  1. Kingdom Dub (5:36)
  2. Space Cadet (4:56)
  3. Drainpipe (5:34)
Review: Foundation sounds from the man like Dubz and limited to 300. This is serious: "Kingdom Dub" is a tree-swinging powerhouse with a chest-beating bassline and superb swing in the weighted drums. "Space Cadet" strips down the session to the naked rudiments as a heavily reverbed drum slaps and warped FX tickle. "Drainpipe" seals the deal on a trippy note where the rhythmic elements have been slow cooked to a squishy malleable texture. You know what to do...

  4. Digid & Dubbing Sun - "Dread Come Again" (Egoless remix) (4:13)
Review: Albion Collective don't release very often. But when they do... Magic happens. Following 12"s from Taiko and Vaun & Jafu comes this superb double-up from Digid and friends. The Belgian kicks things off with an all-out chubby skank "Rainbow Dub". Big and riffy and just the right amount of groove, it's an Outlook anthem in waiting. "Come Dung" follows suit with a lower-toned bassline and beats that shuffle so loosely they drag their knuckles. Joining him on the B is Austrian Dubbing Sun for the heavily sprung "Dread Come Again" while Egoless brings matters to a halt with an exceptional plucked bass stepper. Beautiful.

Terror (12")
Cat: ARTKL 027. Rel: 07 Aug 17
  1. Terror (4:44)
  2. Industrial (6:14)
Review: Kosheen member Mark Morrison re-emerged last year with a new dubstep-focused alias, Markee Ledge. Having seen a new generation of DJs lap up his debut release on Tempa (and a couple of similarly impressive follow-up EPs), he's naturally keen to ram home his advantage. Hence this fine two track collaboration with Tempa stalwart Youngsta. The experienced duo hits the mark with "Terror", where unflinchingly heavy sub-bass and weighty analogue thrusts punch through atmospheric textures, paranoid vocal samples and a stripped-back but punchy rhythm track. The duo's love of dub is explored in greater detail on the more traditional dubstep shuffle of "Industrial", whose title was seemingly inspired by their choice of metallic background effects.

Review: OG slimer Silkie takes us out on the town and drinks us under the table. "Drunken Master" chugs a lug with its oddball bass ruffles and creepy arpeggio layers building and building, "Why Not" is the quintessential brandy chaser, easing you in smoothly with his signature funk before warming your chest with darker bass tones. Brought together with Silkie's trademark talkbox finesse, the only woozy after effects will be a love hangover. Blessy.

Review: Truth's triple-D rollcall develops again with the unique sounds of Sepia. Since emerging on Gourmet, he's pushed all the right deep buttons on White Peach and Infernal. Here we find him on some of his darkest and most captivating touches so far as he builds on the Deep Dark & Dangerous signature; on the weightier side "Sakura" has a richter-rocking grumble of a bassline and "Point Blank" pings and ricochets with a cosmic two-step while on the more introspective side "Eclipse" flutters and twinkles over a sludgy subby bass and "Regret" yearns and mourns with subtle chords and lashings of dubspace and lingering percussion. Quintessential DDD.

Review: MC of the moment Rider Shafique takes a trip down Egyptian Avenue, barging down the doors of the one and only Epoch. The result is a Blacklisted banger of toxic proportions. With a freeform low end creeping under the radar, there's stacks of space for Rider to really get into his flow before momentum picks up in the third minute. Flip for a stuttering, tripped out ghetto twist on "Dust" from Artillery and lock down every aerial in a 20 mile radius.

Review: Karnage & Rider Shafique's IFS006 was always going to be hard to match but Infernal Sounds have maintained the bar with this is leftfield couplet of technoid, industrial-strength steppers from San Fran's Saule. "Cure Dem" bites hard with its spiralling paranoid riff that digs deeper and deeper under your skin while "Suede" gets a little ghostly with tripped out reverse textures, alien FX and enough dubspace to park a fleet of buses. Remix-wise Mesck adds to the panic as he adds a grizzlier, sleazier feel to the low end of "Suede". Immense.

