Review: Bristol's Joker is on fire right now. Amid signing and slinging tracks from the likes of Sh?m, Sorrow and Asa, he's dealt out some outstanding tracks throughout the year. Tracks like these purple punch-ups... where no vibe or tempo is out of bounds. From the sleazy synthetic swoons of "G Shit" to the slower-motion Megadrive twinkles and sonic glitter of "Glass Hearts", it's like Joker's taken his palette, mixed the colours and painted a whole new scenery. Forward-thinking...

  1. Moodstream (OktoRed remix)
  2. Moodstream (The Eerier Child remix)
Review: The celebratory releases toasting 10 years of Motech have so far been hugely impressive, with the likes of Rob Hood, Luke Hess, Ken Ishii and Delta Funktionen all remixing label boss Franki Juncaj, better known as DJ 3000. Here we are treated to something a little different, with OktoRed and The Eerier Child commissioned to remix "Moodstream", one of the highlights from the recent Invisible Moods album. The results, pressed up on a delicious little 7", are endlessly intriguing: the electro-tinged OktoRed version bumps and bleeps in all the right places, while The Eerier Child tweak (exclusive to this release) veers into heads-down dubstep territory with creaking atmospherics and droning whooshes of sub bass that threaten to dislodge the needle from its groove. Limited edition business too - don't sleep!

  3. Liloo's Seduction
Review: Both an intriguing and very cool release on Hyperdub, Philly producer King Britt surfaces after a long absence with this new project that goes beyond his traditionally lush and funky nu-jazz and broken beat releases into a darker and chillier place. The Gary Numan-meets-Prince spank of "Chasing Rainbows" is a great starter, while the off-the-wall drum programming of "The Chase" and the filmic swathe of "Lilloo's Seduction" show a breadth of talent that can only come from being in the game for 15 years plus.

  2. Knowing Looks
Review: Returning to WNCL after his exuberant re-emergence last year, Knowing Looks doesn't hold back in testing the limits of the dancefloor. "Listen To My 45" is the kind of track specifically crafted to sit uneasily in your ears on first listen but in time the wildly disparate elements amass to a glorious cacophony of damaged, unconventional groove. "Ghost Baby" darts into action on an uptempo micro-house groove before adopting a deranged synth. By the time thick layers of percussion and amen breaks whip around that lead synth there's no doubt that you're listening to one of the most starkly original producers in operation at present.

Monster (12")
Cat: NMGR 001. Rel: 13 Apr 15
  1. Monster (5:11)
  2. Despite (5:38)
Review: Prolific South London producer Kromestar has been a celebrated name on the dubstep circuit for the best part of a decade, dropping acclaimed singles on a wide variety of labels, including Hotflush, Deep Medi and Dubstar. Here he debuts on the brand new Nebula Music Group imprint, delivering a veritable assault on the senses in the shape of "Monster" - all ragged, pulverizing wobble bass, cheeky rave vocal stabs and massive, reverb-laden beats. It sounds like the sort of record that will be greeted with rapturous cheers when dropped at up-coming summer festivals. Flipside "Despite" is an altogether deeper concoction, with classic dubstep rhythms and heavy dub bass being joined by spooky melodies and spitting electronics.

Cat: NMGR 003. Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. System Test (original mix) (5:58)
  2. 3-D (3:54)
Review: In the nine years since he first appeared on the scene, Kromestar has released a ridiculous amount of music, most of which is pretty darn good. He's scaled things back a bit this year, mind; amazingly, System Test is only his third 12" of the year. Sitting somewhere between classic dubstep, trap, 8-bit and grime, the title track features fuzzy, tumbling electronic lines, fizzing bleeps, deep space sci-fi synths, and, of course, the kind of sub that should make any bass-head go weak at the knees. Flipside "3-D" redresses the balance by emphasizing the sparkling electronic motifs and retro game melodies, though it's still a suitably sizeable floor-filler.

