Kingwise (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: FLK 2. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Kingwise (6:06)
  2. Untitled (7:26)
  3. Flat 8 (6:34)
  4. Version 2 (7:04)
Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

  3. Malleus - "Invisigoth" (3:55)
  4. Malleus & Oxossi - "The Infinite Depth Of Woe" (4:33)
Review: Virginia b2b LA b2b vibes for miles; everything about this Innerverse 12" hits hard. Two men staring down the barrels of very exciting futures, Oxossi and Malleus build on their collective body of work on the likes of FKOF, Crucial, Gourmet and Silent Motion with four of their most powerful compositions. Together they give us the dazzling, arpeggiated blue moon spotter "Amongst The Hemlock" and the fractured funeral march "The Infinite Depth Of Woe" while individually Oxossi lays down bouncy Loefah-style haunted cathedral stepper in the form of "Don't Bitch" while Malleus takes us back to 2008 with a homage to the eyebrow shavers.

Cat: EF 005. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Mirage (8:48)
  2. Island Dub (8:01)
Review: Japanese junglist Ishio Dai presses up another Effective96 heavyweight handstamped white. Harnessing the magic of Skatalite's Jonny Moore on both sides, "Mirage" takes us deep into his own cloudy atmospheric universe upon a rolling jazz-minded drum arrangement while "Island Dub" strips everything right back to the crucial constituent parts to allow each rhythmic and dubbed element to sing. Singular.

Cat: SEN 002. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Stomp (4:39)
  2. Slip (4:53)
Review: Youngsta's Sentry returns with its sophomore session and it's just as hard-hitting, authentic and true to the craft as dBridge's launch release. No one does the no-rules bass game like Nomine and here we find him returning to a deep temp(a)plate that he helped to sculpt. "Stomp" is concentrated doom with deep pressured coded into the wandering sub, industrial swagger and slo-mo mentasms. "Slip" continues the weight and steel foundry clanging drums but with vapour trails of Oriental melody sliding and swooning above. Stunning material from one of the hardest working and talented men in the bass game.

  3. Dust (5:42)
Review: Erstwhile joker and Jo'burg journeyman, Escapism Refuge returns to Deep Heads off-shoot Smokin Sessions with three crystal cuts: "On The Fence" digs deep into classical dub mentality with its wandering sub and ebbing/flowing pads while "Almost Eight" plays counterpoint with a much darker dominant bassline and beats that lollop so much it could be a Dead Prez instrumental. "Dust" settles this smouldering sonic affair once and for all with cascading chords and a more garage-inclined drum pattern. Bliss.

  1. Burn Baphomet (5:07)
  2. Les 12 Colonnes (4:58)
Review: Jerome Meyer AKA Von D has been on fire in 2017. This two-tracker for Amar follows hot on the heels of acclaimed 12" singles on Khaliphonic, Reflektion Tapes, Moonshine Recordings and Lion Charge. A-side "Burn Baphomet" sees the producer continue his mission to fuse the low slung, heavyweight sub pressure and angular electronics of dubstep with the relentless feedback trails, bouncy delay and ricocheting Melodica lines of classic Jamaican dub. He ups the tempo a little on similarly minded but altogether bolder B-side "Les 12 Colonnes", which arguably sails even closer to pure dub territory than its predecessor.

Review: Last spotted fooling around on Crucial with Sleeper on "Fukka", LA's Mesck continues his thundering vein of form with a return to Chestplate. Two tracks and two tonnes heavy; "The Veil" mangles theatre with heavy industry and outer planetary communication while "Slang Suffocate" takes us back to a fuzzier bass texture with its pranged out creepy carnie melody that raises roofs and neck hairs within seconds of the needle dropping. Immense.

  4. Blind Prophet & Bukkha - "Stone Dub" (VIP) (4:39)
Review: For the third volume in their Joint Forces series of collaborative EPs, Moonshine Recordings has pitted various producers against each other. DTR dominates the A-side, first joining forces with Akcept on the ultra-deep dancefloor dubstep of "Liberation Cry" (think echoing horn lines, rich sub-bass and trippy effects) before inviting Bukkha into the studio for the exotic dub cheeriness of "Hard To Explain". Bukkha returns on the B-side alongside Blind Prophet. They begin with the dark sub-bass pressure, ricocheting guitars and echo chamber riddims of "Stone Dub", before successfully beefing up the beats for the rock solid 4/4 thump of "Stone Dub (VIP)".

