Spacer Woman (12" + insert repress)
Cat: DE 077. Rel: 29 May 17
  1. Spacer Woman (7:20)
  2. Spacer Woman (instrumental) (7:30)
Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is one of the better-known Italo-disco anthems, which makes it all the more surprising that Dark Entries has chosen to reissue it. This is not a criticism, though; they've given Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani's original the remaster treatment, and it sounds even more alien, exciting and oddball as it did back in 1983. The original vocal version - all woozy synths, throbbing arpeggios, wonky beats and typically eccentric vocals - is backed by the Instrumental version, which is the preferred mix of choice for many Italo DJs. If it's not in your collection already, it should be.

Fish Music (Record Store Day 2017) (limited 1-sided clear vinyl 7" + insert)
Cat: FKSP 011. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Fish Music (3:09)
Review: Record Store Day may have been and gone, but limited, must-have special releases continue to trickle in. This single-sided, clear vinyl 7" from the impressive Finders Keepers label should be an essential purchase for anyone interested in the pioneering, mind-altering electronic music of Suzanne Ciani. Taken from her vast archive of unreleased material, "Fish Music" was initially composed in 1977 for "infinite loop airings in a giant mid-American shopping mall". Ambient and fluid in tone, the nine-minute piece was largely created using Ciani's cherished Buchla synthesizer. That it sounds futuristic and out-there 40 years after it was composed says a lot about Ciani's far-sighted approach to music making.

Review: Junto Club kicked off Snap Crackle & Pop late last year, and now the label returns with the debut solo release from London-based outfit DEEDS. While Rollo and Kiri Inglis may have previously popped up on an obscure compilation on Anti-Ghost Moon Ray, this record should see their coldwave sound shoring up with many more adventurous listeners. "Video Dreams" is a beautifully melancholic slice of electronica while "Unknown" reaches for euphoric heights. Remixes from Bezier and The Field round the record out as a wonderful exercise in emotive home listening electronics for sensitive souls.

  6. Rendezvous With An Invader (4:31)
Review: Sebastian Hubert's Hyboid project continues to deliver high-tech waves of contemporary electro, and there's no stopping him or his insatiable Astro Chicken imprint. "UFOs Over Berlin", a sight all too often seen by the city's residents, starts off with a harsh artillery of beats and a fast, 80s sort of tempo that verges into coldwave; "Torture By Popcorn" sounds like an early 2000's Euro house anthem stripped down to its bare bones, and "Rocket Science" goes for a more sombre, synth-heavy approach for the more introspective listeners out there. The B-side starts with the sinister yet seductive synth harmonics of the glitchy "Ambush At Treptower Park", "A Fistful Of Tribbles" sounds like a boogie reinterpretation of some cold, 90s electro madness, and "Randezvous With An Invader" takes inspiration from the Kraftwerk school of thought, transporting the listener with a quirky selection of synth waves.

  3. Firedance
  4. Stardriver
Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

Review: A pioneer since the early '90s and, not to mention, an originator of the "wonky" side of hard-hitting techno, Scotland's Neil Landstrumm is an artist to be treated with the upmost respect by the wider dance scene. Aside from an endless variety of releases for labels like Peacefrog back in their golden era, Landstrumm has never compromised on a single aspect of his music, and he's always stuck to offering his own version of techno - there ain't a hint of bandwagons here! This latest release sees him rock up on the fabulously off-kilter Giallo Disco imprint, active in the game since 2012 and masters of their own universe. While these five killers are perhaps slightly less deadly than their 90s counterparts, that inimitable Landstrumm sound is very much there, only subtly masqueraded by a more disco-leaning cosmetic makeover. If you're into raw, effective floor trax then you should look no further. All killer, no filler...

Review: Sebastopol's been MIA since 2012, the year in which the electronic nomad released the sublime Hello All Stations, This Is Zero. Given the artist's mysterious behaviours, it's difficult to tell whether he (or she!) has released under any other aliases or projects. However, what we can say is that this new EP, Assassin, has just reminded us of why we dug that debut so damn much. "Assassin" itself is a little masterpiece, a tune which rides at a techno pace but that feels so much deeper and explorative than that; its warm, bubbling glow of a bassline pushes on like a pulse. Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani reworks the original into a much more sombre, glacial kind of affair, which is absolutely effective and yet still overshadowed by the original. "Manethon" bleeps its minimal slew over a fluid drum machine beat, leaving Privacy enough space to transform it into a grungier, more broken EBM sort of belter.

