  4. Stevn Aint Leavn - "Sub Marino" (6:53)
Review: Cinthie's Berlin Based house imprint returns with a new EP entitled Beste Modus 07, featuring tracks from the label boss and former Stattbad resident herself on the A side. There is the early '90s Jersey sound of "Back To Garage" then the equally stateside sounding throwback sounds of "Hold'em". On the flip, label co-founder stevn.aint.leavn. serves up the soulful and emotive boompty business of "Isn't It" and the raw and jackin' stomp of "Sub Marino": a fine DJ tool closing out this nice EP in style. Fresh from a strong January release, the Beste Modus crew look set to take 2017 by storm, this time with a versatile record that yet again raises the bar within the contemporary house scene.

  1. Manic Cinq (6:46)

  3. Buy Freedom (6:18)
  4. OCGC (6:06)
Review: It would be fair to say that Morgan Geist's Megaprojects series is an attempt to go "back to basics". Not only are the tracks created using - in his words - "cheap drum machines and vintage synths", but also pay tribute to some of his earliest inspirations. In practice, that means doffing a cap to fluid and ear-pleasing early deep house on the glistening "Manic Cinq", pitched-down Italo-disco and bass-heavy early British techno ("Fuzzy Detail") and tactile, breakbeat-driven late '80s house (the rather wonderful "Buy Freedom"). Arguably best of all, though, is closer "OCGC", whose psychedelic acid lines, tactile synth bass and cheery synth melodies make the track sound like a cross between vintage Metro Area and Orbital's "Halcyon".

Review: Tyrone Isaac-Stuart on sax, Jabriel Al Suhaimi on guitar, Arnheim on the magic studio touch: "World You Tell Me About You" builds on where Lithuanian producer last left us on his own Barbara imprint. Four tracks of dusty, loosely-hewn cuts ranging from the baggy, woozy pure jazz sentiment "Hold Me" and "Would You Tell Me About You" to the loopy chugging haze of "That He Man Of Hers" by way of the lolloping off-beat "One's Own Permanent Faith", Arnheim's fusion skills continue to explore unchartered territories remain on-point.

Review: Most of the releases on Imogen Recordings to date have been from label boss Ilija Rudman, but this time around the disco house operation is turning to a relatively fresh proposition - Ourra. The alias of one Simon Tappenden, This Time is the first dedicated release for Ourra and he comes out swinging with the sultry slap-bass inflected title track boosted by a classic vocal turn from Robert Owens. Rudman meanwhile weighs in heavy with no less than three remixes of the track on the B side, with the "Radiophonic Mix" standing out thanks to its stripped down effectiveness.

  4. Coral Desires (7:59)
Review: Lo-fi and retro classic house sounds with a Gothic flair courtesy of Fasaan Recordings who have dug deep into the techno underground of Malmo and found the drum machine anthems of Frankie Twilight. The woman behind this Alan Vega-esque alias does not subscribe to any genre definitions and is said to have played in a Berlin-based punk band as well as being a resident DJ at a members only 78 rpm jazz club. Starting off with "Olympia" on the A side, which is a raw and jacking live jam that could well have been recorded in one take. On the flip, there is the Murder Capital style darkwave techno of "My Opal Gems" or the thundering and brooding jackathon of "Coral Desires" which is equally as worthy of your attention.

Review: In what feels like a perfect turn of events, Melbourne's Analogue Attic have snapped up Atlanta's Matthew Hayes for a wondrous, utterly free-minded ambient showdown that has actually put this artist firmly back on our radar. The longtime producer has always been renowned for the craft of his sonic sketches, but it's with this new EP that we've really come to appreciate why he speaks of himself as an engineer rather than a producer. Tunes like "Penny Royal" and "Smiths" have clearly been created by someone who understands the art of subtlety and restraint, a beautiful myriad of sounds that flutter with absolute balance and precision before being placed in a state of continuous metamorphosis. This is real ambient music; not that cheap, two-key drone that's punted hither and dither.