  2. Deadroom - "Crashed Weed" (4:51)
  3. Baodub - "Call Da Police" (4:55)
  4. Baodub - "Find The Dub" (5:28)
Review: The second salvo in Moonshine Recordings' Joint Forces series brings together tracks from Deadroom and Baodub. The former handles the A-side, first unveiling the deep and rumbling bass, steppin' dub riddims and jaunty melody motifs of "Footprint Dub" before reaching for the restless wobble bass and delay-laden drum hits of "Crashed Weed". Baodub takes over on the flipside and can be found merrily skanking away to the mutant reggae stabs, fizzing electronics, twisted sirens and skittish beats of "Call Da Police". To round things off nicely, the same artist slaps down the rolling dunk funk of "Find The Dub", where glistening guitar lines, melodica and delay-laden stabs shuffle around the smoky sound space.

  3. Fall Of Mevia (4:25)
  4. Nightmares (3:32)
Review: Last spotted on Sleeper's Crucial a year ago, Los Angelo Oxossi returns with four more frenzied fusions. "Escher" gobbles down on classical rudiments and spits them back out in a fiery, unpredictable meld that genuinely sounds like no other, "&" pays homage to the jazz foundations while "Fall Of Mevia" takes us into deeper psychedelic pastures as a gothic arpeggio wafts and curls around an industrial strength halfstep. Finally "Nightmares" takes us out in the more experimental oceans with a twisted time signature and seasick, woozy bass experience. Like everything on Crucial, this is seriously one of a kind.

  1. Realise (feat Rider Shafique) (5:11)
  2. Bayside Shakedown (4:15)
Review: Fresh from his Encrypted excursion earlier this year, Karnage returns with two more powerful packages of pure future. "Realise" features the smoky, purring tones of Rider Shafique who calls for unity over paranoid dynamics and shattered rim shots. Most commonly spotted around the 160 mark with the likes of Sam Binga, Rider's control at 140 is just as strong, as anyone who's familiar with Ishan Sound will already know. "Bayside Shakedown" taps into Karnage's eastern roots with its processed rising percussion before dropping into organs straight out of a zombie b-movie. Incredible scenes.

Review: Caski & Near's Raincloud launches in the best way possible... On vinyl with an exciting new innovative talent and a sound that's like no other. "Operator" is the dancefloor-focused jam with its smouldering drums and pressurised subs and textures. "The Poet" is pure modern jazz with its elastic fractured drums, wheezing horns and a heavy, crucial narrative. A precision launch release; Raincloud are starting as they mean to progress.

  4. Nakes - "Moksha" (4:02)
Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Review: This 12" not only marks the debut of Crystal Recordings, but also hyped duo Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem, AKA experienced grime producers JFO and Sativa. The Manchester-based pairing hits the ground running with title track "Gully Side", an impressively intoxicating fusion of deep dubstep rhythms, grime attitude, spooky synthesized strings and speaker-rattling sub-bass posturing. They impressively mix things up on superior flipside "Distant Riddim", where an exotic, snaking melody line wraps itself around a stabbing sub-bass pattern and razor-sharp grime beats. Throw in occasional MC vocal samples, and you have a weighty concoction that's as musically inspiring as it is floor-friendly.

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

Review: Quest isn't mucking around with his new label Innerverse. Opening up the shop with hugely respected US dub/grime ambassador Jonah Freed, the statement of intent is firmly locked. The fire's lit with dark classical jam with Samba; "Dream Sequence" is based on a cascading, decaying loop that suddenly drops into the strings of your deepest sleep before snapping you back into mechanical funk wakefulness in a jolt. "Time Dilation" sees Jonah going deeper into the orchestral echo chamber as the slimy beats clank and shatters over the drama. Finally "Engulfed In Flames" sends us to zones we didn't know existed with a twilight loop twinkling from background to foreground over more of Freed's smoking beats. Solid gold.

Review: Four releases deep and Truth's Deep Dark & Dangerous imprint continues to impress. Now joined by Leeds subsmith Taiko, it's another case of three genuinely innovative pieces of bass music. "Hush Hush" counters the rough grizzly bass with the smooth chords and textures, "Clones" is oceanic in it dynamic and jazzy in its sensibility and unpredictability while "Fu##y" is the industrial strength sludge-packer we've come to expect from Taiko.

Review: Slovenian soundboys Dubdiggerz make their debut on the ever-tasty Gourmet Beats imprint with three stunning and far-reaching slices of authentic, forward-thinking bass music. "Le Hospital" is exactly where many people will be heading when you drop this at the right time. True toxic bass funk that happily scuffs its knuckles along in the muck. "Up & Dub VIP" takes an old original dub download, ups the tempo a little and adds various layers and textures. "Busted" closes the show on a springy alien funk tip with caverns of dubspace between the mischief. Can you dig it?

