  3. Glint AM (4:55)
  4. Glint AM (DJ Normal 4 Vibemixx) (5:15)
Review: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

  4. From Oslo to Aal (By Train) (4:58)
Review: Noted disco house label Whiskey Disco kick off a new series with the talents of regular contributor B. G. Baarregaard. The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

  1. Breakplus - "Le Train Enflamme" (7:56)
  2. Mr Beatnick - "Achilles Heel" (5:30)
Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.

  3. Osmosis
  4. Racily
Review: Steadily building up his profile within the realm of heads down techy house music, Lee Burton lands on Elephant Moon with an EP that fizzes with production flair while retaining a serious floor-minded focus. "15:30 (The Jam)" bounces along with the kind of slinky, shuffling energy you'd expect from an early Cynosure Record, while "12 Angry Apes" keeps the swing up while heading towards a more upbeat headspace. "Osmosis" is one of the standout jams on the record, managing perfect threads of piano and chord in the mix to make for a sharply honed club track. "Racily" then rounds the EP off with a diversion into lush electro, maintaining the soothing tones from the rest of the

Cat: AKU 005. Rel: 05 Dec 16
  1. Toute Vie Est (7:34)
  2. Une Paranthese (7:46)
  3. Au Sein De L'eternite (9:11)
Review: Clebert might be new to the scene, and we might not know much about the producer, but he sure does fit into the Aku family. These three deep house tracks are the perfect balance between smooth and bouncy, leftfield and club-minded, making us instantly curious. The thing is, the tunes' analogue approach also sound well-balanced, not going for a gratuitously raw sound and, instead, crafting a deep and luscious set of frequencies out of each beat or harmony. All three tunes are different from one another, and each offer something interesting, with "Tuote Vie Est" providing a visceral Mr Fingers kinda flex, "Une Paranthese" laying down a masterfully dreamy set of background melodies, and "Au Sein De L'eternite" going deep into the wormhole, and injecting the sort of sci-fi feel that we love to hear across all house tunes. Bangin' and tipped!

  1. Track 1 (6:30)
  2. Track 2 (8:00)
Review: On-point Aussie label Butter Sessions latest excursion is of mysterious origin. All the Melbourne imprint will say is that Consumer Watchdawgz is: "a collaboration between two mysterious figures from down under". Regardless of origin, there's something wonderfully retro-futurist about the untitled A-side, which peppers a dense, mid-90s European techno rhythm with cascading, IDM style melodies lines, spacey electronics, and "intelligent techno" style motifs. The B-side continues this intergalactic theme at a house techno, with rock solid kick drums being joined by ragged acid lines, drifting ambient chords, and lightly alien lead lines. Both tracks are pretty darn good, all told, and should excite anyone who went to techno clubs in the 1990s.

  3. Take Me Back (5:38)
  4. Long Board (5:35)
Review: The Is It Balearic? train just keeps on rolling as Coyote proffers up even more refined grooves from the heart of the dreamy island dance. "Deep Italian" channels the spirits of classic sensual deep house that clearly nods to the likes of Vibraphone Records for inspiration, while "Fresh Hope" creates a more bewildering experience with interloping melodies and a more insistent beat underneath. "Take Me Back" uses plucked string motifs to weave its own enchanting message, while "Long Board" gets a more plush line in synths to work to round the EP out.

  2. The Italian (6:39)
  3. Plain Of Jars (6:49)
  4. Lavender (featuring Seth Cobblepot) (6:40)
Review: Rothmans turn to debutant producer Dawn Again, who strides onto the football-focused label with a confident grip of otherworldly hardware jams. As is customary on the label, the mood takes on a laid back approach to four to the floor grooves, with "Coloured Pens" kicking off proceedings on a soaring bed of psyched-out house optimism. While "The Italian" may be moodier in its demeanour, it's still just as mellow in its delivery, capitalising on alluring wave synths and reverb swells to great effect. "Plain Of Jars" takes a trippier direction with its bubbling FX and bongo-powered beatdown, and then "Lavender" switches things up with a rolling breakbeat undercarriage and plush lead lines on top.

Review: Mike Dehnert's sublime output has been largely restricted to his own Fachwerk label over the last eight years, so it's surprisingly refreshing to see him branch out to other contemporary labels. His native Pampa imprint seems like the perfect place for his stripped-back shades of house music, and "How Close To Be", with its driving, fuzzed-out bassline makes for the perfect accompaniment to the tune's brooding vocal samples. On the B-side, "Me Too" is lo-fi in very sense of the word, once again dropping on a layer of eerie yet sentimental voices to take the track from odd to the utterly bizarre. In our eyes, that is a good thing...