Review: Luckily for us and you lot reading this - perhaps not so much for the owners of the original copies - Peven Everett has decided to embark on a bit of a reissue marathon, with plenty of his biggest hits resurfacing on our charts after lengthy hiatuses. The king of 'soulful' house has never sounded so good, and it's thanks to Italy's Groovin label that we're graced with two version of 2007's Feelin You In And Out. In case you don't know this monster of a song, just try to imagine an underground version of R Kelly backed by the sort of dubbed-out house made by peeps like Mood II Swing, and you're somewhere close to it. You also get two versions of the hit, one deep version and another more fast-paced take. Magic.

  1. Blast (with Narch beats - feat Pendo Zawose) (5:04)
  2. Rift Valley (feat Abakisimba) (5:26)
  3. Rent-A-Disc (6:29)
Review: Dekmantel presents Esa Williams's debut EP Aweh. With his discography growing steadily over the past couple of years, the South African artist constantly breathes new energy into his music by incorporating global influences in his work. This is no exception and includes his promising hit track 'Blast' which is a perfect mixture of eerie Afro-noise with staggering traditional Gogo music vocals. The B side covers two well thought gems including "Rift Valley", a house track mixed up with drums and vocals from the East African collective Santuri and Abakisimba. Aweh's 'Rent-A-Disc' represents the name of a Cape Town based music library that opened its doors in the early to late 90s. The library was the place to be to get all the early house records for many local DJs on the Cape Flats (including Williams's late father) and served as the inspiration for the B-side track. A dark, energetic and yet percussive Cape Town meets Chicago vibe is the result.

  3. Brighton - "She Wanted Some Music" (9:59)
  4. Potensia - "I Never Really Knew" (Benedikt Frey edit) (4:24)
Review: The 777 imprint continues to be a trusted source of forward-thinking acid and hardware based manoeuvres, and this four tracker has everything any jaded jacker could desire in the quest for new sounds. Leaves' "Third Floor" is an upfront gem of sizzling drums and chunky square wave bass, and yet the production is finely balanced and delivered with poise, while Pablo likewise keeps a steady hand on the tiller even as "Newkoelln" nudges towards more emotive territory. Brighton takes a less dancefloor focused route into loping electronica with a tasty amount of swing and a rich spread of synths, and then Benedikt Frey finishes the record off with an edit of Potensia's "I Never Really Knew" that heads into ambient breakbeat techno abandon with ease.

Review: "Forever Mona" was originally released in 1995 on Prescription Records sub-label Balance Recordings. A collaboration between Detroit legend and label boss (alongside Ron Trent) Chez Damier and the emerging young talent of the Motor City's third wave known as Stacey Pullen who would go on to found Black Flag Records and become a legend in his own right. A timeless classic amongst those that know, the four versions of the track featured here represent a true zeitgeist of the mid nineties Motor City sound in all its, funky, emotive and hi-tech deepness. This re-issue respectfully presents all the four tracks in their original format and not just one side like some of the bootlegs out there.

  4. Maik Yells - "Swap" (7:36)
Review: Berlin's Modus crew return with another widescreen session from affiliates, friends and comrades. The shadowy DXC duo let rip with another up-tempo ode to Detroit with a relentless slightly dubbed out riff. Long-standing German representer Mac-Kee gets a raw Chicago chunk on with "I've Been Tune" while equally enduring master-craftsman Franck Roger provides spiritual healing with his sultry, harmonic Iz & Diz-esque "Ever". Finally London's Maik Yells takes the last leg with the restrained and contemplative, garage-style strutter "Swap". As with the previous editions of the "Beste Freunde" series, it's premium ear candy across the board... And likely to fly just as quickly.