Review: The tenth release on Encrypted Audio see's DMVU arrive on the vinyl side of life. With this release seeing plays from all corners of the electronic music scene, it's proving to be a must. Deep dubstep of the highest calibre here. Just listen to A side cut "Pourin' Up With Dolphin Tears". This dope and paranoid cut will work well for the late night: you can almost hear the lighter going off in the background. "Rollin Thru Thicc" rolls deep through walls of warm low end frequency and blunted beats. On the flip, the wonky and grimey "Sippin Skooma" closes out this fine EP in style. Featuring plays from Noisia, Truth, N Type and Antiserum to name but a few.

Review: Youngsta's Sentry returns with its sophomore session and it's just as hard-hitting, authentic and true to the craft as dBridge's launch release. No one does the no-rules bass game like Nomine and here we find him returning to a deep temp(a)plate that he helped to sculpt. "Stomp" is concentrated doom with deep pressured coded into the wandering sub, industrial swagger and slo-mo mentasms. "Slip" continues the weight and steel foundry clanging drums but with vapour trails of Oriental melody sliding and swooning above. Stunning material from one of the hardest working and talented men in the bass game.

Review: Virginia b2b LA b2b vibes for miles; everything about this Innerverse 12" hits hard. Two men staring down the barrels of very exciting futures, Oxossi and Malleus build on their collective body of work on the likes of FKOF, Crucial, Gourmet and Silent Motion with four of their most powerful compositions. Together they give us the dazzling, arpeggiated blue moon spotter "Amongst The Hemlock" and the fractured funeral march "The Infinite Depth Of Woe" while individually Oxossi lays down bouncy Loefah-style haunted cathedral stepper in the form of "Don't Bitch" while Malleus takes us back to 2008 with a homage to the eyebrow shavers.

Review: Erstwhile joker and Jo'burg journeyman, Escapism Refuge returns to Deep Heads off-shoot Smokin Sessions with three crystal cuts: "On The Fence" digs deep into classical dub mentality with its wandering sub and ebbing/flowing pads while "Almost Eight" plays counterpoint with a much darker dominant bassline and beats that lollop so much it could be a Dead Prez instrumental. "Dust" settles this smouldering sonic affair once and for all with cascading chords and a more garage-inclined drum pattern. Bliss.

Review: Jerome Meyer AKA Von D has been on fire in 2017. This two-tracker for Amar follows hot on the heels of acclaimed 12" singles on Khaliphonic, Reflektion Tapes, Moonshine Recordings and Lion Charge. A-side "Burn Baphomet" sees the producer continue his mission to fuse the low slung, heavyweight sub pressure and angular electronics of dubstep with the relentless feedback trails, bouncy delay and ricocheting Melodica lines of classic Jamaican dub. He ups the tempo a little on similarly minded but altogether bolder B-side "Les 12 Colonnes", which arguably sails even closer to pure dub territory than its predecessor.

Review: Last spotted fooling around on Crucial with Sleeper on "Fukka", LA's Mesck continues his thundering vein of form with a return to Chestplate. Two tracks and two tonnes heavy; "The Veil" mangles theatre with heavy industry and outer planetary communication while "Slang Suffocate" takes us back to a fuzzier bass texture with its pranged out creepy carnie melody that raises roofs and neck hairs within seconds of the needle dropping. Immense.

Review: Last spotted on Sleeper's Crucial a year ago, Los Angelo Oxossi returns with four more frenzied fusions. "Escher" gobbles down on classical rudiments and spits them back out in a fiery, unpredictable meld that genuinely sounds like no other, "&" pays homage to the jazz foundations while "Fall Of Mevia" takes us into deeper psychedelic pastures as a gothic arpeggio wafts and curls around an industrial strength halfstep. Finally "Nightmares" takes us out in the more experimental oceans with a twisted time signature and seasick, woozy bass experience. Like everything on Crucial, this is seriously one of a kind.

Review: Fresh from his Encrypted excursion earlier this year, Karnage returns with two more powerful packages of pure future. "Realise" features the smoky, purring tones of Rider Shafique who calls for unity over paranoid dynamics and shattered rim shots. Most commonly spotted around the 160 mark with the likes of Sam Binga, Rider's control at 140 is just as strong, as anyone who's familiar with Ishan Sound will already know. "Bayside Shakedown" taps into Karnage's eastern roots with its processed rising percussion before dropping into organs straight out of a zombie b-movie. Incredible scenes.