Review: Hailing from New Mexico and on a mission to uphold the principles of soulful house music, Plastik People offer up another fine selection of operators who understand the legacy laid down by the pioneers of true deepness. DJ Aakmael has been doing his thing on labels like Uzuri and his own UnXpozd Entertainment for a long time, and he's on perfect form on "Deeprespectrak" (with a little assistance on the mic as well). Lars Behrenroth meanwhile brings a drum heavy pressure to the otherwise smooth "Infection", and Mark Nicholas O lays down a sharp and nagging garage beat laden with jazzy licks.

Review: Ironically, Longdick isn't long in the game... Yet. This is his first full vinyl release having teased us on limited House Plants tapes and Bandcamp, here we find the Aussie freshman long-shlonging it across both house and jungle pastures in an arrangement that tells a tale in itself; "Haze" blows the starters klaxon with its sweet dreamy garage vibes, all clappy beats and a deep waist shuffle. "Nightscape" turbo-charges the party with its fusion of clunky tech 4/4s with a slo-mo industrial breakbeats while "First Contact" thrusts into rave nirvana with its Goodlooking style pads, birdsong and busted amen magic. Long it out.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

  1. Never Wanna Lose You (5:52)
  2. Got Me (7:03)
Review: The latest Ten Thousand Yen release is a vinyl only affair from label founder Doc Daneeka that has summer on its mind and certainly sounds like it was a hoot to produce. Samples abound across the two tracks, with "Never Wanna Lose You" standing out for the manner in which Daneeka gleefully toys around with classic breakbeats and freestyle vocal hooks, squeezing in plenty of loops and filters along the way. One for the drunken, messy moments deep into a night in a basement. On the flip "Got Me" is as good a slice of disco-infused house music as you'd expect from a Soundstream record. Great fun.

  4. SB Dauntless (5:30)
Review: For the latest release on his increasingly impressive WT Records imprint, William Burnett has turned to one of his closest buddies, Daywalker & CF partner John Beall. Predictably, he duly delivers a superb EP packed with varied highlights. The title track is particularly impressive, blending dreamy pads, twinkling pianos, cut-up vocals and a sumptuous groove to create a blissful chunk of lilting deep house. "DOHC" is notably rougher, with spine-tingling, sci-fi electronics and muted acid lines crowded round a thrusting techno groove. "Tri-State" brilliantly combines the horizontal chords of classic ambient with skittering IDM style breakbeats, before "SB Dauntless" takes two-step garage and submerges it in a vat of drifting chords and sparse electronic melodies.

Review: After strong turns on Ene Records and Love On The Rocks back in 2014, Ess O Ess make a welcome return with this surefooted single for Not An Animal. "Flamingoes & Wombles & The Blue Oyster Cult" is an urgent, driving slice of motorik disco powered by arpeggios, live bass and shamanistic chanting that calls to mind Yello's chart-baiting classic "The Race". The A side version keeps the synth levels high throughout, while on the flip the "Cyber Dub" teases the ingredients out for a more subtle effect. Whichever side you plump for though, the transcendental qualities are strong on this 12".

Review: In the space of a year Bahnsteig 23 has positioned itself as a label of note with a strong run of 12"s that draw on a rich spread of influences from cosmic disco to world music to provide a little more spice in your dancefloor selections. Portland's Elliot Thomas takes his Etbonz alias out for its first proper outing here after a split 7" with Dro Carey some years back. This single-sided jam serves to raise the intrigue around the project further still with its dense, organically enhanced production and dreamy atmosphere, keeping the tempo slow and simmering for the early part of the party.

Review: Australian producer in the German capital: Fantastic Man returns with a great of an EP for Igor Tipura's always interesting Kitjen, following up Suzanne Kraft's appearance for the Stuttgart founded (but now Berlin based) label. On the A side there's we have got a very '80's sounding, retrovert jam that is the title track, which also features some nice TB-303 acid for good measure. On the flip, we have the intergalactic, congo driven vibes of "Acid Martin" with its trippy drums that as the label itself says: you'll truly lose yourself in! Then finally the swirling deepness of "Legoman" appears, which features a nice breakbeat groove that comes into the fold halfway, accompanying those rusty vintage rhythms and emotive pads just nicely.

Review: Geena is Frenchman Nicolas Molina, who appears for Parisian purveyors of obscure and exotic oddball grooves Antinote for his fifth album. The album will appeal to fans of retro flavoured balearic house made popular at the moment by the likes of Black Spuma, Tuff City Kids or stuff on Paramida's Love On The Rocks imprint. The '80s pan-pipe preset on the groovy "KG Voice" is a great example, or the funk, Amazonian acid house vibes of "Blue Transfer" more particularly; think 808 State. "Keep" goes for some thumping early' 90s UK techno vibes but lush ambient passages like "Natural High" and "La Isla" balance out the EP nicely.

Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

Bringing 2 Bit Crew's CK on board for extra firepower the result is the silkiest track any of the four artists have delivered in their careers so far. Rolling with Miami 808s but jazzy with almost Nu Yorican chords and phrases and a perfectly measured vocal sample, it's guaranteed to warm those heart cockles this winter. Those in need of more of a 4/4 chug should jump on the Club Mix while those in need of more twinkle and dreaminess will be all over Deep Dub Mix.

Review: London's irrepressible Lobster Theremin label launches its new offshoot, Distant Hawaii, with Moods & Grooves signee Hidden Spheres. The mood is summery and the vibes are housey; "Waiting" kicks things into motion with a pseudo tribal beat and some lovely deep house action, while "Upsn Downs" goes a little off-kilter thanks to its rattling percussion samples and sporadic beat. On the flip, "Be A Man" enters the Detroit house territories thanks to its gorgeous pads and lo-fi vocal samples, and "Bill Loves You" chuck groovy jazz instrumentation over a slick groove. Noice!

Muscular whistle-peppered warehouse brings the finale fire via "Decisions In Life". The (crisis) force is strong on this one.

Review: If the melodious, deep and dreamy breakbeat/analogue house fusions showcased on Guide To Action sound like the work of noted Canadian producer Project Pablo, it's with good reason. He co-produced the EP alongside old friend Francis Latreille, jamming out melodies, beats and chord progressions with the help of an MPC, Moog Source, and a bunch of old synthesizers. The result is an EP of rare positivity. Check, for example, the loved-up goodness of "Crusade Mix", the Raze-does-Mood Hut dreaminess of "All My Love Is Free", and the punchy breaks, winding synth solos and stretched-out pads of blissful opener "Empathy Mix". Those heading for deep space should also cop the hazy, dubbed-out, ambient-informed Balearica of closer "Guide To Action".

Review: On UKNOWYs latest release 'Homeless Soul Music' NEMOY delivers a trilogy of warm & unique house grooves further extending and developing UKNOWYs catalog of organic dance music. From the rolling and hard hitting banger 'We made it' to the percussive piece 'Particular Beat' to the laid back, bassline driven 'One for CKENZ' NEMOYs sophisticated blend of delicious synth- and samplework with additional remixes by Sam Irl & Chief makes for an overall exciting EP. Ranging from classic house cuts to afrobeat elements this crisp production will get into your head & legs!

  1. Overhill Road Variation #1 (6:09)
  2. Overhill Road Variation #2 (6:37)
Review: New Franklin Theory: A shadowy new name with subtle clues from the label that we are likely to already know the identity behind the beats. Dare you unravel the mystery at such an early stage or should you simply enjoy the grooves for what they are? Either way the music speaks for itself; "Overhill Road Variation #1" taps deep into the roots with Chicago charm. Chunky, loopy and lean elements comprise to create an almost overwhelming groove. "Variation #2" meanwhile shakes with more of a foggier Claussel-style mysticism with more organic percussion, softer bass and guitar textures that could almost be highlife. The theory continues...

  4. Nocturne Seduction (6:10)
Review: Rewind to 1992: Italian DMC champ Andrea Gemolotto and Alfredo conspirator Leo Marras collide for the first of three rare and seminal deep house exercises that have matured perfectly. The Mr Fingers-at-Bora-Bora trumpet-in-space sensuality of "Lose Control", the wide warm struts of the In Dub We Trust mix, spacious dubby reflections of "Night Clerk", the measured strikes and layered humanised stutters of "Nocturne Seduction"... If you think these remastered sound blow minds today, consider how they blew heads clean off 24 years ago. Historical.

Review: As Icelandic techno receives recognition like never before, so NonniMal steps up to AE Recordings with a fine EP that sports many of the hallmarks of this particular corner of Scandinavian culture. There's a spacious, dubby minimalism that pervades throughout Freyja, but what really sets the record apart is the considered deployment of found sounds, heavily processed and sticking out in the mix to inject some unpredictable energy into these largely calm oceans of rhythmic hypnosis. Even without such decoration the music is exemplary, as on the haunting lilt of the title track with its subtly shifting pads tuned to the emotional maximum.

Love Unconditional EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TR 029 . Rel: 05 Dec 16
  1. Love Unconditional (9:01)
  2. More Journeys Into Swing (7:34)
  3. Sunday Love (6:13)
Review: Och has been a regular fixture on Baby Ford's Trelik label in recent years, and he returns with the late night delights of the Love Unconditional EP sounding stronger than ever. "Sunday Love" is a warm and cosy bumper, keeping the keys bright and breezy while the beat skips away dutifully before the more heads down thrust of "More Journeys Into Swing". The real star of the show though is "Love Unconditional", a particularly gripping track that unfurls seductive synth licks and vocal licks across the whole B side on a one-way trip to nocturnal body jam perfection.
