Review: The second part to Jamaican Moonshine's 15-track heavy adventure into the finest contemporary dub sounds: Ranging from the incredible smoky soul of Hylo, Jago and Sleepy Time Ghost's "Concrete" to the loopy, far-out expansions of Kalbata's techno-referencing "Man God" via Adam Prescott's soundsystem primed "Kingdom", this represents future dub with matchless creative scope.

Review: Hotline continue to channel the most exciting sounds to be dissipating from the Bristol locale with their latest release a double pack from the mighty Ishan Sound! Chris Ebdon is evidently sitting on a wealth of Ishan Sound dubs with this double pack for Hotline following on from a self-titled Peng Sound release of a similar nature earlier this year. Presented in striking yellow, these six cuts find Ishan Sound working with the rolling vocal style of Rider Shafique, and sees Ebdon bring his more club-orientated style to the fore. Heavy steppers vibes through and through from the Young Echo man!

Cat: MS 024. Rel: 28 Mar 16
  1. Stay Calm (feat YT - Mungo Hi-Fi remix) (4:36)
  2. Earthwalker (Sekkleman remix) (5:12)
Review: Moonshine clearly can't let go of Subconscious, the 2013 album from Polish dubster Radikal Guru. Earlier this year, the label issued the Digitalizer Riddim 12", pairing up Subconcious highlight "Stay Calm" with a triplet of superb version excursions. Now that same YT-featuring cut appears on this rather dashing green 12", given the royal remix treatment by Glasgow's finest, Mungo's Hi-Fi. In the hands of this quartet, "Stay Calm" is transformed into a more conscious dubwise stepper and is complemented by the flipside take on "Earthwalker" by Sekkleman. Here the track is treated with all manner of delay, and boosted by some real sub heft.

  1. Gorgon Sound - "Find Jah Way"
  2. Dubkasm - "Find Jah Way" (version)
Review: Peng Sound revisit their highly sought after debut release. Just shy of two years old, it still rattles and hums with authentic dub warmth and drama. Gorgon Sound's original bubbles with bouncy heat as the bass modulations spring off the double-up kicks. Dubkasm's version is equally alluring as we're invited into a much wider space where guitar shots and other melodic elements are entwined into the mix. One timeless composition, two killer versions, if you weren't lucky enough to grab this first time round, you know what to do!

Review: UK techno veterans Mark Broom and James Ruskin first joined forces under The Fear Ratio alias back in 2011, delivering the inventive - and hugely enjoyable - IDM-meets-techno full-length, Light Box. Here they join forces once more for a follow-up that gleefully explores similar sonic territory, whilst throwing a few more influences - most notably experimental hip-hop and vintage electro - into the pot for good measure. The result is a hugely entertaining album that naturally doffs a cap to Skam Records' dystopian roots, as well as the heavyweight soundsystem throb of dubstep, the hypnotism of dub techno, and the crackling electronic wizardry of Autechre.

Review: Music from the young Joshua Leary has been sporadic since he emerged on a wave of YouTube hype at the tail end of 2011, with only the Kings and Them mixtape and this year's one-sided Duga-3release on Record Store Day, but given he received a production credit on Kanye West's Yeezus album last year his relative silence can be forgiven. As such the Waterfall EP represents perhaps Leary's first proper release, and it shows that he has come a long way since the early days of his career. Containing four tracks that bridge the gap between jungle, hip hop and ambient music, Waterfall is both delicate and savage in equal measure, especially on the closing title track, where plaintive piano and semi-automatic snares collide to thrilling effect.

  1. Be At His Command
  2. Vor Und Zuruck
Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.

Review: Though best known for their tech-house offerings, Berlin label Styrax have already dipped their toes in the murky world of bass with a release from Synkro last year, and now they turn to Ghostlight, a collaboration between Ghostek and Roof Light for more. "Tomorrow's Child" showcases a mastery of swung garage mechanics, dub textures and melancholy atmospherics. "Pretenders To A Crown Long" is characterised by its deep subs recalling classic dubstep, while "Saboteur" is a more rolling affair, pulsing with deep low-end and spectral ambience.

Review: Australian bass HQ Aquatic Lab invite Zed Bias for some low-hanging, sly-swinging Maddslinky dub fun. "Hammerhead" groans rather than rolls with its deep pressure rumbles. Ably paced with flutters of classic breaks, it's got the mood, energy and weight to stick across any dark genre from garage to tech. Speaking of tech, for a deeper bass pressure and leaner aesthetic jump straight on Bardeya's flip for added darkness.

Review: Dubkasm's digi-dub roots dig deep into the early 90s. Boosted into the future by fellow Bristolians Pinch, Appleblim and Headhunter, here we find them declaring "Victory" with this instantly show-stopping horn-heavy skanker. Laced with space and complete with myriad versions, a fine balance of meditative bass and mind-blowing sonic creativity is at play throughout. Those with a penchant for the abyss-levels of dub science should jump straight on "Verse IV". Hear that stretched horn sound and you'll soon understand why it's been sub-titled "Raw Piece". Review: Previous outings on the 10" white label series Ruff Cut have come from Killawatt, Kaiju and Send (Ipman and Killawatt) but there is no clue as yet who is behind this latest transmission. Regardless, if you have been following the label's intermittent releases you will feel the need to check these two cuts. Jah vibes abound in "Eazy Tek it Eazy", a dub-wise steppahs track that has Mariana Trench levels of deepness - we need to hear this one on a big rig! Oodles of delay greet your ears when "Word Sound And Power" swings into view, but there is more of a discernible beat to hang onto here.

