Review: Announced with the most cryptic of statements and accompanied by a thousand online think pieces, the long awaited Ghettoville from Actress is finally here! Much like previous long players from the Werkdiscs boss, Ghettoville is not an album your brain will digest in one sitting, especially since it packs in sixteen tracks across the three slabs of vinyl. Described as "the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image," Ghettoville draws on all the familiar Actress signifiers with the ghostly remnants of hip hop, Detroit techno and Chicago house scattered across the album. On immediate listen there are a few standout tracks, the ragged Motor City soul of "Gaze" and the brilliant finale "Rule" but we'll let you discover the rest for yourselves.

Review: After a string of tasty EP's, Les Invalides land on Germany's Kernkrach label with their debut LP! It's a beauty of a release, taking their modern approach to the synthwave slant onto the next level! "La Premier Fois" kicks things off with proper drum machine stutter and ice-cold electro synth chords, while "Diable-Danse" brings forth the snares and unfurls into a fast-paced, electrolite monster. The rest is similarly class and is guaranteed not to disappoint, moving between slower and more contemplative sounds sown by the same needle. This is the &%$@!!

Review: Yes, the sonic explorer known as Sam Shackleton returns with some new material on his Woe To The Septic Heart label! Hardly the most prolific of artists in the aftermath of Skull Disco shutting down, the Berlin-based Shackleton has nonetheless maintained and developed his own very singular music vision across releases for Honest Jon's Perlon and Woe To The Septic Heart. This latter label has arguably seen some of the producer's most striking work, experimenting with bright psychedelic tones mirroring the vivid artwork from longstanding visual collaborator Zeke Clough that adorn the label's sleeves. Following up his last release - and most bulging statement yet - in the shape of the much coveted Music For The Quiet Hour/The Drawbar Organ box set was always going to be tough. Instead of matching it, Shackleton has opted for something smaller in scope, with Freezing Opening Thawing a three-track 12? that still retains the brighter explorations of his recent work whilst moving away from sample based material. Essential Sonics!

Review: David Kennedy aka Pearson Sound is not one for releasing music a-la LIES, preferring instead to hold off until he's got something really special. The Hessle Audio co-founder come through with a delicious and conniving little 7" on his self-titled label, in what seems like a prolongation of some of his earlier work. Without a beat in sight, Kennedy delivers the good anyway and creates two lovely grooved out thin air....or rather, out of gorgeous synth manipulations. This is one for the heads and come recommended...

Maritime Tatami
A Game Of Despair
Review: Having released over fifty records since their foundation back in 2009, Dark Entries use the widened exposure afforded by that excellent Patrick Cowley compilation released in the last quarter of 2013 as a springboard to launch a new dedicated 12" series. Retaining their archival approach, the first release focuses on the short-lived Italian act Victrola; formed as a four piece combo in Messina, Victrola slimmed down to the synthesizer and guitar-based duo Antonio "Eze" Cuscina and Carlo Smeriglio and moved to the fertile music scene growing in early 80s Florence. In 1983, the pair issued their one record-shaped contribution to the early 80s Italian synth scene in the shape of Maritime Tatami, a two-track 12? issued on the Electric Eye label. Recorded using the Roland TR303 and TR606 at a time when these models had only been made available, so this reissue of Maritime Tatami from Dark Entries offers a chance for people to assess a slice of analogue experimentation at its most nascent.

Galacticoast (Gifted & Blessed remix)
Alpha Delta (Hieroglyphic Being reinterpretation)
Review: Yes!! Crucial London label Citinite return from a two year period of silence, brandishing a killer Death Comet Crew platter replete with remixes from Hieroglyphic Being and Gifted & Blessed! For those unfamiliar, Death Comet Crew was a rap/electro crew that grew out of the mid '80s arts scene in New York City that featured Ike Yard duo Stuart Argabright and Michael Diekman, DJ High Priest, Shinichi Shimokawa of Black Rain fame and MC/graffiti artist Rammellzee. They only issued the one EP in their initial period, but have latterly regrouped (minus the sadly departed Rammellzee) and this Citinite release follows after a recent debut LP for Powell's Diagonal label. Much like that album, it's all brand new material here and it's great to see two of the USA's most visionary producers reworking them - the Hieroglyphic Being remix is a particular delight.

