The Phantom - "Across The River, Beneath The Trees" (12:32)
The Phantom - "Europa" (11:33)
Sad City - "Limbo" (21:56)
Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Baring Stars
Review: Stephen Hitchell and Rod 'the god' Modell's CV313 project returns with yet another album length excursion in the shape of Baring Stars. Consisting of new CV313 material, this hour long CD takes the shape of an extended live set from the pair with a mixing desk the main instrument around which all manner of analogue equipment was used. Sets like this should be used as examples in the dictionary definition of immersion, with Hitchell and Modell really reaching deep into the sonic ether for some truly rewarding ambient electronics. A fine addition to the CV313 discography.

Dizziness That Shakes Rivers & Mountains (18:34)
Abstract Painting 114-115_3#03 (12:24)
Abstract Painting 104-105_7#02 (7:50)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from Stuart Leath's Emotional Response label; an in-depth exploration of the "outer reaches" of drone and ambient. It's a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of Serbian maverick Abul Mogard's opener - a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that's as freaky as it is beautiful. Stefan Schwander dons his now familiar Harmonious Thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer Steve Reich. Both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

Dewy (SW version) (7:03)
Review: The Kimochi label has been steadily releasing quality output over the last four years and they've been responsible for introducing us to a pool of new talent from the ambient corners. This latest beautifully presented 12" comes in their usual house style and comes from UD, an unknown artist who has already released one EP for the label last year. "Muy Casera" starts things off with colourful minimalism thanks to its glitchy sonics, while "Meticulous" breaks the groove and takes the beeps to an irregular tempo. "After The Cremation" is looser and more heavily focussed on cinematic pads, whereas "Pankow" takes subtle bursts of noise and places them above grey-scaled low frequencies. There's some special appearances on the B-side in the form of two remixes by Leipzig's Mix Mup and Sued's SW: the former gives his own version of "NFL CC DUB", a slow and chuggy beat burning below mild pads, whereas the latter interpretation of "Dewy" contains that classic SUED sound, a bag of rickety percussion and rich soundscapes. Don't miss it, gone before you know it.

Roedelius Schneider - "Offen" (2:07)
Schneider Kacirek - "Chambers" (3:38)
Schneider Kacirek - "Tired Resistance" (4:14)
Schneider Kacirek - "Elements Objects" (4:08)
Review: Boof! Another RSD 2015 corker! This collaboration between the great Roedelius Schneider and Schneider Kacirek (yes, we know, it's quite a mouthful!) is comprised of all unreleased material from the legendary Bureau B recording sessions - which resulted in the pioneering "Tiden" and "Stunden" masterpieces - and is downright essential material for anyone who even flirts with the idea of being into ambient and drone music, let alone electronic music as a whole! The first three cuts on the A-side are by Roedelius himself, a gorgeous weave of electro-acoustic delight containing wonky piano keys and plenty of electronic manipulation and fluttering. On the B-side, Kacirek's three songs are equally as deep and visceral, but also wonderfully cutting-edge for the time...intricate blends of percussion and instrumentation culminate into a truly abstract and yet enthralling journey into sound design.

Review: It was, apparently, a desire to release music by Kuniyuki Takahashi - one of Japan's most versatile electronic musicians of the last two decades - that inspired the launch of Mule Musiq a decade ago. Takahashi has released umpteen albums under his Koss alias for the label since, and here delivers another: the eerie, beautiful and evocative Silence. Inspired by his love for piano players such as Bill Evans, Abdullah Ibrahim and Lyle Mays, the album fund Takahashi in full on ambient mode, combining dub techno style textures (but no percussion or grooves, at least in the usual sense) and field recordings, with ambient electronics and, most prominently, beautiful piano lines. As a result, it's a hugely calming set, but one that ebbs and flows evocatively throughout.

Review: Robert Reuter, or otherwise known as Roger 23, is quite simply a music aficionado with great production skills who has popped up on quite a few European house and techno labels over the last few years. From Playhouse to Meakusma, Roger resurfaces with an extended EP for the newly crowned Mensch Musik packing seven cuts spanning vast drone soundscapes and subtle swirls of percussive electronica. This is exactly the sort of thing we're loving at the moment, it's that sort of solitary music which just works so dam well in a club...maybe at the beginning of a set, in its centre or at the end. However you use it, it's a hugely enjoyable listening experience throughout.
