  3. Serengeti Run (Natureboy Lost Track '94) (6:19)
Review: Bristolian exile DJ Nature - or, as he was known in the West Country for many years, Wild Bunch man DJ Milo - has previously proved adept at creating dusty, low-slung deep house for labels such as Golf Channel Recordings. "LF" sees him following a similar blueprint. It's available in two contrasting forms; "Mix 1" features a tasty mix of sleepy chords, sleazy vocal samples and swinging, straight-to-tape style deep house beats, while "Mix 2" is focused around a looped, late night motif and more metronomic percussion. On the flip, you'll find a genuine slice of history in the shape of "Serengeti Run". Recorded in 1994 during the Bristolian's time producing house as Nature Boy, it's deep, woozy, hazy, and undeniably beautiful in an understated way.

  1. For Men (7:34)
  2. For Beat's (2:59)
  3. For Woman (7:18)
  4. For Sex (6:20)
Review: In the 21 years since Delicious Inc's "Eau De Chante" first slipped out on Underground Music Movement (U.M.M), the E.P has become an in-demand item amongst house DJs. This reissue, then, is very welcome. Stripped-back, bumpin' and bass-heavy, it sits somewhere between the masculine funk of Murk, the muscular thump of Sound Factory-era Junior Vasquez, and the rolling swing of Chicago house. The sassy, spoken female vocal comes to the fore on "Eau De Chante (For Men)" and "Eu De Chante (For Sex)", the latter of which is built around woozy loops and a more thrusting, analogue-sounding bassline. There's also a killer "For Beats" version for those DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

  1. Battery Acid (7:11)
  2. Mr. Heard (6:41)
  3. Battery Acid (dub edit) (6:48)
Review: Few house producers are quite as prolific as Glenn Underground. Since launching his career way back in 1992, the Windy City legend has released well over a century of 12" singles. Savior of Chicago is his sixth E.P this year alone, and begins with the snappy drum machine handclaps, psychedelic TB-303 lines and gently dreamy chords of peak-time thumper "Battery Acid". He pays tribute to old friend and fellow Chi-town legend Larry Heard on the deep, melodious and evocative "Mr Heard", before once again diving into Phuture territory with a rugged, wild and full-throttle Dub Edit of opener "Battery Acid". While he rarely fails to impress, Savior of Chicago is undoubtedly GU's most club-ready 12" for some time.

Review: Oh! It's Chicago's Glenn Underground with a new Strictly Jazz Unit scorcher! The man is a legend, both in stature and musical abilities, and "Jaz Love" is as Underground as you can possibly get thanks to that sweet groove, playful harmonics and sun-kissed hook. "Leaving Today" is every bit as soulful and filled with joy, a true-school house beauty with an instantly hummable rhythm, whereas "Jisco Jazz" goes for the nu-disco approach thanks to its circling bassline and fall-in-love melodies - a sublime reinterpretation of a disco classic!

  3. DJ Pegasuz & FTPup - "Dalmation Dreams" (4:31)
  4. Fede Lng - "XX" (4:39)
Review: Axe On Trax's little sibling, the white-label spawn by the name of Axe Traxx, is starting to grow into a rather impressive little imprint thanks to releases from Sonderr and Italy's Die Roh. The third instalment is a collaborative affair from a series of emerging house deviants and, as per usual, this is is mightily limited and even a little bit tipped! Dusty house sensations are given off by Ruff&Stax's "Brando"; "James Brown" from Kid Mark is a stomping, chord-heavy analog belter; DJ Pegasuz and FTPup deliver a fast-paced, raw-as-hell house killer in the same style as Dance Mania 12"s from the late 90s, and "XX" by Fede Lng is simply a nasty piece of work in all senses of the phrase - dark, squelching, distorted, and just the right amount of funky. TOP 12!

