Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: Ruins is the 10th LP from Portland artist Grouper, an incredible set that's found it's home on the inimitable and always on- point Kranky label...and yes, it's another fine outing from the voco-noise head. Tracks like "Clearing", however, show another side to Grouper's usual rough edge. There's an element of smoothness to those sombre keys and far-out vocals. It's basically an ambient album with an extra layer of soul in its core - check "Made Of Air" for a seriously trippy set of soundscapes.

Review: David Kennedy aka Pearson Sound is not one for releasing music a-la LIES, preferring instead to hold off until he's got something really special. The Hessle Audio co-founder come through with a delicious and conniving little 7" on his self-titled label, in what seems like a prolongation of some of his earlier work. Without a beat in sight, Kennedy delivers the good anyway and creates two lovely grooved out thin air....or rather, out of gorgeous synth manipulations. This is one for the heads and come recommended...

Review: Coming from a classical piano background, Nils Frahm has certainly turned into one dark dude! Having already released plenty of works on a myriad of labels, he lands on London-based Erase Tapes with what is probably one of his wildest pieces of music to date. Spanning 12 tracks in total, Frahm goes from joyful odes to the piano over to psychedelic synth improvisations to what sound like intricate tape manipulations, nutty drum-machine programming and a bag full o'field recordings. If you're into the idea of Tchaikovsky on some serious amounts of stimulants then look no further, this guy is shaping the way pianos are played...

Review: The latest show stopping release from RVNG INTL's archival series offers the first authorized re-edition of Craig Leon's pair of early '80s albums Nommos and Visiting. For the uninitiated, Leon is a composer and producer who largely helped shape the early NYC punk and new wave scene with his assistance on landmark debuts from Suicide, Richard Hell, The Ramones and Blondie. His own music however is something different, with both Nommos and Visiting highly sought after among the more cosmically-minded crate diggers, with the former the subject of several unofficial bootlegs and a particular favourite of the cosmic daddy himself Danielle Baldelli. Inspired by an exhibit of extra terrestrial sculpture in New York, Leon crafted some truly ahead of it's time electronic music on both Nommos and Visiting and this RVNG edition presents the albums as s Leon had originally intended, under the banner of Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music in homage to Harry Smith's similarly titled influential collection of folk music issued some 20 years previously.

Review: Hailing from Northern Italy, both Tempelhof and Gigi Masin are dutifully prolonging the cosmic era founded by the likes of Beppe Loda throughout the '80s. Disco, glimmers of drone and funk, all wrapped in a sugary indie coating would be the best way to describe this crew's musical output. "Red Venus" is particularly reminiscent of something which could have featured in the infamous Loda mixtapes, where the artists are certainly not afraid to steer away from concrete styles, and instead, weave through different feelings and inspirations. The jazzy feel of "Interstellar Bop" is also particularly seductive, and it simply shows that this in an LP to be heard through and through. On a beach, in a bedroom, or accompanied by a few beers, whatever suits you.

Music For Steamed Rocks
Meet Your Creator
I Only Have Eyes For You
Review: This year's Record Store Day has been one of the absolute biggest in the event's history, and it really has been quite hard to keep up with all the sheer quality of the music, both old and new. In the case of the latter, America's most critically acclaimed experimental producer, OPN, has come through with yet another doozy for the Warp institution. As per usual, its ambient with a veritable twist, or rather, OPN's signature weirdness at the forefront. "Music For Steamed Rocks" appears to be a calm, serene blend of sonic landscapes, but it's repeatedly interrupted by violent swirls of noise and distortion, making it a real aural spectacle. "Meet Your Creator" is similarly angelic on the surface, but that is quickly dealt with thanks to subtle infusions of metallic atmospherics and arpeggiating melodies. On the B-side, "I Only Have Eyes For You" is definitely our choice cut, and the label no-music certainly fits right in. Deranged samples, twisted blends of field recordings and a deluge of pads. Wonderful.

Review: For some reason, the world's foremost ambient explorers have always been prolific. Take the sadly departed Pete Namlook, who released 10 albums in 1994 alone. Brock Van Wey is cut from similar cloth. It was only last week that he delivered an album under his BVDub pseudonym; here, he returns to his given name for a similarly tactile, two-CD voyage into the world of beatless dreamscapes. The Namlook comparisons are understandable; like the once mighty German, Van Wey specializes in creating sprawling pieces based around gradual shifts in long, drawn out chords, slowly shifting melodies (check the Satie-inspired "Can't Go Home Without You"), delay-laden instruments and epic atmospherics. When he gets it right - as he does on Home - there are few greater exponents of the art of ambient.

