Cat: BS 005. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. OH91 - "Meditation" (4:38)
  2. Nights & Aerotonin - "Jazz Lick" (4:41)
  3. TryTryDieDown - "Boo" (3:33)
  4. Crix Saiz - "Warriah" (4:41)
Review: San Diego's vinyl-only bass purveyors Banana Stand Sound return with one of their most all-encompassing EPs to date. Full spectrum services on offer: OH91 sets the tone with a smouldering sub sesh on "Meditation", Nights & Aerotonin fire up the grime hole with the aggy, cutty "Jazz Licks" and TryTryDieDown lets loose on a sharply edited juke-style jam "Boo". Denver's Crix Saiz finishes with a deep throaty one-fingered salute. Genuinely unique.

Cat: FAV 004. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Tetrad & Ahkur - "Ashes Fall" (5:31)
  2. Tetrad - "Crumble" (6:09)
Review: LA not-so-confidential: Tetrad has been developing a strong reputation for slick sub aesthetics for a little while now, appearing on labels such as Sublimate and Sure State. Now bringing his emerging friend and sonic kindred spirit Ahkur along for the ride, the result is the smoke-stacked, toxic bass croaker that's "Ashes Fall", a powerful piece of darkness designed for 3am and later. "Crumble" sees Tetrad back on the solo flex with a sweet sub that sits behind everything anonymously until it starts to flop out behind the kicks in a dizzying, almost physical way. Authentic.

Cat: RARE 2. Rel: 06 Mar 17
  1. Shivering (4:15)
  2. Gwari (4:44)
Review: Grab a blanket or a big coat; this one's cold... Following his well-received "Future" EP on Foundation (and releases on the likes of Encrypted and Indigo Movement), Zygos delivers two more pulsating, floor-focussed constructions. "Shivering" will rippled your skin to its bones with the cascading paranoid textures trickling down a wholly wet groove. "Gwari" steps even deeper into the dance with a rolling drum arrangement, palpitating basses, tight percussion and eerie pipes that fuses with serious hypnosis. Both Zygos and Rarefied are making serious statements here.

Review: Lighta! Sound and its crew of artists are largely credited with bringing dubstep and UK bass music into Vancouver's consciousness. Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

F_ck Mountain (12" repress)
Cat: HOTLINE 004. Rel: 27 Feb 17
  1. F_ck Mountain (4:22)
  2. Good Grief (4:37)
Review: ** hotline repress ** Hotline Recordings is fast becoming one of Bristol's most vital vinyl-only imprints, delivering various strands of low-end heavy music from Kahn & Neek, Lurka and Rachael across its three releases so far. The latest piece of wax to be revealed via their voicemail service is from Commodo, a producer whose previous outings for labels like Deep Medi and Black Box have shown him to be one of the more reliable young artists currently holding the torch for the classic dubstep sound. As such the F_ck Mountain/Good Grief 12? is a stark contrast to the Sotofett jungle remix of the label's last release from Rachael, with a return to the kind of sound last heard on Lurka's plate for Hotline. "F_ck Mountain" sees Commodo in more familiar 140BPM territory a "lean take on original dubstep" on the A-side pitching and yawing around the rudest of basslines," while "Good Grief" has more in common with the work of Beneath and Alex Coulton, coming described as "a pneumatic sprung weapon that bounces in around the 130 mark".

  1. Mizz Beats & Von D - "Dot Compulsion" (6:35)
  2. Mr Lager & Von D - "Some Other Place" (4:08)
Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.

Review: Featuring the vocals of a certain British soul legend (R.I.P.), new Rarefied sister label, Rarefied Black take it back underground with "Stronger", a proper deep dubstep joint the way it always intended. Light one up and surrender to the void while listening to this classic in the making. Some proper low-end theories from the dark side explored on this killer. Get it while it's hot!

Review: On his first full EP release and already steeped in praise from Duploc and Trusik, US newcomer Inyoka is making all the right noises. Here are four cases in point: the tripped out vocal sample dynamic on the VIP of "Echidna", the spacey funk and slurring soul of "LIA", the groaning, unsettling harmonic machine tones and sudden human vocal splash of "Program" and the rolling tech-laced stepper "Peregrine", Inyoka has set out his stall with clarity. We can't wait to hear what he brings next.

Review: Have a word... Youngsta's launched a brand new vinyl-only label and DBridge launches it. Need we say more? Both "Fashion Dread" and "Digital Dread" are Darren White at his darkest and most stately - elephantine production, moody and misty and ultimately soaked in beautifully warm bass, both cuts have been doing the rounds on dubs for almost two years and have been in demand since Youngsta debuted them. Simply massive. Get on these quickly.

