Review: In recent years, L.A-based Zane "SFV Acid" Reynolds has concentrated on making albums. Here he returns to vinyl for the first time in four years, serving up eight tracks stretched across a 12" and 10". There's much to admire, from the broken techno-meets-Moon B loveliness of "French Deimar", and classic tech-jazz of "Deep", to the spacey ambient experimentalism of "Dickinsdontile", and punchy electro of "Wenegalam". While much of the EP is intergalactic in ethos, he's more than capable of banging it hard, as the intense acid rush of "Extrakrizzbeat" neatly proves.

Review: With this 12" from hyped deep house duo Mount Liberation Unlimited, Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space label notches up a quarter-century of releases. Fittingly, it's rather special. "(Eerie) For Your Love" is particularly potent, with the duo layering up line after line of synthesizer sweetness atop a jazzy and tactile groove. It's positive, atmospheric and thoroughly beguiling, with nods towards classic Floating Points and the 'scandolearic' nu-disco of Prins Thomas's Full Pupp label. The duo's love of loose and snappy drum machine percussion comes to the fore on the similarly blissful and Balearic B-side, "Maiden Voyage", which is every bit as delightful as its' predecessor.

Review: Tissu's debut for Mork last year was a refreshing bit of outsider techno, and that EP has had us waiting on some more material from the producer. London's Lobster Theremin seems like a perfect home to this calibre of artist and his wayward sound fits into the label's catalogue like hand in glove. "Space Loop" perfectly encapsulates the loose roll of analogue beats and hazy melodies within its groove, but "RV Jam" is even more spectacular thanks to its punchy cascade of synths and collapsing drum machine hits. On the flip, "Filter (dub)" is still loose and chimerical, but Tissu manages to weave a tight, mechanical groove that seems to hold everything else in place - a wild and untamed plane from a distant planet.

  1. Sneak Attack (10:14)
  2. Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

Review: Church has certainly grown into one of London's most dependable house music outlets these past few years across their various interlinked label divisions. The emergence of Laurence Guy is testament to that - last year he debuted on Church with the well-received Kojak EP, and has gone on to prove his worth across a number of 12" releases and V/A contributions. Bamboo sees him back in the Church fold for their ninth White Label release and it's a confident four-track display of measured deep house. From the warbling melodies of the title track to the Smallville stylings of "Knotweed" and "Lotus", Guy is clearly improving with each release!

Review: Ahead of the release of his sophomore solo full-length on Honest Jon's, the much lauded London imprint has served up this three-track teaser 12". Predictably, Mosse is in fine form, with A-side "Chilazon 1" offering a near perfect fusion of acid house wiggle, German techno hypnotism, and trippy, late night funk. "Chilazon II" offers a wilder, weirder take on the same track, with Mosse mixing up loose, broken techno rhythms, dub techno style distortion, and razor-sharp cymbal hits. Finally, the Workshop head honcho serves of "Lanthanum", where off-kilter drum machine rhythms are joined by spaced-out percussion hits, occasional dub-flecked riffs, and copious amounts of tape delay.

Review: Back in 2014, Patrice Scott gathered together a quartet of tracks from friends in the house and techno community and whacked them out under the Genesis Tracks banner. This belated follow-up repeats the same recipe for success, once again showcasing four cuts from big-hitting artists. Scott steps up first with the swirling, dreamy, intergalactic deep house bliss of "Seasons Change", before boogie revivalist Reggie Dokes joins the dots between analogue deep house and synth-funk on the sublime "The Baptism". Flip for the metronomic, riff-heavy deep house pulse of "Gossamar" by Eric Cloutier, and a killer, up-tempo analogue deep house jam from the hugely talented Kai Alce.

Review: Since making his debut on Wax Classic back in 2012, Nick Beringer has been label surfing, delivering high quality deep house for the likes of Skylax, Made Fresh Daily and, most recently, Taverna Tracks. Second Floor marks his return to Wax Classic, and includes a quintet of impressive cuts. The woozy chords, rolling grooves and chunky analogue bass of "57th Corner" kicks things off, before the Berlin-based producer goes all DJ Sneak with the bombastic beats, dubbed-out chords and acid bass of "Urban Canyon". Flip for the smooth, bass-heavy swing of "Rotation", the pitched-down, Adriatic afternoon laziness of "Reifenrittberger", and the sun-kissed soulfulness of "Sylvia Is Blessed".