Review: The mysterious Tremble has already appeared on Ruffcut before, his previous 10" being a gnarly blend of dubstep and pure bass delight, and he's up to the same tricks on this latest two-tracker. "Radix" sounds like the kind of dub version that Jah Shaka would play these days, except the beat is broken, shuffling, and the tones in its core are closer to the DMZ end of things, or even Livity Sound's output. "Chalice" follows the same sort of formula, but what is different here is the texture and sci-fi sounds surround the whirlpool of bass holding the track together. Rahh...

Review: Ruff Cuts! Strictly 10" styles! For the uninitiated, Ruff Cut was launched by Osiris Music back in 2013 as an intermittent platform for their roster to explore styles and sounds away from the main flex associated with Kryptic Mind's label. Tremble has become a key Ruff Cut artist, despite the lack of information out there, with this Far Wud 10" the third release on the label credited to the producer. Once again, Tremble delivers two cuts of dubwise stepper science with the spacious vibe of the title track just shading it for us. Dare we say it is Tremble's best work to date? Sure, let's run with that!

Review: The first single to be taken from Maya Jane Coles' new dub-minded Nocturnal Sunshine project, both "Take Me There" and "Never Too Late" explore the fertile pastures amid the tech/dub axis with garage-minded glee. The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. If you like these, you'll love the album.

  3. BBS Madness
Review: **REPRESS** Kicking off a self-motivated label as a vessel for his up-to-the-minute beats, Benton follows up releases for Box Clever and Black Box with this razor-sharp distillation of old skool rave touches and tight modern production. "The Callin" works around a tense break triggered at a teasing angle to keep the groove limber at all times, although unafraid to melt away into blissed out chords at the appropriate juncture. "Airtight" rides on a similar rhythmic roll, although the atmospherics spell this one out as an overall darker concern. "BBS Madness" lets a little techno bleed into the frame with an even more taut deployment of forthright drum hooks that cross neatly through a multitude of styles in what should make for a prime crossover cut.

Cat: SMR 010B. Rel: 02 Apr 12
  1. Stableface (Dark Sky remix)
  2. Stableface (Macc remix)
Review: Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

Review: With material from Hyetal, Bashmore, Headhunter, Joker and more in their discography, Soul Motive have established a reputation for seeking out the various strands of music blossoming both close by their Bristol HQ and far (Cosmin TRG has also featured on the label) Arriving at their eleventh release Soul Motive further indulge the sounds of local talent Coleco, a producer who contributed to one of the label's early, split releases and is now granted the full grip of a twelve inch. Lead track "Hypnagogia" takes it's cue from the loose percussive style of Shackleton, gradually weaving in a thumping half step groove and intoxicating layers of Eastern strings - accomplished stuff! On the flip Victoria Klewin adds her floating, slightly saturated vocal tones to the galloping mysticism of "Find Me."

  12. Bass Clef - "A Rail Is A Road & A Road Is A River"
Review: Back in 2010, Peverelist's Punch Drunk label released the Worth The Weight compilation, a collection of hard to find classics from Bristol's dubstep scene. In the years that have passed, dubstep has mutated, and so has Punch Drunk, with the classic dubstep sound giving way to something equally as likely to feature elements of house, techno and experimental music. It's this direction explored in the Worth The Weight Vol. 2: From The Edge, a 12-track compilation featuring tracks from the city and beyond. While Hodge and Tessela represent swung house and techno hybrids, Bass Clef and Ekoplekz are on hand to provide some strange analogue deviations, while Kahn and Zhou represent the city's Young Echo collective. With Pev himself, Andy Mac and Kowton delivering a remix of the classic "Roll With The Punches", this is an essential compilation for anyone with even a passing interest in the past few years of bass-centric UK music.

Review: Very few artists are digging as deep into dubstep's new chapter as creatively as Gantz. "Elmo Rehab" is a futuristic funeral dirge where emotions are mercifully kept intact thanks to the sound of someone enjoying a jumbo bag of Monster Munch. No, really. "Spooky Action At A Distance" takes us even deeper into this strange dystopian world by way of off-beat time signatures and paranoid arpeggios. As we move closer to the action we're shrouded in a scratchy, impenetrable jazz fog as a strange yearning vocal sample reminds us of how important context is. Highly limited, this one - like pretty much all Gantz creations - is a surefire keeper.

Take one listen to these distinctive blends and you'll understand why. "Afterlight" is a sludgy, slo-mo weave of chubby percussion and deep throat bass gurgles, "Azuma" is a much more stark rhythm homage with epic space between each sparse, icy element while "Zeg" completes the show with awesome staccato tribal drum drama and a tight, insistent rhythm riff. Addictive, heavy and unique.. Just the way Uprise like it.

The first, "Itinerant Magic", takes up the entire A-side and sees distorted everything calmed and controlled by a cosmically bleepy and arpeggiated synth. The B-side is too fast at 45rpm and too slow at 33rpm - or is it? "Jack The Dub" sounds like a busker freestyle junk-drumming on a busy street, while "Monkey" - still distorted - sees Caribbean riddims and jungle sounds make for a sparse and ambient drum track.

Review: Described in typically effusive terms as "lethal" by Mary Ann Hobbes, bass don AMIT returns with a second transmission on his AMAR imprint. Those of you who indulged in last summer's inaugural release on the label will need little extra incentive to indulge here, but curious parties new to the label read on. AMIT's knack for productions that are both delicate and dark is in full effect on lead track, where vocals from Rani offer a sense of fragility that's gradually consumed by the sheer bass weight of the production. "Mr Clark" meanwhile is a deliciously evil concoction of brutal percussion, rebellious bass and haunting echoed vocals from Nomine. Rani appears once more on the dubwise "Your Native God" whilst "Daaku" finds AMIT discarding with collaborations for a dark tribal skanker!
