  3. The World In Action (7:36)
Review: Jamie Thinnes' Seasons was a strong staple of the west coast house scene at the turn of the millennium and the label was instrumental in launching the careers of legends like Cpen, Lance Desardi and Natural Rhythm whose Earhtomes has receive a renewed interest. It was in actual fact the parent label once in the beginning for the first ten releases of Seasons. Sublabel Seasons Limited on the other hand launched around 2000 and had early releases by then less known producers like Andy Caldwell, Franck Roger and Berlin's Cab Drivers: who inaugurated the imprint. It returns with London based Jose Carretas who serves up "Breathe Into Me" featuring Angel A's sultry vocals and is classic timeless deep house in the vein of legends like Jon Cutler or Miguel Migs with its sexy sax solo, emotive strings and all round mellow groove. On the flip, "The World In Action" is a bit more lively on this funky live band/latin via Fela Kuti number with slap bass, steel drums and groovy wah-wah guitar action; but wait for those church organs to come in: class!

  1. Upward Leap (8:10)
  2. Train Of Vicissitudes (8:14)
  3. Reminiscence (5:20)
Review: With The P Connection, former Kimochi and Pads contributor Niro Perrone makes his debut for Soul People Music's Boards series. Aside "Upward Leap" is something of a throbbing, peak-time jacker, with Perrone focusing the action around a mind-altering analogue bassline and handclap-heavy drum machine percussion. There are occasional TB-303 acid lines, too, plus the kind of hazy, chord-heavy breakdown that was once the hallmark of late '80s Italian dream house productions. On the flip, you'll find the tactile grooves, bouncy electronics and swirling pads of "Train Of Vicissitudes", plus the intelligent techno influenced, intergalactic warmth of "Reminiscence".

Gap EP (12")
Cat: WISGUD 003. Rel: 27 Feb 17
  1. Gap (6:44)
  2. Shift That Rule (7:44)
  3. Gap (Janeret remix) (7:00)
Review: Carlos Lowwaxx Sanchez joins the party at Isgud off-shoot Wax Isgud with two of his trademark smoke-stacked jackers. With a cool, restrained sense of groove running throughout "Gap" takes the lead with an early 2000s Chicago-style strut - brushed shuffled drums and a mild sense of jazz to the rippling chords. "Shift That Rule" digs deeper again, switching the drums to a more linear arrangement allowing the dreamy chords ebb and flow over the track. Remix-wise Parisian deep house professor Janeret twists "Gap" so the chords create a soft undulating bed for a cosmic wave of big breeze pads. Beautiful.

Project 6 EP (12" repress)
Cat: ACACIA 3001. Rel: 27 Feb 17
  1. Boiler Room Teaser (7:58)
  2. You Stepped Right Into My Life (K Hand re-edit) (6:56)
  3. Live (4:41)
Review: Detroit techno veteran Kelli Hand returns to action with her first EP of original productions since 2015. More impressively, it's the first volume in her Project series since the tail end of the 1990s (though, as nerds will point out, Project 5 was reissued in 2014). A-side "Boiler Room Teaser" feels like a product of the late 1990s, combining as it does no-nonsense Motor City techno drums and growling, razor-sharp riffs. There's a similarly dark, booming, warehouse-friendly feel to "K.Hand Live", a house/techno hybrid full of weighty kick drums and sparkling, spacey electronics. Curiously, the EP's other track - "You Stepped Right (K.Hand Re-Edit)" - is a pitched up, slightly beefed up rework of Melba Moore disco classic "You Stepped Into My Life".

  1. Liquid Funk (13:33)
  2. Jack Bass (7:08)
  3. D-Down (6:44)
Review: Since making his debut way back in 2002, Franco Cinelli has giddily hopped between labels, releasing well-regarded material on such imprints as Ilian Tape, Esperanza, Bass Culture, Raum and, most recently, Untold Stories. This first outing on Savor is notable for A-side "Liquid Funk", a 13-minute-plus workout that fixes subtle but spacey electronics to a killer, bassline-driven tech-house groove. There are subtle changes throughout, but for the most part it's a hugely hypnotic, locked-in experience. Elsewhere, the Argentine producer wanders closer to dreamy deep house territory on "Jack Bass", and joins the dots between New Jersey organs and stripped-back tech-house-funk on the decidedly wonky "D-Down".

