Instrumental Fantasy (6:14)
Acid Fantasy (4:09)
La Chiave (7:32)
La Chiave (dub beats) (3:46)
Review: Given the production reputations of Eric Duncan and Dean Meredith across the myriad of solo and collaborative projects they've been involved in over the years, the prospect of some joint releases on Phil South's Golf Channel label is one to savour! Some months after the trickling of white label promos, the first of two Dr Dunks and The Rhythm Odyssey 12"s arrives in glorious finished sleeves and the four tracks Instrumental Fantasy are equal to expectations. Meredith's much documented mastery of analogues really comes to the fore on the title track in the shape of a bonkers bassline that leads you on a merry dance all over the place. A shorter 303 laden and heavily jacking revision follows in the shape of "Acid Fantasy" though it's the opening gambit on the B Side that really caught our ear. "La Chiave" is an immense slab of psychedelically infused industrial disco with all manner of tripped out, echo laden FX occurring in the depths of the channels - we could totally see Ron Hardy's eyes lighting up with joy at this gem were he still alive and well today.

Obssesion (Last Waltz remix)
Obssesion
Review: Having firmly established themselves in the affections of the vinyl buying public, the ever expanding Tusk Wax operation don't rest on their laurels with this eighth release. The mysterious Jose Manuel - we presume an established producer operating under a pseudonym - is at the controls, and the Latin name should inform you with regards to the style within. The two A Side tracks from Manuel are essentially flamenco centric Balearica driven by strident mid tempo grooves - sort of like Quiet Village decamping to Sintra, Portugal and getting inspired by their mystical surrounds - while murky B Side jam "Obsession" is something altogether different. North East troupe Last Waltz step up to remix this latter track, invoking the spirit of John Carpenter with aplomb. Kudos to Tusk Wax for looking to expand on their sound!

Lipstick & Lace
Not In Your Nature
New Ships
Review: They might sound like a pair of hairdressers but Benoit & Sergio apply their cutting skills in a much more important field: the studio. As with previous B&S releases, the emphasis is on crisp production finishes, soft 80s soul boogie and the super-sweet vocal tones. "Lipstick & Lace" is instant yacht material thanks to its salubrious bassline and baby-smooth groove. "Not In Your Nature" is more authentically retro with an almost 10CC vibe to proceedings. "New Ships" finalises the deal with a riff that wouldn't go amiss on 2020 Vision. Beautiful stuff.

Wonder (Cos & Mex remix)
Wonder (original)
Wonder (Ray Mang remix)
Wonder (Rune & Oyvind remix)
Wonder (Seahawks remix)
Review: Norse disco veteran Rune Lindbaek collaborates with celebrated vocalist Kurt Maloo on this excellent 12" on the formers Drum Island imprint - just check the remixers involved! In original form, "Wonder" is a delightfully laid back track with the merest pitter of drums hidden deep beneath Maloo's woozily inviting vocal and Lindbaek's mellow arrangement. Surrounding it Cos Mes and Ray Mang both elect to implement more of a groove, with the former electing for a stuttering, crunchy approach whilE the latter goes all Compass Point on a punky funky reggae disco remix. Flip over and Lindbaek himself collaborates with Oyvind Blikstad on a more uptempo echo and FX laden remix which is kind of dwarfed in that department by the sprawling, tape delay heavy dub revision by Seahawks.

Psychemagik - "Dreams" (Crystal Visions remix) (9:23)
Red Ken - "Big Love" (Big Four Letter Word mix) (6:17)
Review: Psychemagik love Fleetwood Mac. Their love is so enduring that the dusty fingered editors/DJs/revered record collectors have gone so far as to found Fleetmac Wood, a club night dedicated to the work of Fleetwood, Nicks, McVie and the various other manifestations, where anything goes so long as it's Fleetwood Mac related. Their remix of "Dreams" has been getting playtime at the night - and by other well regarded DJs - and finally makes an appearance on this limited 12". What's immediately noticeable about the Crystal Visions Remix of "Dreams" is how much they add to the track without messing with the original's essence - it's also a lot more inventive than Psychemagik's 2009 edit of "Everywhere" which shows how far they've come in three years. Flip over for a great extension of Juno's favourite Mac moment "Big Love" from AOR Disco's Red Ken.

Foggy Twilights
Review: With recent releases for Internasjonal and Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space Records, Los Angeles based producer Secret Circuit (otherwise known as Eddie Ruscha) has had a breakthrough year with his brittle synth jams, taking inspiration from Balearic disco and minimal wave alike. However, he's been a prolific producer since 1996, and this record on Emotional Response, entitled Tropical Psychedelics, collects productions from Rusha up until 2010 that have previously only seen the light of day on cassette releases. Described by the label as a "Balearic-Tropical-Afro-Psychedelic whirl", the album packs a rich palette of analogue textures into its ten tracks, from the Afro dub of "Afrobotics", through the hazy, beatless combination of piano and analogue synth on "Psouvenirs" to the psychedelic tropicalia of "Foggy Twilights".

Circles
Circles (Long Drive Home)
Glow
Glow (808 tape edit)
Review: Golf Channel engages in London Bus tactics once more with no less than two killer plates from Dr Dunks and The Rhythm Odyssey arriving this week. Whilst the accompanying Instrumental Fantasy 12" is on a bonkers Chi town jack and industrial disco tip, this Circles 12" finds our transatlantic pairing in a more horizontal midtempo mood. Each of the four tracks are ostensibly stylistic variations on a musical theme, with the title track a wondrously hypnotic delight described all too accurately by Golf Channel as a long lost remake of "E2-E4". Stripping away the drums, the Long Drive Home take on "Circles" tugs at your emotions even more, while on the flip "Glow" takes the same musical ingredients but channels them through early 80s disco dub with equally worthy results.