Muizenberg
Muizenberg (Seiji remix)
Muizenberg (The 2 Bears remix)
Review: After their all-conquering album has begun its march into end of year lists, Planet Mu follow up on the success of South African band John Wizards with this single, which lifts the sun-soaked indie rock lilt of "Muizenberg" and offers it up for remixing purposes. Seiji steps up first with a fractured version that taps into the purple dubstep sound as a touchstone for the day-glo synths and grinding bass swells to work from, making for a dazzling slice of modern electronica. The 2 Bears instead opt for a slickly produced house effort that piles the crafty studio trickery on heavy for a dynamic and effervescent revision befitting of the original's summer baiting tones.

Review: Continuing Bliq's quest to unearth the most spooky and otherworldly techno and deep house fodder out there, Thingamajicks step into the spotlight with a staggeringly confident first release that touches on a range of moods without even a hint of trepidation. "Priceless" is a slow, stark exercise in 4/4 melancholia focused on dramatic swells of chord rather than anything percussive. "Sub Rosa X" goes even further out into an immersive swarm of analogue electronics loping in a reluctant groove, the sounds swaying as though they are without an anchor, and then when you least expect it the title track takes a massive swerve towards lackadaisical guitar chords and breezy optimism.

Review: After briefly appearing as one of those enigmatic Sahko white labels, we weren't sure if Konstellaatio would be pressed up for a general release, but thankfully, our Finnish friends are wary of our electronic needs...This LP is Classic Mika under his O guise - one saved primarily for his most contemplative works - and it's one of those releases that will capture you from the start and make you want some therapy at the end of it. Rich, textural drones running the whole way through and accompanied by sparse, doomed melodies and fluttering beats. It's a spectacular ordeal of harmonic delight. Don't wait around because these won't last for very long...

Review: Man of many pseudonyms Joe Clausell seems to get more cosmic and spiritual with every passing year. Here, he dons a new moniker - Hidden Revealed - for another album length foray into a hazy musical hinterland where jazz, electronica, ambient, dub, tribal rhythms, clandestine atmospherics and grand concepts join in glorious union. While the concept - and there always is one with Clausell - may be hard to grasp, there's no denying the quality and rich musicality that pepper the American producer's evocative soundscapes. It's the sort of album that works on many levels, and it takes a few listens to fully appreciate its' multitude of layers and textures.

Alex North - "The Bad Seed"
Review: Oh yes. You know that feeling when a record you've been desperately hunting for years lands on your lap courtesy of an independent reissue label? Well, Finders Keepers have given us just that. Pierre Henry's devious soundtrack to Henry Decoin's 1962 horror flick "Malefices" was way ahead of its time then and still sounds otherworldly now, where intricate moulds of tape manipulation meet early modulations and electronic trickery - a certified winner for anyone into experimental electronics but also a must to any dedicated record collector. It's one of those special ones, people..!

Review: To mangle a cliche, former Pan Sonic man Mika Vainio has released more solo albums than you've had hot dinners. This is his ninth alone under the O moniker, and his 21st in total. Konstellaatio is perhaps not as out-there as some of his excursions, concentrating mostly on icy, atmospheric fusions of spacey, minimalist ambience, sparse, stargazing electronica, and tense, tactile soundscapes. As a result, it's unfussily beautiful, wringing maximum emotion from the most limited of elements. While it's all very good, at its' very best - such as on the 2001: A Space Odyssey style spookiness of "Metsan Sydan" - it's utterly astonishing.

Review: LTM Recordings offer up an expanded edition of B9: Belgian Cold Wave, the compilation of early Belgian cold wave and primitive electronics originally issued by the iconic Sandwich Records label back in 1981. This deluxe double vinyl pressing expands on that original edition with ten further tracks by Belgian acts that give a more conclusive overview of the country's contribution to the European cold wave moment that swept the continent in the late '70s and early '80s. So along with tracks by Digital Dance, Polyphonic Size, Pseudo Code and Prothese (Daniel 'Front 242' Bressanutti's first recording project) this new edition takes in the works of The Names, Marine, Front 242, The Neon Judgement, Siglo XX, Allez Allez, Berntholer, Nausea, Jung and Isolation Ward. Presented in a gatefold sleeve with new artwork from Victor Vasarely, B9: Belgian Cold Wave 1979-1983 also includes detailed sleeve noted and periodical images and will prove all too tempting for those seeking a particularly Belgian focus on Cold Wave.

