Cha
Dracula
Review: Arriving on blood red clear vinyl, Funkineven delivers two more potent examples of his "fuck what everyone else is doing" approach. Lead cut "Cha" starts in a manner reminiscent of D'Marc Cantu's M>O>S Deep gem "How Are We Doing" but you always know it's gonna curve off into some weird place, which the track duly does, rolling out a crack unit of killer jacking drums and deviant bass splurges that are clearly aimed at testing the limits of a club system. On the flip "Dracula" comes from the same bloodline as the infamous Funkinevil collaboration with that MF Kyle Hall, with rough drums hits getting attacked from all angles by the motherlode of all jagged acid. Yet another essential plate from the Apron studios!

Silicon Scally - "Deodexed"
Boris Divider - "Primary Functions"
Sync 24 & Deixis - "Haunted World"
Morphology - "Dark Star"
Review: Cultivated Electronics brings us a fine selection of some of the most talented electro masters around. First up, Silicon Sally introduces their liquid-like synth growls on "Deodexed", a track that's liable to hurt both the mind and the soul, while Boris Divider is on "Primary Functions", a wonderfully stripped-back affair. The flip sees Sync24 and Deixis in "Haunted World", a frightening expose of sparse bleeps and mutant FX. It's up to Morphology to close things off with "Dark Star", whose alignment of spacey chords and chilling basslines is almost too much to bear...

Sturm Bricht Los
Review: Yes! Dutch royalty Alden Tyrell and Ingmar Pauli re-engage their rarely seen Sumerian Fleet alliance after some two years of dormancy, gracing the equally release-shy Creme Eclipse branch of Creme Organization with the excellent Sturm Bricht Los EP. Arriving just in time for your Halloween discotheque needs, this four track release sticks to the creepy formula struck upon with their debut eponymous Clone West Coast emission, touching on everything from Adult to Fad Gadget to Minimal Wave ish and yet blessed with their own downtrodden touch. We can't top this description from the label themselves: "like someone finally removed those damn sunglasses from the Sisters of Mercy dude and showed him the world was an even sadder place than he imagined."

Review: On Luxury Problems, Mancunian producer Andy Stott builds on the knackered house and techno sound showcased in last year's brace of brilliance, Passed Me By and We Stay Together. The album will contain eight tracks recorded in the last 12 months, with five of the songs featuring vocals from his old piano teacher who Stott hadn't seen since he was a teenager in 1996, with the opening track "Numb" seeing her looped and layered vocals exuding a cinematic quality. The paranoid, dense, slow-moving qualities that Stott has made his signature remain, but they've been toyed with and manipulated, and the vocal elements feel like a calculated gamble - one that has truly paid off. Modern Love go all out on presentation too, with Luxury Problems arriving in a superb gatefold sleeve. Highly recommended.

Fam Fam
Review: "Game & Performance" from Deux remains one of the favourite transmissions in the ever blossoming discography of Minimal Wave, while the duo of Gerard Pelletier and Cati Tete are clearly second only to fellow Lyon act In Aeternam Vale in Veronica Vasicka's affections when it comes to her personal favourite French exponents of 80s minimal synth. Having already released a Deux retrospective in 2010 entitled Decadence, the Brooklyn label now presents Golden Dreams, a four track EP of studio and demo tracks that Pelletier and Tete recorded from 1985 onwards. Typically all four tracks are previously unreleased and have been newly remastered for this 12" issue - on golden vinyl no less! Final track "Fam Fam" perhaps comes closest to recapturing the magic of "Game & Performances" stripped down minimal synth compositions and hushed vocal duets, but all four tracks will prove temptation personified to Minimal Wave regulars.

Plastic Love
Nanikaga...
Review: Plastic Love sees Minimal Wave further document the prolific Sympathy Nervous output of Japanese artist Yosihumi Niinuma following last year's Automaticism LP. Though Niinuma's recordings span some three decades from the 1970s onwards, the focus of this collection narrows to the period between 1979 and 1980 and consists entirely of tracks that never made it beyond his studio. Plastic Love essentially demonstrates how hard it is to pin down Sympathy Nervous stylistically, with the nine tracks perfectly capturing Niinuma's stylistic diversity as well as his inherent eccentricity. Opening track "Khaki Cloud" is a balls out explosion of cascading synth textures, percussion and Lee Scratch Perry style vocal nonsense that seems all the more devilish when followed by the more restrained but equally oddball "Antawa Suguni", proto techno experimentalism at its finest. Niinuma's wife contributes vocals to "Butoubyou No Syounen" an exercise in pure synth pop that's one of the highlights here along with the guttural post punk dub brilliance of "Untitled 1".

My Life So Far (dub version)
Phantom Love
Review: Dive fully into My Life So Far, a thrillingly epic taste of what to expect from Breathless, the forthcoming new album by Italian synthwave artist Mushy. The prolific alias of Valentina Fanigliulo, Mushy is set to expand on the ghostly harmonies and glacial rhythms that permeated her debut album Faded Heart, if the tracks here are any true indication. Three differing versions of the title track dominate proceedings here, with the downtrodden album and dub versions complimented by the widescreen, shoegaze version which features the legendary 4AD group A.R. Kane - rarely have you wanted to wrap yourself duvet-like in a wall of reverb more than when this track descends over your senses. A non album track in "Phantom Love" adds that extra frisson of temptation, while the presentation is every bit as lovely as you'd expect from a Minimal Wave release.

Julie Is A TV Set
Review: "Hello. My name is Ohama, and I live on a potato farm in Western Canada" went the memorably deadpan opening to "The Drum", Ohama's contribution to Minimal Wave Tapes Vol 2 earlier this year, and it's also the opening track on this full length exploration of the Canadian producer's work from Minimal Wave. What's most striking about The Potato Farm Tapes however is the sense of paranoia and detachment that Ohama clearly felt recording these tracks from his studio basement beneath his parents' potato farm in Rainier, Alberta, during the latter stages of The Cold War. Intriguingly, Ohama's lyrics are heavily focused on technophobia and the subversive power of television and mass media which stands in stark contrast to the techno centric nature - with keyboards, drum machines, vocoders and analogue reel tape all utilised to create complex productions that blended found sounds with audio lifted from TV. Some of Ohama's earliest recordings from his first cassette only release Midnite News form the basis of The Potato Farm Tapes along with rare tracks that previously appeared on compilations. Furthermore, the label have printed a must read interview between Ohama and Brandon Hocura on the inner sleeve that offers some brilliant insight into this collection.