Keep On
Sunday
Review: KZA welcomes Marvin Dan III and Lee "The Black Belt" Guy back for a second outing on his prolific Let's Get Lost imprint with suitably incendiary results. The great Arthur Russell is the subject of revision on "Keep On" with Marvin & Guy expertly rewiring a classic into one long lolloping, echo laden groove. The flip provides a stylistic contrast as "Sunday" drags you unmercifully into acid throbbing proto house territory, replete with cooing diva harmonies, huge piano riffs and knackered kick drums. Like much of the previous output on Let's Get Lost, both sides should ensure this 12" will remain in your box for a good while.

Let No Man Put Asunder (Ron Hardy edit - unreleased)
Your Love (original unreleased version female vocals)
Review: The much welcomed Ron Hardy edit series continues apace with another two divine tweaks from the seminal Chicago DJ's vaults. First up is a track synonymous with the history of The Music Box's finest, First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder". It's a delicate touch he applied to one of the all time greats of disco, but it accentuates the celebratory escapism in the track, a quality that came to define the style of Hardy and his ilk. His edit of "Your Love" hones right in on the drums, hammering out the finest Chicago box bashing goodness, although this unreleased version features additional female vocals.

Feel Like Makin' Love
Review: Onur Engin is one of the few producers whose edits consistently hit the spot. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Engin has a subtle touch, an approach that pays the source material due reverence. More often than not, this old-fashioned approach pays dividends. This ninth volume of his popular OE Edits series boasts four more hits, from the spiritual disco-funk of "Expansions" (a re-cut of Lonnie Liston Smith's original), to the sweaty closeness of Roberta Flack re-version "Feel Like Makin' Love". For the Balearic heads, there's also a delicious version of Santana's "Aqua Marine", and a dash of spiritual jazz in the form of "Maracatu". They'll go like hot cakes, so don't sleep.

When The Past Was Present (Pachanga Boys Red remix)
When The Past Was Present (Pachanga Boys Blue remix)
Last Land (Kenton Slash Demon remix)
Destiny (Bullion version)
Review: When Permanent Vacation announced plans to release a series of remixes of tracks from John Talabot's debut set ƒin, there was naturally much fervent anticipation given how wonderfully colourful the Spaniard's music is and the respective high profile rolodexes of both label and artist. The standard has been set well and truly high on this first volume which features excellent and truly diverse revisions from Pachanga Boys, Kenton Slash Demon and Bullion. The Pachanga Boys duo of Superpitcher and Rebolledo spring a surprise, delivering no less than three colour specific versions on "When The Past Was Present", allegedly rhythmically coded to be played at various points of a club night, yet all very much in sync with their own infectious Hippie Dance output of recent times. These three remixes hog the 12" so Permanent Vacation have pressed up an accompanying 10" which houses the remaining remixes, with Danish troupe Kenton Slash Demon proving their underrated talents with a ruffed up B Boy refix of "Last Land" while Bullion is in ebullient form with a totally new recasting of the Pional featuring "Destiny".

Night Braces
Review: Brooklyn's Discovery Recordings hits release number three with a killer drop from Free Magic and JKriv. It's hard to look past the slow burning delights of title track "Catalano" here, with killer pared back percussive elements supporting the supple groove and sultry vocals. "Headbands" meanwhile is a more summery affair with a more discernable vocal lead and insouciant keys; flip over for the chunkiest cut of the lot, "Night Braces", which is perfectly suited for the late, late hours. Definitely a label to keep an eye on. Limited hand stamped pressing too!

New York Edits (1)
New York Edits (2)
Review: The overabundance of poorly executed Ableton "disco edits" seems to have curbed in recent times, allowing those with the obvious knowledge and skill for the art the freedom to shine. Still choosing to operate under a cloak of mystery and intrigue, a second round of edited and untitled disco oddities from New York Edits arrives this week bearing the trademark skull and "Made In NYC" stamps. Described only as the well kept secret weapons of a famous New York record shop owner, such avoidance of the truth didn't stop the inaugural volume swiftly selling out and it should bear no obstacle here either. The heavy string and organ arrangements of the lead track hint at disco classicism, while the flip is on more of a funk heavy basement tip - both edits do however demonstrate a mastery of the style you'd imagine would please Walter Gibbons (RIP).

Luther
Review: The mysterious Situation gang return with the Lionel & Luther 12", marking the first drop on the freshly minted ENUM imprint. The clue is in the title here, with the A- a killer tweak of a cover of Commodores's classic ode to everyone's favourite lazy day of the week, with upfront disco instrumentation and a throbbing Italo arpeggio. Flip over for a loopy, sax-fuelled, insouciant tweak of a Luther Vandross classic, which comes full of tight funk licks, squalls of sax and - of course - those great vocals.

Get Yourself Together
Strong Love (Everlasting)
Review: Hot off the back of being hailed the "edit king of 2012" by Gilles Peterson and dropping THAT Gold Fingers release, Kon steps back into Basic Fingers mode to deliver two more sublime disco boogie cuts for the more funk friendly floor. "Get It Together" has summer written all over it, burning into action with a killer horn loop before the bass kicks and the track heads for the stars. Kon demonstrates his skill and understanding of structure throughout, dropping the groove to a lull before building it right back up throughout, and the sweetly soulful vocals have that eminently sing-along quality. The tempo drops to a low slung bump on the flip as Leroy Burgess gets expanded with equal aplomb on the seemingly infinte "Strong Love (Everlasting)".
