Review: Tresor chalk up a whopping 260 releases with Sleeparchive's A Man Dies In The Street Part 1. Roger Semsroth has always constructed dense techno from minimal means: dusty white noise, a handful of bleeps, solid drums and simple sequences melded into new forms by heavy doses of repetition and austere atmospherics created from the waste products of cycling parts. Spooky bleeps only make up the even half of the EP, with "2" dinging endlessly like a quantised but malfunctioning train crossing, while "4" sees Semsroth inject more life into his short wrung tonal bursts. "1" and "3" however are the remit of ringing metrical's, with Sleeparchive seemingly paying homage to Regis' mid '90s style of hard and grubby techno, similar to "He/1" and "He/2".

Spherical Coordinates - "SCXFG 21"
Mike Parker - "Currents"
Reeko - "Blueshift"
Review: There's plenty of interest on this three track Charged Particles 12" from the Tsunami Records label. Firstly it brandishes yet more highly charged output from the Spherical Coordinates project of label boss Christian Wunsch and Spanish techno icon Oscar Mulero, a collaboration that debuted in auspicious circumstances with a recent EP on Polegroup. Much like that four tracker, "SCXFG 21" sees the pair lock into a deep, throbbing techno groove that perfectly encapsulates their stated intention to create music "heavily inspired by space and futurism, focusing on liquid textures, harmonic sequences and classic drum machine sounds, yet preserving the danceable feeling." In addition, Geophone and Prologue artist Mike Parker ensures the deepness remains on the flip with the shuddering textural journey below that is "Currents" whilst Reeko opts for a groaning industrial approach on the excellent "Blueshift".

Heart & Soul
Sprk Tha Dust
Review: Repress alert! Whilst we were busy polishing off the Quality Street over Christmas, Ron Morelli decided to launch another LIES offshot with the LIES XMAS series - Delroy Edwards helms the inaugural release. Those who indulged in Edwards LIES debut 4 Club Use Only will see the word "curveball" flash before their eyes when listening to A Side track "Heart & Soul" a production which demonstrates the newcomer is fully capable of a more subtle approach. It's a simple but compelling production where brisk claps are underpinned by a chiming melodic motif and a calming, titular vocal hook that sounds naggingly familiar. It's backed with "Sprk The Dust" a wholly more aggressive affair which submerges a chopped up Lil Wayne deep beneath a relentless 150bpm jack hammering beat. Check YouTube for a rather good fan video for the latter btw!

Fierce Tension
Fierce Tension (Shifted remix)
Comprehend
Collision
Review: Paul Boex's Dynamic Reflection imprint is continually growing in calibre with each release. Time & Perception Part 1 is the labels 16th title and fifth for Abstract Division, a collab between Boex and Dave Miller. The EP opens with "Fierce Tension", which sees the duo bury their siren-sounding synths into a condensed wall of sinister force, while Shifted's booming and reverb heavy remix annihilates much of the originals musicality, it unrelentingly bores a war path of linear techno championed by the likes of DVS1. On the flip, "Comprehend" is like being caught in a wind storm of flying bolts, rust and ripped roofing, while the EPs ambient track "Collision" squeaks and gurgles like a alien trapped at the bottom cave in a Ridley Scott film.

Guilty Pleasures
Karma
Review: Keith Worthy dons a new alias called Lamar for the Guilty Pleasures EP on his own Aesthetic Audio label. A grubby bassline and sprocket wheelin' beats create a smudgy and down-beat groove in "Guilty Pleasures", lightened by flutey keys and a synth line that sounds like a distant buzzing swarm of hornets. "Karma" is as melodious as it it confusing. Locked to a four-four framework, a cathedral organ repetitiously builds in size, surrounded by fluttering and spacey electronics - further defining the producers take on the futuristic Detroit and K-Worthy deep house sound.

