When All Is Said & Done
Castling Becomes Inevitable
Review: Brace yourselves for another descent into the unknown with the seventh release on Ancient Methods self titled label. Resurfacing for the first time since that deadly Ugandan Methods drop with Regis last year, the Seventh Seal arrives on sleek clear green vinyl and finds the now solo operated Ancient Methods project ease up on the ear serrating sonics of those early releases that garnered such critical praise. These four tracks still pack some notable industrial weight however; lead cut "Nights & Bishops" has a certain concrete funk to it, whilst "Kings & Pawns" is a standout, very much schooled in the same class of alien textures as Mike Parker.

Transmission 5 (instrumental) (7:00)
Review: With the 303-heavy sounds of their "Paris Dub 1" still ringing in our ears from last summer, the anonymous Paranoid London outfit return with the fifth release on their eponymous imprint, aptly named Transmission 5. Once again hooking up with vocalist Mutado Pintado, the track sees a sinister spoken word vocal laid over a subtle acid line, complete with raw drum machine manoeuvres, while the flip sees a straight instrumental. Stripped back, but deadly as the last - don't sleep on this one...

Drop Dead
Review: Operating at a speed of releases that shouldn't be possible with your label boss is in the midst of a 3 month European tour, the LIES juggernaut spits out its latest slab of essential, grizzled floor weaponry in the shape of this White Owl EP from Delroy Edwards. This three track release maintains the high BPM trajectory of Edwards previous LIES transmissions, with the A Side title track a rugged, heads down DJ tool that could feasibly have been lifted from the unreleased archives of Dance Mania. The same no nonsense approach is retained on the flip, though "The Fast Lane" is markedly less aggressive, relying on a central warbling motif to capture your attention; "Drop Dead" winds it back to the stripped back, gnarled kick drum flex. Strictly for the DJs.

Waterfall (Lucy remix)
Waterfall (Birth)
Shrouds
Review: The enigmatic Rrose returns with the monolithic sounds of Waterfall Variations, the first Eaux transmission of 2013. Since debuting on the Sandwell District label in 2011 with the Primary Evidence EP, Rrose's Herculean brand of techno has offered a new take on the big room style. The Waterfall Variations EP sees Rrose return to "Waterfall", a track that featured on the 2011 Sandwell District classic Merchant Of Salt, offering an early, previously unreleased variation entitled "Waterfall (Birth)", as well as inviting Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy to remix the original with brooding results. There's every chance "Waterfall (Birth)" will fill many of Europe's festival speakers this summer, while Lucy's remix is more suited to the club, toning down the flamboyance of Rrose's electrifying synths. "Shrouds" sees Rrose merge both the menace of his Sandwell District releases with gnashing spells of harsh electronic manipulations.

Review: Paradise sees minimal Detroit techno icon Robert Hood exploring the Floorplan concept in more expansive style. The Floorplan project was founded in the mid '90s, as Hood looked to merge his minimalist approach with elements of house, disco, funk and gospel. Explored intermittently over a six year period, Hood put it to one side and it was a reissue of the Floorplan debut by Rush Hour that inspired him to revisit the project in 2011, scoring a bonafide gem in "We Magnify His Name". Explored in album format here, Paradise is a mixture of all new material and tracks culled from these recent M Plant 12" releases, lending the album a sense of continuity. It's all the more impressive when you consider the fact Hood's been releasing one highly conceptual album a year since 2009.

Review: ** REPRESS CREW ** Wild Oats don dada Kyle Hall steps up with a long awaited debut album under the KMFH moniker - expect rough, raw machine funk Detroit style across two slabs of wax on The Boat Party. Emerging at the age of 17 on FXHE, Hall has long been referred to as a wunderkind but this LP should really establish him as a fully fledged player in the pantheon of current Motor City producers. From the off, this eight track set feels like Hall recorded straight to tape, with his noted talent for incessant drum machine work and glistening melodics somehow making their presence felt amongst the thick, mulchy, saturated finish that clogs up the channels. Seemingly not occupied with any sort of conceptual ambitions beyond the economic statements of the cover art and title, Hall is left to work through his full range of devastating dancefloor manoeuvres with a few surprises along the way - the high octane ghetto tech "Finnapop" will surprise many. "Detroit Hustles Harder" remember!

