  1. Hyph Mngo
  2. Wet Look
Review: It's almost five years since the immense Hyph Mngo announced the talents of Joy Orbison to the world and a lot has changed in this time - not least the musical direction of Scuba's Hotflush label. One of several early Hotflush releases that have been granted a timely repress, the first thing that hits you listening back to "Hyph Mngo" is 'did it ever get revealed how to pronounce it?' We jest, actually it's amazing how powerful a production it still is, and arguably one of the tracks that helped bring about the shift from traditional dubstep to what many now refer to as UK BASS. B Side "Wet Look" can still cause a bit of dancefloor commotion too, you know! A must for those that never got this 12" first time round.

Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.

If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

  2. Icicle - "Anything"
  3. FaltyDL - "Sunday"
  4. Benga - "I Come From London"
  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Kindred EP (12")
Cat: HDB 059. Rel: 12 Mar 12
  1. Kindred
  2. Loner
  3. Ashtray Wasp
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Given that his sound has now been referenced, copied and bastardised by countless imitators, is testament to Burial's enduring appeal that the announcement of a new EP on a Sunday in Febuary was enough to shake the online music press out of their collective stupors. As an EP it more than stands up to his previous work, and it may even be better than last year's Street Halo EP - where the brilliance of the title track left the EP quite top-heavy, there's no such complaints on Kindred. If UK garage was the touchpoint for his earlier releases, this EP sees Burial further developing a sound that has few obvious points of comparison, whether it's the savage, gnarled bassline of the title track, or the shambling house of "Loner", characterized by its hollowed out arpeggio and ambient crackle. But it's "Ashtray Wasp" that provides the most breathtaking moment, seeing the producer using the distinct musical language he's created and bringing confident melodic elements into play. Of course such descriptions seem trivial when trying to describe this EP - even for Burial it's far beyond what his peers and imitators could ever imagine making.

Stableface EP Pt 2

Cat: SMR 010B. Rel: 02 Apr 12
  1. Stableface (Dark Sky remix)
  2. Stableface (Macc remix)
Review: Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

  2. Find Me (feat Victoria Klewin)
Review: With material from Hyetal, Bashmore, Headhunter, Joker and more in their discography, Soul Motive have established a reputation for seeking out the various strands of music blossoming both close by their Bristol HQ and far (Cosmin TRG has also featured on the label) Arriving at their eleventh release Soul Motive further indulge the sounds of local talent Coleco, a producer who contributed to one of the label's early, split releases and is now granted the full grip of a twelve inch. Lead track "Hypnagogia" takes it's cue from the loose percussive style of Shackleton, gradually weaving in a thumping half step groove and intoxicating layers of Eastern strings - accomplished stuff! On the flip Victoria Klewin adds her floating, slightly saturated vocal tones to the galloping mysticism of "Find Me."

  1. Sunday Service
  2. Mernom
  3. Dourado
  4. Octafish
Review: Harem is the fourth release for Old Apparatus on their own Sullen Tone imprint, and the third to come from an individual member of the collective. This time it's the turn of Harem, who also lends their name to the release and provides one of the label's most atmospheric releases to date. "Sunday Service" places spectral female vocals in a desolate soundscape, while "Mernom" continues the funereal atmospherics with lumbering beats and acoustic instrumentation placed within a vast echo chamber. "Dourado" offers the most propulsive cut of the EP, with galloping drums and deep subs providing a steampunk take on classic dubstep, leaving "Octafish" to round off another superlative EP with a brooding combination of scorched strings and distant, simmering percussion.

  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: It's finally landed. Word of this driving slab of pneumatic techno-teased dubstep first emerged on FatKidOnFire in the spring of 2012. Powered by a pulsating heartbeat bass warp, enveloping synth washes and relentless rhythm dynamic that simply won't quit, it comes complete with a distinctive sitar hook that refuses to leave your ears for years. It's complemented by an equally disarming remix from TMSV where a snake-like percussion line takes the lead and the elements are dragged into a swamp of rich sub bass. Get scavenging as soon as you.

