Ganivon
Tonik
Liberty
Review: The same week as Answer Code Request's new 12" on Ostgut Ton gets a release, the regular Berghain DJ turns up on XDB's new one for Dolly, of course run by Panorama Bar regular Steffi. ACR owns the A1 with a remix to the EP's title track, with the German seemingly plucking out his favourite loop-section of the original and pumping it full of a solid sounding techno low-end like only the Germans know how. XDB's version is long-winding, groovy and noticeably lighter in comparison, while on the B-side Detroit techno and Chicago house influences are abound, most notably in "Tonik", while "Liberty" is a stomping and very funky house classic

Future Modular
Riot In Silo 12
Serc
Review: While Luke Slater is busy as always, his Planetary Assault Systems output has slowed since the release of the all conquering Messenger LP for Ostgut Ton in 2011. For this Future Modular 12", Slater is less visceral and more arpeggiated than previous releases, harking back to a '90s-early-2000s PAS-sound, specifically the A-side's title-track. On the B-sides there's the deep, trippy and linear "Serc", but before that there's a sinister "Riot In Silo 12" that's showered in 909-hi-hats to get through first.

Breakdown
Dial 20
Pressurize
Bipolar
Review: Maybe it's because he is releasing on Modeselektor's label that US producer Truncate has chosen a different approach than usual. Whatever the explanation, Pressurize is full of surprises. The only real dance floor track on the release is "Bipolar", a stripped back, functional minimal techno groove that gets increasingly intense thanks to its grimy acid undercurrent. Elsewhere, Truncate is in more reflective mood. Both "Breakdown" and "Dial 20" are chord-heavy stepping grooves that combine the intensity of Technasia with the bassy power of Shed. Just in case there was any doubt that Pressurize marks a sideways shift for Truncate, the title track is led by dubby chords and slowed down, teased out beats.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Aubrey is a man on everyone's lips at the moment. After nearly 25 years of releasing music, the South Coast techno pioneer has just completed a busy 2013, including a remix for Juan Atkins' Metroplex Records and is pushing his own DOT Records to new heights. Here, Aubrey has followed up his earlier Ferox releases "Abstractions" and "Inner Feelings" with two super deep cuts on this techno jazz fuelled 4 -tracker. On remix duties are label boss Russ Gabriel and his RT-Transmissions partner - Germany's Hans Thalau.

Lost Myself
SOS
Review: DVS1's Hush imprint has been so quiet since the US techno producer christened it with a 12" of his own tracks back in 2011 we thought it had shut up shop, much like his solo productions, which have taken a back seat to remixes in the same timeframe. Thankfully, Lost Myself sees the producer reinvigorate the label with two brand new productions, which show just how much his lean, minimal approach has been missed. "Lost Myself" is little more than a taut arpeggiated synth line, held together with the barest of rhythms and some impressive sound design, while "SOS" takes things into more heady territory, with a swirling mass of metallic tones and ambient textures surrounding his sharpened percussive tones.

The Lands Beyond!

Black Hole
Review: In the period since Amir Alexander last graced DJ Spider's Plan B Recordings, the producer and DJ has racked up a fair glut of releases for everyone from Secretsundaze and Hype Ltd to Machining Dreams and his own Anunnaki Cartel. It's not disrespect to call Alexander one of the most prolific producers currently operating in the US house and techno scene, but every one of these releases arrives without any sense of artistic compromise on his behalf. The Lands Beyond! EP is a perfect four track snapshot of Amir Alexander deep in his element; the way the hats snap on the title track as a deep acid bass fizzes beneath or the supple, bleep laden grooves of "Mental Floss" both demonstrate how Alexander has mastered the art of functional music filled with touches that are in no way functional.

Review: Dial regular Efdemin returns with a third album of a respected career, with the autumnal theme of Decay inspired by the German producer's three-month artist residency in Kyoto, Japan. Sollmann immersed himself in the local culture while in Kyoto, attending ceremonies with monks at temples and visiting local instrument makers. This results in a ten track set that canvasses the sort of poignant, introverted house music that's characterised much of Phillip Sollmann's work as Efdemin to date. There are however a few stylistic surprises along the way - the stripped back, jacking "Transducer" or the fusion of jazzy licks and noisy bursts of percussion that makes up the title track - but overall you'd be hard pushed to think of a better label to house Decay than Dial.