Let A Hundred Flowers Bloom

Denominazione Version
Review: New York's Mister Saturday Night is one of a handful of labels that are genuinely capable of surprising us with each successive release (as their thrillingly eclectic forthcoming Brothers & Sisters compilation brilliantly proved). For example, who would have predicted that this first MSN 10" single (the first from sometime L.I.E.S man Gunnar Haslam) would open with two and a half minutes of dark, intense ambience and distant Middle Eastern singing? Elsewhere, Haslam inches further towards the dancefloor, retaining the dark and exotic feel on "Discouraged", before pummeLling us with discordant, delay-laden DJ tool "Denomiazione Version". Brilliantly left-of-centre stuff all round.

Review: There's always been something rather special about King Britt's ability to effortlessly switch musical focus between projects and aliases. Contrast, for example, the retro-soul giddiness of Sylk 130, the electronic polyrhythms and heavy bruk of Oba Funke, and the trippy electronic darkness of his work under the baffling Fhloston Paradigm pseudonym. This debut album under that alias - on the back of a handful of singles a few years back - is predictably magical, mixing spaced-out textures and stargazing synths with off-kilter rhythms, loose jazz beats and Detroit-inspired grooves. Dark and atmospheric, with a touch of the Jeff Mills about it (certainly conceptually, if not aesthetically), The Phoenix makes for mesmerizing listening from start to finish.

Review: Back in 2011, Gerd Janson's Running Back introduced many people to the music LA producer Diego Herrera makes as Suzanne Kraft with the Green Flash EP that was as vivid in presentation as it was in tone. You'll be hearing a lot from Diego Herrera this year, with some high profile collaborative releases with Secret Circuit on the way; an album as Blase on ESP Institute and an Odd Numbers hookup with Willie Burns for Rush Hour's No 'Label'. Before all that, Gerd Janson welcomes Herrera, er, back into the fold with this vinyl issue of the Missum CDr that introduced the Suzanne Kraft project back in 2010. In contrast to the disco-tinged house music of the aforementioned Green Flash EP, the seven tracks on Missum take on a more experimental tone, with beats largely absent in favour of some heavily textured ambient soundscapes produced with a Tascam 464 Portastudio four-track recorder.

Breathe This Air (Asleep version)
Open Eye Signal (Asleep version)
Review: Taking a new approach to a few tracks from his world-conquering Immunity LP, Jon Hopkins delivers some cosy, nocturnal alternatives to his usually wild and ranging bombast with a host of helping hands. "Immunity" is hushed down to a plaintive murmur fuelled by lingering piano notes with King Creosote on the mic, while Raphaelle Standell joins in on a low-frequency rumination of "Form By Firelight". Those vocal tracks sound positively lively in comparison to the "Asleep Versions" of "Breathe This Air" and "Open Eye Signal", which move with a glacial pace that befits Hopkins' pastoral style perfectly.

Review: The addition of Alessandro Cortini to Hospital Productions with this Sonno LP can be lined alongside Ron Morelli and Ninos Du Brasil as examples of Dominick Fernow's enduring capacity to surprise as a label owner. Fans of Nine Inch Nails will be more than familiar with the Bologna-born Cortini who served the long running American industrial rock band twice, though more recently the musician has gained a degree of prominence for his recordings under his own name and the Sonoio guise. The latter project in particular has seen Cortini experiment prolifically with the Buchla synth to celebrated results, making the chosen methods for his Hospital debut somewhat of a departure. Sonno consists of nine truly immersive recordings made in unspecified hotel rooms using a Roland MC202 synthesiser and a delay pedal with the results described as quite aptly as "beautifully restrained yet oddly emotive".

Ragged One (reprise)
Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.

Review: Weaving finds Seattle label Further coaxing a wonderful album of meditative synth and ambient music out of Jo Johnson, who is perhaps best known for her role as a DJ in the London-based Bleep43 collective. Dig a bit deeper and Johnson's musical heritage stretches back to the 90s London indie scene as part of various bands, whilst more recently she's been engaged as part of VLF with fellow Bleep43 member Emile Facey (aka Plant43). This album feels far removed from the electro one might expect from Johnson however. Opening with a homage to Johnson's primary influence Alice Coltrane in "Ancestral Footsteps", Weaving unfolds as one of those albums that welcomes you in from the off and it's all too easy to get lost amidst the luxuriant flourishes and moods that follow.