Review: Although Michigan is well inland from the North Atlantic Ocean, it doesn't mean Detroit can't make techno for the high seas or uncharted waters. Terrence Dixon's Lost At Sea 12" for the Surface label founded by Nick Dunton and the late Richard Polson sees four tracks of "Untitled" Detroit techno traverse through a sonic field of Joey Anderson and DJ Qu house drums, while saw-wavey Drexciyan qualities and Jeff Mills techno loops also circulate the EP. A deep and heady 12" of U-boat rhythmics for the techno underground.

Attitude
Review: Although Joey Anderson's profile has been on the rise since appearances on DJ Qu's Strength Music and his own Inimeg Recordings, it was his appearance on Levon Vincent's Fabric 63 that seemed to herald his arrival, with the sublime "Earth Calls" showcasing his deceptively complex take on deep house to the world. This new EP on Latency is a similarly trippy journey down his wormhole; "Press Play" combines disembodied vocals and improvised keys with his trademark looping background textures, slowly opening themselves out into something warm and enveloping. "Mind Set" takes a similar approach, but with an even sparser choice of tools, its detuned vocals mingling with tribal rhythms and a subtle mix of pads and organs; "Attitude" finishes with a rattling combination of raw percussive textures while climaxes with a warm but complex embrace of chords. This guy is one of the most interesting deep house producers in the game right now - don't sleep!

Seashore (Sprinkles Ambient Ballroom)
Exhalation (DJ Sprinkles Deep Breath mix)
Review: After compiling one of this year's best mix CDs in Where Dancefloors Stand Still, Terre Thaemlitz' second compilation for Mule Musiq this year will be a retrospective remix package of his own work entitled Queerification And Ruins. The first of the 12" releases features DJ Sprinkles' Ambient Ballroom mix of Oh, Yoko - a folky-ambient project by Rie Mitsutake and Will Long - which first appeared as a B-side to the 2012 single "Seashore". Sprinkles adds a soft-thumping kick drum and tittering percussion to the breathy original, giving the tracks washy synths and wispy tones a delicate structure, while also embedding life inspiring vocals into mix. On the B-side is Sprinkles' Deep Breath Mix of "Exhalation", which was first released on a remix package for Thaemlitz' own Comatonse label in 2006. A little heavier on the drums, claps and percussion than the A-side, its combination of belly thumping tablas, unusual oriental vocals and dream-like synths make it one for the Buddha Bar compilation

Delirium Tremens (Robert Hood remix)
Delirium Tremens (Benjamin Damage remix)
Review: There is no doubt that "Tremens" is a worthy addition to Modeselektor's 50-strong collection of 'weapons'. The UK producer's own 'long version' is a peak-time slammer; based on oversized, grainy kicks, it features hissing percussion and analogue riffs howling past, which act as a prelude for the mammoth chord sequences that veer into the kind of eerie sounds that emanate from Detroit. By contrast, the Robert Hood version sounds relatively sedate. The Detroit producer takes musical chords, adds in some robotic vocals and underpins his arrangement with heavy rolling drums that are the antithesis of the visceral minimalism he is associated with.

Review: Lustrations finds Mike Parker releasing a long overdue debut album filled with his distinctive whirring insectoid synths and overpowering basslines and represents a welcome return to Prologue for the first time since 2011. Undoubtedly one of the more interesting producers in contemporary techno, Parker's quiet obsession with analogue experimentation, fascination with ring modulators and love for the atonal and dissonant works equally well in the album format as it does on those distinctive looking Geophone 12"s he has put out over the past few years. A theme of clarity and hypnotism is apparent when listening through all twelve variations of "Lustration" and together they combine for another superb LP release from Prologue.

