Review: With their first team-up on Wild Oats still on heavy rotation, the Funkinevil pairing of Kyle Hall and FunkinEven return for another quartet of tracks combining some of the finest young minds of Detroit and London. Following an arpeggiated intro that sets the scene with its vocoder vignette, "Ignorant" provides a heavy-set piece of machine funk with some serious swing in its step; "In The Grid" meanwhile injects some serious Motor City soul into proceedings with a combination of sweeping pads and raw drum machine beats, leading into the enveloping analogue wash of "Outro". More fire from the Funkinevil guys - don't sleep.

Into A Circle

The Nature Of Our Hurting
Excerpt Three
Review: With Silent Servant having inaugurated the Jealous God label alongside the like minded Svreca, the second release sees another founder step up to the plate in the shape of James Ruskin. Taking the much less grander title of Jealous God 02, this 12" from the Blueprint boss will be of interest to fans of the Sandwell District Fabric mix, featuring "Into The Circle" amongst it's six tracks. It's also the first solo Ruskin release since his Sabre / Massk EP for Blueprint back in 2010, and it sees Ruskin return to a sound similar to that of his Fear Ratio collaboration with Mark Broom, whilst also incorporating shades of his more experimental productions for Stroboscopic Artefacts' Stellate series. The famed British DJ and techno producer supplies three full tracks, which sit alongside three shorter excerpts spread across the single 12-inch. The record comes accompanied by an "artefact" in the shape of a Silent Servant designed postcard, and a free mix CD from the Melbourne-based Moopie - who met and played with Silent Servant during a recent tour of Australia - which draws on a far-flung selection of USSR-made synthesis, gamelan-krautrock infusions and American psych-rock.

Corebox (James Ruskin remix)
Corebox (James Ruskin 3rd version)
Corebox (James Ruskin Event mix)
Review: If Donato Dozzy plays Bee Mask then James Ruskin plays Marcel Dettmann. The Blueprint boss turns in three remixes of Dettmann's "Corebox", originally taken from MDR04 (featuring "Lattice"), supplying two club crafted tracks and an ambient 3rd Version. Ruskin reworks the original's famous chords, adding overdrive and reverb in his first remix, while his Event mix strips them dry to sound more like a Baby Ford or Steve O'Sullivan production. Ruskin's ambient version again uses the chords as its centrepiece, but buries them in a soundscape made for a '70s horror film.

Review: Pennyroyal's fourth release sees label owner Untold call upon two of the UK's most seasoned techno producers in Ben Sims and Paul Mac. The two make their full debut as Fokus Group, who to date have the one credit to their name with a remix of Mark Ambrose's Floorplan-esque "Shooting Stars". File the four track self-titled EP under party techno, as it sees Sims and Mac match the rigid techno force of Pennyroyal's previous releases, while also incorporating the label's signature bass and rave aesthetic.

Review: After some minor delays Klockworks celebrates its tenth release by introducing Ukrainian artist Etapp Kyle to the label. It's the young producer's first vinyl offering and it's likely he'll enjoy a similar spotlight of exposure to that of DVS1 did he debuted on Ben Klock's imprint. The title track "Astra" sees melodic arpeggios bleep over a solid four-four kick drum as a 909 drum machine is used percussively as much as it is atmospherically. Kyle keeps things tonal in "Drama" adding a subtle dubby edge, while "Aurora" sounds like a chime-filled take of Ben Klock's most defining tracks "Pulse" and "Subzero". Kyle caps his homage to Berghain's most famous DJ with more sweet blips and tough-loving drums that are surrounded by a crackling ambience in "Prizma".

Fred P - "Moving Systems"
Eric Cloutier - "Adytum"
Anton Kubikov - "Jan4Bg"
Korablove - "Sea Son"
Review: Berlin based internet TV station Studio r- expand operations with the launch of an eponymously titled label that aims to further disseminate their efforts to document modern club culture. Initial plans for the label centre around a series of split releases on vinyl pairing established names with rising talents and Studio r- have pitched it just right on their debut release. The A Side features a pair of New York to Berlin transplants in the shape of Fred P and Eric Cloutier, whilst the flip looks to bubbling electronic scene in Eastern Europe housing productions from well-regarded Russian talents Anton Kubikov and Korablove. Obviously the presence of Fred P is the big draw here and his cut "Moving Systems" is a wonderfully grainy slab of dub techno, but it's matched by what follows. Cloutier for example offers up his debut production "Adytum" and you can tell his years behind the decks at NYC club The Bunker have played some part in his new direction, whilst on the flip Kubikov offers a wonderfully smudged slice of deep house in "Jan4Bg". His compatriot Korablove signals a change in tempo to round out the record with the stuttering 6/4 beatdown of "Sea Son".