Remember Fono

Noc
Review: Release number three on Mistress Recordings arrives and it's clear DVS1's curatorial hand is helping to craft an open ended music policy for the label that touches all corners of the dancefloor and beyond. Given that Marquis Hawkes adopted the Juxta Position guise to inaugurate the label, it's tempting to suggest that Doubt is the work of an established artist working under alias especially given the standard of production here. Lead track "Remember Fono" sounds like STL mixing strange vocal snippets into his defined palette, whilst "Not Before" is probably one of the weirder dub techno tools you will hear this week, with all manner of strange found sounds and vocal harmonies lurking deep beneath. B Side opener "Captain Hours" keeps you guessing as to Doubt's identity thanks to it's UK bass tropes, whilst "Noc" is a supremely grimey techno tool.

Joey Anderson - "Linguistic Command"
Review: With releases on Dekmantel, Latency, Avenue 66, Syncrophone and more, it's fair to say Joey Anderson had a watershed 2013, and the New Jersey-based producer's profile is set to rise further with a forthcoming album for the aforementioned Amsterdam label. Ahead of that, Anderson is doffing his curatorial cap with the latest release on his own Inimeg Recordings label entitled Exchange Place presents Alphabet Soup. Productions from Anderson bookend the record and in between DJ QU and Nicuri offer some strong representation for the esteemed Strength Music camp. Lead track "She Is Afraid" finds Anderson working once more with Ebony Ugo, whose treated vocals complement the bugged out house backing perfectly. "Alphabet Soul" from DJ QU could almost be a Pangaea production whilst "Navigation 8th Density" finds Nicuri combining taut techno rhythmics with an underlying cosmic sense of light. If you enjoyed Anderson's late 2013 Dekmantel dalliance you will most certainly dig final track "Linguistic Command".

Review: A new name we're all enjoying meeting is Kobosil, and after a release on Ostgut Ton sub-label Unterton, Max Kobosil appears on Marcel Dettmann's MDR, not a bad endorsement at all. He delivers six tracks, all of which are good, and starting with the gloomy broken-techno-beats of "Ein", it moves into the confused computer bleeps of "Asle", with the A-side concluding with a Giorgio Gigli-sounding "V762_Cas". On the flip we're met with the toxic and at some points middle-eastern sounds of a snare-skittery "Path", while "Oath" is a dirty techno bomb you're likely to hear played in a Barker & Baumecker set. Finally there's the industrial ambient "There" score with similar atmospherics to his aforementioned Unterton 12" that's paired with the kind of techno rhythm utilised by Answer Code Request.

Interpolations
Review: The latest addition to world of anonymous, hand-stamped techno is Gauss, who presents what is a rather impressive slab of deep club tools. "Braunschweig" is the more straightforward of the two tracks, featuring a set of drums that march steadily onwards while a simmering bassline is pounded down with noisy snares. On the flip, "Interpolations" provides some more experimental sonics, as a broken rhythm and acidic bassline flutter around each other is suitably spacious surrounds. Highly recommended to those into Skudge's brand of loose limbed analogue techno, which is high praise from us.

Perplexed (Rodhad extended mix)
Dirtro II (Robert Hood Redeemed mix)
Review: Arguably the two biggest R's in techno at the moment remix [Phase], with Rodhad revealing a more emotive side to his techno, while Robert Hood delivers the goods like only he can. Rodhad's interpretation takes away some of the original low-end heard in "Perplexed", resulting in something that's groovy, but still tough, while noticeable increasing the blue-noted tones of the track. Robert Hood's love affair with "Dirto II" continues with the Detroit legend joining in on the cold temperaments for a clinical and percussively slicing remix. With rapid fire 12"s like this, it seems trying to match Token's dominance of club techno at the moment would be a futile act.

Free & Easy
Review: Scottish techno stalwart Stephen Brown continues his long-running assault on the global techno scene with his first release for a.r.t.less, bringing forth two tracks that trade on his knack for machine soul and crisp robotic funk. "SD1" is a stripped down affair that hinges on a simple repeating melodic phrase while thin slithers of drums dart around it. "Free & Easy" is the more gregarious of the two, with some heavily swung drums bouncing around playful dashes of synth in a style that will instantly appeal to fans of Brown's take on techno. If you're in need of some high-grade outboard action then this release might be just the ticket.

Review: Head Front Panel is a new label offshoot of Tabernacle Records that deals in (actually) limited quantities of hard, harder and ever harder techno from established artists working anonymously. On issue 1, synths are out of control, beats are slamming and it's lo-fi, raw, and rough as. Across the four tracks on the sub-label's debut release there's cranking Jeff Mills-inspired techno, to funkier Detroit house, blitzing drum tracks and sketchy beat templates designed to destroy dancefloors. Bring it on.

