  4. Digid & Dubbing Sun - "Dread Come Again" (Egoless remix) (4:13)
Review: Albion Collective don't release very often. But when they do... Magic happens. Following 12"s from Taiko and Vaun & Jafu comes this superb double-up from Digid and friends. The Belgian kicks things off with an all-out chubby skank "Rainbow Dub". Big and riffy and just the right amount of groove, it's an Outlook anthem in waiting. "Come Dung" follows suit with a lower-toned bassline and beats that shuffle so loosely they drag their knuckles. Joining him on the B is Austrian Dubbing Sun for the heavily sprung "Dread Come Again" while Egoless brings matters to a halt with an exceptional plucked bass stepper. Beautiful.

  1. Burn Baphomet (5:07)
  2. Les 12 Colonnes (4:58)
Review: Jerome Meyer AKA Von D has been on fire in 2017. This two-tracker for Amar follows hot on the heels of acclaimed 12" singles on Khaliphonic, Reflektion Tapes, Moonshine Recordings and Lion Charge. A-side "Burn Baphomet" sees the producer continue his mission to fuse the low slung, heavyweight sub pressure and angular electronics of dubstep with the relentless feedback trails, bouncy delay and ricocheting Melodica lines of classic Jamaican dub. He ups the tempo a little on similarly minded but altogether bolder B-side "Les 12 Colonnes", which arguably sails even closer to pure dub territory than its predecessor.

Review: Piezo is Luca Mucci, an Italian producer and DJ currently based in Bristol, UK. This release is limited to 300 copies and inaugurates the new label Ansia in great style. On the A side we have the stripped back and bass heavy bounce of "Gattomatto" which is as deep as it is serious. On the flip, we have the polyrhythmic and almost tribal stomp of "Cala" which is quite reminiscent of the oddball grooves Ramadanman was churning out several years ago; we really dug this jam! Very much looking forward to what this promising producer has in store for us all next!

Review: OG slimer Silkie takes us out on the town and drinks us under the table. "Drunken Master" chugs a lug with its oddball bass ruffles and creepy arpeggio layers building and building, "Why Not" is the quintessential brandy chaser, easing you in smoothly with his signature funk before warming your chest with darker bass tones. Brought together with Silkie's trademark talkbox finesse, the only woozy after effects will be a love hangover. Blessy.

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

  2. Hammerhead (Bardeya remix) (6:09)
Review: Australian bass HQ Aquatic Lab invite Zed Bias for some low-hanging, sly-swinging Maddslinky dub fun. "Hammerhead" groans rather than rolls with its deep pressure rumbles. Ably paced with flutters of classic breaks, it's got the mood, energy and weight to stick across any dark genre from garage to tech. Speaking of tech, for a deeper bass pressure and leaner aesthetic jump straight on Bardeya's flip for added darkness.

Terror (12")
Cat: ARTKL 027. Rel: 07 Aug 17
  1. Terror (4:44)
  2. Industrial (6:14)
Review: Kosheen member Mark Morrison re-emerged last year with a new dubstep-focused alias, Markee Ledge. Having seen a new generation of DJs lap up his debut release on Tempa (and a couple of similarly impressive follow-up EPs), he's naturally keen to ram home his advantage. Hence this fine two track collaboration with Tempa stalwart Youngsta. The experienced duo hits the mark with "Terror", where unflinchingly heavy sub-bass and weighty analogue thrusts punch through atmospheric textures, paranoid vocal samples and a stripped-back but punchy rhythm track. The duo's love of dub is explored in greater detail on the more traditional dubstep shuffle of "Industrial", whose title was seemingly inspired by their choice of metallic background effects.

Cat: ASK 0012. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. Ask Yourself (remix) (4:54)
Review: Near mythical version of a Plastikman classic from a man who'll remain unnamed, "Ask Yourself" enjoys a rare repress and you'd be wise not to sleep on it. Retaining all the alien isolation and spooked out allure of the original but with rolling drums and a sub powerful enough to heat the whole of Croydon, this remains a matchless piece of remix craft. No questions asked.

Review: Lighta! Sound and its crew of artists are largely credited with bringing dubstep and UK bass music into Vancouver's consciousness. Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

Review: San Diego's vinyl-only bass purveyors Banana Stand Sound return with one of their most all-encompassing EPs to date. Full spectrum services on offer: OH91 sets the tone with a smouldering sub sesh on "Meditation", Nights & Aerotonin fire up the grime hole with the aggy, cutty "Jazz Licks" and TryTryDieDown lets loose on a sharply edited juke-style jam "Boo". Denver's Crix Saiz finishes with a deep throaty one-fingered salute. Genuinely unique.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Review: It's been a strong year for Balkan badman Egoless who pulled in a whole new field of ears with his insanely on-point ska cover of Benga & Coki's "Night". "I'm From The Bakans" is a great showcase of his leftfield weight. The title track is an ardent reminder that we still have heaps of room to experiment in drums and textures with rhythm combinations that sound like no other. "Psychonautilus" is powered by creepy dreams. All wonky, foggy and freaky - if Nicolas Jaar did dub, he wouldn't sound too far from this. "Uck Foff" keeps us in the dense mists as thick atmospheres are broken but a strangely shuffling beat and unpredictable mechanical bass tones. No one is doing it like Egoless.

