Soulman (Villod remix A)
Soulman (Villod remix B)
Review: Regular partners in crime Villalobos and Loderbauer join forces once again to get deep into their minimal tendencies on a pair of remixes for the new Orb release, featuring the mighty Upsetter Lee Scratch Perry on vocals. The A-side mix has a distinctly Villalobos flavour to it, keeping the drums delicate but splashy while an oddball bassline hums underneath, exercising a typical restraint. Side B features a bit more action as the bass comes to life a little more and the dynamic range gets filled with life in the shape of scatty effects and doodles of synthesisers, lifting it above militant austerity.

Stella's Way
Stella's Way (Huxley remix)
Stella's Way (Shall Ocin remix)
Review: Scoring big hits across the modern house underground, Maxxi Soundsystem makes his way to Maceo Plex's Ellum Audio imprint for the warm and soothing tones of "Stella's Way", which centres around a looping synth riff that sounds as though it was lifted straight out of 80s radio. Huxley's remix pares down any such frivolities, homing in on the scattered vocal flourishes and dropping a mean shuffle and off-key chords for some ultimately funky functionality. Shall Ocin rounds things off with a version that capitalises on the lush melodies of the original and bolsters them with additional synths for an equally fuzzy jaunt.

Love Somebody Else (Maceo Plex bonus tool)
Review: We don't often see one-sided vinyl any more, probably because the track is required to be pretty damn good - but nothing to worry about here, Mr.Maceo Plex has taken care of that! This is the Maceo Plex "bonus tool", an acid-filtered house stomper capable of some serious dance floor damage thanks to its thumping kick drum, sexy vocals and growling parades of bass.

Review: This young DJ /producer is one of 2012's most promising new artists - take one listen to Water Jump and it's clear why he is so hyped. "Reception" uses a mutant, noisy take on Chicago house basslines to brutal effect, while "Drone Logic" also revisits the past to create a new vision for the future. There, heavy drums roll in and an old school progressive house bassline - one that sounds more Guerilla than Digweed - is chewed to pieces by bursts of electronic feedback. But it's "A Quiet Life" that really stands out. Underpinned by a splurging bass, haunting angelic voices breeze in as psychedelic drums that have little bearing to traditional house / techno structures explode through the speakers.

Orbiter (Simian Mobile Disco mix - version 1)
Orbiter (original)
Orbiter (Simian Mobile Disco mix - version 2)
Review: Lifting one of the cuts from his recent album for Kompakt, Simian Mobile Disco get enlisted to take John Tejada to task with two different remixes that highlight interesting paths for the British duo. On "Version 1" of "Orbiter", SMD take an overtly Artificial Intelligence approach to the track with a broken, stepping drum machine rhythm that used to be so typical for techno, redolent with plush synthesisers from drawn out notes to punchy stabs all harmonizing in a wondrous melancholy. "Version 2" sees them strapping the same core ingredients to a driving but deep house template, with the same early electronica references leading the way into transcendental dancefloor abandon.

Soulfood
Hard Compression
Black Breds
Womb
Review: Coming correct with a sizable double pack, Mr G is at it again with his refined and stripped back take on the middle ground between techno and house (just don't call it tech house). "Soulfood" thrusts ahead with an insistent yet minimal beat while the rich spread of synths range from mellow chords to nagging high frequency tweaks, while "Hard Compression" heads in a smoother direction of deep house with hypnotic loops of soul licks. "Black Breds" is all lounge-friendly, Rick Wade-esque house on top and techno kick underneath, and "Womb" heads into the Alton Miller realms of cheery, chord-laden groove with those G-funk synths warbling over the top.

Megacity
Mozaic
Nightbeat
Review: The Megacity EP is apparently the first of several collaborations between Mark E and keyboardist Nat Woodcock under the Project E banner due over the coming months on the former's Merc imprint. This new project sees a change in direction for Merc away from the sample based (and very successful) releases from ED, Quaid et al and towards a professed "strange cosmic territory". In truth, those distinctive Mark E hallmarks are very much still present across the three tracks here and it's all still resolutely deep house; weighty grooves and slow burning arrangement progression - only now they are complemented by the nimble key playing of Woodcock. This is perhaps most evident on the smeared Utopian vibes of the brilliant "Mosaic".

Crave (original mix) (6:08)
Crave (Deetron Crave dub) (9:46)
Review: Andy Butler and company have come a long way since the days of "Blind" and all those other stylish disco outings on DFA. Having long since turned their attention to retro-futurist house, the New York band here turn up with Deetron for a slice of wonky, analogue house-pop. The original version is more H&LA than Deetron -all hipster-ish vocals, '80s bleeps and shuffling space-pop groovery. There's a touch of disco in the grubby guitars, but they're barely audible above the 8-bit bleeps and swinging drums. Deetron himself provides a tougher, faster, more techno-centric dub that has "basement anthem" written all over it.
