Review: Innamind have done what everyone has been clamouring after the success of last year's Las x Mikael EP and locked the Finnish pair up in a studio and not let them out until they've laid down another clutch of heavyweight steppers. Nice work Innamind! This time it's a double pack affair brandishing a weighty five productions, three of which are straight up collaborations between the Innamind mainstays. As you'd expect it's a heavily atmospheric affair throughout with the rattling percussive drama of "Drumspeak" the highlight of Las and Mikael's joint efforts, whilst the former's solo cut "Farout" may be the best example of what we like to call drunkstep.

Review: Having been a fixture in the LA beat scene for a long time, the past few years and an association with Brainfeeder have seen Matthewdavid hit a strong flurry of productivity of late, and this long player simply adds to the tumble of fractured soul, lopsided hip hop and swooning balladry. There's a cheeky cover of Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" woven into the slow jam funk of "Perpetual Moon Moods" while elsewhere "Next To You Always" finds Matthewdavid dropping a limber but tongue-in-cheek lyrical flow. With a dizzying array of ideas and moods bouncing the listener around his labyrinthe musical mind, the leftfield LA crooner has once again flouted convention while sugaring the pill to perfection.

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

  4. Trust Again (Major Grave remix)
Review: With the long-awaited DJ Q album finally available, Local Action use the opportunity to sneak out this limited white label 12" featuring four exclusive reworks of the bassline don's "Trust Again" single. First up on the A-side is Texan grime producer Rabit, who overlays some punishing bass and fractured rhythms on top of a scrambled version of the original's pop melodies, and Glasgow-based Inkke, who offers a more dancefloor friendly grime-inspired re-rub which bodes very well for future Local Action Material from the producer later in the year. On the flip side, talented up and coming dubstep producer Compa provides a killer dubstep version which makes incredible use of the full vocal to create the kind of pop-dubstep track Magnetic Man wished they could have made, while Major Grave rounds things off with another killer grime flavoured version which combines a steppers rhythm with some seriously heavy bass. Although most remix EPs can be beset with duff moments, there isn't a single dud on here.

Review: Ninja Tune offshoot Counter has described Alium, Submotion Orchestra's third full-length, as "bigger, bolder and brighter" than previous offerings. It's true that the Leeds-based seven-piece are in fine form, with the string-drenched, early-evening-at-a-festival feel of their more downtempo offerings (highlighted by the fragile, folksy vocals of Ruby Turner) off-set by a selection of tracks that draw more deeply on dubstep, dancefloor jazz, soul and surging electronica influences. As a result, Alium bobs and weaves attractively, mixing lighters-aloft torch songs with more immersive, grandiose efforts guaranteed to get feet moving and lips quivering out on the dancefloor.

  1. Music Killer (extended mix)
  2. Music Killer (Dubplate Pressure)
Review: Music Killer is an appropriately titled second release from the almighty pairing of Pinch and Adrian Sherwood who are clearly enjoying bringing their respective and respected production talents to the table in a studio situation. Whilst the Bring Me Weed 12" released earlier this year was very good it felt a bit like Sherwood and Ellis were only just feeling out where the partnership could go, the two tracks here sound like the results of some extensive studio time for the pair. Having road tested the record on the Juno office stereo it has be said headphones or laptop speakers just don't do justice to the deeply trippy bass weight of "Music Killer" in either it's extended or dubplate pressure version. The former crunches through a 130+bpm riddim and is blessed with all manner of toasting whilst Sherwood is granted the space on the latter to lay down some typically mind-bending reverb and delay effects.

Chris Ebdon is evidently sitting on a wealth of Ishan Sound dubs with this double pack for Hotline following on from a self-titled Peng Sound release of a similar nature earlier this year. Presented in striking yellow, these six cuts find Ishan Sound working with the rolling vocal style of Rider Shafique, and sees Ebdon bring his more club-orientated style to the fore. Heavy steppers vibes through and through from the Young Echo man!

Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

Review: Though best known for their tech-house offerings, Berlin label Styrax have already dipped their toes in the murky world of bass with a release from Synkro last year, and now they turn to Ghostlight, a collaboration between Ghostek and Roof Light for more. "Tomorrow's Child" showcases a mastery of swung garage mechanics, dub textures and melancholy atmospherics. "Pretenders To A Crown Long" is characterised by its deep subs recalling classic dubstep, while "Saboteur" is a more rolling affair, pulsing with deep low-end and spectral ambience.

Review: Music from the young Joshua Leary has been sporadic since he emerged on a wave of YouTube hype at the tail end of 2011, with only the Kings and Them mixtape and this year's one-sided Duga-3release on Record Store Day, but given he received a production credit on Kanye West's Yeezus album last year his relative silence can be forgiven. As such the Waterfall EP represents perhaps Leary's first proper release, and it shows that he has come a long way since the early days of his career. Containing four tracks that bridge the gap between jungle, hip hop and ambient music, Waterfall is both delicate and savage in equal measure, especially on the closing title track, where plaintive piano and semi-automatic snares collide to thrilling effect.