Foggy Situation
Review: ANOTHER SLAB OF TTT HEAT! Known to the online dance community for his journalistic endeavours, Angus Finlayson crosses the critical divide with aplomb on this debut transmission under the Minor Science guise. Sitting in the uncomfortable yet intriguing crawlspace between Madteo and Actress, it's quite easy to see why Will Bankhead would be drawn to these five tracks. Opening with the brief fractured vignette "Lightfastness" which sounds like a FM dial being shunted through the sonic mists, the Minor Science sound then draws on four more rounded productions that offer compelling variety. The cooing stutter of "Silence" emits a succession of thick gaseous clouds of textural incandescence that are quite intoxicating, whilst the skeletal timbral patter of "Hapless" hides a vocal that's buried so far deep into the mix you'll keep pulling the needle back and messing with your bass EQ in order to try and decipher it. "The Beckoner" is woozy techno that manages to rein in the melodic chaos that always seems on the cusp of breaking out, whilst "Foggy Situation" is quite beautiful in it's abstract construction.

Review: Gesloten Cirkel has become one of techno's true cult figures since his emergence back in 2009 with a self-titled 12" for Viewlexx offshoot Murder Capital, exploring the strange fringe between techno and electro with intermittent releases for David Vunk's Moustache Techno and Berceuse Heroique. Supposedly from Russia, there has nonetheless been much speculation as to the producer's true identity, though his musical roots seem very much planted in the sound of The Hague. His debut album Submit X is described quite aptly as "not for the faint-hearted", featuring a host of electro and techno cuts filled with classic breakbeats, tripped out vocal samples and caustic acid lines. However, it's also an album which looks to classic minimal wave sounds for inspiration - the lean rhythm and vocoder of "Stakan" and decayed 8-bit textures of "Chatters" provide some of the album's most memorable moments, proving Gesloten Cirkel is a producer with a few tricks up his sleeve. Undoubtedly one of the albums of the year.

Review: Be it Tusk Wax, Horn Wax or Porn Wax, the collective of labels continues to develop into one you willingly place your trust in safe in the knowledge the standard of music will be optimum regardless of genre or contributor. Tusk Wax Thirteen sees the label debut of Clouded Vision co-founder Steve Cook who is perhaps the lesser celebrated producer than his Clouded Vision cohort and part time hair model Matt Walsh. However the four tracks here demonstrate perfectly Cook's capacity to craft thick, analogue house music of various shades and tempos yet all primed for the dancefloor. "Self Control" and "Still Hardcore" are the sort of languid, spacious acid cuts Weatherall would open a set with, whilst "Juno How I Feel" is wonderfully ascendant in its execution. The effervescent "Hacid" is the B Side most selectors will pull for, with a restrained acid line that complements the heavenly chords to a tee.

Review: James Ruskin has of course individually collaborated with Mark Broom, as well a forming The Fear Ratio project for Blueprint, and he's worked with Regis as O/V/R, but a solo record from the boss on his own label hasn't been heard since 2009. Throughout the Silt EP, sounds from these collaborations creep in and out of the three productions, while the title-track sounds like something that would fit right into a [Phase] EP. There's a definite Warp, albeit Lakker and The Fear Ratio sonic to the melancholic "Wisdom Of Youth", while the murky slither of "Emotional Erode" is the EP's unexpected, ambient, and rhythmic dub-leaning highlight.

Review: This Society sees Florian Kupfer return to L.I.ES. faced with the conundrum that so many rising producers have to contend with; how to follow up what was one of last year's true crossover records in the shape of Lifetrax. Such was the power of that helium voiced B Side "Feelin", Kupfer's White Label debut for Ron the Don's LIES operation has been granted two represses on the main label - the most recent a EU edition remastered by Matt Colton! If you gripped Kupfer's contribution to the Funkysouls-baiting Russian Torrent Versions label, you'll not be surprised to find the German producer trading in a more hard-edged techno sound on the title track to This Society. No warbling Minnie Mouse vocals here, instead it's a weighty, crashing number worthy of Bunker, which contrasts nicely with the more musically framed "Resistors". Best of all however is the B Side cut "Reach Another System" which can best be described as a turbo charged MCDE.