  3. Get Down (Bayacou mix - Atjazz tweak) (6:44)
Review: Ezel's Dominican roots shine brightly in his personal strain of house music, and while the producer hasn't released a great deal of EPs since his debut back in 2008, he has produced an impressive amount of remixes, many of them for established artists like Osunlade and Deetron. Here he is on the unstoppable Local Talk with the sweet and sensual "Get Down", a tune that would definitely be roofed under the classic 'soulful' sound due to its sleek groove and heartfelt vocals. On the B-side, Ezel himself remixes the tune by stripping the lyrics down and working the groove into a more fast and humble sort of house framework, and Bayacou's version adds a fine layer of extra melodies to the mix that make this cut a pleasure to mix into just about anything.

Review: The perennially-search-engine-unfriendly Bristol beatman Admin makes his Boogie Cafe debut with this trio of beautifully loose jazz-tinted grooves. Both "Flute Loops" and "Drifting Away" err more on the house side of the spectrum with relaxed, lo-fi drums and humming pads and harmonics that you'd expect to find on Kompakt or perhaps Drumpoet. For an even freer funk sensation jump on "No Problemo". A sprightly jazz breakbeat funk chunklet, if you're aware of Farina's Mushroom Jazz series then you'll be all over this. File in your 'to play' tray.

Review: Dave Aju, Alland Byallo, Kenneth Scott and Marc Smith joined together as KAMM, resulting in a mini-album called Kick Drunk Love for marcel Vogel's Amsterdam based label Intimate Friends.iDescribed in a press release as being influenced by the artists' "love of early '90s MoWax era laid-back beats," it features Barrite on lead vocals (with Byallo and Scott also contributing vocals), Smith on guitar, Byallo on trumpet and Scott on Moog synth. There's a couple guest appearances as well: Damian Schwartz plays some bass on "Sidewalks" and Eureka provides "a hell of a [vacuum] rev" on "Stage Left."

Here we have a remix EP of three of their cuts, the first in the form of a break-ridden deep house ride from Central Toast on "Peanut Butter & Jam", the second another break-heavy house experiment by Manmade Distanza on "Hoop Dreams", and finally a mesmeric sort of tribal house nugget by DJ Sports Emotional on "Baaam". 1. COOL Band - "Jam 1" (3:34)

Review: While a lot of PPU's time is spent unearthing, reviving and liberating classic boogie, disco, funk and soul from the 80s and 90s, it's also home to troves of authentic grooves tailored in contemporary times... And long-standing label fam Benedek is one of the most consistent forces behind it all. The excellently titled C.O.O.L Band and Manzanem are two of his latest guises; the former is a real Sunday afternoon lazy vibe, like an electro boogie record on at half speed with thundering weight on the powerful kicks while the latter takes us deeper into the late 80s with a Mr Fingers' style trip into primordial house music. Pure synth odysseys, the pair of them.

Review: Last year's Youth Stand Up! album, created through collaboration between leading lights of Glasgow's leftfield club scene and youth music projects in Ghana and Belize, was one of the most interesting and vibrant cultural fusions of our time. This 12" contains fresh reworks of tracks from that set. First, Optimo man JD Twitch delivers a bewitching, sub-heavy take on "Come With Me", before Auntie Flo turns "Beat The Drum" into a sweaty, stretched-out chunk of analogue/tropical fusion. Flip for a fantastically percussive, off-beat acid-meets-Afro-techno rendition of "Tsoma" by Midland, as well as General Ludd's sparse, Afro-acid re-make of "Tuteme Meets Tafo Antome At 58 Ft".

Welcoming another new addition to their brigade of beat butchers, it's the Dutch producer and DJ known as Larry de Kat who drops a fine feline selection for his Purrr-versions EP . Four killer tracks which showcase his diversity and perversity in the studio . There's no doubt that this selection will do the damage on the dance floor and bring even more attention to this undeniable talent.