He makes his return herein to Bristol's Idle Hands, coming through with a new album that spans just about all his skills, and can only be described as a musical mind drift - a sonic reverie, if you will. Throughout, we're presented with everything from glitchy, broken down hip hop, to shady shreds of house, and even odd and rhythmic blends of drone and Balearica. It's been on the office stereo all day here at Juno, and it might just be album of the week, in our opinion!

Regardless, if you have been following the label's intermittent releases you will feel the need to check these two cuts. Jah vibes abound in "Eazy Tek it Eazy", a dub-wise steppahs track that has Mariana Trench levels of deepness - we need to hear this one on a big rig! Oodles of delay greet your ears when "Word Sound And Power" swings into view, but there is more of a discernible beat to hang onto here.

Laced with space and complete with myriad versions, a fine balance of meditative bass and mind-blowing sonic creativity is at play throughout. Review: Blacklist hit release number five and it's the label bossman doing what he does best: taking us down dark paths on twisted, subverted adventures we didn't even know existed. "Space Horror" bundles us into the boot of a rusty old rocket and speeds down the backstreets of Omicron Persei 8 where the drums slouch along the slimy alleys and bassline groan and fall out of dark corners. "Walk On Lava" sees us being chucked out of the spaceship from a great height into the eye of a volcano. With blistering kicks and a tense acid line, will we make it out on time or will our geese get cooked? There's only way to find out...

Ably paced with flutters of classic breaks, it's got the mood, energy and weight to stick across any dark genre from garage to tech. Speaking of tech, for a deeper bass pressure and leaner aesthetic jump straight on Bardeya's flip for added darkness.

Review: Kiwi bass head Epoch usually likes to dish out new material through his own Egyptian Avenue imprint, but he's been called up to serve his duties on Blacklist, and who could blame him for delivering the goods? Badminded, categorised on our system as 'deep dubstep', should actually be seen as the doorway between, or rather the key, between the distant planes that are electronica, new age and dubstep. Right, so we know what you're thinking, that's weird, right? But if you listen to the depth and richness of these eight slices of brain dynamite, you'll surely agree with us that Epoch's music goes way beyond the tight barriers of dubstep, and lands the listener into a wholly new sort of planet. You have to give it a go for yourself, what we can say is that it's warmly recommended.

The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. Review: Back in 2010, Peverelist's Punch Drunk label released the Worth The Weight compilation, a collection of hard to find classics from Bristol's dubstep scene. In the years that have passed, dubstep has mutated, and so has Punch Drunk, with the classic dubstep sound giving way to something equally as likely to feature elements of house, techno and experimental music. It's this direction explored in the Worth The Weight Vol. 2: From The Edge, a 12-track compilation featuring tracks from the city and beyond. While Hodge and Tessela represent swung house and techno hybrids, Bass Clef and Ekoplekz are on hand to provide some strange analogue deviations, while Kahn and Zhou represent the city's Young Echo collective. With Pev himself, Andy Mac and Kowton delivering a remix of the classic "Roll With The Punches", this is an essential compilation for anyone with even a passing interest in the past few years of bass-centric UK music.

  1. Stableface (Dark Sky remix)

Review: Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

Lead track "Hypnagogia" takes it's cue from the loose percussive style of Shackleton, gradually weaving in a thumping half step groove and intoxicating layers of Eastern strings - accomplished stuff! On the flip Victoria Klewin adds her floating, slightly saturated vocal tones to the galloping mysticism of "Find Me."

  4. Adios (Diva remix) (7:12)
Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

Review: New label Itinerant Dub introduces itself with three L.I.E.S and Appointment inspired tracks. The first, "Itinerant Magic", takes up the entire A-side and sees distorted everything calmed and controlled by a cosmically bleepy and arpeggiated synth. The B-side is too fast at 45rpm and too slow at 33rpm - or is it? "Jack The Dub" sounds like a busker freestyle junk-drumming on a busy street, while "Monkey" - still distorted - sees Caribbean riddims and jungle sounds make for a sparse and ambient drum track.

Review: The mysterious WULF comes through with his debut for Tribe 12 Music, an imprint reserved for the more headsy end of bass music around the European quarters. "Ego Dub" and a straight-up roller, a corner-dweller special featuring a heavy bassline, dubwise flutters and a loose percussion flex. On the B-side, "Refuse" man rains the dub tonality, but heads deeper into the wormhole thanks to a sleepy artillery of drums, and a grizzly bassline for that final 'crunch'. Recommended!