  4. Vakula - "Track Three" (4:41)
Review: Eternally on-point SpeedofSound delve into 2017 in slo-mo soul style as Ukraine producer Vakula and longstanding Japanese maestro Kez YM whip up four restrained, deep drift grooves. Vakula takes the lion's share with three superlative twists: "Track One" rocks with a dusty jazzy groove and warehouses of space between the elements, "Track Two" morphs and melts a simple-but-devilish filtered disco loop while "Track Three" strips back the layers to reveal a wheezing bluesy whisper over lolloping trippy drums. Kez YM's "Drain Away" brings the EP together. Chunkier in the drum department and arranged with a unique counter melody in the percussion, it's pure hypnosis.

  2. OTown (8:24)
  3. Ain't Got No Time (Japan Blues remix) (5:24)
  4. OTown (Japan Blues remangle) (4:11)
Review: The inaugural release on the Place No Blame imprint comes from Offenbach-based oddball DJ Slyngshot. The Yappin Records' founder's slim discography is full of curious, off-kilter gems, and this 12" is no different. Interestingly, his original versions are tucked away on the flip, though both "OTown" (a loopy, dusty, organ-heavy jazz-house/MPC hip-hop hybrid) and "Ain't Got No Time" (a tougher, more locked-in jazz-house groover) are impressive. The A-side is instead taken up by Japan Blues re-makes of the same tracks. The championed producer teases out the head-nodding aspects of "OTown" whilst adding some distorted low-end grunt, before delivering a wonky, surging, synth-laden re-shape of "Ain't Got No Time".

  4. Glyn - "Kevin Lomax" (Orson Wells remix) (5:39)
Review: Ron Wilson's 777 serves up more raw and rusty house jams on a new various artists sampler entitled Internal Affairs: this is serious! On the A side is newcomer Brighton with "Tesla" (Leaves Remix), while Frankfurt's Orson Wells gives us "Ratio" where Saarbruckens finest: Roger 23 gets on the remix and delivers a lush deep acid rendition this side of Tin Man. On the flip, Leaves returns with the impressive "Third Floor" getting an awesome remix by Pablo Mateo; working those drum computers to impressive effect as always. Finally, Orson Wells stays on too; working the nightshift on his remix for Glyn's "Kevin Lomax" and giving it a lo-fi, neon lit makeover that will appeal to retroverts dancing well into the morning at Robert Johnson next Sunday morning.

  3. Jamaican Part: The Sauce (7:19)
  4. Gritty Part: Nitty Gritty (5:12)
Review: Natural Midi has been one of the primary homes to Scott Grooves' tunes, easily the most underrated producer from the Detroit area, and he's back on his own label with four new beauties. Grooves has been churning out exquisite deep house bangers since the 90's, a very specific brand of dance music that incorporates everything from jazz, to disco and funk; his basslines are always warm and soothing, while his percussion is dusty and the synth lines musical. In an age where 'outsider' house rules, his grounded approach is always a breath of fresh air to us. The opener "Finished" is a funky house swinger choc-a-bloc with gorgeous claps and stuttering toms, and "Inspiration Sound" scratches the 4/4 off for a bit of broken trip-hop - a certified winner. On side B, "The Sauce" is moody, spaced-out and offers subtle keys, while "Nitty Gritty" slams out a dicing little percussion with a lo-fi feel. Absolutely terrific.

  5. Track 5 (Consistent part) (6:22)
Review: Detroit stalwart Scott Grooves has been churning out 12" singles since the early '90s, yet the quality barely seems to drop. This second - and, according to the producer's own sales notes, "likely last" - installment in the Parts Manager series contains five more top notch workouts. As ever, there's plenty of variety across the EP. Contrast, for example, the flowing, ear-catching musicality of classic deep house opener "Gravitas", the body popping drum machine hits and rubbery P-funk bass of "Deneb", and the deep nu-jazz shuffle of "Monowaltz". The pleasing eclecticism continues elsewhere, via the fluid electric piano workout "Bittersweet Live", and the Chez Damier style basement smoothness of hypnotic closer "?".