Review: Sahko are clearly fans of the art-rock meets ambient techno stylings of "Heaven Taste" by early '90s British troupe No-Man. Last month the iconic Finnish label put out a 12" featuring a remix from long term Sahko associate Jimi Tenor alongside an edit from No Man's own Steve Wilson. Here we find three other artists with links to Sahko (Tin Man, Nasty Boy, Bastien Wegner) take the track down their own distinct paths. Tin Man is on sublime form with his opening take, teasing out those dreamy acid lines in a manner we have become accustomed to, whilst Italian artist Nasty Boy opts for a more restrained classicist deep house approach. Bastien Wegner closes out the 12" with a more abstract remix that plays out as a suite of three distinct movements.

Review:  Leigh Morgan is one of the three points on the Fancy Human power triangle (he's one of three label heads) and also has a strong reputation for delivering deep house on other labels too. Here he whips up three new sizzlers for our listening pleasure - the looped, mid pace back and forth grooves of "Dilly Of A Pickle", the distorted and woozy late 80s ecstasy vibes of "Pie On The Sly" and the malfunctioning stop/start electronics of "Almost Champion". The opener also gets a "Dubfloor remix" by Chocky, who turns in a warm and seductive late night '90s house joint.

Illusion Dust is a powerful bass driven House banger, with a serious deep as you can get remix from Sheffield's wizard Tommy Vicari Jnr. Review: Number 14th comes with some serious grooves by a new project of one of the first artist of the label... Salt is a perfect combination of old school House vibes and modern grooves. "Franck White" is a timeless track with a rising melody that drives you until the end and beyond. "Sedould" goes into another path with a never ending groove infected by some killer vocals. On the B side, Rhythm&Soul's remix of "Franck White". Taking the track into another dimension with tight beats and a modern House mood. A long and catchy rework. Another release made to shake your legs on the dance floor...

Avocado Dreams (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: KANN 27. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Leafar Legov - "Cenote" (8:58)
  2. Bender - "Think Green" (5:09)
  3. Mary Yalex - "Bellflowers & Unicorn" (8:52)
  4. Matt Karmil - "Love Letter" (5:00)
Review: Throughout Kann Records' eight-year history, many of the label's most impressive 12" singles have been "split EPs", featuring tracks from a number of artists. Avocado Dreams, their latest missive in this format, is another corker. Giegling associate Leafar Legov gets things going with yawning, gently stretching deep house shuffle of "Cenote", before Bender fuses sinewy strings, clipped guitar loops and Steve Hillage style solos on the hypnotic "Think Green". Mary Yalex raises the tempo - and temperature - a little on the flip with the deep and shuffling house of "Bellflowers + Unicorn" (check the subtle steel drum melodies), while Matt Karmil further enhances his rising reputation with the crackly, ultra-deep house melancholy of "Love Letter".

  3. Pittsburgh Track Authority - "Oculus Sinister" (6:47)
  4. Kuniyuki - "A Night In SA" (7:45)
Review: The Freerange label ain't messing about; this fourth chapter of their 20th anniversary release is just as on-point as the previous three releases, and no less of a body mover. "Songs Without Words" by Milton Jackson is one of those house anthems you imagine looking out into the night sea on a warm summer night, full of beautiful chords and a thick pulse of a beat; Kito Jempere comes through with a similarly breezy tech-house tool on "Finland Express". On the B-side, the great Pittsburgh Track Authority speeds up the pace with the shuffling, intergalactic groove of "Oculus Sinister", and "A Night In SA" by Kuniyuki offers something a little different, a smoother, more jazzy construction with a broken beat feel that fits mighty well with us.

  1. Rhythm Algorithm (8:23)
  2. Trance Sexual (6:47)
  3. Fittin' & Turnin' (All Day) (5:41)
Review: While Fantastic Man's material has been in and out of our shelves since 2011, it was this year's LP for Paris' Antinote that really grabbed our attention. "Rhythm Algorithm" for Superconscious follows a similarly wacked-out vision of house, and the title track itself is a stunning bullet made of ricocheting percussion and spectral melodies. "Trance Sexual" is a bumping, Chicago-leaning house banger that'll mix like perfection into just about anything, whereas "Fittin' & Turnin' (All Day)" is deconstructed by comparison, a hypnotic and highly frenetic sort of house jacker that rings and twists frantically from start to finish. Class.