  1. The Progress (3:31)
  2. Devi (3:54)
Review: Launched earlier this year, Kromestar's freshly-minted label Library Music looked to the considered talents of one Daniel Scrilla for its debut transmission; the Tell Dem 12" set the bar high in terms of quality, forward thinking Electronic Bass Music. It's no wonder then, that Kromestar himself commits some fresh cuts for this second Library release then, with lead cut "The Progress" a ripe example that classicist dubstep still feels fresh and vital. On the flip, "Devi" comes across like a classic Deep Medi B-side, pairing flute melodies from a distant continent with a sense of space and some killer drum programming.

  4. Settle Down (Asa remix)
  5. Settle Down (Stumbleline remix)
Review: Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With "Qi" garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters "Xtatic Truth" appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. "Settle Down" combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track "Girl" speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

  4. Jawside - "Blurred Rain" (3:32)
Review: Instrumental grime pioneers Boxed stay fixed to the split artist approach on their second 12", scoring cuts from Logos, Iglew, Jawside and a Spooky & Boylan collaboration. For those unable to attend the regular Boxed dances throughout London and beyond, this is a great snapshot of some of the music that soundtracks them with collective co-founder Logos leading the charge. His "Marked 4 Death Gunman" flips the classic Slewdem crew Gunman riddim, adding his own hardcore twist with "Lullaby" from Gobstopper graduate Iglew offering a neat thrust between moments of calm and chaos. Spooky & Edgem Records artist Boylan trace a line between South and East London on "Peckham to Hackney" whilst Oxford-based newcomer Jawside closes out the 12? with hyper-effective angular dancefloor bomb "Blurred Rain."

  1. MMM - "MMM Meets Tshetsha Boys" (7:08)
  2. Old Apparatus - "Old Apparatus Meets Shangaan Electro" (4:00)
Review: Honest Jon's present the last twelve inch instalment of their impossibly varied Shangaan Shake remix project with the perma excellent MMM and Old Apparatus at the helm. Fiedel and Wiegand's take on the Tshetsha Boys is notable for two things: firstly it continues the duo's recent fascination with rhythms of a decidedly UK Funky nature (as executed with devastating effect on their recent Dex/Rio 12") and it further strengthens the impression Honest Jon's have given the commissioned artists a blank canvas to retain or toss as many elements of the source material as they deem fit. Thus recognisable snippets of the vocals remain alongside a brilliantly twisted treatment of the tinny melodics wrapped infinitely around butt slapping drum textures. Completely different in tone and execution, the elusive Old Apparatus invoke the spirit of Scratch Perry at his most intoxicatingly brilliant with a rusted, half stepping arrangement caked in all manner of feedback which serves to demonstrate how far reaching the project has been over the course of the 12" releases.

  1. Moritz Von Oswald Trio - "Restructure 2"
  2. Digital Mystikz - "Restructure 2 Rebuild"
Review: A taster for the trio's forthcoming third album, Horizontal Structure, this single sees Von Oswald and collaborators Max Loderbauer and Sasu Ripatti (aka Vladislav Delay) further explore the notion of merging dub techno with other, previously unconnected styles. "Restructure 2" is a swirling, atmospheric piece, its languid, low-tempo groove accompanied by some tastefully spacey guitar playing and mellow jazzy vibes. It's understated, studied and about as far removed from Maurizio's "Ploy" as one can get, but yet it still retains much of the same cavernous production sound. The choice of remixer, Mala, is also surprising as it eschews Von Oswald's techno habitat in favour of dubstep. That said, the Digital Mystikz producer has a credible string of releases for DMZ, Tectonic and Soul Jazz, and like the Basic Channel producer, fully understands the power of the bass. There is also some subtle referencing to the time that Van Oswald first rose to prominence through the use of 'Intelligent Techno'-era melodies and the ambient outro, but Mala's remix is all about the tumbling drums and tribal, swinging rhythms.

  4. Sirpixalot - "All In One VIP" (4:28)
Review: Few crews are doing it quite as well as Boxed. Tapping down a real root note in their grime/beats fusions, each EP (and each party they host) knows when to keep it deep and when to really slap it out silly. This beautiful contrast can often be found within one tune. "Mashman Riddim", for example, warms up with swooning wavey synth textures before dropping into a riff that lives up to its name. Elsewhere the ubiquitous Mr Mitch pays respect to Burial, JT The Goon dusts off his flutes for an alien-charming drama session that could score the sequel to Braveheart while Sir Pixalot returns to his Newham Generals-endorsed "All In One" with a VIP that really does slap us about silly.