  4. Wrong House (6:44)
Review: Fabrizio Ortella loops back to very first notes of his groove-laden career so far as he completes the inaugural "Made In Lyon" series that he launched with on Rutilance. Once again it's a wide-berth, chop-slapping house affair with broad drums palettes and hooky loops: "Energy" is straight out of the Kenny Dope playbook - thundering drums and jazzy chords while the brilliantly titled "Squirt The House" slips into something more Detroitian with its icy dub synths and concrete blasting kicks. "Get It" is a smooth operator, unhurried in its build and persistent with its pads while "Wrong House" closes on a shifty rolling tech note, nodding at the legacy of Plus8 and paying homage to the greatest nation on earth... house nation.

Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: The ACJ94 EP comes courtesy of Accidental Jnr, a new sub-label of Matthew Herbert's Accidental. Here he presents a remix of Jamie Lidell's "When I Come Back Round" from 2005's Multiply. Entitled "Live version - Matthew Herbert long Night dub" it's a much more raw and funky take on the track with tough drums and emotive elements where the source material is, like its name suggests, from an appearance on an L.A. radio station from some years ago. On the B side, we have the man himself Herbert with a new track entitled "Megaphone" a classic and proper deep house jam for the late night that's expertly crafted by the artist who has brought us such timeless classics like "See You On Monday" amongst many others.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: Following last year's launch release Lyon lotharios In Any Case deliver another easy-vibe serenade with five more deliciously deep grooves from house to hip-hop. The currently unavoidable Tell kick starts with a warm jack that conjures feels on a Parrish level while fellow Lyon artist GS2 gets grainy and choppy with his feather ruffling heads-down session and Malouane takes us deep underwater with a blurry loop mesmeriser. Elsewhere Manuel Nie really jazzes it out with a sparse, break-based intro before splashing into sedate Iz & Diz and style soft jacks and Ibn Sabaa returns to the label to close the show with a deviant wonky cosmic beat session "Stupid Loop". There's nothing stupid about any of this.

Review: Moonrise Hill Material regular Ethyene is the latest producer to join the Kolour Ltd stable, bringing with him a fine selection of Clubs Dubs & Rubs. The four tracks on offer are effectively high quality club tools for deep house DJs who aren't afraid to drop disco jams in the pursuit of dancefloor magic. Opener "Truth About The Unseen" combines loose, swinging deep house beats with selected passages of a forgotten disco jam, while "Riding In Daddy's Car" adds an extended, filter-heavy breakdown to a similar discoid template. The tempo drops considerably on the groovy, saucer-eyed disco-house chug of "Time Won't Change", while "Strangers Must Be" turns an '80s soul treat into a dreamy deep house shuffler.

Review: Vlad Gavrilov is only new to the scene, but the music that he makes under the DJ Heure moniker will gain traction among house heads in no time. His debut EP for Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii set the scene for what will surely become a constant slew of quality house releases from the young producer, and this follow-up EP for Sex Wildblood's newly crowned All My Thoughts imprint has all the makings of an instant hit. "Outsider Resource" is a magnificent slice of jungle-filtered house music, wavy and loose in all the right places, and exactly the sort of wayward dance music that the UK should be all about. On the flip, "Some Time Still" is a straighter affair; backed by a more traditional house groove, that is, but the sounds chosen are still very much of the hazy category, whereas "Pensively" adds in a little jazz sensibility by launching a heavy, beat-centric house groover with a solid punch. Heavy.

Review: Son of Sound is Henry Maldonado of Brooklyn, New York who has been producing since the '90s under aliases such as Groove Culture, Future Soul and Native Underground. Returning for the fifth release on his own Son Of Sound label, the Love Up Beat Down EP commences with the dirty, funked up disco loops of "Bout Love Again" which is redolent of classic DJ Sneak, while "Need Each Other" is a much deeper and more lo-slung affair using those classic soul samples and liberal use of the filter: which is always a good touch. Finally on the flip we've got "Influence Is Bliss" and indeed it is on this neon-lit boogie number with some sharp and sassy synth work that calls to mind Kaidi Thatham or Bugz In The Attic.

