  1. Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
  2. Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
  3. Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
  4. Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
  5. Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
  6. Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

  1. Meditation (5:26)
  2. Meditation (instrumental) (5:27)
Review: Dean Blunt and Arca are back to reign in 2016 with their Babyfather alias, a moody and spectral style of theirs that digs deep into the science of low hertz. The release comes on Kode-9's mythical Hyberdub label, and it's as fitting as one would think: experimental beat structures and odd sonics blend to form a forward-thinking dance sound. "Meditation" is a stuttering, quasi 4/4 groove powered by a grizzly level of bass, and an artillery of black comedy voices spewing from all angles. It's a true UK hybrid, and it is honestly one of our favourite things to come from the label in a while; check the instrumental for a further dosage of weighty percussion. Recommended.

  1. The Callin'
  2. Airtight
  3. BBS Madness
Review: **REPRESS** Kicking off a self-motivated label as a vessel for his up-to-the-minute beats, Benton follows up releases for Box Clever and Black Box with this razor-sharp distillation of old skool rave touches and tight modern production. "The Callin" works around a tense break triggered at a teasing angle to keep the groove limber at all times, although unafraid to melt away into blissed out chords at the appropriate juncture. "Airtight" rides on a similar rhythmic roll, although the atmospherics spell this one out as an overall darker concern. "BBS Madness" lets a little techno bleed into the frame with an even more taut deployment of forthright drum hooks that cross neatly through a multitude of styles in what should make for a prime crossover cut.

  1. Freakshow (feat Danny Brown & Kiki Hitomi)
  2. Louder (feat Flowdan)
  3. Dirty (feat Flowdan)
  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

  1. King Lion (Kahn remix) (4:46)
  2. King Lion (5:35)
Review: Bunzer0 continues to spin the rich circle of life with "King Lion", a demonically spacious deep dub gem. Twisting the genre's standard halftime drum dynamic with bellows of room amid the anvil kicks, cheek-melting snares and nightmare-level vocal processes. Kahn gets busy on the remix, filling up the space with gunnish militancy. Like an army of robots marching into the apocalypse, this is one of Kahn's heaviest shake-ups to date. Unique.

  1. Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
  2. Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
  3. Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
  4. Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.