  2. Tetrad - "Crumble" (6:09)
Review: LA not-so-confidential: Tetrad has been developing a strong reputation for slick sub aesthetics for a little while now, appearing on labels such as Sublimate and Sure State. Now bringing his emerging friend and sonic kindred spirit Ahkur along for the ride, the result is the smoke-stacked, toxic bass croaker that's "Ashes Fall", a powerful piece of darkness designed for 3am and later. "Crumble" sees Tetrad back on the solo flex with a sweet sub that sits behind everything anonymously until it starts to flop out behind the kicks in a dizzying, almost physical way. Authentic.

Full spectrum services on offer: OH91 sets the tone with a smouldering sub sesh on "Meditation", Nights & Aerotonin fire up the grime hole with the aggy, cutty "Jazz Licks" and TryTryDieDown lets loose on a sharply edited juke-style jam "Boo". Denver's Crix Saiz finishes with a deep throaty one-fingered salute. Genuinely unique.

Review: Hard Wax's resident dub and bass music expert is back on Version with the For The Head EP. Appearing on the A side, this track is a deep, roaring and experimental take on the dubstep sound that you've come to expect by now from this master producer, plus it packs a serious low end punch beneath all its delay drenched aesthetic. On the flip, we've got "The Past Is A Dream" a much darker and heaving affair with rolling bass and hissing rhythms that fight for space between a furious wall of reverberated white noise.

Review: Grab a blanket or a big coat; this one's cold... Following his well-received "Future" EP on Foundation (and releases on the likes of Encrypted and Indigo Movement), Zygos delivers two more pulsating, floor-focussed constructions. "Shivering" will rippled your skin to its bones with the cascading paranoid textures trickling down a wholly wet groove. "Gwari" steps even deeper into the dance with a rolling drum arrangement, palpitating basses, tight percussion and eerie pipes that fuses with serious hypnosis. Both Zygos and Rarefied are making serious statements here.

Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.

Review: Since launching back in 2015, The Most High series has delivered a swathe of killer dancefloor vibrations, all of which are of mysterious origin. Their latest un-credited, single-sided salvo is another high-grade workout for those who like their productions delay-laden and irie. "Jah Not Dead" is nominally a deep dubstep cut, though its stepping riddim, horn-heavy samples and Rastafarian vocalizations are closer to traditional dub than DMZ or Techtonic plates. Either way, it's the kind of well produced, bootleg cut that will sound suitably righteous when booming out of a proper reggae sound system.

Here are four cases in point: the tripped out vocal sample dynamic on the VIP of "Echidna", the spacey funk and slurring soul of "LIA", the groaning, unsettling harmonic machine tones and sudden human vocal splash of "Program" and the rolling tech-laced stepper "Peregrine", Inyoka has set out his stall with clarity. We can't wait to hear what he brings next.

Review: Have a word... Youngsta's launched a brand new vinyl-only label and DBridge launches it. Need we say more? Both "Fashion Dread" and "Digital Dread" are Darren White at his darkest and most stately - elephantine production, moody and misty and ultimately soaked in beautifully warm bass, both cuts have been doing the rounds on dubs for almost two years and have been in demand since Youngsta debuted them. Simply massive. Get on these quickly.

Review: Keeping it loose as we wade into a new year, Encrypted Audio ask Japan's Karnage back for more faraway jams. As with previous outings together, it's an enveloping sea of shades ranging from the woozily bent and cascading tones of "Leaper" that almost slime off the beats to the bleary flute loop that's mangled with precision levels of uplift on "Mysticism". In between we have the industrial strength "SOL" which sounds like a steel foundry melted into a waveform. Powerful.

Review: This Turkish dubstep producer is on fire at the moment with appearances on Deep Medi and that awesome collaboration with Commodo and Kahn that got loads of people talking earlier in the year. He now serves up The tough bounce and wobble of "Tut Tut Situation" which is the street level sound of Istanbul representing good and proper; new bass frontiers explored on this one for sure. On the flip, we've got the gnarly underground anthem "Love & Acid" slithering then bashing away beneath layers of distortion and saturation on this savage, lo-fi groove.

Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

  1. System Test (original mix) (5:58)
  2. 3-D (3:54)
Review: In the nine years since he first appeared on the scene, Kromestar has released a ridiculous amount of music, most of which is pretty darn good. He's scaled things back a bit this year, mind; amazingly, System Test is only his third 12" of the year. Sitting somewhere between classic dubstep, trap, 8-bit and grime, the title track features fuzzy, tumbling electronic lines, fizzing bleeps, deep space sci-fi synths, and, of course, the kind of sub that should make any bass-head go weak at the knees. Flipside "3-D" redresses the balance by emphasizing the sparkling electronic motifs and retro game melodies, though it's still a suitably sizeable floor-filler.