Transversal (Sleeparchive remix)
Review: Continuing his foray into the pitiless world of pitch-black techno, Oscar Mulero brings the pressure on this latest EP for Developer's Modularz imprint, stepping up to the label's remit for forward-thinking industrial styles. "Rotula" falls slow and heavy, somehow achieving grace even as the unforgiving bottom end thuds out and the hats shudder with nervous energy. Truncate brings a remix that plies a more compacted trade in cyclical techno, less booming but more pointed than the original. On the flip, Mulero's "Transversal" does the damage with a scant list of ingredients, largely dominated by a stuttering square wave bass stab bringing the doom to great effect, while Sleeparchive reacts with a version that brings everything you could want from a Sleeparchive cut; a bleak soundscape devoid of human warmth with a central bleep the only source of light.

Review: Speaking at length for Resident Advisor's Exchange series of podcasts recently, Panorama Bar resident and Dolly label head Steffi was in typically straight talking mood and her apparent lack of interest in engaging in the promotional game for releases on Dolly speaks volumes as to how she approaches the label; it's an outlet for her to release the music from artists she likes with the minimum of fanfare. Of course it helps to sell records when Dolly releases are of a consistently high standard, as this Various Artists 12" resolutely is with 3 cuts from her Panorama Bar mix CD present and correct! Despite the illustrious presence of Klakson co-founder Dexter, Third Side and Steffi, it's the playful classicist US deep house of "Reality" from John Barera and Will Martin that truly stands out!

Break Something That Breaks You
No Home No Flag
Dont Shit On Your Own Doorstep
Review: Grey Series 04 comes from the farthest corner of Eastern Europe courtesy of Ukrainian techno artist Stanislav Tolkachev, whose music explores the darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state. Retroactive seams run through his sound from the grainy analogue qualities of his Detroit-facing sound, through to the classic stills that emboss his discography. Depth of light sees Tolkachev plot more intoxicating, caustic dream sequences, translating fitful night terrors into a diverse and multifunctional EP. Beginning with the woozy title track we confront fears ("Like a cat's shadow") and anxieties ("Break something that breaks you") on the feverish A-side, before flipping over for reserved reprieve ("No home no flag") and acid-washed revenge ("Don't shit on your own doorstep").

Periphery
Review: With numerous vinyl, CD and cassette releases over the past 20 years, Orphx are true techno veterans; Boundary Conditions marks their third release for Adam X's Sonic Groove label, and sees them continue to blur the lines between techno, industrial and noise music with stellar results. "Outcast" begins with a tunnelling bass pulse, slowly giving way to savagely distorted synth blasts, gradually building to a frenzy of broken noise. "Vanishing Point" is similarly beautiful in its abrasiveness, coating its simple beat with distorted drum rolls and delicate tones, while "Periphery" takes a gentler approach letting its textures and rhythms unfold and breathe in more cavernous surroundings. Once again the duo prove why they are one of techno's most enduring outfits.

Review: Despite a production career dating back six years, this EP on Semantica is only the second full vinyl release for Donor. This doesn't mean New York-based Greg Schappert is no self-accomplished producer; Silent Servant and Forward Strategy Group have remixed Donor, whilst he's shared split release space with Xhin and Go Hiyama. H9 sees Donor tone down his usual boomy production ethic of his preceding releases, suggesting his palette is changing from something sonically rich and heavy, to something a bit lighter; merlot in character perhaps. Donor's debut on Svreca's Semantica label is essentially loopy, and '90s inspired industrial techno, but it's different in that it's not, well.. too '90s.

Review: Silent Servant and Svreca engage as SS/S for the debut release on Jealous God, a new multi-purpose project from the collective minds of Karl O' Connor, James Ruskin and Juan Mendez himself. Intended for the "mutants of our age", Jealous God could possibly fill the void left by the end of Sandwell District, arriving as yet another offshoot of the spiralling Downwards Empire with ambitions significantly higher than the average hand stamped white label techno operation. Described by the label as an 'issue' as opposed to simple release, the Sicario de Dios 12? presents a suite of four "Siglio's" from Silent Servant and Svreca accompanied by a bespoke art-zine. Musically, both sides of the 12" see Mendez and Svreca pair a short beatless production with a more expansive, dead eyed techno production that will appeal to Semantica fans.