Recall
Recall (Canyons Sands Of Time mix)
Review: Johann Rashid and Paul Harmon are the minds behind the new Promise Land project, a gritty mish-mash of late 80's digital dancehall, spoken word and indie thrashing. "Recall" is a zoned-out, head-space kinda tune - gritty, crispy percussion sliding smoothly behind a wail of messed up vocals and bleeping synths. Canyons Sands Of Time give the track a good old refix and twist it up into a real knot! Even stranger, more surprising melodies take control behind the faint glow of remaining vocals - and let's not forget those much needed bongos, of course! Recommended.

Anaztenapia (Pete Swanson version)
Anaztenapia (Vatican Shadow version)
Review: Excavated from the bottomless vaults of the Greek musical heritage, the new KEMA/\ label reissues a timeless piece of Hellenic ritualism: the folk dance of ANASTENARIA. Closely affiliated to the Berceuse Heroique imprint, KEMA/\ will focus its attention to the unearthing of ageless recordings, from pagan, cult-like hymns to forgotten electronic deviations...brutally backed with a fitting series of contemporary remixes. The sounds of ANASTENARIA are hypnotic and terrifying at their most docile moments, spinning you through ten segments of circular improvisation while transporting you to those sun-beaten hills and back again - the voices of the musicians and participators themselves creating enough energy to form a captivating pull towards this compelling segment of music. On the second slab of vinyl, Hospital Recordings boss, Vatican Shadow takes the essence of the entire cut and morphs it into a ten-minute cyclone of granular drones and thorny percussion, leaving the original's prophetic instruments to wail wildly beneath the mounds of hardware mutation - a strikingly apt fit to a recording made decades before... Over on the flip, it's up to Pete Swanson to definitively derange ANASTENARIA to its fullest, leaving behind a faint glow of the original's powerful air of mysticism. Fuzzy kick drums, grainy hi-hats and an ocean of organised noise culminate into total sonic destruction, spewing out the exhausted remnants of the dance to the Gods. Beautifully packaged by Will Bankhead, this first KEMA/\ is full of rebooted sounds that will appeal to the more daring spinners out there.

Half A God (Powell remix)
Cherish 8 (The KVB remix)
Cherish 8 (Vessel remix)
NCR (Bandshell remix)
Review: Whilst remix EPs are by no means the most original of concepts, French label Desire should be applauded for their set of Ike Yard Remix EPs due to the calibre of those involved. Previous editions have seen contributions from Regis, Monoton, Tropic of Cancer and former Ike Yard synth player Fred Szymanski and this third and final EP sees the label turn to a younger generation with equally compelling results. Diagonal boss Powell might be new to remixes (this is only his second after reconstructing Silent Servant for Jealous God) but he's evidently willing and capable to dissect the source and reassemble in his own style. Put simply, little of "Half A God" remains here but Powell's remix will resonate immediately with anyone that consumed his original work last year. Elsewhere The KVB essentially throw down a cover version of "Cherish 8" whilst Vessel's accompanying mix of the same track should sound deafening on a big system and much the same can be said about Bandshell's refix of "NCR".

Prototype (Mr Beatnick dub)
Review: Last seen on the Join Our Club label, rising UK producer Clarke Sawkill steps into the physical realm with Prototype, an excellent debut for the Bokhari Records imprint. Primed for optimum club play, Sawkill lays down the one original track which is complemented on the B Side by a remix from the excellent Mr Beatnick. "Prototype" is one long, lolloping slo mo DJ tool with the sort of rolling bassline that tends to wedge itself quite comfortably in your affections and demonstrates Sawkill might be a producer to keep your eye on. Mr Beatnick opts to implement a slightly faster tempo that suits his now familiar sense of melodic warmth down to a tee. Another great 12" from the Bokhari crew.

Review: As the man on the keys for Suicide, Martin Rev had his fair share of success in the post-punk explosion, but his less mined solo back catalogue has a wealth of early synth studies that range from the uptempo strut of "Mari" to the obtuse chords and drones of "Jomo". For an album released in 1980 there really are some forward-thinking textures at work, not least on the creepy Cabs-esque "Baby O Baby" with beyond the grave vocals to boot. For any collector of music from the golden age of synthesiser innovation, this is an utterly essential reissue.

Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. What a blinder!