Review: Hot on the heels of his ace new album Brand New Bangarang, comes this rather timely release on Scrub A Dub. Stretching out the bounciest bass this side of Babylon, it's an instant crowd smasher. Especially when Yellowman and Mr Williamz are letting loose with their lyrical dancehall fire. Fancy a slower, sexier jam? Head for "Ram Jam Slow Up". It's as smoochy as it is subby.

Review: Professor Nomine unleashes the third instalment of his new label and he's rolling in good company as Macabre Unit and Japanese grime MC Duff join him for the late night ride. Nomine's rhythms buzz with rolling energy - the electric waspy bass on "Grimy Tribe", the tripped reverse beats of "Game Over", the stark vocal rhythm of Duff on "World Of G". Macabre Unit takes us deeper into the swamp with the palpitating kicks of "Sound Boy" before getting all space-funk on "Red Stripe Riddim" and totally flipping the script on the squelched out bass twists of "Neurotik". Some truly futuristic stuff happening here...

Review: Mystic instrumentals from the south west area courtesy of Mr Mitch's irrepressible Gobstopper label. Odeko makes his EP debut with four future-focused adventures in the exciting fertile land between experimental grime and glistening, formula-free electronica. From the pulsating subs and wavy melodic twangs of "Setsuko" to the shimmering-but-mangled harp echoes of "Sugar Acid", very few parallels can be made bar, perhaps, Chinese grime aficionado Swimful. Far East by inspiration, far out by design, Odeko is on to something special here.

Review: The latest release from central Europe's prime dubstep/grime imprint MG77 is the blistering debut 12" from Hamburg's finest, Phokus; a producer who cut his teeth on the burgeoning drum 'n' bass scene before discovering grime and dubstep and seeing his true calling. It's obvious from the first squelch of synthesizer that the kid has styles unmatched in the scene - this is heavy hitting music, designed for maximum impact and with hooks that are destined to stay in your head for far too long. Phokus is joined on these two destructive tracks by Ruff Sqwad veterans Dirty Danger and Tinchy Stryder (rumoured to have recently signed with a major!) who spit the most dangerous rhymes we've heard for a long time. Tinchy's cut "Dem All Shot" is a neck-grabbing ride into South London's underbelly, with all the attitude you'd expect to come with it. Carried by Phokus's killer icy-cold production this is a tune guaranteed to tear up dancefloors from Brixton to Berlin and beyond. Flip over for the real sickness though, an anthem to Dirty Danger himself as he asserts to nay-sayers that they shouldn't call him anything but "Danger" - as if we'd dare? Destined to be a scene anthem this rounds up a perfect 12", and one of the heaviest debuts we've heard in years. Dangerous!

Review: Making the leap from 50 Weapons (RIP), German darkmonger Phon O makes the logical leap to Tectonic. And he does so with three barren break-based constructs: "Mercurial" is all about the deep space breakbeats and groaning high-end bass slurs, "U8 Phunk" carries classic electro elements in its synths while the au-natural snare rolls suggest more of a militant march, finally "Bell Blender" takes the bleak dynamics established throughout the previous tracks and repurposes them in a modern day jungle amen-shattering framework. The results are beyond satisfying.

Noisia's take on "Smack My Bitch" up has been doing the rounds for a while now, and sound all the better for being on vinyl, Alvin Risk's version of "Firestarter" includes some sizzling potty mouthed sonics, Zed's Dead's rub of "Breathe" twists the original riff into an entirely new melody while Major Lazer follow Noisia's technique and just add the essential sparkles. Review: A proper slice of history here: They Call Me Raptor (to use his full title) cooked these up over 10 years ago... Yet they still sound fresher than a lot of the competition today. Loosely swung, sample-rich and fearless in their drama and range, these will blow just as many minds now as they did when they first emerged on dub. Ranging from the eastern string badness of "Magic Circle" to the funk-riddled "Da Stooge" (which is more akin to hip-hop than grime), this really is premium gear. No formula adhered to, full character displayed - these are still ahead of their time now.