Review: Swedish house sort Henrik Bergqvist built his reputation on a pair of fine releases for Aniara Records, so it's good to see him return to the Swedish label after a two-year absence. He begins in confident fashion with "Sanctuary", a late night romp through warehouse-friendly pastures full of tactile synth bass, ghostly melody lines and muscular riffs. "Renewal" takes a similar 'Red Zone era David Morales' approach, adding some moody pads and synthesizer flashes to slightly lighten the mood, before Bergqvist charges off into dub-house territory on the low-slung shuffle of "Have A Nice Trip".

Review: Emotional Rescue continues its Dancefloor series apace with this choice reissue of an early deep house gem outside the usual thoroughfare of Chicago house history. Produced by Andrew Komis, "It's You" is a 1989 update of the ESP classic of the same name, and its various mixes have been cult favourites with all kinds of DJs for many years. The "New York - London Mix" is a stripped back slice of sensuality with a killer bassline and lean and mean drums behind the sultry vocal, whereas the "Free House Mix" takes a turn into bubbling electro and acid without losing that smouldering sassiness. The "NU Style Mix" is an added treat that places the emphasis on the drums, screaming out for some seriously creative mixing.

Review: The latest 12" on My Rules features label boss Justin Van Der Volgen reworking cuts from two music industry pals: DFA regular Shit Robot (AKA Irishman-in-Germany Marcus Lambkin) and Bristol-based disco deviant Felix Dickinson. Van Der Volgen's version of the former's "Lose Control" is a stomping, peak-time friendly affair, with snippets of the original female vocal, twisted acid lines and siren-style held-note chords rising above a throbbing, techno style rhythm track. In contrast, his version of Dickinson's "Burning Flame" is a retro-futurist Chicago house-meets-dub disco affair. Wisely, Van Der Volgen makes full use of the original's spine-tingling male vocal, wrapping it around an addictive, tactile bassline, drum machine hits and restless cowbells.

Review: Albuquerque's Plastik People continues to be the leading bastion for hard swinging garage house in the Deep South. This time label boss Marc Cotterell has linked up with Dominic Balchin as Tuff Vibes to bring the classically informed heat to the people who just can't get enough of that warm, soulful sound. "Leave Me Cold" does the absolute opposite of its title thanks to the oodles of piano, organ and more melodic flexing besides. "Jazzy '99" is a more accurate guide with its sassy sax licks and vibing chords, and then "Rhythm Of The Vibe" pushes the tempo up for a purely dancefloor minded workout.

Review: More from Bristol-based party-starters Boogie Cafe, whose recent releases have impressively straddled the fine line between tooled-up re-edits and all-original productions. On the A-side, they've persuaded New York-based Bristolian DJ Nature to remix current Bristol resident Admin. The man formerly known as DJ Milo does a terrific job, too, offering up a trippy chunk of loose, breakeat-driven, deep house disco that boasts serious amounts of energy. On the reverse, Admin remixes Chezz's "Bossa", wrapping spacey synthesizer motifs and a killer synth bassline around a superbly fluid and crispy broken-house groove. It's a seriously soulful interpretation, and arguably the stronger of the two tracks.

Review: For their latest trip into soul-soaked machine music, People Of Earth has turned to debutant Detroit producer Haz Mat, who has been plying his trade as a musician and DJ in the Motor City for at least the last 15 years. There's an assured feel to A-side "My Zania", a rock solid, occasionally driving deep house number smothered in fluttering chord progressions, techno style analogue bass, and rising, intergalactic motifs. You'll find more tech-tinged deep house soul on the flip, where the synthesizer-heavy "Bridge To The Universe" - a fitting title, all told - sounds particularly addictive. He draws an excellent debut to a close with "Groove of Life", where fluttering flute solos dance across a jazz-funk inspired, Andres style deep house number.