"Operator" is the dancefloor-focused jam with its smouldering drums and pressurised subs and textures. "The Poet" is pure modern jazz with its elastic fractured drums, wheezing horns and a heavy, crucial narrative. A precision launch release; Raincloud are starting as they mean to progress.

Review: This 12" not only marks the debut of Crystal Recordings, but also hyped duo Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem, AKA experienced grime producers JFO and Sativa. The Manchester-based pairing hits the ground running with title track "Gully Side", an impressively intoxicating fusion of deep dubstep rhythms, grime attitude, spooky synthesized strings and speaker-rattling sub-bass posturing. They impressively mix things up on superior flipside "Distant Riddim", where an exotic, snaking melody line wraps itself around a stabbing sub-bass pattern and razor-sharp grime beats. Throw in occasional MC vocal samples, and you have a weighty concoction that's as musically inspiring as it is floor-friendly.

Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

Review: Quest isn't mucking around with his new label Innerverse. Opening up the shop with hugely respected US dub/grime ambassador Jonah Freed, the statement of intent is firmly locked. The fire's lit with dark classical jam with Samba; "Dream Sequence" is based on a cascading, decaying loop that suddenly drops into the strings of your deepest sleep before snapping you back into mechanical funk wakefulness in a jolt. "Time Dilation" sees Jonah going deeper into the orchestral echo chamber as the slimy beats clank and shatters over the drama. Finally "Engulfed In Flames" sends us to zones we didn't know existed with a twilight loop twinkling from background to foreground over more of Freed's smoking beats. Solid gold.

"Le Hospital" is exactly where many people will be heading when you drop this at the right time. True toxic bass funk that happily scuffs its knuckles along in the muck. "Up & Dub VIP" takes an old original dub download, ups the tempo a little and adds various layers and textures. "Busted" closes the show on a springy alien funk tip with caverns of dubspace between the mischief. Can you dig it?

Review: LA not-so-confidential: Tetrad has been developing a strong reputation for slick sub aesthetics for a little while now, appearing on labels such as Sublimate and Sure State. Now bringing his emerging friend and sonic kindred spirit Ahkur along for the ride, the result is the smoke-stacked, toxic bass croaker that's "Ashes Fall", a powerful piece of darkness designed for 3am and later. "Crumble" sees Tetrad back on the solo flex with a sweet sub that sits behind everything anonymously until it starts to flop out behind the kicks in a dizzying, almost physical way. Authentic.

Appearing on the A side, this track is a deep, roaring and experimental take on the dubstep sound that you've come to expect by now from this master producer, plus it packs a serious low end punch beneath all its delay drenched aesthetic. On the flip, we've got "The Past Is A Dream" a much darker and heaving affair with rolling bass and hissing rhythms that fight for space between a furious wall of reverberated white noise.

Following his well-received "Future" EP on Foundation (and releases on the likes of Encrypted and Indigo Movement), Zygos delivers two more pulsating, floor-focussed constructions. "Shivering" will rippled your skin to its bones with the cascading paranoid textures trickling down a wholly wet groove. "Gwari" steps even deeper into the dance with a rolling drum arrangement, palpitating basses, tight percussion and eerie pipes that fuses with serious hypnosis. Both Zygos and Rarefied are making serious statements here.

Review: Lighta! Sound and its crew of artists are largely credited with bringing dubstep and UK bass music into Vancouver's consciousness. Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

Jah No Dead (1-sided 10")
Cat: THEMOSTHIGH 009. Rel: 20 Feb 17
  1. Jah No Dead (3:13)
Review: Since launching back in 2015, The Most High series has delivered a swathe of killer dancefloor vibrations, all of which are of mysterious origin. Their latest un-credited, single-sided salvo is another high-grade workout for those who like their productions delay-laden and irie. "Jah Not Dead" is nominally a deep dubstep cut, though its stepping riddim, horn-heavy samples and Rastafarian vocalizations are closer to traditional dub than DMZ or Techtonic plates. Either way, it's the kind of well produced, bootleg cut that will sound suitably righteous when booming out of a proper reggae sound system.
