in for good measure, this will suit all bass selector styles

Review: Prolific South London producer Kromestar has been a celebrated name on the dubstep circuit for the best part of a decade, dropping acclaimed singles on a wide variety of labels, including Hotflush, Deep Medi and Dubstar. Here he debuts on the brand new Nebula Music Group imprint, delivering a veritable assault on the senses in the shape of "Monster" - all ragged, pulverizing wobble bass, cheeky rave vocal stabs and massive, reverb-laden beats. It sounds like the sort of record that will be greeted with rapturous cheers when dropped at up-coming summer festivals. Flipside "Despite" is an altogether deeper concoction, with classic dubstep rhythms and heavy dub bass being joined by spooky melodies and spitting electronics.

Review: White Peach frontliner, London's Lington lays down his widest document to date. Hard and clappy through and through, this is straight-up undiluted instrumental grime for club. "Informa" brings the wave factor with its swooning synths while the string-laced "Grand Line" is much harder on the rata-tat-tat factor. The title track takes the prize for its slow-marching drama and thunder-drums ghosting from the corners before quickly retreating. "Falcon 2" brings us to a wonderfully sleazy close with big purple-funk feels on the flabby synth leads. Ready for take off?