Here, they join forces for the first time since 2014, serving up a fine two-tracker on their Aniara Recordings label. "Kepler 186f" is a pleasingly stargazing affair, with spacey chords, Detroit techno style melodies and occasional acid flashes bubbling away over a rolling, analogue sounding deep house groove. On the flip, they deliver a more robust, tribal influenced groove, peppering these humid rhythms with a gurgling bassline, typically European tech-house electronics and chiming melody lines. It's an excellent return to action, all told.

With such talent on show, it's unsurprising that A-side "Two Way Here One Way Go" - a rolling, club-ready fusion of Tony Allen style drums, Afro-futurist sounds and killer musical touches - is thoroughly fantastic. It's accompanied by two tasty B-sides: a pitched down, synth-heavy shuffler entitled "No Facetime (Errors)" and the starry, up-tempo, Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk-meets-Restless Soul grooves of "BBQ".

Review: Two of West Canada's most prolific artists come together for this special edition record on Heart to Heart: now into its seventh release. Elka aka E. Benaroch (ESB/1080p/Logic Systems) and D Tiffany (Dj Zozi) team up to elevate your minds with these four 'Detroit schooled house and sprawling dubby experiments' which call to mind the heyday of Prescription Records and the like. Sounds of the 'Canadian Riviera' (as the Mood Hut guys would say) which bear the sonic hallmarks of this fledgling scene featuring some trippy/lo-fi aesthetics but an undeniable deepness throughout. Emotive stuff, but might we say there's something about that killer B.C bud... if you know what we're saying!

  2. Steady Jam (DJ Nature dub)
  3. Pace, Movements I-IV (HOLOVR remix)
  4. Rain (Herron remix)
Review: Emotional Response again teams up with Meda Fury and Sad City to present an EP of remixes from the acclaimed debut album, Shapes In Formation. Enlisting a killer tag-team of DJ Nature, HOLOVR and Herron to bring their own retakes of Gary Caruth's music, arrives with justified anticipation.

The success of Sad City's debut opus was a deserved conclusion to a journey across fourth world ambient, found sound samples and jazz-touched beats. All are reworked and expanded here while retaining the artist's all encompassing atmospheric oeuvre.

First Milo Johnson dons his DJ Nature moniker for two mixes of Steady Jam. The stand out of the album for many, it seemed right to request Milo's skills to push the sample-based loops to a deep dance floor. Rolling congas, skipping hats and the teasing, soulful melodies come together to work their magic. Vocal and Dub are crafted and cut as one long-form take for the more adventurous, this is dub-disco for the today's real (to reel) entertainers.

Side two is given over to rising names in HOLOVR and Herron. With releases on Opal Tapes, Further and Firecracker Recordings, Jimmy Billingham 303-infused sound is perfect in reshaping Caruth's trip that is Pace, Movements I-IV. Building slowly with trademark 909 meets acid, kick eventually arrives to take the remix beyond head nodding to swinging minds and hearts.

The EP closes with a perfect dismantle and rebuild by Manchester's Herron. A man of talents, Sam Lewis is pushing his City's cultural landscape via the Soup Kitchen venue, co-running the on-point Meandyou Records, while still having time to record solo as Herron and for Hinge Finger as one half of CO/R, alongside label head Joy Orbison. The glitch beats, drone synthesis and orchestral vocal snatches of Rain fuse and percolate in the mind's eye. Sad City. Reshaped in transformations.

  4. Vamos A La Playa (6:33)
Review: Having established the label via a string of well-regarded, multi-artist EPs, Quartet Series has now decided to offer regular contributors showcase 12" singles of their own. The first comes from Parisian producer Tell, who begins with the driving grooves, booming bass and undulating synth loops of "Faster Than Light". Next, he tips a wink to Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys and vintage Italian house on the wonderful "Y'all Feel That Honey (Paradise Mix)", before going all jazzy on the U.S garage-influenced deep house warmth of boogie-sampling killer "What Can You Do For Me". Closer "Vamos a la Playa", meanwhile, is a fluid dancefloor treat smothered in jazzy guitars, rich chords and soft focus saxophone.