Review: Well, needless to say, but Throne Of Blood have bloody done it again. After a strong year thanks to a series of superb 12" releases, the US label has come through with a mesmerising compilation of electronic splendour from a mixed bag of some of our most hotly tipped artists. No other way pf describing it apart form telling you our picks, which are plenty due to the quality throughout all of this release. Juju & Jordash's opener "Stroop", a mystical journey into liquid synths and modular percussion; Professor Genius' aka J.Velez's horror soundtrack approach on "Vista"; and Steve Moore's prophetic bundle of slow-cooking oscillations on "Forever.Alone, Immortal". All in all, this is kind of unmissable and it's so good to seeing artists who are typically tied down to dance tracks being able to branch out into their own reveries. Recommended.

Review: Although the past several years have seen ambient musician Christian Fennesz collaborating with a number of high profile figures - Ryuchi Sakamoto to name one - as well as release an EP, cassette, and soundtrack, the Austrian's last full solo LP was 2008?s Black Sea, making Becs very eagerly awaited indeed. A conceptual follow-up to 2001's seminal Endless Summer, Becs supposedly eschews the drone-based productions of Black Sea and sees a return to the "more florid pop mechanisms" of Endless Summer, something evident across the searing yet colourful textures that make up the album.

Review: After the first split release from Lenta and Ahu last year, Shahr Farang is back with another intriguing, enveloping take on minimalistic electronics for the true meditators out there. With not a dancefloor concern in sight the listener is transported into evocative soundscapes populated by broad strokes of pad and detailed found sounds, while the most delicate pulses of rhythm fall in patient measures that would make Jan Jelinek feel somewhat hyperactive. "Love Is Silence" is the most steady 4/4 track on the release, while "Divine Light" spins off into anchorless swirls of hum and shrieks from no definable source. "Bare Shoulder" flexes on a reduced beat tip, while "You Still Come To Me In My Dreams" worms some wistful samples into the intricate and dusty surroundings to great effect.

Review: Ambient explorers Dalhous - AKA producers Marc Dalla and Alex Ander- have some intriguing influences; apparently this second full length for Blackest Ever Black was inspired by their fascination with the life and work of radical psychiatrist R.D Laing. Whether this is noticeable in the music is debatable, though there are plenty of varied moods, dreamy melodies, cascading electronics and glitchy rhythms to be found on Will To Be Well. Certainly, it's a thoroughly engaging and entertaining set, far lighter and more melodious in tone and texture than their 2013 debut. There are still droning passages of intense melancholy, of course, but these are countered by sun-bright melodies and beautiful, drawn-out sounds.

Deep, dubby and heavily textured, it's a cosmic adventure from the off, taking in blues, jazz, ambient, funk and dub in equal measure. Highlights include the lolloping late-night-drive beats and steady keys of "Kodiak", the harrowed alien plucks and scrapes of "Der Kran" and the enveloping Floydian sensation of bass and reverbed guitars of "SAE". It's great to see, then, that this sixth full-length sees him in full-on ambient mode, variously laying down picturesque, becalmed compositions, twinkling productions and hypnotic, Steve Reich-influenced grooves. There's naturally much to admire, from the pitched-down samples and curious atmosphere of "Lost In Joy" (reminiscent of Jimmy Cauty's legendary album under the Space pseudonym) and the pin-sharp melodies of "A Day In The Life", to the Namlook-ish, outer-space textures of "Marlen".

Review: Normally found weaving their reflective ambient orchestrations on Type, Norwegian duo Deaf Center have been snapped up by Sonic Pieces to offer up a haunting two-sided release that demonstrates their continued mastery of arresting instrumentation played out at a funereal pace. "Follow Still" is particularly haunting with its plaintive piano notes lingering long in the mix while the most subtle drone accompaniments drift listlessly around them. "Oblivion" has a more evocative tone that conjures up noirish scenes with carefully treated horn-esque sounds, buffing down the individual notes to create a more fluid melodic whole.

Review: Eerie electronic explorer Martin Jenkins' reputation has been growing for some time. Since making his debut with the self-released Black Mill Tape Vol 1 in 2010, Jenkins' Pye Corner Audio productions have become must-have items for those seeking evocative soundscapes, tense textures, rough synthesizer sketches and creepy analogue tones. Here, he pitches up on acclaimed experimental label Type to tell the story so far. Collecting together tracks from his first four self-released albums, Black Mil Tapes Vol 1-4 should be essential listening for anyone with even the tiniest interest in ambient. In turns both intensely unsettling and pleasingly calming (see the dreamy goodness of the softly rhythmic "Toward Light"), it's a wonderfully vivid and enjoyable collection.
