  1. S80 & Overture - "What's Up" (6:57)
  2. Kid Mark - "Got To Know" (7:38)

  4. Moralez & House of Kotu - "Suffer" (5:24)
  5. Love Island - "A Feelin" (5:38)
Review: Paris' Skylax (run by none other than Hardrock Striker) serves up some wonderful throwback house sounds on A Fistful Of Wax 3. First up Belarus' favourite sons S80 & Overture present "What's Up" while also on the A side is the rather Summer Of Love sounding "Got To Know" by Kid Mark with its sampled diva vocals, swing fuelled rhythms and hands in the air house chords really doing it. On the flip Rosenhaft's "CCMF" has that classic Frankie Knuckles vibe happening, as does Love Island's "A Feelin'" which takes you all the way back to '92 very convincingly indeed.

  3. Alone (8:19)
  4. Real (5:23)
Review: Aussie deep house producer Jordon Alexander has enjoyed a successful 2015, delivering a pair of deliciously woozy and evocative - yet pleasingly floor-friendly - EPs on Collect-Call and 1080p. Here, he rounds of the year with another sumptuous selection of tracks that should please anyone who likes their deep house warm, dubby and trippy. Both "Happiness" and "Orange County" make great use of dreamy, delay-laden vocal samples, placing them atop effortlessly tactile grooves and toasty chords. He subtly increases the tempo on the densely percussive but decidedly hazy "Alone", before delivering more horizontal, fireside deepness in the shape of "Real".

  4. I Don't Need U (4:57)
Review: House reissue label Mint Condition landed with a bang late last year, delivering a 12" that accompanied Pepe Bradock's peerless remix of Iz & Diz's 2002 classic "Mouth" with two previously unheard reworks from the eccentric French producer. Here they offer a re-mastered re-press of Techno Soul's sought-after 1992 EP, Expectations. Originally released on obscure Detroit label A.I.F Records, the title track boasts stronger UK influences - dub style sub-bass, breakbeat style house rhythms, and so on - then many Motor City productions of the period. Flipside "Flow With Me" sits somewhere between pitched-down Detroit techno and the smooth deep house of New Jersey producers such as Ben Cenac, while closer "I Need U" is a jaunty chunk of spacey deep house funk.

  3. I Get Deep (original mix) (9:36)
  4. I Get Deep (accapella) (4:03)
Review: "I get deep, I get deep, I get deeper..." It's a sad by product of sample culture that Roland Clarke's 2000 house burner "I Get Deep" is not as well known as the tracks that have subsequently jacked his vocal, both credited and uncredited. For anyone wishing to strengthen their collection with US vocal house, this repress of the original Shelter release is a must have. All four versions of the track are prime examples of US deep house at its bumping best, though the combination of Clarke's booming vocals and jazz licked production from Shelter duo Freddy Sanon and Paul Simpson is very hard to top!

Review: Founded in 2014 by the fantastic French-producer S3A, this release follows releases by Byron The Aquarius, Neue Grafik, Cuthead and Henry L with an absolutely killer start to 2017. Vienna's Sam IRL is abck with more sultry deep house sounds on the Melting Memories EP. The Sampling As An Art imprint continues its ascension as one of the finest new labels in highly intelligent dancefloor sounds. The title track is testament to this, "Forward (Interlude)" goes for some dusty hip
-hop dopeness and "Suave" merges sensibilites of both previous tracks wonderfully much like the Money $ex crew out of Berlin can. Final track "Calm" sounds vaguely familiar too: think Raw Cuts era Motor City Drum Ensemble.. and that's a compliment!

  2. I Want To Believe (feat EDMX) (5:22)
  3. Just Play The Music (4:33)
Review: Trevor Jackson tends to do things differently, so the recent announcement of nine EPs of previously unheard Playgroup material, to be released in the space of nine weeks, should have come as little surprise. Opener "Move My Body" is particularly strong, and features sampled Robert Owens vocals rising and falling over a classic, late '80s Chicago house groove. There's a similar retro-futurist feel to the more acid-flecked Ed DMX collaboration "I Want To Believe", while "Play The Music" combines similar influences with a touch of NYC proto-house.

  3. Live At The Funhouse (5:04)
Review: After a fine start that featured an EDMX collaboration, the Previously Unreleased series of Playgroup 12"s from Trevor Jackson returns with a second edition. Echoing the diverse nature of the classic Playgroup album, there is plenty of stylistic swerves in the three tracks that feature here. Up top, "Doin' It Right" is a low-slung slab of disco chug with a most devious arpeggio conducting proceedings. On the B-side, "Flyte Mode" is a short proto house piece that would work well as an opening track on a DJ mix whilst "Live At The Funhouse" is a fizzing electro DJ tool.

  1. What's Happening? (12:31)
  2. Shadowplay Dub #2 (6:22)
  3. Total Collapse (feat Mike Z) (3:52)
Review: Yes, yes. Here's the fourth chapter of Trevor Jackson's Playgroup series, his alias that dates back to the early '00s when house, electro and techno were being mashed up without too many concerns over genres, subgenres or categories. "What's Happening", for example, takes the best from all three strains of dance music, where a metallic percussion groove pulls together a sea of washed-out atmospherics that and slow-burning dub bass tones; "Shadowplay Dub#2", as the game suggests, is an industrial dub stepper in a similar kind of style to the African Head Charge material on On-U Sound, and "Total Collapse" breaks the acid gear out in this shimmering techno abstraction with distinct cold waves running through all of it. Warmly recommended unreleased material, right here.