Review: In the period since the last release on Vanguard Sound!, label founder Amir Alexander has seen his stock rise considerably with releases on Secretsundaze and Finale Sessions. Quite rightly too as the Chicago-based producer seems to have narrowed onto a style that is both deft and simplistic. If you copped any of the previous Vanguard Sound! transmissions, you'll know they aren't the type of 12" to gather dust and the Stardust Kisses EP is filled with everything we love about Alexander across four tracks. The title track is as good as anything Omar S has come up with lately, whilst "Black Snow Wolf" dips into chunky electro but the real highlight is "Binary Star System" where skewed funk meets the treated vocals of Clara Stjnrna.

Review: After another impressive 2013 that saw label debuts from the likes of Paula Temple, dBridge, Alex Smoke and Tessela, as well as a debut album from Space Dimension Controller, Lakker are set to join the R&S fray with Containing A Thousand EP. Lakker will no doubt be delighted at landing a record deal with R&S as the two have been quoted on numerous occasions citing Aphex Twin, a R&S regular back in the day, as a major influence on their productions. That said, they've delivered their own individual sound to R&S, that, for the most part sounds like rusted robots rising to life out of a misty swamp, particularly the lurch of "Mausoleum" and injured sprint of "Thermohaline". There's a Stroboscopic Artefacts sound to the title track, while "Kantu" is rhythmic, tribal, and metallic. This is arguably their best release yet.

Review: Since 2012 Power Vacuum has made a name for itself by releasing unrelenting rave and acid fuelled techno. After a strong second year of releases that included contributions from Mark Broom and EDMX, as well as several releases from label founder Milo Smee, the first Power Vacuum release of 2014 introduces five new artists on a split release. Although the highlight for many will be a rare track from Objekt, the angular shock and awe techno of "Balloons", the rest of the contributions are equally great. Turbo's latest recruits Joe Farr and J.Tijn team up for the steamroller that is "Mustard Sucker" while Ukrainian hard techno producer Positive Merge delivers the relentless gabber-esque stomp of "Note", but perhaps the most eye-catching inclusion is the new An-i project from Lee Douglas that recently debuted on Minimal Wave's sister label Cititrax, with the ex-TBD man delivering the scrambled frequencies of "Convo". Review: Kenny Hanlon's Apartment label have put out some great 12"s since it's inauguration back in late 2011 - the John Heckle and Juju & Jordash remixes of TR One stand out in particular. The Dublin label's sixth release here looks to shine the light on some of the music talent currently bubbling away in the Irish city and the results are impressive. First up is a remix of the aforementioned TR One from recent Hivern singing New Jackson, who moulds the bruising techno of "Viceroy-9c" into a more breakbeat led acid cut. House duo Slowburn turn in "Riders Of The Sea" which wouldn't look out of place on a Workshop B Side whilst The Cyclist summons the spirit of The Sun God on the heavily tape-distorted "Crax". The Superior Inferior ends proceedings on a high note with "A Bit Much Confusion" which sounds vaguely like a wave cover of the Simple Minds classic "Themes For Great Cities" - this is a good thing!

The EP's title-track, "Fusion Of Thoughts", shares a similar floating arrangement to Tom Dicicco's Stockholm LTD debut, "Night Erosion", while things settle into something stripped and rhythmic in "Transform Human". "Absolute Reliance" provides some obscure, big room, 909 driven acid techno, leaving Grindvik with a final spot to remix "Fusion Of Thoughts", toning back the chords while beefing-up and tightening-up the groove, which at some points almost sounds like a reinterpretation of Ben Klock's "Sub Zero".

Originally from Hanover in Germany, Vril has been a mainstay of the Weimar label's many projects since surfacing on and subsequently the techno-minded Staub series, as well as being the one Giegling artist to venture outside the comfort zone with releases for techno outposts Delsin and Semantica. Vril has now returned to home base with a surprise debut album Torus on the Forum sub label that served up Prince of Denmark's much loved album The Body. Vril's productions combine elements of booming dub techno with murky reflections of rave with his own patented and progressive synth sound. Torus sees Vril deliver more of this, but he's also extended the remit on this album to include other elements of dance music, with what sounds like Clone-inspired (west coast) electro, Chicago house and flashes of Adam X-industrialisms.

The title track combines Mulero's trademark throb and reverb-heavy ambience with powerful drums, while "Cave" takes things in an even darker direction, with brittle percussion resonating against reverb-heavy ambience. The remixes aren't too shoddy either; Our Circula Sound boss Sigha delivers a remix of the title track with some prickly yet powerful synth blips, and Tommy Four Seven coats "Cave" with an industrial fuzz and into a broken techno nightmare which will destroy any dancefloor.
