Review: Scant details are held on Yung Moony but it's likely he's not of this world... The beats on "Yen Pox" say as much. With their industrial hip-hop swag, they create a momentum and feeling that's seldom found on a dubstep joint. Fresh but familiar; the same approach is applied on "Inland" as stretched tones create unease before drooping into rich pools of emotion. Again with the loopy hip-hop mentality, there's a reason Gourmet and FKOF picked up on Moonstones so quickly last year.

  2. Lungs
Review: Where to place Weevil Neighbourhood? Is this dub techno? Perhaps. Dubstep? Maybe. Drum and bass? Sometimes. Experimental? Yes: in the truest sense of the word. It draws from all these aforementioned styles and more, resulting in the formation of a reclusive German label breaking the framework of many electronic music genres wide open. The title-track from Anthone's second EP for the label is where the dub techno suggestion comes from thanks to its caustic chord sequences, only there's flashes of dubstep beat designs and loose drum and bass textures similar to what can be heard on Felix K's Flowers Of Destruction. On the flip, "Lungs" is instrumental and live feeling. In parts it sounds like a band playing, while in others you can here the work of samplers looping, and when combined, it offers an industrial soundscape that's like merging some of the darker rock and metal stylings from Sex Tags No Amfibia with Regis' Sandra Electronics project, only reduced to the point of almost being ambient.

  1. Monster (5:11)
  2. Despite (5:38)
Review: Prolific South London producer Kromestar has been a celebrated name on the dubstep circuit for the best part of a decade, dropping acclaimed singles on a wide variety of labels, including Hotflush, Deep Medi and Dubstar. Here he debuts on the brand new Nebula Music Group imprint, delivering a veritable assault on the senses in the shape of "Monster" - all ragged, pulverizing wobble bass, cheeky rave vocal stabs and massive, reverb-laden beats. It sounds like the sort of record that will be greeted with rapturous cheers when dropped at up-coming summer festivals. Flipside "Despite" is an altogether deeper concoction, with classic dubstep rhythms and heavy dub bass being joined by spooky melodies and spitting electronics.

Review: Bouncing dub business from Malleus once again. A buy-on-sight for fans of Artikal and Piezo, there's a serious funk to the groove here as Malleus places our full emphasis on the low-end before showering us with psychotic FX and twisted designs from on high. Remix-wise Japan's Part2 Style updates the flow with a high energy two-step and mild jungle connotations. "No Harm" done!

Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since the gully Frenchman we know and love as Monsieur Von D shared an exceptional release with Egoless and already he's back. This time he's on Infernal Sounds, which is already proof of its quality - considering how selective and detail-oriented the label have been since launching two years ago. "Cross Of Hendaye" is a solid mechanical roller with heaps of human funk coded into the waspy bassline. "Remember" is a straight up homage to the early days with a sub that palpitates so heavily and tangibly your own heartbeat will sync within seconds. True to the craft.

  2. Zungguzungguguzungguzeng (Horsepower dub mix)
Review: Legendary reggae imprint Greensleeves launches their new dubstep offshoot here with a suitably titanic match up between Yellowman and Horsepower Productions for their inaugural release. Yellowman's "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng" is widely regarded as bridging the gap between the dancehall and hip-hop worlds and is perhaps the toaster's most ubiquitous track. Equally, Horsepower Productions are credited with being instrumental in the sonic formation of dubstep, so they seem perfectly suited to take on the task of realigning Yellowman's "Zunga.." for the dubstep cognoscenti. There's a vocal and dub mix available here and it's the former that truly impresses here, Yellowman's distinctive tones strangely suited to the break heavy twisted industrial stepping subterranean riddim Horsepower have crafted. Big!

Review: Near mythical version of a Plastikman classic from a man who'll remain unnamed, "Ask Yourself" enjoys a rare repress and you'd be wise not to sleep on it. Retaining all the alien isolation and spooked out allure of the original but with rolling drums and a sub powerful enough to heat the whole of Croydon, this remains a matchless piece of remix craft. No questions asked.