Review: MC of the moment Rider Shafique takes a trip down Egyptian Avenue, barging down the doors of the one and only Epoch. The result is a Blacklisted banger of toxic proportions. With a freeform low end creeping under the radar, there's stacks of space for Rider to really get into his flow before momentum picks up in the third minute. Flip for a stuttering, tripped out ghetto twist on "Dust" from Artillery and lock down every aerial in a 20 mile radius.

Review: Blacklist hit release number five and it's the label bossman doing what he does best: taking us down dark paths on twisted, subverted adventures we didn't even know existed. "Space Horror" bundles us into the boot of a rusty old rocket and speeds down the backstreets of Omicron Persei 8 where the drums slouch along the slimy alleys and bassline groan and fall out of dark corners. "Walk On Lava" sees us being chucked out of the spaceship from a great height into the eye of a volcano. With blistering kicks and a tense acid line, will we make it out on time or will our geese get cooked? There's only way to find out...

Two tracks and two tonnes heavy; "The Veil" mangles theatre with heavy industry and outer planetary communication while "Slang Suffocate" takes us back to a fuzzier bass texture with its pranged out creepy carnie melody that raises roofs and neck hairs within seconds of the needle dropping. Immense.

Review: Literally gully: one of Sleeper's most demanded dubs of the year finally gets a vinyl tease. A huge track in mixes and dances like Control and Outlook, its whining, cawing riff really does resemble the oily air-rats and does so with an authentic mid 2000s stripped back rawness. "French Toasty" runs point with a more futurist feel to the energy as different layers of percussion twist around the woozy middy riff with hypnotic, whirling results. Lean.

Review: Last spotted on Sleeper's Crucial a year ago, Los Angelo Oxossi returns with four more frenzied fusions. "Escher" gobbles down on classical rudiments and spits them back out in a fiery, unpredictable meld that genuinely sounds like no other, "&" pays homage to the jazz foundations while "Fall Of Mevia" takes us into deeper psychedelic pastures as a gothic arpeggio wafts and curls around an industrial strength halfstep. Finally "Nightmares" takes us out in the more experimental oceans with a twisted time signature and seasick, woozy bass experience. Like everything on Crucial, this is seriously one of a kind.

Review: This 12" not only marks the debut of Crystal Recordings, but also hyped duo Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem, AKA experienced grime producers JFO and Sativa. The Manchester-based pairing hits the ground running with title track "Gully Side", an impressively intoxicating fusion of deep dubstep rhythms, grime attitude, spooky synthesized strings and speaker-rattling sub-bass posturing. They impressively mix things up on superior flipside "Distant Riddim", where an exotic, snaking melody line wraps itself around a stabbing sub-bass pattern and razor-sharp grime beats. Throw in occasional MC vocal samples, and you have a weighty concoction that's as musically inspiring as it is floor-friendly.

Here we find him on some of his darkest and most captivating touches so far as he builds on the Deep Dark & Dangerous signature; on the weightier side "Sakura" has a richter-rocking grumble of a bassline and "Point Blank" pings and ricochets with a cosmic two-step while on the more introspective side "Eclipse" flutters and twinkles over a sludgy subby bass and "Regret" yearns and mourns with subtle chords and lashings of dubspace and lingering percussion. Quintessential DDD.

In this time, Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake have spread the Truth gospel for dubstep heads with further releases on Firepower, Tempa, Boka and more. War Of The Minds sees Truth back on Deep Medi for the duo's first 12" of 2016 replete with some eye-catching cover art from m7grafiks. From the opening sub heave and lolloping rollage of "Jade Helm" you can tell Fernandez and Roake made these cuts with Deep Medi in mind, honing in successfully on a very specific mood. The brute force bass of "With Us" and the Werd2Jag guesting title cut are the pick here.

"Devotion" takes us much deeper under oceanic swathes of atmospheric pads, far-away strings and distant halftime beats. From the dance to dirge, Epoch has created something truly special here.

As with previous outings together, it's an enveloping sea of shades ranging from the woozily bent and cascading tones of "Leaper" that almost slime off the beats to the bleary flute loop that's mangled with precision levels of uplift on "Mysticism". Deep dubstep of the highest calibre here. Just listen to A side cut "Pourin' Up With Dolphin Tears". This dope and paranoid cut will work well for the late night: you can almost hear the lighter going off in the background. "Rollin Thru Thicc" rolls deep through walls of warm low end frequency and blunted beats. On the flip, the wonky and grimey "Sippin Skooma" closes out this fine EP in style. Featuring plays from Noisia, Truth, N Type and Antiserum to name but a few.

Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Ashes Fall (12")
Cat: FAV 004. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Tetrad & Ahkur - "Ashes Fall" (5:31)
  2. Tetrad - "Crumble" (6:09)

Kingdom Dub EP (12" limited to 300 copies)

"Drainpipe" seals the deal on a trippy note where the rhythmic elements have been slow cooked to a squishy malleable texture. You know what to do...
