Played by: Galletas Calientes
Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

Review: Man of many pseudonyms Natal Zaks brings his Central project to Dekmantel, with the first of a series of EPs entitled Political Dance. It's an expansive affair, with the Danish producer delivering a quintet of tracks that meld distinctive Detroit techno, early US deep house, broken beat and deep space ambient influences into attractive new shapes. Highlights abound, from the rolling, loved-up grooves of the starry "Keep Love On Me", and Motor City deep house shuffle of "Body Issue", to the horizontal bliss of "Longest Way Between Two Points", and tech-jazz swing of standout "This Is Hand". Impressive stuff, all told.

  4. H Ain’t Nothing But A Number (7:42)
Review: Natal Zaks is a talented chap. To date, he's released a large amount of very good material, under numerous pseudonyms, for a wide variety of labels. Here he returns to Dekmantel with the second part of the Political Dance series, under the now familiar Central guise. Just like its' predecessor, it's a deliciously positive, melodious and atmospheric affair. The brilliant "Detour King" sounds like Space Dimension Controller, Vincent Floyd and Boyd Jarvis jamming on Mars, while "Political Dance" is a deliciously loved-up journey into early New Jersey deep house, with some distinctively spacey flourishes to boot. Zaks also doffs a cap to ambient house era intelligent techno on the luscious "Convenient Departures".

  3. Nollendorf (7:42)
  4. Loitering (7:10)
Review: Berlin mainstay Hans Schaaf aka DJ Honesty appears next for Sebo K's Scenario imprint. On the A side we've got the smooth and sexy deepness of "Burning Again" which bumps away in groovy fashion. "Thursday" brings to mind early Chicago from the nineties on this emotive journey track perfect for the early evening shift. On the flip "Nollendorf" is probably the most uptempo offering bordering on the techno tip with its tight rhythm and cyclical melody. Finally "Loitering" is deep and dubby house that's best suited to the afterhours.

  1. Reflection (Maurice Fulton mix) (6:12)
  2. Bubbles Away (6:16)
  3. Swangzipani (6:05)
  4. Judge Not (5:05)
Review: Janette "Jnett" Pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of Melbourne, where she's been DJing for well over two decades. This Wildlife EP is her debut solo release, features the legend Maurice Fulton on co-production duties, and arrives on Running Back after first seeing release digitally through Bubbletease Communications earlier this year. Fulton delivers a solo mix of "Reflection" to open proceedings, adding a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. There's a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of "Swangzipani". Elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills; "Bubbles Away" is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while "Judge Not" wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

  4. Zozi Theme (5:47)
Review: In truth, most of 1080p's vinyl releases have extolled the virtues of a Mellow Vibe, though few have been quite as dreamy and picturesque as this debut EP from Sophie Sweetland's new DJ Zozi alias. While each of the four tracks makes its' dancefloor intentions clear, it's the typically Canadian dreaminess of the accompanying chords, melodies and textures that catches the ear. Throughout, there are plenty of nods to early British hardcore breakbeat (see the cheeky "Zozi Theme" and "Up (Slammin Vers)"), as well as early 808 State ("Mellow Vibe") and bouncy, cut-up deep house (the hugely enjoyable "Snow Globe"). As you'd expect from both producer and label, the whole thing is vibrant, colourful and decidedly loved-up

Review: It's been some two years since Paramida established Love On The Rocks. In that time, the label has put out some memorable material, including essential 12" singles from Telephones, Khidja and Fantastic Man. The time seems right, then, for Paramida to step up and deliver her first EP for the label. Tehran Bomb also marks the start of a new, occasional re-edit series. She begins with the intoxicating late night throb of "Beyond Katovl", where fluttering vocal samples and psychedelic electronics ride a bombastic, high-energy groove. It's a muscular affair, all told, but strangely intoxicating. Flipside "Ms Bombastic" sees Paramida reworking an early house workout, cleverly emphasizing the original track's surging percussion and killer bassline.

  4. Early Korn
Review: Christopher Rau's latest outing on Smallville - his sixth in total, including two albums - is a particularly jolly affair, boasting a quartet of tried-and-tested cuts. There's something extra-cheery about opener "Yamato", where jammed-out organ riffs combine perfectly with a darting synth bassline and unfussy drum machine hits. "Odd Regrets" is a sweatier deep house drum jam, while "Just For You" reinvents rave-era piano house for the bass music generation. Finally, "Early Korn" is a picturesque and hazy deep house jam full of tumbling melodies and chiming electronics. All four tracks are excellent, suggesting that this is an EP that may stay in your record box for a while.

  1. O'riginal Rude Boy (Tucillo mix) (7:05)
  2. Juicy Street (Mandar mix) (7:09)
Review: The fourth instalment in Djebali's Reworks series sees Tuccillo and Mandar offer their interpretations of the French producer's deep house treats. Tucillo's version of "Original Rude Boy" is particularly potent, with a bumpin', bouncin' groove influenced by classic garage underpinning drifting, dubby guitars, watery synth flourishes and occasional vocal samples. Mandar's remix of "Juicy Street" has a more obviously locked-in vibe, with a walking bassline combining expertly with thumping beats, cut-up samples and urgent groans. Both mixes have a "tried and tested" feel, suggesting that they'll do serious damage if dropped at the right time.