  1. Boiler Room Teaser (7:58)
  2. You Stepped Right Into My Life (K Hand re-edit) (6:56)
  3. Live (4:41)
Review: Detroit techno veteran Kelli Hand returns to action with her first EP of original productions since 2015. More impressively, it's the first volume in her Project series since the tail end of the 1990s (though, as nerds will point out, Project 5 was reissued in 2014). A-side "Boiler Room Teaser" feels like a product of the late 1990s, combining as it does no-nonsense Motor City techno drums and growling, razor-sharp riffs. There's a similarly dark, booming, warehouse-friendly feel to "K.Hand Live", a house/techno hybrid full of weighty kick drums and sparkling, spacey electronics. Curiously, the EP's other track - "You Stepped Right (K.Hand Re-Edit)" - is a pitched up, slightly beefed up rework of Melba Moore disco classic "You Stepped Into My Life".

  3. Get Lit (4:42)
Review: Joining DJ Relationship Goals, DJ Longdick, DJ Windows XP, DJ Playstation and DJ Boring on the recently-ignited, insatiably burning E-Beamz imprint, DJ Swagger lays down an all-corner-covering fusion session the flips mischievously from thumping house jam "Lost" to the sci-fi b-boy broken jam "Ones N Twos" at the flick of switch. "Get Lit" joins the dots between the two in true lo-fi glory as a weirded out vocal loop grumbles beneath a series of clunky filtered layers that open out majestically as the track progresses. Beam us up Swagger.

Review: Tobias Holzel and Daniel Napolitano's Rough stable cook up another special vinyl only V/A ensemble and the results are every bit as delicious as you'd expect. Sinnmusik's Georgi Barrel takes the first bite with a chugging Theo Parrish style groove washed in minor key mysticism. Dub Jamz continue their Tuff Jam mission with the UKG 4x4 flavoured "Pushin'" while Thomas strips us right back to the root notes with a jazzy heads-down odyssey. Finally Rough's latest family member Maximilijan continues to prove his position with a reflective, piano tinkling groove that blushes with raw breakbeat charm. A cut above.

  1. Saturday Morning (Headache mix) (5:42)
  2. Stash (5:15)
  3. Tragic Ending (7:54)
  4. That Old Feeling (5:45)
Review: David Willenberger aka TRP first appeared on the scene with an EP for London's Lobster Theremin earlier this year, and we've been awaiting more of his brittle, dusty house flakes impatiently. He's here courtesy of Shall Not Fade, a young and vibrant independent with a lot confidence and flair about the way they release music, and if you're looking for some sketchy, utterly analog house music then you've come to the right spot. "Saturday Morning (Headache Mix)" is a warm, placid house gem with driving piano keys at its core; "Stash" is deeper, moodier and unleashes rolling bassline over its percussion; "Tragic Ending" is the off-kilter nugget for those wanting something a little looser; and "That Old Feeling" is a mesmerising house abstraction with an aqueous breeze floating through its mix. A quality bunch of outsider house tools.

  1. Posthuman - "Feel The Heat" (9:19)
  2. The Model - "Get Up" (6:39)
Review: Polybius Trax is the subsidiary label of Clasicos Del Ruido, both part of a conglomerate that've taken the last few years by storm. Whether it's malicious acid, electro-driven house, or even industrial techno, there is little that this imprint has done wrong since its first records began to appear on our shelves. The Polybius chapter is best known for the Moog Your Body series but, as of recent, new, collaborative 12"s have begun to surface from its underbelly. East London's Posthuman brothers appear alongside Romania's The Model, and the results are bountiful. The former's "Feel The Heat" is a dirty, no nonsense club destroyer backed by a powerful infusion of gargling bass tones, while the latter's "Get Up" brings us back to '89 - a rave-fuelled house bomb for the heads.

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Review: Groove twitcher Murphy joins the dots between ornithology and house with the immaculate subtly tripped-out "Watching Birds" EP. "Next Saturday" shakes its tail feather well into the future with a hypnotic loopy vox sample and a robust beat and strange glitchy elements deep in the background. The title track looks back to the Chicago foundations with a breezy synth coating while "Big Babool" is an all-out eerie, bumpy thumper that wouldn't have gone amiss on MFF back in the era. Those hungry for more of a percussive, slightly broken punch should jump on the otherworldly textured "Impending Accident". Far out.

Review: Given his prolific nature, it's perhaps surprising to find that 5 is actually Medhi Djebali's debut album. The title was apparently chosen as both a nod to the fifth anniversary of his self-titled label, and as a reflection of the number of months it took the Parisian to record it. As you might expect, it's an enjoyable collection of largely club-friendly cuts, with Djebali offering nods towards Robsoul style tech-house ("Nineties Playground", "Mister Bastard"), spacey ambience ("Heartgroover", "The Other Night"), acid (the funk-fuelled "D.B Cooper", "God's Dreams"), and warm, early morning deep house ("Seven Blessings", "Ideal Dawn"). To round things off, he also includes a head-nodding chunk of dreamy instrumental hip-hop (John Dimas collaboration "Suzaku").