Cat: TTT 047. Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. I'm Still Dizzy (9:01)
  2. I Man A Canary Bird (8:42)
Review: Call Super's various aliases are beginning to sound synonymous with The Trilogy Tapes' oddball flex, and we have to say that they are probably among our favourite house and techno releases of recent years. This time Elmo Crumb is is moniker, and the sounds are as a sparse and explorative as ever; the arrangement of the nine-minute bomb "I'm Still Dizzy" is deep and intricate, filled with spectral sounds that are constructed with a clean analogue sound that sounds almost organic in texture. "I Am A Canary Bird" is similarly loose, except that the beat is more driving here, wrapped in a noticeably more techno-like coating that is bound to make the perfect companion to all sorts of rave frivolities. Stellar 12" from TTT; on form, as always.

  1. Keep It Lit (8:17)
  2. BB 1-2 (6:32)
  3. We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play (6:59)
Review: Baba Stiltz isn't exactly the first name you'd associate to Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes, but the reality is that the producer's shady strain of deep house works perfectly well with the incorrigibly leftfield label. Moreover, Bankhead has never been one to shy away from anything that he likes, so it would be unfair to limit this incredible imprint to techno or noise. "Keep It Lit" kicks off with a warm, gloriously funky little house groove that reminds us of DJ Nature or even Kyle Hall's early productions whereas, on the flip, "BB 1-2" edges closer to typical TTT territories thanks to its deranged vocal samples and broken arrangement. "We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play" is similarly twisted, and verging towards just the right kind of dark and eerie. This is a fine, three-piece house EP with a hint of TTT's inimitable oddity. 5 stars.

  2. Tympanic Warfare
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

Review: Singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Rakei is a talented chap. Not content with pulling up trees under his given name, he's decided to debut a new alias via a killer new EP for Rhythm Section International. All four tracks are deliciously hazy, effortlessly soulful and hugely groovy, as Rakei deftly showcases his many talents. He begins with the Prince-tinged purple funk of "Change", before fusing clipped funk guitars, broken house beats and confident vocals on the superb "Like You Wanna". "Tolle" sees him slip further towards toasty, low-slung deep house territory, before he breaks up the beats and fires up the Rhodes on deliciously jazzy closer "Ligo".

  3. Nickodemus & Simbad - "BerlimBOOM" (4:57)
  4. Zeb - "Space Forest" (4:26)
Review: Brooklyn's Wonderwheel is kind of like an institution by now; a label which has been delivering high levels of quality since the early 00s, and who is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. In fact, the imprint has only managed to develop and nurture their tribalistic style of the years, and it's fair to say that they have successfully managed to create a Wonderwheel 'sound'; heavy, club-friendly deep house with subtle Afro nuances. This new EP, Turntables On Ipanema, is a collaborative effort by a series of familiar names: DJ G's wonderfully tropical house ballad "Samba De Terra" leads the 12", and is followed by Simbad's darker, more broken house groove called "Detroit De Janeiro", a perfect blurring of the sounds of the two American cities. Over on the B-side, "BerimBOOM" by Nickodemus and Simbad is a warm, beat-heavy deep house tune, and Zeb's "Space Forest" winds the tempo down to a sweet, mid-paced groove with magnificently dubby harmonies, and a balearic kinda feel.

Review: Given Aaron FIT Siegel's close link to Detroit's finest talents, we weren't expecting him to release a 12" by an artist such as Moscow's Oleg Buyanov, dubbed simply as OL. But, don't get us wrong, this is a great move for the label, and we're happy to see Siegel branching out into other domains. Also, it has to be said that OL's tunes have much in common with the Motor City's tradition, anyway. The lead tune "Lada Passenger" is a jazzy house experiment, a dance sketch with plenty of free-roaming harmonies and effects circling around it. On the flip, "Study Drum" has more in common with the typical deep house framework, and "Life Span" warms our winter chills with a deep, glowing bassline that you simply must test out at high volumes...

Review: Jesse Futerman's first appearance for Church feels like it was always meant to happen and, in fact, it's as if this artist has always been part of the London label. That's because his rugged house flex is exactly the sort of material that these guys have been pushing over the last few years, and "My Favourite Chant" provides the perfect analog house trip. "See Me Ride", however, is a slower, more placid sort of groove that allows more space for the myriad of gentle melodies emanating from every corner, but the flip-side's "Gem" heads back to the dance floor with utter ease, and makes for the perfect opening set track; Hidden Spheres provides the remix, a subtle modification of the original which focusses heavily on the tribal drums. A wonderful new Church bomb...

