The Phantom - "Across The River, Beneath The Trees" (12:32)
The Phantom - "Europa" (11:33)
Sad City - "Limbo" (21:56)
Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Review: By our reckoning Morkret, Kylan, Tystnaden & Ensamheten is the eighth long player Jonas Ronnberg and Michel Isorinne have issued together as Dard A Ranj Fran Det Hebbershalska Samfundet in the past two years. Impressive work, more so given how productive Ronnberg is in his other musical endeavours these days. Recorded live in Hebbershalet, Sweden late 2014, this latest D.A.R.F.D.H.S. adventure sees the pair once again traversing the frosty ambient soundscapes across seven tracks that will delight and intrigue the more open minded of electronic music followers. From start to finish, Morkret, Kylan, Tystnaden & Ensamheten is an immersive affair with only the occasional concession to anything resembling a beat - "Ensam I Vasa" and "Tystnaden & Ensamheten" are both quite beautiful.

Irreconcilable Indifferences (6:50)
Hoodshedding (6:36)
Discomfort Zone (3:44)
Review: Given the quality of his eccentric, left-of-centre productions, it's rather surprising that this 12" is Madteo's first release since 2013. Predictably he's in fine form for this Latency debut, dropping a trio of tracks that largely eschew dancefloor thrills in favour of crackly textures, woozy chords, experimental electronics and minimal-goes-leftfield rhythms. A-side "Irreconcilable Differences" sets the tone, layering fuzzy guitar touches and hushed melodies over a quietly pulsing rhythm track. "Hoodshedding" is crackly, hypnotic and out-there, sounding not unlike early Nicholas Jaar with a Madteo twist. Arguably best of all, though, is EP closer "Discomfort Zone", which manages to be both dreamy and wholly unsettling in it's' pursuit of smacked-out IDM thrills.

Pray For Us (8:45)

Second Time Around (5:09)
Review: Rush Hour Distribution's No 'Label' operation is on one at the moment with recent arrivals from Jordan GCZ and Dublin pair Morgan Buckley & Olmo Devin fine additions to the label's discography. We can now add this sublime release from William Burnett's Black Deer project to our list of No 'Label' highlights. The four track Pray For Us sees the WT Records man venture further into the great sonic unknown and commences in truly spiritual fashion with the healing handclaps of the title cut. From here Burnett veers into shoegazy wave territory on "Leaving The Station" whilst "Frost To Mist" sounds like a cosmiche instrumental cover version of Timmy Thomas jam "Why Can't We Live Together". Final track "Second Time Around" veers off into sublime ambient territory. A quite wonderful record.

Suite From Magnetic Rose (18:54)
Review: It would in no way be a bold statement to say that Oneohtrix Point Never is both one of the most interesting minds in the contemporary experimental music game and one of our very favourite electronic artists. His catalogue speaks for itself and this latest RSD release for the mighty Warp Records is just a taste of the man's diversity as a musician and sound manipulator. "Bullet Hell Abstraction I" is basically a hardcore metal track that has been processed and taken off course to become an ultra-fast-paced jungle missile, while "Bullet Hell Abstraction III" is all crystal drones and noisy bursts of ambience. On the flip, "Suite From Magnetic Rose" winds things down into an anthemic bundle of choral vocals and sci-fi electronics...a truly startling head-trip into the ether.

Abstract Painting 104-105_7#02 (7:50)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from Stuart Leath's Emotional Response label; an in-depth exploration of the "outer reaches" of drone and ambient. It's a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of Serbian maverick Abul Mogard's opener - a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that's as freaky as it is beautiful. Stefan Schwander dons his now familiar Harmonious Thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer Steve Reich. Both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

XMAS_EVET1 N (5:08)
MARCHROMT38 Fast (5:36)
Review: Aphex Twin is either having a breakdown, or simply making up for lost time. Since dropping his first album in a decade, Syro, he's become strangely prolific, giving away vast amounts of music on Soundcloud and dropping EPs left, right and centre. This latest offering serves up the predictably hard to pronounce "Machromt30a Edit 2b 96", a blissfully melodious, Selected Ambient Works style slice of electronic beauty that was originally only available on the Japanese version of Syro. It's backed with two similarly impressive bonus cuts; the deliciously rolling, melodious "Xmas_Evet1N" (a brilliant alternate take of an album highlight) and "Machromt38 Fast", a skittish, Reflex-esque IDM reworking of the EP's title track.