Drehimpuls
Charger
Eigenzeit
Isolant
Review: Having signalled his return to pounding techno on a rowdy Echochord 12" recently, Mike Dehnert ensures that rattling sensation in our eardrums remains with Placide, a four fingered assault on your senses through home stable Fachwerk. Apparently inspired by some spam email entitled "Give It To Me Raw!" Dehnert elected to record opening track "Drehimpuls" live in Paris for extra rawness, with suitable results; the track literally barrels through a thick wall of corrugated sonics. The remaining three tracks sound slightly cleaner in comparison, though the sheer sound design at play ensures the unpredictable serrated synth of "Charger" or booming warehouse groove of "Eigenzeit" prove just as memorable. Final track "Isolant" is undeniably funky too, trapping some lost female vocal deep beneath the mangled kicks and smacked out whistles.

Sway
Review: Amir Alexander's Vanguard Sound! operation has established itself as a firm favourite at the Juno office since it was launched last year with the Idiot Savant Masterpiece 12" from Alexander himself a late highlight of 2012. The first Vanguard Sound! Release this year sees label mainstay Chris Mitchell maintain his stylistic course through the deeper echelons of house and techno previously plotted on releases for Plan B and Proper Trax through four productions that pair tough, rough percussive arrangements with throbbing, hypnosis inducing basslines and melodies. Tracks such as "Snakes Heat & Concrete" or "Sway" are a world away from the snapback cap pack of shallow house currently diluting the market - if you want some real deepness Vanguard Sound! delivers.

Jack 2
Fucklebucks
Hamerhoofd
Review: J Tijn is quickly becoming a recognised name after a strong contribution to a three-part techno series by Belgium label Other Heights, as well as his role in Turbo's New Jack Techno sampler, which saw his "The Anti Mixdown" cut into an EP with other up-and-comers Locked Groove, Gingy (minus Bordello) and Milano. A further example of J Tijn's rising repute is demonstrated on this Jack 2 EP which inaugurates the new Pennyroyal label from Hemlock boss Untold. The title track lurches through a rough mess of sludge and scraping hi-hats that sound like something from Terminator 2, while "Fucklebucks" heads toward ravey-Blawan territory. The snigger and growl of "Hamerhoofd" share similarities to Regis' early '90s material, suggesting like J Tijn, like Regis then, is only in his techno-adolescence, with plenty more to come.

Estrangement Of The Past (live edit)
Estrangement Of The Past (Surgeon mix)
Review: The Surface label, synonymous with hard edged British techno, gives Nick Dunton and the late Richard Polson's The 65D Mavericks project a special (re)release of sorts. It's called Estrangement Of The Past which features a live edit (no details as to when and where is was recorded) and another remix by Surgeon. The original is breakbeat and synth screaming techno at its finest, as industrial thwacks of percussion and smatterings of acid litter the piece, while Surgeon remoulds the kick drum of the original and raises the rest of the mix from a hazy and analogue dredged deep. Seminal British techno.

Fred P - "Project 05"
Juju & Jordash - "A Stab In The Dark"
Big Strick - "Heyday"
Review: One of Panorama Bar's most recognisable residents, Steffi, celebrates her introduction to Ostgut Ton's Panorama Bar mix series with the album's sampler. First Up is Fred P with his deep and melodious "Project 05", while Juju & Jordash's "A Stab In The Dark" features more of the live techno-poppy-electronica heard on their Techno Primitivism album. Detroit heavy hitter Big Strick turns in a dust covered "Heyday", which features a cluster of drippy bleeps and heartfelt leads that sound like they were made by analogue poltergeists in a waterlogged, but sun drenched studio.

To Convince For The Untruth (Lucy remix)
Disinformation (Developer remix)
Intentionally False (Shifted remix)
Review: Oscar Mulero revisits last year's Black Propaganda with some help from some of contemporary techno's biggest names on this essential remix 12". "To Convince For The Untruth" sees Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy take the original's cavernous surroundings and sharpen them up with bitcrushed hi-hats and subtly a rumbling noise floor, while Developer's take on "Disinformation" straightens out the original's breakbeat acid tendencies by soaking its furious synth lines in reverb and hooking everything together with a rolling 4/4 kick. Finally, Shifted's take on "Intentionally False" keeps the measured pace of the original but transplants its thick, bulging frame for a threadbare structure littered it with subtle detail.

