Lovin' Me (12")
Cat: SITU 012. Rel: 17 Jul 17
  1. Lovin' Me (dubtribe Soundsystem remix) (10:43)
  2. Lovin' Me (Harley & Muscle remix) (7:45)
  3. Lovin' Me (BitterSuite remix) (7:04)
Review: Third time around for BRS's deep house classic "Lovin' Me", which first appeared on Dubtribe Sound System's Imperial Dub imprint way back at the turn of the millennium. Speaking of Dubtribe, the San Francisco duo's brilliant remix - a near perfect fusion of Idjuts style, delay-laden percussion hits, dub disco bass, echoing vocal samples and rich chords - takes pride of place on the A-side of this Situationism reissue. Flip to the B-side to wallow in the slick and sumptuous late night soulfulness of Harley & Muscle's overlooked 2006 rework. Speaking of soul, check the brilliant positivity of Bitasuite's remix (taken from the same '06 Peng reissue), which effortlessly joins the dots between British deep house, modern soul and New Jersey garage. Essential.

  3. Lady Blacktronika - "Can We Still Be Friends?" (7:05)
  4. DJ Aakmael - "Transit" (5:58)
Review: Given that Croatia's Dimensions Festival is one of the most consistently on-point electronic music events around, it figures that their new off-shoot label should regularly hit the spot, too. Certainly, the early signs are good. This second sampler single impresses from start to finish. Occasional L.I.E.S artist Marcos Cabral kicks things off with a fine chunk of fluid, underwater deep house ("Prochainement"), before Byron The Aquarius reaches for the talkbox on the sumptuously deep, soulful, jazz-funk influenced house bliss of "Full Moon". Lady Blaktronika gets things going on side B with the groovy, late night Detroit deep house bump of "Can We Still Be Friends". Arguably best of all, though, is the dreamy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth of DJ Akmael's "Transit".

  4. Words To Give By (7:23)
Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

  3. I Can't Wait (dub) (5:00)
Review: Hot on the heels of Clone Classic Cuts' reissue of Survival's "Midnight Dancin" (as part of a 12" compilation of Joe Lewis productions), Groovin has decided to re-release "I Can't Wait". Intriguingly, this edition appears to include two previously unreleased mixes. So, while some Chicago house diggers may already own the Vocal mix - where Daryl Goodlett's slick, soulful vocals rise above an early garage-influenced chunk of disco-tinged vocal deep house - they won't have heard the Instrumental or Dub versions. The latter, a traditional Dub in the mid-to-late-'80s New York style (think key vocal passages, delay-laden beats and judicious use of other key elements), is particularly good.

Review: Ensuring they keep things pushing forwards while also celebrating their past, Vibraphone call upon rising talent Gemil to deliver an EP that is purely fresh material. "Forces & Gravity" is perfectly honed to get the maximum response from the dance with its muscular production and catchy vocal sample, but if you want an even more focused affair the remix strips things down to the bare necessities and works just as effectively. On the B side "Horizon" gets a touch more playful in its synth work with interplaying riffs creating a dazzling whole, and then "Solar Storm" brings the heads-down, hard-swinging heaviness into the mix in a devastating finishing blow.

Review: Grant was first brought into the ever-expanding Lobster Theremin family late last year following the release of his rock solid Crank album on label offshoot Mork. Here he graduates to the main label via an EP of spacey analogue house positivity. Opener "Feeling (Vocal Mix)" is our pick, sounding not unlike a dreamier contemporary update of Ernest St Laurent's deep house classic "Clumsy Lobster". That said, there's plenty of treats tucked away elsewhere on the EP, including the thrusting, dub-flecked late night hypnotism of "Values" and the fluttering, analogue-rich sunrise house of closer "No Lights".