Review: In typical Music From Memory fashion, their latest archival release shines a light on one of the UK's lesser-known bands of the early 1980s. The System released a lone single in 1981, followed by a now incredibly rare debut album, Logic, in 1983. Three of the cuts here are taken from that set, including the dreamy, downbeat Balearic-pop opener "Almost Grown" - a wonderfully evocative six minutes, all told - and the far-sighted, spacey, proto-techno shuffler "Vampirella". This EP also includes one previously unreleased track, "Find It In Your Eyes", which was rescued from long-forgotten master tapes during the licensing process.

Review: Some lovely vocoder pop courtesy of London duo Alexander Keefe & Joakim Kristiansen aka Teachers: actually real life teachers in fact. One of the guys released previously on WT as Tagwell Woods and the label claims that this "works at home or in the club." True that. This is convincing '80s synthpop from the machines right through to the methodology and recording techniques (it seems!) and even hints at taking influence from legends such as Erasure, Pet Shop Boys or Stephin Merritt's Magnetic Fields project. Comes with colour picture sleeve with photo realistic painting by Gabe Benzur.

Review: For the fourth transmission on his Gravitational Waves label, DJ Nephil has invited old pal and dark electronica stalwart Francesco Baudazzi to lend a hand. The Italian producer handles side A, first serving up the alien EBM shuffler "Gods in the Trash" under his Violet Poison aliases, before donning the Bakunin Commando guise on the fantastically weird, out-there industrial workout "Trump's Disintegrated Butthole Due to Gasoline Enema". Nephil takes charge on the flip, restoring a little sanity voa the hypnotic, EBM-influenced techno throb-job "Untitled". As if to hammer home the point, his fine closer, "Frid 17", is a shuffling, 4/4 electro-acid full of ghostly chord progressions and mind-melting noises.

Review: By the time they released In Visible Silence in 1986, the trio behind the Art of Noise - JJ Jeczalik, Gary Langan and Anne Dudley - had broken free of producer Trevor Horn and ZTT Records' concept-loving media man, Paul Morley. The resultant album was arguably more musically rich and varied than its predecessors, even if their obsession with the creative potential afforded by the Fairlight-CMI sampling computer remained in tact. It remains a hugely enjoyable set, rich in Dudley's neo-classical flourishes, Jeczalik's cheeky sense of humour and ability to spot a killer sample, and Langan's brilliant beat programming and production. This expanded reissue accompanies the original 11-track album with a wealth of obscure, forgotten or unreleased bonus material, including alternative mixes, 12" versions and unlikely collaborations.

Review: Having previously impressed with their reissue of Patrick Cowley's brilliant, all-synthesizer soundtrack to obscure '70s gay porn flick School Daze, Dark Entries and Honey Sound System once again join forces to shine a light on the high energy disco pioneer's work for San Francisco's Fox Studios. Unsurprisingly, it's another impressive collection, and features material recorded for a number of different pornographic films. There are naturally more up-tempo moments - see "Somebody To Love Tonight", which would later be re-recorded with Sylvester, and the synth-weirdness-meets-jazz-funk brilliance of "5oz of Funk" - but it's the impressively cosmic and exotic ambient moments, such as the stand-out "Timelink" and "Jungle Magic", that really stand out.

Review: Federico De Caroli's Deca project has been waving the flag for Italy's ambient and mystique concrete scene since the mid 1980's. The man's albums, which span a wild and diverse set of experimental sounds, are a rarity these days; this particular reissue, Deca's debut from 1986, is going for near L300 on Discogs, so count this your lucky day. Mass, as the name curiously implies, is a rip-roaring fest of a journey through the deepest and most cavernous of coldwave sounds. With its high-speed pace on the drums and a grainy, grey-scaled coating to round it off, it feels like rave music way before the term was coined. Proto-techno also doesn't it do any justice because tunes like "Inseminoid" or "The Door" go much further than that, heading way out into unknown territories which then became second nature to artists like AFX about a decade later. If you're into your dance music on the industrial side, and if you like it cooked raw, then this will please you endlessly. Be quick, though!