Venger
Image Ctrl
Review: Since 2011, MRSK has done well to garner the spotlight of attention he has, which essentially stems back to his glorious remix of Anthony "Shake" Shakir's "Travellers". The Swedish producer has been strong on the remix front since 2011, but the Venger EP will be Martin Skogehall's third ever solo release and second for Skudge Presents. The title track features a squidgy, but free flowing groove that with the help of rolling 909 toms and washy snares, makes way for a enchanted synth progression. Subtle rave elements meet bass, techno and house music in "Image Ctrl", with MRSK somehow including whistles in his production (again) with out sounding cheesy. Something he and Ed Davenport seem to have mastered.

Voices From The Lake - "Reptilicus"
Mike Parker - "Mnajdra" (Shifted remix)
Stanislav Tolkachev - "Heartbeat"
Review: In what could be the biggest techno release of 2013 so far, Geophone delivers a rarely seen VA package, with Mike Parker only appearing in remixed form. Donato Dozzy and Neel's revered Voices From The Lake collaboration supply their first release outside of Prologue with some throbbing brain pulses in "Reptilicus" - much harder sounding than their album material. Shifted's remix to Parker's "Mnajdra" is outrageously Berghain-centric, as mechanically mutated insect buzzes hammer away to scraping and suctioned percussion. Ukrainian artist Stanislav Tolkachev, who is making a name for himself since his track "Building Peaks" on Developer's Modularz settles into Geophone's 19th release with his usual frenetic pace, this time employing thudding drums and melancholic atmospheres likened to Aphex Twin's more emotional material. This version comes with special artwork from Mr Geophone Mike Parker himself.

Fear Eats The Soul
Next
Untitled
Review: San Francisco residing UK visual artist come techno producer Oliver Vereker returns to LIES with the final part of two devastating releases for Ron Morelli's towering label. For those not in the know, Vereker was already an established part of the L.I.E.S. family, having co-produced videos for last year's Mutant Beat Dance and Two Dogs In A House releases along with Juan Bocca. Both reflected the grimy L.I.E.S. sound with a grainy, colour-saturated VHS aesthetic which was encapsulated in the throbbing, disintegrating quality of Rosite, Vereker's debut LIES 12" from last month. And it very much continues here with the title track from Fear Eats The Soul scraping away at your senses like The Black Dog at their best. Face down, Vereker goes for the grubby, basement techno approach on "Next" which appears to use a sample of a distant chainsaw as the basis of the bass line whilst "Untitled" is droning, rattling acid techno at its best.

Review: ** REPRESS CREW ** Wild Oats don dada Kyle Hall steps up with a long awaited debut album under the KMFH moniker - expect rough, raw machine funk Detroit style across two slabs of wax on The Boat Party. Emerging at the age of 17 on FXHE, Hall has long been referred to as a wunderkind but this LP should really establish him as a fully fledged player in the pantheon of current Motor City producers. From the off, this eight track set feels like Hall recorded straight to tape, with his noted talent for incessant drum machine work and glistening melodics somehow making their presence felt amongst the thick, mulchy, saturated finish that clogs up the channels. Seemingly not occupied with any sort of conceptual ambitions beyond the economic statements of the cover art and title, Hall is left to work through his full range of devastating dancefloor manoeuvres with a few surprises along the way - the high octane ghetto tech "Finnapop" will surprise many. "Detroit Hustles Harder" remember!

A Blink Of An Eye
Review: Shout outs to Gerd Janson and Running Back for doing the decent thing and issuing the surprise Syclops LP from the master Maurice Fulton on double vinyl. Having seemingly abandoned his Syclops pseudonym following the critical and commercial success of the superb 2008 full-length, I've Got My Eye On You, Fulton elected to resurrect it for a surprise sophomore album. Predictably, A Blink of An Eye is a bit good. Picking up where the previous album left off, it delivers a warped fusion of titanium-plated electronics, leftfield acid jack, freestyle jazz flourishes and intergalactic mutant disco. Formidably twisted but hugely enjoyable, it gleefully charges off in many different directions, mixing shirts-off anthems (see the brilliant "Sarah's E with Extra P"), with curious percussion jams (the afro-centric "Jump Bugs") and curiously blissful, Boof-ish excursions ("5 In"). Stellar stuff.