Review: 2015 has already been a productive year for Rhythm&Soul [sic], AKA Parisian deep house producer Joaquin Diaz. This 12" on fellow French studio buff Djebali's self-titled imprint is his fourth outing of the year to date. It's largely typical of the former Silver Network man's output, offering chunky, Chez Damier influenced grooves, warm, funk-influenced basslines and rich, evocative musical touches. The A-side boasts two contrasting versions of "Strings of Lies"; the rolling, head-nodding original, and a tougher, sleazier interpretation from Two Diggers. Flip for the bumpin' beats, hypnotic vocal stabs and undulating bass of "Stay True", and the intensive percussive power and drifting chords of "16 Jam Allstars".

Review: The new single by Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain is "Sittin' Here" taken from his last self titled album released last year. The original's spiritual Afro groove was sublime but gets some pretty sweet remixes by the likes of Boddhi Satva; whose rendition stays true to the original's vibe but injects it with another authenticity which is fantastic. The always impressive Atjazz gets onboard and provides his signature deepness to the track which is one of the highlights. On the flip another track from the album "Real Blues" gets a terrific remix by French powerhouse DJ Deep & Roman Poncet. Their exotic and powerful remix is reminiscent of their Sergie Rezza material and just sublime!

Review: You can always depend on Berlin imprint Mojuba for quality deepness. Sven Weisemann has been a longtime staple of the label and presents his new four tracker. "Interface Jitter" gets things off to a flying start with its catchy melody offset by a tough and shuffling rhythm. He then serves up some proper and utterly sublime early '90s ambient house stylings on "Sparkling". On the flip is "Motion Capture", getting back into the emotive deepness with smooth melodies, dark chords and nice splashes of dub chords for added drama. The dub version "Motion Beats" gets well funky by comparison!

Review: The last time we heard Fred P under his FP-Oner guise was for an album, the minimally named 5, which came out on Japan's powerful Mule Musiq stable. As such, FP-Oner returns with 6 for the same label, carrying a similar load of molecular deep house music coated in a distinctive sci-fi kinda feel. This is what Fred P does best; that is, constructing intricate patterns of sound and giving them a shape through house. In other words, each of these eight tunes tell a much more interesting story than the dancefloor and, instead, they force the listener to enter a world of its own, guided by airy, mystical synths and plenty of electronic manipulation. Excellent, as always, Mr P.

Review: Luke Vibert has made many great records over the years, but few are quite as well crafted as his 2004 debut album under the now familiar Kerrier District alias. Inspired by a mixture of Metro Area, Black Devil Disco Club, cheap synthesizers, early New Jersey garage, Italian house and, of course, classic disco, it remains a touchstone in the development of nu-disco. This timely reissue features freshly re-mastered versions of all ten tracks from the original album, plus the six tracks which made up 2006's Kerrier District 2 12". These include the loved-up, late '80s loveliness of "Ce Porte", the 808 cowbell and vocoder laden "Disco Nasty", and a typically eccentric Ceephax remix of "Sho U Rite".

Review: Panorama Bar resident and Ostgut Ton mainstay Virginia is back with a full length. Whether she's lending her fine vocal talents to home girl Steffi (who co-produced the album with fellow Dutch legends Dexter and Martyn) like she did on her Power of Anonymity album a couple of years ago (like on the fabulous "Yours") or getting behind the console herself to pump out some sweet grooves; she sure is versatile. Fierce For The Night is a fitting title, the dozen or so tracks on here are the perfect soundtrack to a long evening and morning experiencing her acclaimed residency and all inspired by the classic and timeless sounds of Chicago via NYC. Highlights include the sexy dancefloor drama of the mighty opener "Bally Linny", the Chaka Chan inspired boogie playground that is "Obstacle" or the emotional and bittersweet slow-mo pop of "Believe In Time" . Not to mention the high octane dancefloor bomb that is "Raverd"

  1. 816 To Nunhead (6:21)

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Amadeus sees it's catalogue graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead. Title track and aside, "816 To Nunhead," is tinged with what's left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It's a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, "I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever." What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, "78 To Stanley Bay," a tune built behind the every looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aseeli, '78 To Stanley Bay' tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

Review: Chicago area DJ and producer Mark Grusane has developed quite the reputation as a high grade selector and editor in the three decades he has been active. A former founder of the iconic Mr Peabody Records, Grusane is one of those elder statesmen of dance music culture who seemingly lives and breathes it. Stand Down is the inaugural release on Grusane's eponymous label and sees him offer yet another extension of himself, diving into the realm of Early 90's style Chicago track music. There is a vibrancy and urgency to these four cuts that breathes this era of the Windy city's house heritage in a manner that can only be executed by someone that lived through it. One of those records that will never leave your bag.