Breath (limited 12")
Cat: AIR. Rel: 27 Jan 14
  1. Breath
  2. Lungs
Review: Where to place Weevil Neighbourhood? Is this dub techno? Perhaps. Dubstep? Maybe. Drum and bass? Sometimes. Experimental? Yes: in the truest sense of the word. It draws from all these aforementioned styles and more, resulting in the formation of a reclusive German label breaking the framework of many electronic music genres wide open. The title-track from Anthone's second EP for the label is where the dub techno suggestion comes from thanks to its caustic chord sequences, only there's flashes of dubstep beat designs and loose drum and bass textures similar to what can be heard on Felix K's Flowers Of Destruction. On the flip, "Lungs" is instrumental and live feeling. In parts it sounds like a band playing, while in others you can here the work of samplers looping, and when combined, it offers an industrial soundscape that's like merging some of the darker rock and metal stylings from Sex Tags No Amfibia with Regis' Sandra Electronics project, only reduced to the point of almost being ambient.

  4. Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Also known as Germany's Next Top Wobble, Bukez Finezt has taken things next level with "Under Control". Hyped across the board (from deep heads to tear-out boys) as one of the key releases of 2014 so far, this sub-saturated swagger-jam has an ability to sing to all corners of the ever-fractured dubstep floor. Want to go deeper again? Head for "You Don't Belong Here". Wonkier than a wooden legged pirate with gout, it's peppered with spooked SFX and a bass tone so ominous it could raise the Devil himself, Bukez clearly has a dark, dark mind! Finally we hit "Pace Yourself". A percussive hype track with a very cheeky horn sample, all manner of madness has been coded into the vast space between the elements. Minimalist chaos anyone?

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

Review: Pitter-patter party piece from early 2013, XXXY's bubblesome future garage cut gets a repress from Pollen... "Rain" is all about the subverted two-step and washed out synth splashes that trickle down the vibe pensively. Meanwhile on the B, Jack Sparrow flips the vibe with upbeat shuffle-drums and a palpitating bassline that drives the vibe with subtle but effective drama. A worthwhile revisit; grab it if you missed it first time around.

Review: Deep dubstep Aussie style, Sekkleman steps forth with two crisp originals for the Moonshine Recordings label. "Lightman" is a graveyard marauder as Baptiste's well applied vocal guides us through the tombs and vaults with clarity. "18 Dromilly Ave Dub" leans back on a classic digidub flex with warm keys, captivating vocal licks from Serocee and deep space reverb and drums that evolve faster than technology. Remix-wise Dread flips "Lightman" into an incredible Om Unit-style dub & bass workout. Step towards the light, man.

Review: Prolific South London producer Kromestar has been a celebrated name on the dubstep circuit for the best part of a decade, dropping acclaimed singles on a wide variety of labels, including Hotflush, Deep Medi and Dubstar. Here he debuts on the brand new Nebula Music Group imprint, delivering a veritable assault on the senses in the shape of "Monster" - all ragged, pulverizing wobble bass, cheeky rave vocal stabs and massive, reverb-laden beats. It sounds like the sort of record that will be greeted with rapturous cheers when dropped at up-coming summer festivals. Flipside "Despite" is an altogether deeper concoction, with classic dubstep rhythms and heavy dub bass being joined by spooky melodies and spitting electronics.

Review: The first single to be taken from Maya Jane Coles' new dub-minded Nocturnal Sunshine project, both "Take Me There" and "Never Too Late" explore the fertile pastures amid the tech/dub axis with garage-minded glee. The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. If you like these, you'll love the album.

"Devotion" takes us much deeper under oceanic swathes of atmospheric pads, far-away strings and distant halftime beats. From the dance to dirge, Epoch has created something truly special here.

Regardless, if you have been following the label's intermittent releases you will feel the need to check these two cuts. Jah vibes abound in "Eazy Tek it Eazy", a dub-wise steppahs track that has Mariana Trench levels of deepness - we need to hear this one on a big rig! Oodles of delay greet your ears when "Word Sound And Power" swings into view, but there is more of a discernible beat to hang onto here.