Lushlyfe (5:55)
Lushlyfe Birds (6:54)
Review: It's a shame that Jordan 'Jordash' Czamanski rarely uses the Jordan GCZ alias, because when he does, the results are rarely less than spellbinding. Following last year's memorable outing on Future Times, he dons the pseudonym once more for a delightfully imaginative 12" on Rush Hour. The title track is particularly delicious, tiptoeing the fine line between picturesque beauty and late night creepiness via dreamy, drawn-out chords, bubbling electronics and eyes-closed synthesizer arpeggios. There's a little more sun-kissed beauty about the sparse slap bass, tumbling melodies and fluid electronics of "Lushlyfe Slap", while "Lushlyfe Birds" sees the Amsterdam-based producer drift off into vintage ambient territory. As predicted, all three tracks are wonderful.

Review: There's no doubt that determined man-of-mystery Panoram has a unique musical voice, as anyone who checked his thrillingly evocative, impossible-to-pigeonhole debut LP for Firecracker, Everyone Is A Door, would no doubt attest. It's unsurprising, then, to find that this follow-up is equally as evocative, with even more musical reference points - skewed downtempo jazz, Balearica, solo piano pieces, vibrant synthscapes etc. - joining his usual liquid ambience, synth-doodles and immersive electronic moods. The album is nominally a meditation on "the nature of memories and reality", but it many ways the concept is secondary. At the end of the day, the music is magical, and that's all that counts.

Review: Since first emerging from the sleepy backwaters of rural Sweden in 2013, ambient explorers D.A.R.F.D.H.S have been impressively prolific. This full-length for Field - a typically fragile, immersive set that joins the dots between droning creepiness, soft-focus beauty and icy electronica - is their seventh in total, following excursions on Opal Tapes, Clan Destine and Total Black. It's as intoxicating, enjoyable and heart wrenching as ever, with spine tingling melodies wrapping themselves around weightless synthesizer chords, dreamy rhythms and other-worldly textures. There are positive moments, of course, but for the most part it's beautifully poignant, as if the duo is mourning the loss of a dear friend.

Review: Germany's shadowy Hidden Hawaii label is back with two cuts by mystery person DB1! As per usual, the sound aesthetic is everything on here, and slippery jungle breaks are processed to the maximum and chucked in amidst airy pads, hard ambience and that classic organic sound which the label continuously strives for. This is the kinda stuff you should cop if you're either an old-school d&b fan who is sick of the cheap LTJ Bukem impersonators out there, or a lover of deep and spacey electronic jams which go in heavy on the percussion front. Quality assured, highly recommended.

Auratia (part one)
Auratia (part two)
Review: Even by the usually epic standards of Echospace - who are, after all, no strangers to long, drawn-out tracks - Auratia is particularly grandiose in concept and introduction. Inspired by one of the worst blizzards in Michigan's history, and containing sounds and textures that started out as field recordings, this latest missive from Stephen Hitchell's solo Variant project is made up of two tracks, each around an hour long. While hard to get a handle on from short clips, it's as beautiful, intoxicating and immersive as anything he's produced to date. Sat somewhere between drone, ambient and dub techno, Auratia is at times becalmed, intense, picturesque and, predictably, rather chilly.

Review: Kailash sees Soul Jazz do what Soul Jazz does best and pull together a wonderful posthumous celebration of Popul Vuh band leader leader Florian Fricke. Loosely billed as an informal career retrospective, Kailash features sketches that lead to some krautrock classics by Popul Vuh as well as a healthy amount of unreleased improvisations and recordings from Fricke that were uncovered after his passing in 2001. Largely based around Fricke's solo piano works, the double LP retrospective is augmented by a DVD edition of the German's 1995 documentary from which Soul Jazz named the compilation! Popul Vuh fans will be all over this!

Review: It's been four long years since the last full-length from American electronica producer Henry "Shlohmo" Laufer, a particularly epic wait given his early productivity (he famously launched his career with three albums in two years). Dark Red is, happily, an impressive set, with 11 doses of IDM inspired goodness stretched across two slabs of heavyweight wax. There's naturally much to admire, from the evocative, lo-fi fuzziness of "Emerge From Smoke" and picturesque D33J hook-up "Apathy" (a kind of ambient jazz exploration with hints of horror), to the skittish, jungle-influenced madness of "Fading". Best of all, though, is closer "Beams", a full-throttle exercise in the power of breakcore percussion.