  1. Freedom

  3. Soft Play
  4. Freedom (Lukas remix)
Review: From the label: J Morrison smashed it with his debut track on Maximum Joy pt. 1, the highly addictive deep house cut 'Some Fella'. This mid tempo Afro-house track had that rare combination of being super deep - but with the power to rock any dance floor. The Freedom EP, J Morrison's first Full EP release is the same, and more. The lead track calls up a looped and filtered afrobeat sample that just keeps on giving. Reminiscent of Cottam's early work, and sure to be a hit in the sunshine of a festival stage or a dark club. "Stay High" is more driving, tribal, druggy affair that reminds us Peace Division in their prime. Late night heads down dance floor vibes, with a killer vocal sample that creates real magic. "Soft Play" is a deeper track and just like 'Some Fella' the arrangement and choice of samples merge create another floor friendly that will be a useful tool for a wide range of DJs. Alfresco Disco co-founder Lukas steps up for remix duties and flips the samples of Freedom for a more choppy, chicago style bumping house track - which rounds off the E.P rather nicely we think. We hope you think so too!

Review: After 19 years in the game, techno veteran Jens "Lowtec" Kuhn is still going strong. While he's recently been in a nostalgic mood - as reissues of early material prove - Kuhn is still capable of producing fresh, high quality material. There's much to enjoy about this first EP for new Malmo label Blundar, from the loud tape hiss, spooky melodies and weirdo ambient dub intent of "Track 2", to the moody, early Autechre throb of Skam-ish closer "Track 4". Dancefloor-minded thrills come in the shape of hypnotic opener "Track 1" - all unsettling, one-note chords, restless rhythms and distant electronics - and the hard-to-pigeonhole madness of the schizophrenic "Track 3".

Review: Grrr - the gnarly Marcus Mixx returns to New York's Skylaxx label, and we're just so happy to hear the man back in action. The Chicago house producer is a bit of a legend in our eyes, and his decision to stay as underground as possible over all these years - his first productions dating back to 1987 - cannot go unnoticed. Home Is Where The House Is will, for now, consist of two parts, and this first chapter contains three different but equally nutty Mixx specials for the open-minded house DJ. Ranging from broken, diluted deep house, through to jarring old-school acid, and funked-out chugginess, this is house hit of the week for us. We can't wait for volume 2.

  3. Work That Shit (Steaward dub)
  4. Track For Aya
Review: Since launching with an EP from co-founder DJ Steaw, Rennes outpost Rutilance Recordings has steered a course through the Deep House waters that doffs it's cap to both the classic sounds of French house and the deepness of Kerri Chandler. Their fifth release casts the spotlight on Lyon and budding production talent Fabrizio Ortella whose Mad In Lyon EP falls snugly into Rutilance's defined aesthetic. Lead track "Reflex" sets the tone, with classy pads oozing out over some indecipherable field recordings and snappy drum programming, whilst "X Rated" ups the energy and heads into classic groove territory augmented by little vocal samples that you can guess the tone of from the title. Steaward opens the flip with a ghetto flecked dub of "Work That Shit" which shows his production confidence right now, whilst "Track For Aya" rounds out the release on a more chunky house vibe.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Australia is known for its Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, the vast desert wilderness and unique animal species including kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses; but is also known for its well-crafted music output and deep love for optimistic sensual tunes. This is the case here with the first release of a mysterious project called Ponzu Island, there is absolutely no info available on the artist, so let your ears judge without prejudice. His first effort comes in the form of a 3 track EP including "Super Koto", "Ponzu Beach" and "Ponzu Logic", they sound like if Morgan Geist and Todd Terje took some acid and locked themselves in a room with a sea view, a synth, and a computer. Welcome to Ponzu Island.

To complete the EP the label counted with Andras Fox, another Aussie who has already gained much respect for his simply-perfect micro house productions (btw don't miss his live set if you ever have the chance). Andras revisits the track "Super Koto" in the form of an extended mix with a slower bpm and his magic touch here and there. On the flip side Apersonal's local producer Trujillo does his usual thing remixing "Ponzu Logic", closing the EP into a deep and darker territory. By now you will be in the middle in the desert asking yourself how you got there..

Broke EP (hand-stamped 12" repress)
Cat: OFFICE 03. Rel: 30 May 16
  1. Mehris Groove
  2. Broke
  3. Im Sumpf
Review: A man who knows a thing or two about getting deep, Christopher Rau gives Office their third release and he's got plenty of soul-enriched goodies to impart from up-for-it club tackle to strung-out mellow explorations. "Mehris Groove" is centred around a gentle chord hook and a rolling tumble of percussion with an organic lilt to it. It's simple and effective like all the best Rau tracks are. "Broke" is more downtempo yet still marches forth with a danceable purpose, despite the best efforts of the plaintive Rhodes notes to quell the kinesis of the track. "Im Sumpf" heads off into experimental territory with an intricate arrangement of distant sound and melody as warm and inviting as it is out-there.

Review: House/Techno legend Orlando Voorn is next up on California's Roundabout Sounds label. This vinyl only release contains 3 tracks, each with it's distinct flavor and time/place on the dancefloor. You may know by now the quality to expect from Roundabout Sounds...and this EP keeps the bar raised high. This is the 15th installment of Roundabout Sounds that's run by Joe 'Babylon' Marougi, co-founder of Plug Research back in 1994.
