Slope
Maximum Busy Muscle
Review: All has been quiet on the release front at Hessle HQ since the outstanding WMD that was Raw Code by Pev & Kowton was issued earlier this year. Such was the magnificence of "Raw Code", Hessle Audio could feasibly not release another record this year and you'd say it was a triumphant 12 months. However, Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound clearly have other plans with the overdue return of Joe the first of two releases from Hessle in the next few months. The publicity shy producer's prior material for Hessle and Hemlock remain some of the multi-faceted bass scene's most distinctive music to date, taking influence from jazz and broken beat as much as it does from the grime and jungle being recomposed by his Hessle pals. Two tracks deep, HES025 features the emotive yet abstract house of "Slope" and "Maximum Busy Muscle", which combines ramshackle drums held together with stray horn samples and masking tape.

Surge
Remnants
Review: Ahead of the much vaunted Livity Sound compilation slated to arrive later this month, the label issue this rather tasty platter of screwed-up Bristolian techno from Pev and Asusu. Although Pev & Kowton have worked together extensively under the Livity Sound umbrella, this release marks the first time Asusu has done work outside of the solo realm. The two tracks here show two very distinct sides to the pairing, with "Remnants" typical of the measured dub-leaning approach both have taken with their recent solo material, and the significantly more surprising "Surge", which sounds like what you might get if Throbbing Gristle created the score for an 80s sci-fi movie.

Water (Reduced)
Adult (Helix Bootleg)
Review: Canadian producer Dave Psutka lays down a marker for his eagerly awaited second LP A/B Til Infinity with a second release on the Night Slugs White Label series. With the themes and concepts behind the album still something of a closely guarded secret, NS fans will no doubt see this as some degree of insight into what's to come with alternate versions of tracks from A/B Infinity placed either side. A 'reduced' take on "Water" by Psutka himself sits on the A Side, and the quite vivid Night Slugs description of the track as "a subterranean electrical storm expressed as acid-tech" rings true; a vicious acid line coils menacingly, throbbing with modulated intensity as the track ripples forward. Face down and Night Slugs transatlantic grime enthusiast Helix obliterates "Adult" in typically precision fashion - those drum rolls!

Worst Illusion
Melty Valve
500 Years
The Raven
Garlands
Review: After a splendid debut album for the label last year, Jam City returns to Night Slugs with five torrential floor tracks on the imprint's Club Constructions series. Previous instalments from the likes of Helix and Hysterics have represented the more driving side of the Night Slugs sound, and Jam City wastes no time in bringing his own take on the aesthetic to bear: "Worst Illusion" pummels half-steps and chord-stabs like there's no tomorrow; "Melty Valve" goes for a more jittering, broken schema; "500 Years" is a pseudo-deep house re-imagination in true Jam City style, whilst "The Raven" is a metallic head-banging of percussion that will no doubt set the floor on fire! Last but not least, "Garlands" takes a percussion-heavy arrangement and strips the surrounding melodies down to their very essence. Another big hit for both label and artist which comes highly recommended!

Mystic Places
Lights
Review: Gunnar 'Kassem Mosse' Wendel's Ominara label is prone to throwing the occasional curve ball; see the unannounced Siege Of Troy cassette album from Mosse that surfaced earlier this year. Welcoming the talents of Throwing Shade into the Ominara fold is still a move few would predict, but it's one that pays immense dividends as her Mystic Places 12" is a delight. The production alias of NTS Radio host Nabihah Iqbal, Throwing Shade focuses on a self styled "cosmic RnB" approach that's wholly evocative of the vividly colourful artwork that adorns this 12". The title track calls shotgun, unfurling in a manner that will appeal to followers of Nguzunguzu or Visionist yet still retaining it's own distinct charm, whilst B Side track "Lights" is the sort of production that screams set opener, with gaseous clouds of texture billowing out for some three minutes before any semblance of a beat makes an appearance. The usage and implementation of vocal samples on both tracks is quite memorable.