Somewhere
Review: Following Psyk's excellent label debut for Mote Evolver in the shape of Distane, the producer returns for another EP of robust, yet minimalistic techno. The title track is as tripped back as they come, utilising simply a stomping kick drum and metallic bell tones to create a devastating techno tool; "Surface" is similarly sparse, but trades earth shaking qualities for an idiosyncratic combination of irregular claps which are thrown into the mix alongside slender synth stabs. "Intern" meanwhile takes things on a funkier tip, where distant snare rolls and marimba-like tones combine to create a deceptively simple techno tool; it's a stark contrast to "Somewhere" which is significantly brighter in its approach, accenting Psyk's fierce rhythms and dub chords with a colourful cluster of house-inspired stabs.

Lowtec - "The Rhythm" (remix 2)
Review: Those that missed out on Nonplus's blink-and-you'll-miss-it Think & Change boxset now have the chance to grip each of the 12"s in the package individually - though sadly without the bespoke box. The first sees a rare outing for Boddika & Joy O outside of the Sunklo habitat, with "&Fate" delivering a jittery piece of slick tech-house whose surprisingly soulful vocal samples is pulled down with dense beats and pulsing analogue textures. On the flip, Workshop regular Lowtec provides the heads down deep techno business of "The Rhythm (remix 2)", a slow moving combination of sonorous square wave bass and glistening chord textures.

Untitled A1 (Ben Klock remix)
Untitled A2 (Edwin Oosterwal remix)
Untitled A1 (Ben Klock bonus dub)
Review: As a self-confessed Terrence Dixon obsessive, this writer found it difficult to accept the concept of his work being remixed at all. That said, Ben Klock does a fine job of imbuing the Detroit producer's music with a sense of dance floor abandon. Klock's main version sees the Berlin producer lay down an insistent, stripped back groove, its shrieking stabs hitting the listener like the icy jolt of a winter morning. Klock's dub is more rolling and filtered, but contains a punch thanks to its metallic percussive licks. Edwin Oosterwal also delivers a high quality take on "Minimalism", with a slamming rhythm and dry hats providing the basis for a dramatic, sweeping chord sequence.

Call Of The Wild
New Surroundings
The Outermaze
Review: Although he's been working with Bookworms under the Confused House banner and Ron Morelli on the Two Dogs In A House Project, The Outermaze is the first full solo transmission we've seen from Jason Letkiewicz's Steve Summers moniker for almost year, and it marks something of a rebirth for the producer. Gone is the Chicago-inspired jack, to be replaced with a bold take on hardware techno, filled with sinister synth textures swirling in the void; "Call of the Wild" pairs its touch rhythms with a belching bass synth that sounds like a grizzly bear, while "New Surroundings" utilises the kind of sharp, ragged acid-inspired synths that nevertheless sound strangely melodic. "The Outermaze" is the real killer however, with ragged percussion and discordant keys bristling over a pulsating bassline. We're fans of pretty much anything L.I.E.S. at Juno HQ, but this record is something quite special indeed.

Attitude
Review: Although Joey Anderson's profile has been on the rise since appearances on DJ Qu's Strength Music and his own Inimeg Recordings, it was his appearance on Levon Vincent's Fabric 63 that seemed to herald his arrival, with the sublime "Earth Calls" showcasing his deceptively complex take on deep house to the world. This new EP on Latency is a similarly trippy journey down his wormhole; "Press Play" combines disembodied vocals and improvised keys with his trademark looping background textures, slowly opening themselves out into something warm and enveloping. "Mind Set" takes a similar approach, but with an even sparser choice of tools, its detuned vocals mingling with tribal rhythms and a subtle mix of pads and organs; "Attitude" finishes with a rattling combination of raw percussive textures while climaxes with a warm but complex embrace of chords. This guy is one of the most interesting deep house producers in the game right now - don't sleep!