Review: Keeping it loose as we wade into a new year, Encrypted Audio ask Japan's Karnage back for more faraway jams. As with previous outings together, it's an enveloping sea of shades ranging from the woozily bent and cascading tones of "Leaper" that almost slime off the beats to the bleary flute loop that's mangled with precision levels of uplift on "Mysticism". In between we have the industrial strength "SOL" which sounds like a steel foundry melted into a waveform. Powerful.

Review: This Turkish dubstep producer is on fire at the moment with appearances on Deep Medi and that awesome collaboration with Commodo and Kahn that got loads of people talking earlier in the year. He now serves up The tough bounce and wobble of "Tut Tut Situation" which is the street level sound of Istanbul representing good and proper; new bass frontiers explored on this one for sure. On the flip, we've got the gnarly underground anthem "Love & Acid" slithering then bashing away beneath layers of distortion and saturation on this savage, lo-fi groove.

  1. Ruling Sound (4:55)

Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

  1. System Test (original mix) (5:58)
  2. 3-D (3:54)
Review: In the nine years since he first appeared on the scene, Kromestar has released a ridiculous amount of music, most of which is pretty darn good. He's scaled things back a bit this year, mind; amazingly, System Test is only his third 12" of the year. Sitting somewhere between classic dubstep, trap, 8-bit and grime, the title track features fuzzy, tumbling electronic lines, fizzing bleeps, deep space sci-fi synths, and, of course, the kind of sub that should make any bass-head go weak at the knees. Flipside "3-D" redresses the balance by emphasizing the sparkling electronic motifs and retro game melodies, though it's still a suitably sizeable floor-filler.

Review: Now on their eight release, J.Robinson's TheMostHigh continues to mystify, murk and master the game with its mysterious dispatches. "Lessons" continues the high grade sub strain message with a heavy pressure bassline and shattering reverbed snares, downpitched vocals and excursions into tripped out FX. Look out for the sudden shards of skank cutting through the dubby fog with sunlight vibrancy... Only to disappear without a trace moments later. A little like these limited pressings.

Review: Literally gully: one of Sleeper's most demanded dubs of the year finally gets a vinyl tease. A huge track in mixes and dances like Control and Outlook, its whining, cawing riff really does resemble the oily air-rats and does so with an authentic mid 2000s stripped back rawness. "French Toasty" runs point with a more futurist feel to the energy as different layers of percussion twist around the woozy middy riff with hypnotic, whirling results. Lean.

Review: Soloman Rose aka Silkie returns for Deep Medi; the dubstep label run by Mala of Digital Mystikz, while in addition appearing on labels as diverse as Antisocial Entertainment, Soul Jazz and Skream's Disfigured Dubz. This follows up last month's wicked Topper Top EP and it's more of the same street level, low end theories once again. Starting out with the wonky, thumping, horns-led stomp of the title track, there's more quality on offer with "Jah Man" and its proper low end snarl, supported by hypnotic chime pads. On the flip, get ready for the straight up and bouncy grime stylings of "Computer Sound" serving up some late night pirate radio vibes for sure.

Review: Scene sergeant Youngsta returns with his first full release in years. Tag-teaming with rising producer Cimm, the vibe is deep, roomy and constructed with a stately, unhurried alien funk. Every element considered and fine-tuned, both tracks take us deep into a meditative mindset without ever pressing the snooze button: "Split Minds" rolls with bass tones so warm they almost bounce while "Redshift" takes us into an even dubbier pasture with some great attention paid to the sporadic rhythm elements. Beautiful.

Review: Piezo is Luca Mucci, an Italian producer and DJ currently based in Bristol, UK. This release is limited to 300 copies and inaugurates the new label Ansia in great style. On the A side we have the stripped back and bass heavy bounce of "Gattomatto" which is as deep as it is serious. On the flip, we have the polyrhythmic and almost tribal stomp of "Cala" which is quite reminiscent of the oddball grooves Ramadanman was churning out several years ago; we really dug this jam! Very much looking forward to what this promising producer has in store for us all next!

Review: Chow down! Joe Nice invites Poland fusioneer EshOne over to Maryland for guest chef duties. Two courses: the main dish "Corked" is a sloppy, soupy sub brew with minimal percussive sides, its sweet bass aftertaste on every mouthful countered by a sinewy electro sharpness. Dessert is "Teleport", a deconstructed sonic souffle cooked purely with melted machines and strange angles. Whirring and whirling into the deepest, most unknown corners of flavour country. Bon appetit.