Review: Given how damn prolific Tom Jenkinson is, it's hard to believe Damogen Furies is the first Squarepusher album in 3 years. Issued through regular hub Warp, Damogen Furies is the thirteenth Squarepusher album and in order to keep things fresh Jenkinson apparently decided to record all the tracks in one take without any subsequent edits. He's quoted as using words like brutal and visceral in the sales notes and those are definitely feelings that come up when listening to Damogen Furies. The opening two tracks "D Frozen Aac" and "Kwang Bass" which sound like Daft Punk pulled backwards through a vacuum and an arcade machine desiccated respectively, set the tone for the album as a whole. Very Squarepusher.

Having Never Written A Note For Percussion (studio version) (20:16)
Having Never Written A Note For Percussion (live at Dupont Underground) (22:18)
Review: A most interesting undertaking from Seattle's Further Records here, presenting two quite distinct reinterpretations of a composition from US minimalist James Tenney by former Sandwell District artist Rrose. Having Never Written a Note for Percussion was composed by Tenney back in 1971 and is regarded as a gruelling long form piece for a percussionist to perform. Back in 2012, Rrose did a live improvised take on the piece for a performance at Dupont Underground in Washington DC, and a recording of that forms one side of this album from Further. The other is a separate studio recording by Rrose and both extend Tenney's composition beyond its original eight minutes to a collective hour. Whereas the live version seems rife with tension and foreboding, the studio version is more alluring and hypnotic in its steady progression. Further deserve real applause for facilitating this release!

Review: Michaela Levi aka Micachu is a London-dwelling experimental producer who has been making some of the most daring pop music of our times, and has probably been exposed to a much bigger audience thanks to her award winning score for the film Under The Skin. In the aftermath of that Levi delivered a wonderful tape of maverick electronics for Demdike Stare's self-titled imprint which has now been transferred to the vinyl format. Presented on double LP, Feeling Romantic Feeling Tropical Feeling III runs through a striking thirty tracks of sound manipulation and explorative sonic design. Her cavernous blends of drone are locked into loose grooves thanks to rich swirls of delay and subtle waves of noise with a distinct metallic touch to them. This is true abstraction from beginning to end, where sounds and instruments get chopped up and buried, sliced and diced into shreds of steely-eyed pulses.

Review: There's not much info on the ground regarding this new Paid Reach label, but the involvement of one Gunnar Wendel will mean there are plenty out there wanting to check it out. First surfacing towards the end of Lowtec's great RA 439 podcast for Resident Advisor last year, Paid Reach is described as a "collaboration" with Wendel's Ominira label and features two tracks "edited and produced" by Wendel. Both "Fair Trade Dark" and "Colddrinksnreverse" exist at the more abstract end of the electronic music scale, with the former little more than playfully toying with a modulated loop. "Colddrinksnreverse" meanwhile is around three minutes of phased and phucked vocal samples. Excellent mixtape material basically.

Review: Menjadi marks the onset of a new dawn for Morphine Records, with the album from the Indonesian duo the first in a series of long players to feature co-production duties from the man formerly known as Morphosis, Rabih Beaini. You might notice that handsome full colour sleeve too, and this is how Morphine will also proceed with French-born designer Nathalie Du Pasquier commissioned to paint the covers with the overall artistic direction curated and designed by Tankboys. Menjadi is possibly the first chance for many to immerse in the wholly unique and transcendental sounds of Senyawa as Rully Shabara's vocals interweave with Wukir Suryadi's dynamic implementation of the bambuwukir, a bamboo instrument the Indonesian musician invented himself. It's unlikely you'll hear another LP like this in 2015.

Review: Tapping up the fertile Lisbon scene and its proud individualistic electronic music, Warp Records presents the first volume of CARGAA in a move that will no doubt break the sounds of these artists through to a wider audience, much as happened with the Chicago footwork producers on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works compilations. DJ Marfox and DJ Newdyt Fox kick the EP off with a searing blend of peak time hype full of pealing leads, off beat percussion and subby booms. DJ Nigga Fox meanwhile takes things a little slower, plays down the synth lines and lets the percussion come further forwards in a head-spinning melee of polyrhythms. There's also string laden emotion from Blacksea Naoo MAya, and a sprightly slice of wonky house from DJ Ly-COox proving that in Portugal's capital a whole lot of influences feed into a very unique melting pot.
