Review: Ukranian lo-fi genius Vakula is back and if audaciously tackling Steve Reich wasn't enough, he's taking on possibly his most ambitious project yet with "Dedicated to Jim Morrison". The title says it all really, in this brazen tribute to the sixties rock legend. On the first side you've got "For Jim" with its bluesy, boozy, typically sixties rock, while "The Canyon Road" is definitely the track on here to really channel the sound of The Doors. Then the acoustic country twang of "Mississippi Delta" carries off a southern charm. On the flip you've got "The Human Abstract" which is one truly hazy affair and features some of William Blake's' spoken word poetry recited by friend Andrei Dubinin. "Airolg" sounds like, well, Van Morrison's "Gloria" (once famously covered by The Doors) and "Tien Beach" features sublime tremoloed slide guitar, sounding like riding off into a sunset. Sehr Interessant!

Review: Anyone who fell in love first with this dreampop duo following the twilit strains of their Sub Pop debut 'Teen Dream' - all languorous summer haze and melodious abandon - will certainly not be disappointed by 'Depression Cherry', despite its slightly daunting title. Yet longtime fans of Beach House - the band who're in many ways the spiritual torchbearers of the ethereal sound of 4AD and particularly Cocteau Twins - will find strange new depths and substance in this fifth platter, being a still more plaintive and minimal take on their trademark aural spell, stripped down to create a wash of sound as emotionally charged as it is blissfully beguiling.

Out (2:08)
Review: Along with the extended retrospective detailing their earlier music escapades that's surfaced this week, U.S. based reissue gods Superior Viaduct have masterfully relicensed Liquid Liquid's final iconic Optimo single, originally out on 99 Records in 1983 and still a heavily coveted four tracker from all corners of the digging spectrum. "Optimo" - an utterly break-ridden, funked-out monster - "Scraper" and "Out" are all full bodied and sublime on the low frequencies, but it's "Cavern" that gets all the attention on here, bass-heavy roller filled with wavy vocals, a heavy percussion swing and a penchant for being mastered by the kings of hip hop and house. Totally essential 12" in our books.

Review: Yo La Tengo, at some thirty-one years standing, now find themselves no less than indie institution, yet far from showing any signs of complacency, they're still possessed of a particular sensitivity and lightness of touch that serves to make them both unique and treasured. A case in point is this curious collection, comprising cover versions as well as re-interpretations of previous material - the band sound just as quietly confident and strangely touching reinterpreting The Cure as they do Hank Williams, paying homage to influences while gracing all they tackle with their trademark charm and finesse, in another triumph for these glorious eternal wallflowers.

Review: This outfit fronted by sometimes New Pornographers man Dan Bayer is now onto their tenth album, yet throughout this tenure at the fringes of the indie rock world their abstract, idiosyncratic and acutely personal assault has invariably shown signs of reinvention at every turn. Moreover, on 'Poison Season', they've excelled themselves, creating an atmospheric, melancholic and strangely sardonic song-cycle that expertly tackles the whys and wherefores of cutthroat urban life. Styles may vary here from brass-abetted bluster to wistful chamber pop, yet what he have here is essentially a 21st century variant on the art-pop iconoclasm of vintage Bowie, Lou Reed, and later-period Leonard Cohen, all three lofty comparisons not made lightly.

Review: Melbourne's Royal Headache have undergone a turbulent couple of years that have seen mercurial frontman Shogun split up his own band - seemingly in self-disgust - despite the fact that they had caused a near-riot at Sydney's Vivid Festival. Yet thankfully he's not only come to his senses but helped deliver a record that sees their heart-on-sleeve, boisterous and soulful attack in full flight. With his vocals in the forefront more than on their debut, and memorable songs to boot, they've never sounded better. Raw and ragged yet deliriously melodious, 'High' is the sound of confusion transfused into joy, and a freewheeling modern punk gem.

Review: Spector, fronted by indie journeyman Fred MacPherson, set their stall out initially as champions of an unapologetically stadium-bound brand of indie rock, and if their reality hasn't quite matched their aspirations, it hasn't been for want of trying. Moreover, 'Moth Boys' show they have skill and wit to match their bombast - buoyed by MacPherson clever lyrics and lugubrious baritone, it makes unlikely bedfellows of a sepulchral Interpol-esque tone and upbeat '80s synth pop, resulting in a catchy and addictive confection by a band whose choruses and sparkling arrangements are equal parts brash confidence and understated class.