Review: After his Room(s) long player for Planet Mu confirmed him as an unsung hero amongst US beatsmiths, Travis Stewart follows up that gargantuan effort with this turn for Ninja Tune. It's a deeply atmospheric album that works Stewart's palpable love of jungle breaks into richly atmospheric pieces that move through sometimes mournful, sometimes dreamlike spaces that hang together like all the pieces of a creative puzzle should. At times the tone is blissful, as on "Center Your Love", while the immaculate breaks give way to strung out coldwave balladry on "U Still Lie". His sense of adventure as intact as ever, Stewart happily follows up such contemplation with the feisty tech-step precision of "Eyesdontlie", ensuring there's never a dull moment across the ten tracks.

Desto - "Cool Down The Dance"
LAS - "Liketha"
Kowton - "Dub 05"
Twwth - "Black Thigh Shakes"
Review: Bringing a relentlessly modern heat to the dance with their chosen collaborators, Signal Life make their presence felt with this release pointing to a commitment to futuristic beats loaded with bass across a range of tempos. Desto's "Cool Down The Dance" is likely to do the opposite as it brings some forthright grime strings over a simmering beat, while Las switches things up with a snaking groove that takes things slow and funky in a most engaging of ways. Kowton looks to the crawling pace and wilfully trumps it with the end-of-the-world nightmare of his "Dub 05", all horror synths and his trademark rasping claps. Twwth meanwhile brings equally measured tones as the spartan percussive study of "Black Thigh Shakes" rounding off the EP on a suitably alien level.

After Hours
What Preset
Review: New transmissions from Dave Huismans - whether under the 2562 moniker or as A Made Up Sound - are seemingly all too rare, but are always guaranteed to cause the kind of excitement usually reserved for big budget summer blockbusters, albeit without the inevitable sense of disappointment. After Hours is a welcome return then and sees Huismans further muddy the waters of definition when it comes to A Made Up Sound; both tracks are characterised by a more steady approach than we're used to from Huismans, with the title track described as offering a "brooding alternative soundtrack to that most underrated of Scorsese movies" (complete with film dialogue samples), while "What Preset" provides an abstracted combination of confrontational bass stabs and broken kick drums that seem to explode like landmines. Like the recent output of the Livity Sound trio, it's a release that explores techno's slower possibilities without compromising on impact.

Review: 2013 has been a vintage year for Stray; his on-going soul adventures with Ivy Lab, his collaborations with Frederic Robinson, his juke jungle experiments on Modulations... The man can do no wrong. And this Exit debut is certainly no exception. If anything it's his best release this year. Highlights include the booty-slapping ghetto beauty of "Bounce That", the tripped out jazz soul of the title track "Matchsticks" and the ace vocal loopery of "Prof Popper". Truly distinctive, Stray is killing it right now.

Zebra Katz - "Sex Sellz" (Teeth remix)
French Fries - "Module"
Review: Darling of the fashion world, brave adventurer of the bass world, Brooklyn's Zebra Katz continues his wholly distinctive approach to electronic music with the ridiculously slo-mo "Sex Sellz". Sleazy and woozy, Katz almost purrs his message across the endless spaces between the gutter-minded bass nodes and squiggles. Unique. For something a little more upbeat (but just as dark) flip for the hypno-trap remix from Teeth or French Fries breakbeat-techno roller "Module". A fantastically varied release; sex does sell... And so will this 12"

Stenaline Metranil Solar Flare (Bass Clef remix)
Stenaline Metranil Solar Flare (Pev remix)
Review: Although Peverelist's Punch Drunk has taken a back seat to his Livity Sound endeavours this year, the label's third release maintains its strong run of form. Seeing the label return to Reeling Skullways, Bass Clef's excellent album for them last year which was a considered highlight of 2012 for many people, the interstellar sounding album track "Stenaline Metranil Solar Flare" is the subject, remixed here by both Pev and Bass Clef himself. The latter's revision sees it taking on a weighty yet broken techno framework, with the producer's modular setup working overtime across its restless bassline and otherworldly sonic textures. Pev opts to transform it into a patient Bristol house jam in the style of his dubbed out collaboration with Hodge earlier this year.

