  1. Rain
  2. Rain (Jack Sparrow remix)
Played by: AxH
Review: Pitter-patter party piece from early 2013, XXXY's bubblesome future garage cut gets a repress from Pollen... "Rain" is all about the subverted two-step and washed out synth splashes that trickle down the vibe pensively. Meanwhile on the B, Jack Sparrow flips the vibe with upbeat shuffle-drums and a palpitating bassline that drives the vibe with subtle but effective drama. A worthwhile revisit; grab it if you missed it first time around.

  1. Ego Dub (1:15)
  2. Refuse (5:04)
Review: The mysterious WULF comes through with his debut for Tribe 12 Music, an imprint reserved for the more headsy end of bass music around the European quarters. "Ego Dub" and a straight-up roller, a corner-dweller special featuring a heavy bassline, dubwise flutters and a loose percussion flex. On the B-side, "Refuse" man rains the dub tonality, but heads deeper into the wormhole thanks to a sleepy artillery of drums, and a grizzly bassline for that final 'crunch'. Recommended!

Review: Currently spotted across the country with the Hit & Run crew, tremors from Wayfarer's seismic bass can be felt right across the bass scene. Take one listen to these distinctive blends and you'll understand why. "Afterlight" is a sludgy, slo-mo weave of chubby percussion and deep throat bass gurgles, "Azuma" is a much more stark rhythm homage with epic space between each sparse, icy element while "Zeg" completes the show with awesome staccato tribal drum drama and a tight, insistent rhythm riff. Addictive, heavy and unique.. Just the way Uprise like it.

  4. War Of The Minds (feat Werd2Jah) (4:28)
Review: New Zealand duo Truth have been irregular contributors to the Deep Medi cause since their debut on Mala's label back in 2009. In this time, Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake have spread the Truth gospel for dubstep heads with further releases on Firepower, Tempa, Boka and more. War Of The Minds sees Truth back on Deep Medi for the duo's first 12" of 2016 replete with some eye-catching cover art from m7grafiks. From the opening sub heave and lolloping rollage of "Jade Helm" you can tell Fernandez and Roake made these cuts with Deep Medi in mind, honing in successfully on a very specific mood. The brute force bass of "With Us" and the Werd2Jag guesting title cut are the pick here.

Review: The mysterious Tremble has already appeared on Ruffcut before, his previous 10" being a gnarly blend of dubstep and pure bass delight, and he's up to the same tricks on this latest two-tracker. "Radix" sounds like the kind of dub version that Jah Shaka would play these days, except the beat is broken, shuffling, and the tones in its core are closer to the DMZ end of things, or even Livity Sound's output. "Chalice" follows the same sort of formula, but what is different here is the texture and sci-fi sounds surround the whirlpool of bass holding the track together. Rahh...

Review: Ruff Cuts! Strictly 10" styles! For the uninitiated, Ruff Cut was launched by Osiris Music back in 2013 as an intermittent platform for their roster to explore styles and sounds away from the main flex associated with Kryptic Mind's label. Tremble has become a key Ruff Cut artist, despite the lack of information out there, with this Far Wud 10" the third release on the label credited to the producer. Once again, Tremble delivers two cuts of dubwise stepper science with the spacious vibe of the title track just shading it for us. Dare we say it is Tremble's best work to date? Sure, let's run with that!

Review: Rumours and hushed gossip have shrouded "Nautilus" in mystique for almost four years now. All sludgy, slo-mo and baked in dense pads and processed dog barks, it still sounds as crazy as it did when Strago first unveiled it all those years ago. Likewise for RDG's loopy, percussion-primed tech rub. The wait is over... But hurry as Niteshade are only pressing 300 copies of this and promise never to repress. You know what to do.

Review: Taken from his debut album Whole Other, Richard delivers a two-sided session that covers every aspect of the party... His original is a tightly woven web of breezy pads, delicate drums and velvet vocals while Mala's side takes us deep into the dance with treacle subs, heaving harmonies, lolloping beats and a dramatic, off-beat fill that's straight out of an art house film before morphing into a main bass hook. Every side wins.

  3. FaltyDL - "Sunday"
  4. Benga - "I Come From London"
  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Review: Amid his current announcements that he will be playing house, techno and disco at all performances from now on, Ollie Jones unleashes the seventh instalment of previously unreleased material. Ranging from the sultry pop soul of the Kelis-fronted "Copy Cat" to the classic Croydon savagery of "Vacillate" and "Scrooge's Revenge", it's one of the broadest "Skreamizm" collections to date. For an idea of his new sonic ventures head for "Sticky": it's like Alter Ego but with grittier, more Londoncentric charms.