TX Connect - "Ghetto 972"
Review: Following essential cuts from Jared Wilson, Marquis Hawkes, Vernon and O.D.D, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams present their first various artists release, the self-explanatory DABJ Allstars Vol 1. Two unheralded names share the billing for this one, TX Connect and CT Trax; the former delivers "TX Acid", a tuff 303 jam for sweaty basements, and "Ghetto 972", a slamming piece of house with its eye on the more raucous end of the 90s, while CT Trax presents "Redline", a driving techno belter filled with phased synths, and the standout "Jack Attack", which distils classic Dance Mania down to its most primal rhythmic elements. Probably the most ferocious missive from the Buckfast loving crew yet - essential!

Review: After the recent announcement of a forthcoming L.B Dub Corp album, Luke Slater's other alias, Planetary Assault Systems, provides its first transmission of 2013. Fans of "Bell Blocker" from PAS' stellar The Messenger album from 2011 will instantly warm to the cold chimes of "No Exit", while pink noise cushions the brooding, pitch-dark groove of "Undertow". Slater then introduces agitated mind games on the EPs inner B-side with "Nanendi", which sounds like a school of crickets trapped in a haunted cathedral of distant Gregorian chant.

Balls Of Steel
Review: Mr Beau Wanzer has already been responsible for some memorable music in 2013 as part of both Mutant Beat Dance and Streetwalker, issuing releases on Light Sounds Dark and Cititrax that rank amongst the favourites of the Juno review staff. Having previously appeared on LIES as part of MBD, Wanzer now makes his full debut with this much awaited self titled three track EP. Ever since Ron Morelli dropped it on a Benji B show earlier this year, the clamour for "Balls Of Steel" has steadily grown to boiling point and the track sounds all the more impressive running up the stylus of a 1210 than it does on shoddy iPlayer bitrate. Based around a unique vocal hook, Wanzer's basically done a Florian Kupfer and delivered unto LIES a hit track that shouldn't really be a hit track. The functional rhythmic nature of "Balls Of Steel" is replicated in the scratchy "Two Orders" whilst "Outside Auto" is a lumbering EBM number reminiscent of Wanzer's work with Traxx.

Review: ** Repress ** Prince of Denmark inaugurates the new techno offshoot FORUM, from the Weimar-based operation Giegling, which takes over from their previous techno sub-label, Staub, which ended with last year's 8-10 EP from Vril. This three disc LP has been a long time coming and it delivers the goods; each record features one full track on the A-side and two tracks on the B, which suggests Giegling cut no corners in giving Prince Of Denmark the 12" real estate his music deserves. All tracks leading up to the LPs penultimate track, the euphoric "(In The End) The Ghost Ran Out Of Memory", effortlessly move, transmute and evolve through magically minimal arrangements of dub techno, deep and streamlined house and that undecipherable Giegling sound. Prince Of Denmark's The Body is one of, if not, the, techno album of the year.

JC - "General Relativity"
JC - "Framework"
FP - "Quantum Effects"
FP - "String Theory"
Review: Commencing a new series for Fred P's Soul People imprint, Jose Cabrera and Fred himself deliver four tracks of uncharacteristically tough rhythms that suggest an exploration of more driving, DJ-focused cuts compared to the luscious soulful tones normally found on the label. Cabrera takes up the A side, kicking off with the hefty throwdown of "General Relativity", all thunderous kick, snagging hat and desolate bleep over a fearsome high-pitched tone. "Framework" is housier in its demeanour, but still packs a mean punch as it twists out a chunky chord line. Fred P's "Quantum Effects" on the flip is a perfectly scattered techno excursion, both minimal and engaging at the same time. "String Theory" is more twitchy with its dextrous layers of percussion and discordant notes claging around in the distance, a far cry from the soothing lullabies he can often be found crafting.

Review: Creme Organization and Ann Arbor-based producer D'Marc Cantu join forces for a sixth time on the excellent Alternate Frequency EP. Whilst Cantu first made his name as part of the 2AM/FM and X2 projects with fellow Nation artists Melvin Oliphant III and Tadd Mullinix, the producer has built up a worthy catalogue of solo excursions and for our money tends to be at his best when bolstered by a Creme catalogue number (see his early Creme Jak releases for references) This six track plate maintains D'Marc Cantu's excellent appearance record for DJ TLR's label and demonstrate the full diversity of his production palette. The title track is a wonderfully sci fi indebted slab of acid techno filled with his trademark muffled vocals and coarse claps. "Size And Shape" demonstrates the producer's not afraid to let his melodic impulses take the lead whilst "Straight Shooter" and "Speed Freak" are examples of Cantu at his frenetic best. Fans of the producer's mellower moments will bask in rich bed of sonics that is "Titanium Control Arms" or the tumbling beat em' down of "Tazurko".

