Cat: MS 028. Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. Ruling Sound (4:55)
  2. Ruling Dub (4:59)
  3. Ruling Sound (TMSV remix) (5:00)
Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

  1. Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
  2. Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
  3. Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
  4. Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

  2. Lightman (feat Baptiste - Dread remix)
  3. 18 Dromilly Ave (feat Serocee)
Review: Deep dubstep Aussie style, Sekkleman steps forth with two crisp originals for the Moonshine Recordings label. "Lightman" is a graveyard marauder as Baptiste's well applied vocal guides us through the tombs and vaults with clarity. "18 Dromilly Ave Dub" leans back on a classic digidub flex with warm keys, captivating vocal licks from Serocee and deep space reverb and drums that evolve faster than technology. Remix-wise Dread flips "Lightman" into an incredible Om Unit-style dub & bass workout. Step towards the light, man.

  3. Computer Sound (4:39)
Review: Soloman Rose aka Silkie returns for Deep Medi; the dubstep label run by Mala of Digital Mystikz, while in addition appearing on labels as diverse as Antisocial Entertainment, Soul Jazz and Skream's Disfigured Dubz. This follows up last month's wicked Topper Top EP and it's more of the same street level, low end theories once again. Starting out with the wonky, thumping, horns-led stomp of the title track, there's more quality on offer with "Jah Man" and its proper low end snarl, supported by hypnotic chime pads. On the flip, get ready for the straight up and bouncy grime stylings of "Computer Sound" serving up some late night pirate radio vibes for sure.

  3. FaltyDL - "Sunday"
  4. Benga - "I Come From London"
  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

  1. Seagulls (4:22)
  2. French Toasty (3:32)
Review: Literally gully: one of Sleeper's most demanded dubs of the year finally gets a vinyl tease. A huge track in mixes and dances like Control and Outlook, its whining, cawing riff really does resemble the oily air-rats and does so with an authentic mid 2000s stripped back rawness. "French Toasty" runs point with a more futurist feel to the energy as different layers of percussion twist around the woozy middy riff with hypnotic, whirling results. Lean.

  1. JAK FOU (4:07)
  2. Loner (5:04)
Review: Start as you mean to go on: Rarefied launch with two truly memorable and experimental dub cuts from German bubbler Soukah. "JAK FOU" lulls with classical harp instrumentation, deliciously off-beat drums and some really tripped out FX. "Loner" is no less forward-thinking but applies its innovation in a much more chilling, isolating way. All iced out pads and creepy textures, vinyl was made for weighty constructions like this.

  6. Synthetic (4:38)
Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

Review: You sometimes get the feeling Tectonic boss Rob 'Pinch' Ellis finds particular enjoyment in the process of collaboration, be it with younger artists such as Roska and Mumdance or more iconic names like Shackleton and Adrian Sherwood. The latter dub pioneer first hooked up with Pinch for a brace of excellent 12"s on his long running On U Sound label back in 2013, and the clear studio chemistry shown there made the notion of a joint LP a near certainty. Late Night Endless sees ten tracks from Sherwood's deep discography deconstructed by the pair, with the resultant fusion a deft balance of Pinch's urban paranoia and Sherwood's interstellar dub. On tracks like "Gimme Some More (Tight Like That)" and "Different Eyes" it's displayed with devastating mastery!

Review: By the time he released his superb debut album Changes in 2015, Joe McBride AKA Syknro already had a seven-year career behind him, with releases on the likes of Med School, Smokin' Sessions, Box Clever and Z Audio to his name. Memories 2008-2011 gathers together some of the highlights from the producer's formative years, showcasing his deliciously hard-to-pigeonhole style. Take a quick skip through the clips of the two-disc selection, and you'll find confirmed garage rollers, soft-focus ambient/two-step fusions, dreamy but bass-heavy electronica, post-dubstep drowsiness, hazy future funk, and a gaggle of workouts that defy easy categorization. It acts as a neat reminder of McBride's unique musical voice and production skills,