Return From The Stars
Return From The Stars (Pev Jerky remix)
Review: Portland meets Bristol on the latest Idle Hands release as Strategy adds to his respectable discography with Return From The Stars which features a blinding remix from that man Pev. Take a glance at the labels Strategy has released on and you can't fail to be impressed with albums on Kranky and Peak Oil complemented by 12" transmissions for 100% Silk and Endless Flight. The penchant for melding hardware house music with dubbier textures on recent material is definitely in effect here with "Return From The Stars" sounding like an outsider's take on Bristol's rich soundsystem culture. Ably backing it up is Pev's self styled "Jerky" remix which strips the original down to its bare essentials; its radiophonic gurgles and elongated reverb trails sounds closer to his classic dub-influenced Punch Drunk tracks 12?s than his recent Livity Sound output.

Hips N Grids (Goldffinch remix)
Review: New bass trailblazers My Nu Leng and Majora invite similarly spirited prospects to reboot a clutch of their previous collaborations. Alias adds an industrial strength shuffle to "The Grid" without losing the original's addictive bassline hook, "Hips N Thighs" loses its trappist charms in favour of a more strutting jack riddim while Goldffinch smelt both cuts for their own tech-fused tear-up. Newness and naughtiness abounds; each cut trembles with futurist fire.

Review: Jim Coles' decision back in 2010 to implement a swerve in his sonic trajectory away from his hip-hop past as 2tall in favour of a more all-encompassing approach that touches on various strands of bass culture as Om Unit has paid off and then some. Subsequent releases on Exit, Autonomic, Civil Music, Metalheadz and his own Cosmic Bridge imprint have all shown Om Unit eminently capable of tempo shifting productions that appeal to fans of Bass music, Drum & Bass and footwork alike. The latter has been explored further while the Dream Continuum collaboration with Machinedrum on Planet Mu and his Philip D. Kick alias where the link between Chicago's juke heritage and UK Jungle was explored. All this and more is included on Threads, a debut Om Unit LP for Civil Music that deftly collates various strands (or threads) of his production career over the past fifteen years for a cohesive 15 track set that veers through of hip hop, dubstep, jungle and even house.

Light Year - "Inside" (feat Louisahhh)
Jon Convex - "Day After Day"
Sei A - "Menchy"
J Tijn - "Rough Edge"
Review: Having firmly established Convex Industries with a series of artist focused EPs and album projects from Alex Smoke, Femme En Fourrure, label boss Jon Convex signals a widening of scope with the launch of Zero Point, a new series of mixed artist releases. The debut transmission, deftly called Zero Point One, sets the standard for the series with Jimmy Edgar, J Tijn, Wraetlic, Sei A and Convex himself featured amongst the six tracks. Lead track "Move" sees Convex and Edgar join forces with typically bombastic results, as Edgar's slightly sinister voice intones "Move Your Body" over a vicious, bass heavy tech throb. "Incapacity Benefit" from Wraetlic finds Alex Smoke in stripped back mood which contrasts nicely with the building euphoria of Convex's solo cut "Day After Day". Productions from Turbo duo Sei A and J Tijn lend Zero Point One some broken grit with the latter's "Rough Edges" perhaps the outstanding contribution.

Feel (Apes 5AM Jam)
Review: The Church label continues to flourish off the back of the energy conjured from their clubnight of the same name, here expanding their reach with a new Church White sub label. Church Main man Seb Wildblood follows on from his Madtech issue earlier this year with the distinctly soulful first Church White release Feel. With a vocal running throughout that sounds distinctly like Marvin Gaye, Wildblood lays down a slow-simmering house jam laden with bongos and plaintive chords that tugs at the heart strings with the most delicate of touches. Apes meanwhile take the original "Feel" and runs with it in the finest remix tradition, using only the vocal as a reference point and instead whipping up a sharp-edged tech house beat and some mean dub techno chord growls.