Footprints (7:31)
Mars Garden (4:15)
Review: The second of three Borderland album samplers features the tracks "Footprints" and "Mars Garden", songs that middle the forthcoming album. "Footprints" delivers exactly what you would expect from a dubby German audiophile and Detroit techno mastermind; rugged, yet finely tuned drums and bleeps that delicately sway in a downtempo ambience of engineered synthesis. On a minimal and trippy tip, "Mars Garden" aligns to a rigid four-four groove, with a funky - and subtly overdriven - bass line, that gives the track a vibrant sign of life, in a pleasantly isolated and jazz-kissed arrangement.

Clean Neckline
Code #3
Review: Formed in 2008, Al Matthews and Patrick Walker's Forward Strategy Group project have become a central element of Ali Wells' Perc Trax label. Following their Labour Division LP, The New Formal EP represents the pair's first material since that album, and builds on their Perc Trax output by combining the emotive content of album with the harder hitting industrial sounds of their previous EPs. The title track sees Forward Strategy Group apply processional organ sounds and tremolo-effected keys on top of compounded beats, while the swung and broken-beat rhythms of "Clean Neckline" strike with bullish force amidst a seething flurry of distortion and overdrive. The New Formal also retains lineage with the pair's Perc Trax debut, with B-Side cut "Code#3" a continuation of the sounds of "Code#1" and "Code#2" from the Combat Code 12?, a track vividly described as brandishing "a snare that could floor a toddler from 50 paces".

Review: Blacknecks 001 is yet another anonymous hand-stamped techno 12" in a market becoming increasingly saturated with them, but on the strength of this release it could well be that the Blacknecks operation sticks out amongst the like of MPIA3 and AnD. "Track 1" comes on like Daft Punk's "Rollin' and Scratchin" on steroids, coupling a solid 4/4 pulse with filthy, distorted bass, while "Track 2" offers some similarly distorted kicks and mechanical robo sounds. "Track 3" throws disembodied, bitcrushed voices into the mix, leaving "Track 4" to finish in a flurry of phased kicks and squealing analogue noise.

Blue World Below
Review: Dutch producer Samuel Van Dijk continues his aviation themed dissections of subaqueous electro with Flight Control, a superlative debut for the ever excellent Tabernacle imprint. Those who indulged in International Airlines, Van Dijk's debut album for Lunar Disko last year will find much to admire across the four tracks here; lead track "Terminal Code" sets the tone, snapping with a degree of rhythmic viciousness that's straight out of the Gerald Donald school of thought. The title track adopts a more optimistic, star gazing approach with the loose, blurry chords allowed to ripple delicately over the stripped back drums. Face down, "Depressurization" quite brilliantly descends into murky nearsilence at one point whilst "Blue World Below" is perhaps the best example of Van Dijk's capacity for razor sharp percussion and deep set dubbiness.

Above The Cherry Moon (Vakula remix)
Auset
Review: Having firmly established one conceptual series in the shape of Acid Test, Los Angeles label Absurd Recordings have signalled their intentions for further expansion with the launch of Avenue 66 - an offshoot dedicated to "left of centre house and techno". The sense of curation and concept that went into Acid Test lends a certain degree of audience investment with Avenue 66 and who better to launch the endeavour than Joey Anderson. There's a sense that 2013 is the year where Anderson ascends from rising talent of the East Coast Deep House scene to fully fledged star and Above The Cherry Moon highlights his diversity. "Above The Cherry Moon" is the epitome of abstraction, with a jagged analogue lead pulsing with agitation over a thick bass drum whilst Anderson himself and vocalist Ebony Ugo add a further sense of unease with their foreboding utterances. An accompanying remix from Vakula flushes the track with a glistening sense of calm and will prove a set starter for many, along with supplementary B Side cut Auset.