Review: Todd Terje has yet to release the original version of "Jungelknugen", but he's decided to release these remixes anyway. It makes sense: as you'd expect, both are top notch. Four Tet handles the A-side, delivering a version rich in Italian dream house style pianos, swirling synthesizer chords, jazzy musical touches, analogue bass and the kind of live-and-loose beats that the veteran prodicer has become famous for. It even boasts a rush-inducing breakdown for those 6AM "Scandolearic" moments. On the flip, Terje's old pal Prins Thomas takes the track in a different direction, fusing Terje's piano motifs with bleep style sub-bass, psychedelic electronics, and some swinging disco beats of his own.

  3. Man O To (Pepe Bradock dub) (5:44)
Review: On his recent releases under the Nu alias, Rolf Fabian Laumer has giddily fused the smooth, clicking rhythms of minimalist tech-house with a range of global influences. The results have, by and large, been superb, sitting somewhere between sun-kissed warmth and haunting iciness. He's at it again on "Man O To", layering a drifting, chant-like vocal over a backing track that somehow joins the dots between cumbia, dub and tech-house. French maestro Pepe Bradock handles remix duties, first wrapping the vocal around a typically dusty, off-kilter house rhythm, before laying down a slightly tougher, stripped back Dub that's the EP's standout moment.

  2. Nuwhat (4:20)
  3. Message 406Y (2:42)
Review: Funkineven's Apron is back with the Moon Theory EP by SMDB following up great releases by Max Graef and John T Gast. The London producer (real name Simbad Stanislas) who has released on Mad Mats' Raw Fusion and City Fly previously is in fine form here. He serves up some dusty and wacky yet soulful deep house on the brilliant "Nuwhat". There's an important message conveyed on the opening track "Message" an emotive sci-fi ambient piece and those very same words of wisdom continue on the rather Underground Resistance sounding hi-tech soul of "Message 406Y" which is so good that you'd wish it went much longer than its modest three minute duration.

Review: Last year, experienced Chicago producer Ricardo Miranda delivered the first Latin Soul Brothas 12" in four years. Here, he brings the long-running project back to Neroli for the first time since 2012. As usual, he uses the opportunity to fuse traditional Chicago house tropes - the dreamy fluidity of Larry Heard, the sharp acid lines of Phuture, and so on - with percussion and instrumentation from the world of Latin music. The results are uniformly excellent, from the twinkling pianos and winding acid lines of "Dizzy Vibes", to the dusty electronic jazz bliss of closer "Friday Grooves", via the "Brazilian Rhyme"-goes-house shuffle of "Otra Voz".

  1. Beyong Katovl (Pepsi edit) (5:30)
  2. Ms Bombastic (Pepsi edit) (7:43)
Review: It's been some two years since Paramida established Love On The Rocks. In that time, the label has put out some memorable material, including essential 12" singles from Telephones, Khidja and Fantastic Man. The time seems right, then, for Paramida to step up and deliver her first EP for the label. Tehran Bomb also marks the start of a new, occasional re-edit series. She begins with the intoxicating late night throb of "Beyond Katovl", where fluttering vocal samples and psychedelic electronics ride a bombastic, high-energy groove. It's a muscular affair, all told, but strangely intoxicating. Flipside "Ms Bombastic" sees Paramida reworking an early house workout, cleverly emphasizing the original track's surging percussion and killer bassline.

  1. John Shima - "Omni" (7:08)
  2. Plant 43 - "Light The Way" (5:28)
  3. Mihail P - "Prismatic" (6:43)
  4. Leigh Dickson - "Follow" (6:05)
Review: Given the UK's lust for non 4/4 dance music, it seems like a crying shame that we don't produce more electro labels on a constant basis. Luckily, Verdant Recordings and us are on the same wave-length, and the label have answered our wishes with a heavy debut EP from a mixed bag of new and interesting talent. Fatal Tangent member John Sima steps up first with "Omni", a glitchy, metallic slice of deep techo, while Semantica's excellent Plant43 verges into more traditional Detroit pathways with the supremely industrial "Light The Way". Mihail P's "Prismatic" launches an all-out attack thanks to a bubbling succession of bass shots and hazy synth waves, leaving Leigh Dickson's "Follow" to take the tempo down with "Follow", a majestic, cold-hearted, pseudo acid bombshell wound down to head-nodding levels.