Young Hearts (Darkstar remix)
Armonica (Darkstar remix)
A Day's Pay For A Day's Work (Motor City Drum Ensemble remix)
Review: With their News From Nowhere album freshly dropped for Warp, Darkstar serve up this single in support which provides a neat snapshot of where their sound is at now. There's a more overt 4/4 pulse to their work, even if the breathless indie melodic content remains intact on top of the rhythm. "Young Hearts" lolls around a dizzying loop that brings the hysteria of peak-time house music and the wallowing emotion of shoegaze into one track. "Armonica" is a murkier affair as wild layering of piano notes collides with oppressive bottom-end drones over an insistent beat, but the real gem of the record has to be "A Day's Pay For A Day's Work". With a more purposeful, subtly swung beat, there is a hint of Border Community about this cut with its fuzzy but well-formed synth lines and constant forward thrust.

Resolve
Fear
Review: Bristol-based producer Hodge has had something of a breakthrough year in 2013; as one half of house duo Outboxx alongside Matt Lambert, the pair released their debut album on Idle Hands, while a well-received solo EP for Well Rounded and the Bells collaboration with Pev on Punch Drunk have shown his more idiosyncratic solo side. Hodge's relationship with Pev's towering Bristol institution continues apace with his first full solo Punch Drunk release Resolve/Fear. Said to draw on "distinctly UK influences combining thumping broken jungle techno and modern era Bristolian dub aesthetics" the two tracks seem firmly aligned with the off-kilter 4/4 coming from Pev's Livity Sound camp of late, with "Resolve" making use of atmospheric pads alongside its rugged rhythmic flex, and "Fear" pairing churning sub bass with weighty, syncopated percussion.

Throughways
Basf Spiral
Review: London based producer Shape Worship made a notable breakthrough earlier this year with Observances, a six track EP for Exotic Pylon whose loose, melodiously complex sonic constructions evoke the pastoral modular electronics of James Holden, whilst retaining a pleasing amount of beat-driven grit. Here Shape Worship resurfaces on the vaguely mysterious Gang Of Ducks label with Throughways, a seven inch that displays a progression in approach taking on a markedly more techno orientated sound. Rusted broken rhythms feel dangerously on the point of collapse on the title track with woozy radiophonic synths careening around the edges of the channels, whilst "Basf Spiral" contains a pleasing amount of sonic grit with the occasional flourish of lopsided think breaks thrown in for good measure. File alongside the more rhythmically minded Opal Tapes output

Review: Their first original material together in many, many years, "Original Rockers" shows Digital & Spirit have maintained their fingers on the pulse with futurist attention to detail. The title track rides roughshod on a mean ghetto, almost jukey groove, all chopped up and sleazy. "Redo", meanwhile, looks back to look forward - a super-charged jungle breakbeat tear-up that growls with attitude and swaggers with cymbal-splashing fervour, it reminds us why the pair were so respected in the first place.

Now the label has commissioned Samename, Murlo, Sir Pixalot and Trends to jump on the track for this equally worthy platter! Leading the way, Samename comes with a rework primed for optimum festival exposure , whilst Murlo reins murder down on the riddim with a explosive Eski take. Visionist - "Control This"
Last Japan - "Storm Trooper"
Review: Amongst the quick salvo of quality bass music releases that Finnish label Signal Life has issued forth as a powerful statement of curatorial intent, this EP from Visionist and Last Japan serves a sharp and focused two tracker populated by two very complementary tracks. Visionist is as woozy and hyperactive as ever as snapping patterns of drum machines hop around poised sub swells and haunted whispers of melody, while Last Japan adopt a more abrasive sound palette to deliver their own version of dark, metallic broken beat. Unflinchingly rhythmic and ice-cold in nature, both cuts pack everything required to attend to the needs of the modern hybrid dancefloor.