Stefen Blomeier - "They Have No Place In Paradise"
Review: The Glasgow-based label Clan Destine Records started the Clan Destine Traxx imprint a few months ago as an outlet for dance floor-focused cuts that tap into their label's DIY musical aesthetic. The fledgling label's first release set the tone with Dungeon Acid, Torn Hawk and Tuff Sherm lining the excellent Dark Acid 12" and this second release in the series is equally good. Optimo Music's Golden Teacher are heavily involved, contributing a track in "Cedar Eels" that feels like an extension of their polyrhythmic endeavours for JD Twitch's label. In addition some of the band appears under the Tropic Of Capricorn banner with the straight up acid techno banger "Helen Gilgrist" whilst Stefen Blomeier might just steal the show with the K'ed up Daphni stylings of "They Have No Place In Paradise".

Review: Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann returns with a second album for Ostgut in the shape of the simply titled Dettmann II. Unlike Hollywood, this musical sequel to his debut self titled LP of three years packs just as hefty a punch and arrives with Marcel at his busiest. In addition to overseeing his MDR imprint and putting out a steady stream of EPs for Ostgut Ton, he's contributed two singles to Modeselektor's 50 Weapons as well as mixing an entry into Music Man's Conducted mix series. Hot on the heels of an entry into Bleep's techno-centric Green Series, Dettmann II arrives and follows a similar formula to his LP length debut. Expect a mixture of ambient soundscapes and minimalist experimental cuts going up against more uncompromising dancefloor material, and there's a high profile cast of supporting names involved too; Emika provides vocals on "Seduction" while multi-monikered Rene Pawlowitz and Levon Vincent have assisted in the production of the tracks "Aim" and "Outback".

Review: Stuart Li has been releasing music as Basic Soul Unit since 2003 across labels such as Dolly, Mathematics, Creme, Nonplus, and Still Music, but has only just put his toes into the murky waters of label ownership with the Lab.our imprint. The first release comes from the producer himself; although Li has flirted with both deep house and techno in the past, the three tracks on the label's first release seem to be more aligned with the latter, with the mid-tempo piano tones of "Innershell" soon giving way to a pulsing analogue bass, and the fast, electro-inspired rhythms and irregular chords of "Frack" and heaving mechanical acid thump of "Earwerm" providing some of the producer's weightiest, most club-focused material to date.

Review: Excellent self titled album of material from the man Charles Manier on the Nation label which has finally surfaced after word of its release first appeared on distribution lists last year. You will probably know the name Charles Manier from the excellent Bang Bang Lover 12" issued by Ghostly back in 2002 and this album draws from an archive of material recorded around the same period at Ballard and Ridgewood-Cantullinix Studios in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Heavily influenced by the primitive sonics of Liaisons Dangereuses and the short lived CH BB project that preceded them, this ten track set swings viciously between grotty EBM, experimental wave sounds and proto techno movements with the C Side hogging "Wasps" a real centrepiece. Essential sonics for those that travel the path less ordinary.

Regnie
Review: As his techno repertoire grows ever stronger, Trevino makes another appearance on Martyn's 3024 label with signs that his approach to 4/4 is maturing and diversifying. The trademark snarl still sits underneath the constructions, but "Gone" is notably fluttering in its delicate synth shimmers and restrained groove. "Twelve" is a more feisty number that neatly picks up the thread from previous releases, as powerful bass swells bring in the harmony that the higher synth stabs crave. "Regnie" heads into a more esoteric kind of Detroit mentality, all searching bleeps in optimistic tones over a snaking rhythm that calls to mind the most refined of techno approaches.

Review: Launched last year, the Lost Archives series from Indigo Aera is limited through and through; it's scheduled to run for just four editions and only 377 copies of each record are pressed. Squiring unreleased material from the personal archives of Jonas Kopp and Stephen Brown ensures the quality standards set by the two previous editions are retained for this penultimate plate! "The Flow" finds Stephen Brown in fine fettle; plaintive synths traverse the murky sonic mists as the Edinburgh veteran reduces and adds to a jerking tribalistic beat. On the flip, "Telergia" sees Jonas Kopp evoking the minimalist approach of Robert Hood.