  17. Dave Shichman - "So Many Examples"
Review: Brazil's Luvdisaster imprint is one of the country's longest-running exponents of bass music, with releases covering drum and bass, dubstep, grime and trap. Here, they take a different approach, asking a bulging collection of D&B artists to offer-up tracks in non D&B styles that have influenced them over the years. It's a decent idea, and the results are by and large excellent. Highlights include a Roots Manuva-ish hip-hop excursion from Undersound & Intermet ("The Weather"), an immersive deep trip-hop salvo from Duoscience ("Your Eyes In My Memory") and a thrilling blast of samba-jazz from Oliver Ferrer and Michel Palazzo ("Thanks George"). There's also a thrilling piano lament from Undersound ("Thinking of You"), which recalls some of the terrific downtempo work of deep house producer Aqua Bassino.

Review: Epoch's Egyptian Avenue goes full vinyl for the first time with two achingly touching cuts: "Windmill" is a rolling slice of barbed soul with Trentemoller-style pads, Blue Lines era breakbeats and powerful yearning vocals from Afiya. "Devotion" takes us much deeper under oceanic swathes of atmospheric pads, far-away strings and distant halftime beats. From the dance to dirge, Epoch has created something truly special here.

Review: Keeping it loose as we wade into a new year, Encrypted Audio ask Japan's Karnage back for more faraway jams. As with previous outings together, it's an enveloping sea of shades ranging from the woozily bent and cascading tones of "Leaper" that almost slime off the beats to the bleary flute loop that's mangled with precision levels of uplift on "Mysticism". In between we have the industrial strength "SOL" which sounds like a steel foundry melted into a waveform. Powerful.

Review: Truth continue to develop their DDD imprint with deeper melodic and sonic investigations "Smoke" says it all. Total soul with singed edges, Animal's sultry vocals ooze with a subtle jazz flow; it's Truth's boldest (and sexiest) composition to date. "Tunnel Vision" takes us deeper into the dance with an infectious hooky percussive riff and thundering subs while "Devil's Game" is an eight-minute epic that comprises moments of delicate drama and absolute raw bass power. Without question, the best release on their label so far. Perhaps their best release full stop.

Review: Trusik aren't doing things by half: their launch release coaxed Tony Williams away from his Addison Groove project to bring Headhunter back from the ashes, now their second release (vinyl-only as standard) sees them coax the mysterious Ruffcut affiliate Tremble into the open. Naturally he's smashed it: "Too Much Terror" is a molten machine of funk and sci-fi signature whole "Bwoy" lowers the tempo temperature with a dancehall-inspired drum arrangement and dubby vocal textures. Both direct for the dance.

Review: Pitter-patter party piece from early 2013, XXXY's bubblesome future garage cut gets a repress from Pollen... "Rain" is all about the subverted two-step and washed out synth splashes that trickle down the vibe pensively. Meanwhile on the B, Jack Sparrow flips the vibe with upbeat shuffle-drums and a palpitating bassline that drives the vibe with subtle but effective drama. A worthwhile revisit; grab it if you missed it first time around.

Review: Sordid sonic sludge from Bristol's Sorrow, self-released, kissed with fittingly dark artwork and limited... 12"s don't get any more authentic than this. "Stockyards" sets the weighty tone; deep kick foundations and subs that rumbles for days. "Projekts" builds on the lean motif with airy chords and a classic dub swing to the groove. The brilliantly titled "Pirate Banter" struts on a woozy wooden leg rhythm and muffled, heavily processed skanks and horns. Finally the title track "Arisen" shakes and rolls with loose natural momentum thanks to the windy pads, rattling percussion and earworm vocal.

Review: Former turntablist DJ Foster has been one of the biggest names in the Italian dubstep scene since the mid 2000s. The timing is clearly right, then for this debut mix album. Mining the deeper end of dubstep - think evocative chords, smooth but deep basslines, skittish rhythms and intoxicated sounds - Bloodstock is a fluid and sensual journey perfect for post-club sit-downs and horizontal listening. Along the way, there are notable tracks from FNC, Occult, J Robinson (the more obviously dub reggae-influenced, Mad Professor-ish "Lions in Croatia") and Konvex, whose sparse but fearlessly rhythmic "The Fight" provides a clear highlight.