  1. Music Killer (extended mix)
  2. Music Killer (Dubplate Pressure)
Review: Music Killer is an appropriately titled second release from the almighty pairing of Pinch and Adrian Sherwood who are clearly enjoying bringing their respective and respected production talents to the table in a studio situation. Whilst the Bring Me Weed 12" released earlier this year was very good it felt a bit like Sherwood and Ellis were only just feeling out where the partnership could go, the two tracks here sound like the results of some extensive studio time for the pair. Having road tested the record on the Juno office stereo it has be said headphones or laptop speakers just don't do justice to the deeply trippy bass weight of "Music Killer" in either it's extended or dubplate pressure version. The former crunches through a 130+bpm riddim and is blessed with all manner of toasting whilst Sherwood is granted the space on the latter to lay down some typically mind-bending reverb and delay effects.

  1. Be At His Command
  2. Vor Und Zuruck
Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.

Review: Gourmet return with another tasty treat: Sepia's on the chef flex with a glistening two course meal... "Harp Song" lilts softly with string-plucking grace before spasmodic kicks fire up from the rear and completely takeover the track with physical prowess. "Music Box" contains some equally delicate sounds. But in this instance the drums are present from the off, giving it an instant punch for the floors. Sitting somewhere between grime, bass and dubstep, there's a really refreshing air to both sides.

Review: Danny Scrilla tells two sides to one beautiful sonic story for the debut release on brand new underground bass imprint Library. The acid-heavy "Tell Dem" is the slow, steady and ultimately menacing march of the self-aware robots who will inevitably take over the planet. The beatless, synth-charmed "Cryosphere" soundtracks the aftermath as we're all preserved in freezers for future organ harvesting. A very serious label launch right here; get to know.

Review: Previous outings on the 10" white label series Ruff Cut have come from Killawatt, Kaiju and Send (Ipman and Killawatt) but there is no clue as yet who is behind this latest transmission. Regardless, if you have been following the label's intermittent releases you will feel the need to check these two cuts. Jah vibes abound in "Eazy Tek it Eazy", a dub-wise steppahs track that has Mariana Trench levels of deepness - we need to hear this one on a big rig! Oodles of delay greet your ears when "Word Sound And Power" swings into view, but there is more of a discernible beat to hang onto here.

  2. Earthwalker (Sekkleman remix) (5:12)
Review: Moonshine clearly can't let go of Subconscious, the 2013 album from Polish dubster Radikal Guru. Earlier this year, the label issued the Digitalizer Riddim 12", pairing up Subconcious highlight "Stay Calm" with a triplet of superb version excursions. Now that same YT-featuring cut appears on this rather dashing green 12", given the royal remix treatment by Glasgow's finest, Mungo's Hi-Fi. In the hands of this quartet, "Stay Calm" is transformed into a more conscious dubwise stepper and is complemented by the flipside take on "Earthwalker" by Sekkleman. Here the track is treated with all manner of delay, and boosted by some real sub heft.

Review: Bristol label Deeper Vibrations expand operations here with the launch of Mantra, a sister label dedicated to digging even deeper into the DNA of dubstep for releases that are geared equally for club play or headphone rotation. With a discography that's become characterised by a rare talent for matching rhythmic toughness with real musicality, Guy Chambers work under the Quantum Soul banner makes him a perfect candidate to inaugurate proceedings on Mantra. The lead track is a hook up with Dutch musician Katya Gabeli that results in a sumptuous exercise in horizontal beat science and it's more than matched by the solo flipside cut "Nemawashi".

If you've followed their unfettered support for authentic dubstep, you'll already know how much of a big deal this is. Kicking off with New Zealand duo Perverse, both sides rumble with class; "IO" is laced with trippy percussive ricochets and a stately amphibious warble while "Aye Aye" is a sludgier, unhurried pensive construction full of dark drama. From the packaging to the sounds; you know Infernal have spent a long time planning this label debut... And they're likely to have spent even longer planning the oncoming release-assault.

First spotted on Loefah's Rinse show well over a year ago, the deep spacious dyanmics and pensive flow of "Production House" owe more to authentic dub than any modern genre. So crisp, restrained and detailed with intricate flourishes and dynamics, it was tailor made for vinyl. "Fabrik" is more of a modern dance twist up with a stately tech 4/4 and some superbly manipulated bass textures. Minimalism is such a dark art to master... Orson definitely has the secret.

Review: The first single to be taken from Maya Jane Coles' new dub-minded Nocturnal Sunshine project, both "Take Me There" and "Never Too Late" explore the fertile pastures amid the tech/dub axis with garage-minded glee. The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. If you like these, you'll love the album.

Review: Tri Angle's Rabit launches a brand new label Halcyon Veil with fellow futurist Myth taking the debut release duties. Weighing in at seven tracks, it's tantamount to an album-length release. Not just size-wise, but with a sonic consistency, too... From the churchy tones and dreamy two-steps of "Phoenix" to the subverted Get Physical-style riff and garage rhythm of "Skyz" by way of the solemn opener "Lonely", Myth's production vision sits neatly between total headphone immersion and foggy dancefloor moodiness. We can't wait to see what comes next.