Review: Giammarco Orsini kicked off Heko Records last year with the first volume of Experiential Learning, and now he's back for round two following a brief spot on Elephant Moon earlier in the year. "Solar System Is Vital To The Planet" dominates the A side in a swinging, punchy style of techno that calls to mind the likes of Stephen Brown. "Life Goes On" on the flip however comes on with a housier demeanour, keeping the Detroit synth tones plush and the mood mellow. "Trees Dance" breaks away into a stripped back electro style that sits as a neat foil to the grooving 4/4 elsewhere on the EP.

Review: There's a lot to be said for club music that aims to both soothe the senses and move the feet. We can think of few better examples than "Some Song Teachers", the title track from this Public Possession collaboration between Cos/Mes member 5ive and label-hopping Swede Samo DJ. While underpinned by a sturdy, tactile rhythm track, it's the blissful electronics and undulating, rising and falling synthesizer melodies - new age influenced, but also intensely positive and mood-enhancing - that make the track so addictive. Flipside "Dilemma" is similarly smile inducing, offering a tasty twist on melodious, dusty deep house. It's nowhere near as striking as its' predecessor, but it's still a very fine track indeed.

Review: Stassy's Taverna Tracks has previously brought us the lines of Overall Music head honcho Hanfry Martinez, Greek DJ John Dimas and NYC's Alix Alvarez. It's now the turn of Canadian in Berlin Paolo Rocco, who has previously served up quality grooves on the likes of Real Tone and Rutilance. Feel the grove on "Missed My Step", a deep jam with a dusty break over its four to the floor groove and soulful keys. Berlin based Nick Beringer does a good job on the remix up next, injecting his signature 909 thump and sense of swing into proceedings. On the flip, the tough yet emotive, retro leaning house of "Metro 514" is somewhat reminiscent of Shed and "Booby Trap" (with Lessi S) goes for something more stripped back and functional on this rolling and reductionist groove.

Review: Sergio Moreira probably doesn't get enough sleep. Certainly, the sheer volume of tracks he releases suggests that he barely rests. Happily, the Spanish producer has the knack of consistently delivering strong EPs, as his latest outing for Slow Life deftly proves. He begins with the rising, stretched-out strings and bustling house rhythms of "The Truth", before fusing warm Rhodes chords, tech-jazz electronics and swinging broken beats on the impeccable "My Reality". Flip for "That Was Just A Dream", where toasty organ chords are underpinned by a bubbly tech-jazz groove, and the accompanying Indi Zone remix, which blasts the track into deep ambient space via glistening IDM.

  3. Time Tunnel (The Sphinx edit) (8:05)
  4. Time Tunnel (Roy Of The Ravers remix) (3:51)
Review: Bicep has long been fans of Brassica's brand of hard-to-define electronic music, so it's little surprise to see him delivering the latest single on their revitalized Feel My Bicep imprint. He begins with the tactile, four-in-the-morning hypnotism of "Time Tunnel", where spaced out electronics and cyclical riffs ride an ultra-deep, locked-in groove, before doffing a cap to vintage Meat Beat Manifesto and early Orbital on the thrilling "Wryders". On the flip you'll find two interpretations of "Time Tunnel": a warm, hazy and slightly more loved up edit by The Sphinx, and a thrusting, high-octane acid-meets-psychedelic techno assault from Roy of the Ravers.

Review: It's early days for DJ Loser, having just been snapped up for a split cassette release with Raw Ambassador in the recent past. Luckily, getting a spot on London's well-established Bliq label is a fine place to start, and the debutant producer turns out some confidently grubby house wares for their first spot on vinyl. "Your Eyes Were Telling Me That You Really Cared" is a woozy, infectious club track full of scuffed drum machines and low-rent synth flares, while "Untitled" has a much more abrasive palette on offer. "I've Got Dis (But I Can't Do It)" hits a similar vein of atmospheric jackery before Bliq regular Seixlack turns out a more densely packed remix.