SeeLow - "Fatal Chord"
Review: Introduced to the world via the following amusingly tongue in cheek Hardwax write up, "Well equalized, effectively waxed DJ tool killer Techno," this two track The Final Experiment XX1 12" is of course the latest transmission from Shed HQ. A man known to adopt numerous aliases, Mr Rene Pawlowitz has been absent from the want lists for a hot minute so it's about time we got some DJ tools to tussle over. Pressed up on his new label The Final Experiment, both tracks here bear the hallmarks of a Pawlowitz production; "Seq Interrupt" is a brutish production where muscular drama filled drums grind against aching synth lines whilst "Fatal Chord" takes a more stripped back approach. No less a DJ weapon, Pawlowitz utilises just the key components with the darkest moments of Berghain in mind.

Review: Time To Express usher in the final instalment in their trilogy of Reciever remix 12"s themed around Pete Van Hoesen's excellent Perceiver LP, with Marcel Fengler and Neel stepping up and nonchalantly maintaining the standards set by Messrs Dozzy, SCB, Sigha and Phase. Adopting a reduced principle , Berghain resident has remixed "Inspection In Solitude" dropping swarming, buzzing riffs over a sinewy groove that gets right under your skin. Review: Until now, FunkinEven's Apron imprint has been used solely as an outlet for the Eglo artist's own productions/edits, chief amongst them the beautifully wrapped Chips & Sweets 12" from last year. Sometimes talent is too good to pass up and FunkinEven's opened the Apron stable to welcome the unheralded production chops of 19 year old Miami based producer Greg Beato. This three track release presents Beato as the latest US producer to join the Stateside ranks of grimy hardware house exponents and it makes complete sense that he's also been lined up for a release on LIES later this year. Lead cut "Respect The 78" sees crunchy kicks rain down on heavily filtered arpeggios and thunderous synths, whilst "Let Em Know" rips right into a powerful locked groove that occasionally feels like it's tripping over itself. Final track "3" heads down the abstract Motor City techno route and feels as vital as anything to have come from the likes of Naples, Huerco S or Delroy Edwards in recent months.

Review: Charles Cohen has a rich heritage as a composer of improvised electronics and free jazz dating back to the early '70s, working solo and as part of The Ghostwriters with Jeff Cain, and more recently in the Color Is Luxury duo with Metasplice and _moonraker member kenneth_lay. His music is performed almost entirely with the rare vintage Buchla Music Easel synthesizer, of which only 25 were made in the early '70s (with just a few left in working condition). He is now the subject of an extensive reissue project from analogue synth enthusiast Rabih Beaini's Morphine label, which kicks off its exploration of his work with the second "Redose" release from the label; Morphosis provides two reworks of Cohen's Dance Of The Spiritcatchers, with both the beatless and rhythmic versions capturing some expectedly alien moods.

Manhattan Project (Silent Servant remix)
Review: Mary Velo is a Berlin-based producer who has proven hard work gets you somewhere. After a slew of releases for the Gynoid techno factory and digital labels Labyrinth and Fluxus, she's landed a release on Frozen Border that includes a remix from Silent Servant. The Manhattan Project is made for unapologetic club play. The title track is a metronome-groove of kick and hi-hat that's slowly infiltrated by Mike Parker-inspired pangs of synth, while the concrete-percussive thwacks embedded into the big room lumber of "Syntax" are reminiscent of Klock or Dettmann circa 2009. On the flip is Velo's purposely engineered and thumping B-track, "Head Light", while Silent Servant's remix of "The Manhattan Project" blends the production techniques of Tropic Of Cancer with the techno stylings similar to his releases on Santiago Salazar's label Historia y Violencia.

"Fachwerk 30" is furthermore notable for the fact they've worked with vocalist Sophia, but fear not Fachwerk fans this is no ill advised attempt to take on Defected as the singer's contribution is woven into the very fabric of a trademark concrete funker. Although this record struggles to capture the pure mania of a Frak live performance, which involves green jackets, tinfoil masks and a table full of vintage hardware, it is, like their other Kontra white labels, filled with skewed analogue techno. The Old Villagers EP marks the debut release from the mysterious Gerstaffelen, an apparent newcomer whose mastery of production belies this and fits right in on the Amsterdam label's remit. The four tracks here have apparently been road-tested by Aroy Dee for months and the label will surely be nudging Gerstaffelen for more! From the sumptuous Wolfers at mid tempo pace of the title track proceedings veer deeper into more frenzied, twisted territory as the run out groove of Side B draws closer.