Review: Brand new label from Kadet P but you need to act fast... Only 150 of these puppies have been pressed and there's no promise of a repress. Deep Medi affiliate K Man ghosts on the A-side with all his phantom charm as "PWM" staggers and daggers between two crisp bass textures, both rising in urgency and groove throughout. Kadet takes the B with a deep-dreamy sub weave that's hazy and psychedelic one minute and tripped out beyond reality the next. This is how you do a label launch.

Review: Near mythical version of a Plastikman classic from a man who'll remain unnamed, "Ask Yourself" enjoys a rare repress and you'd be wise not to sleep on it. Retaining all the alien isolation and spooked out allure of the original but with rolling drums and a sub powerful enough to heat the whole of Croydon, this remains a matchless piece of remix craft. No questions asked.

Review: Amit's AMAR imprint continues its consistent run of fresh 140 form with New Zealand dub-wiser Akcept. Easing us in with crisp keys, we're soon introduced to his spacious sense of groove and lean instrumentation as "Peace Pipe" lurks and lingers before a lavish horn sample hits midway. "The Streets" takes us further down Akcept's melodic rabbit hole as Clinton Sly spits and sermons over a more colourful version of the riddim. "Insight" takes the prize for heaviest dancefloor cut with a bouncing sub line that tramples with abandon beneath a flow of dubby FX and textures. Playful but ultimately deep and dark, these guys aren't mucking around.

Review: It's been a strong year for Balkan badman Egoless who pulled in a whole new field of ears with his insanely on-point ska cover of Benga & Coki's "Night". "I'm From The Bakans" is a great showcase of his leftfield weight. The title track is an ardent reminder that we still have heaps of room to experiment in drums and textures with rhythm combinations that sound like no other. "Psychonautilus" is powered by creepy dreams. All wonky, foggy and freaky - if Nicolas Jaar did dub, he wouldn't sound too far from this. "Uck Foff" keeps us in the dense mists as thick atmospheres are broken but a strangely shuffling beat and unpredictable mechanical bass tones. No one is doing it like Egoless.

Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since the gully Frenchman we know and love as Monsieur Von D shared an exceptional release with Egoless and already he's back. This time he's on Infernal Sounds, which is already proof of its quality - considering how selective and detail-oriented the label have been since launching two years ago. "Cross Of Hendaye" is a solid mechanical roller with heaps of human funk coded into the waspy bassline. "Remember" is a straight up homage to the early days with a sub that palpitates so heavily and tangibly your own heartbeat will sync within seconds. True to the craft.

Naturally he's smashed it: "Too Much Terror" is a molten machine of funk and sci-fi signature whole "Bwoy" lowers the tempo temperature with a dancehall-inspired drum arrangement and dubby vocal textures. Both direct for the dance.

Review: Estonian dub conceptualist Bisweed continues his fantasy narrative with "Steampunk Vol 2" a four track saga that sounds as rich and colourful as the artwork suggests. "Aurora Borealis" twinkles with every bit of space-gazing charm as you'd hope while "The Perfect Knowledge" is a defiant march into the unknown driven by a persistent slo-mo techno riff and Clockwork Orange synth orchestral dramatics. "Magnetic Field VIP" is an industrial strength update on his 2013 Paradise Lost cut while "Impedance" brings the story full circle with tumbling organic-feeling drums and a house-like bassline that bounces relentlessly. Steamy.

Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

With their industrial hip-hop swag, they create a momentum and feeling that's seldom found on a dubstep joint. Fresh but familiar; the same approach is applied on "Inland" as stretched tones create unease before drooping into rich pools of emotion. Again with the loopy hip-hop mentality, there's a reason Gourmet and FKOF picked up on Moonstones so quickly last year.

  1. Give Dem (4:59)
Review: Clandestine version business on a one sided 10" white label as "Give Dem" from Shabba Ranks' gets the 20,000 league deep subaquatic finish it's always needed but never deserved. Processing the vocals for a barbed, subtly demonic affect and emphasising the pure weight of the drums, whoever Themosthigh truly is, they're in a very special place right here.

  3. Wallwork & Nan Kole - "Fyah" (instrumental) (4:18)
Review: It's a house-grime marriage on Bristol's Black Acrel label, from newfound dup Wallwork and Nico Lindsay, the latter of the two bringing the vocal street swagger to the beats. The title track "Facts" is a big, bad, heavy slab of percussion and bass powered by Lindsay's curbside lyricism, and it's one of those tunes that's bound to get shit tarted in the dance. This is followed by the more kinetic flow of "Fyah", where Lindsay's vocals are more minimal than its predecessor, and its rough and rugged instrumental for maximum DJ damage. Another banging addition to the Black Acrew crew - yes!

  1. Sweetz (7:08)
Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.