Review: Warren "Hanna" Harris has long been one of electronic music's most overlooked producers. Despite releasing material on Trackmode, Freerange, Apollo and Sound Signature, he never seems to get the props his productions deserve. The Never End sees him pop up on Funkineven's on-point Apron imprint with a set that attractive drifts between woozy synthesizer ambience, breezy and melodious deep house, deep space drum & bass, Andres-ish jazziness and 21st century dream house positivity. Musically rich, hugely evocative and immaculately produced, the material served up by Harris is undeniably smooth, but with enough raw edges to please those who prefer their house a little scruffy and lo-fi.

  4. I Got Somethin' (Deep mix) (5:58)
Review: New Jersey's Wayne Gardiner has made some superb records over the years, but few are quite as inspired as 1990's "The Difference". Here reissued as part of a wider programme of Strictly Rhythm represses, the track moves in the same rich, melodic and atmospheric circles as contemporary work by the likes of Jovonn and Dream II Science. Of the two mixes available, it's the "A Different Mix" version - blessed with some surprisingly melancholic synthesizer melodies - that really stands out. Flipside "I Got Something" is a little tougher in the drum department, but still as warm and loved-up as Larry Heard's work from the same period. The "Deep Mix", in which Gardiner dives headfirst into the nearby Atlantic Ocean, is particularly special.

Review: Originally released in 2014 on Running Back, Radio Slave's rave anthem "Children Of The E" receives a bunch of remixes here. There were two versions of the original: the "North London Mix" and the "South London Mix". This time around, Bulgarian hardware maverick KiNK works his magic on two versions: the hard hitting yet evocative "Kink SP1200 remix" channels the vibe of early '90s Underground Resistance whilet he breakbeat driven "Kink & Rachel version - DJ GJ edit" is equally as retro leaning: and remixed by label boss Gerd Janson himself. On the flip, former !!! member Justin Van Der Volgen's remix returns to the ravey aesthetics once again and is sure to bang the party!

Review: The Revenge has been busy. His latest LP with Craig Smith as 6th Borough Project recently dropped on Roar Groove, in addition to his remix of Auntie Flo's "Waiting for a (Woman)". He also relocated from Scotland to Denmark and his collaboration with Dirt Crew featuring Nachtbraker remixes was one of the label's biggest records of 2016. Amongst the action, he's taken the time to create a more in your face approach to create his latest EP: a four-tracker of proper club tracks. Starting off with the uplifting deep house of "Every Night" with its irresistible disco tinge, he is then into the sultry late night groove of "Grit". On the flip, things take a trippier and slightly darker turn on the sleek tech house of "Krokodile" with its killer bassline that has just got to be heard.

Review: Jose Rico is part of the Madrid based Downbeat, Freebeat and Shubaka Records. In addition, he has also released on Semantica, Ambiwa and Off Minor Recordings in recent times. Deja Vu is the 11th Downbeat installment and continues to explore a similarly retro route like his recent works: calling to mind the zeitgeist of early '90s deep techno on labels like Peacefrog. Here we have four emotional and spacey tracks, made by old synths and samplers. Starting off with the soothing ambient tones of "Crei'a" and the deeply hypnotic groove of "Consciously", the B side also offers more slow motion delights in the form of the evocative "The Cave" until the EPs finest moment arrives in the form of groovy deep house closer "Analog".

This 12" comes steeped in different shades of party music, from the bouncy organ chords and Motor City leads of "Disquiet" through to the slickly diced up boogie tones of "Elastic". As well as Paolinelli's mighty fine originals, the remixes come from some big hitters. AD Bourke gets on board to turn "Disquiet" into a energised, bubbling house burner while Posthuman brings some of his trademark tough acid touches to Elastic".

Review: With its festival, International Series, DJ Directory and Soundsystem: Dimensions has become a leading name in the underground. In only a mere six years of existence thus far, that's quite impressive we must say! Now, they extend their influence with the start of a new label: Dimensions Recordings. It launches with a 12 track compilation across three separate discs. As the label best describe themselves "An Introduction Part 1 calls upon artists from different corners of the globe who share the similarity of undeniable soul and expression in their music." From the Swahili sung harmonies on Mim Suleiman's lo-slung boogie down groove "Pole Pole", to the afro influences of Swiss collective Alma Negra's "Onga" whose spiritual life music reaches near tribal moments. On the flip, there's Istanbul's Kerem Akdag with "Getdownsoclose" a soulful jazzy and downright dusty deep house groove. Maryland's James Tillman's soulful vocals on "Wander" rounds off Part 1 with a dose of the soul.

Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues to march ahead with further musings on the mysterious creative realm between deep house and techno, which is a natural home for Tomoki Tamura. The Holic Trax boss man steps up with the solid four track Quiet Air Gun EP, and from the get go the quality is unmistakable. "Quiet Air Gun" is an alluring yet undeniably strange jam, with vocals from Moo only adding to the eerie, sensual tension. "Foggy Jungle" is more upfront with its tough beats n' bass exoskeleton, but between that scuffed combo there's ample room for subtle atmospheric touches as well. "DSC House" then brings the real peak time heat with its smoking samples and heavyweight rhythm section, but there's time for one more trip out with the sublime "Stars In The Morning".

Happily, this new two track missive from the Chicago deep house legend more than delivers on its promise. A-side "Kinky City" is as melodious and musically rich as you'd expect, with Trent layering evocative vocals, spacey chords, tumbling synth-strings and bubbly electronic motifs on top of a snappy, analogue drum machine groove. He shows off his impeccable piano playing skills on the warm, rich and soulful flipside cut "Omi Tutu", which boasts slightly more organic sounding drum hits and a bassline that evokes memories of "Sueno Latino" and other similarly minded Italian dream house gems.

Lapien's remix of "Lights Go Out" is the perfect starting point for this EP, riding on thrumming acid bass and haunting pads with a rock solid beat thundering away in the middle. "#dub4 (Tape Mix)" meanwhile ploughs a much deeper furrow into, as you might well have guessed, dub techno, but that's just a foil for the powerful thrust of the original version of "Lights Go Out" which spreads itself across the whole B-side.

Review: When Roger Sanchez donned the Underground Solution alias in 1990 and released "Luv Dancin", the New York producer had yet to become a household name. The single, long considered one of the producer's finest moments, quickly became a deep house classic, with DJs quickly gravitating towards the rich, Nu Groove influenced grooves, twinkling electric pianos and choice disco samples of the "In Deep Mix". This timely reissue also includes the other tracks featured on the original Strictly Rhythm release, including the even deeper and more loved up Egotrip mix and the brilliant "Afterthought", which expertly combines the haziness of NYC deep house with the alien melodies and dub-influenced low-end of UK bleep and bass.

  1. Infi Love (4:18)
  2. Soon (MOA mix) (4:30)
Review: Vancouver Dj/producer Yu Su has previously impressed via occasional contributions to the Mood Hut-affiliated Libra Mix series. This is the DJ/producer's debut solo release and boasts two high-grade cuts on one single-sided People's Potential Unlimited 12". Opener "Infi Love" is typical of the hazy, dusty and spacey Vancouver deep house sound - all soft focus intergalactic chords, vintage drum machine percussion, cut-up female vocal samples and undulating analogue bass. The jazziness continues on "Soon (MOA Mix)", where wonderfully hazy trumpet samples and horizontal chords trickle down over a bossa-inspired beat. As you might expect, it's seriously evocative and atmospheric.

Review: For its 10th release, Lehult put together a 10 track compilation featuring new material by them and their friends. The four sides showcase some familiar label sounds, as well as some unexpected surprises: Original crew members Liem, Lucky Charmz, Eddie Ness, Johan Kaseta and DJ Assam are all on board with new material. Matthias Reiling, A Trap Jr. & DJ Slyngshot, Rainboy and Epikur also join the party. For the special occasion they wanted to compile a collection aimed at the DJs that have been buying their records and supporting their outlet founded a couple of years back. LHLT10 is one of those versatile records that offers something for every situation, one that never leaves your bag. There's chilled, intricate songs for the early and late hours on the dancefloor, dark and vibey Jams for the dungeons, joyful and weird peak time stuff, and some straight up groove monsters - all on one release.
