Only Wanted To Be (unreleased acid version)
Rabbit Trax I (The Next Generation)
Review: Chicago staple Still Music is back in action with this highly sought after gem of obscure acid house from the original era of the sound. Tragically James 'Jack Rabbit' Martin passed away in 1990 which left his career just a few releases deep, and the Acid mix of "Only Wanted To Be", which takes up the A side of this reissue, remains one of his most distinctive tracks. It's a slow and fevered cut rich in the lo-fi nastiness of the time, with distorted vocals that add to the overall freakiness of the jam. "Rabbit Trax I (The Next Generation)" is a tougher cut that ramps up the squelch to a great, paranoid end result.

Head Down Arms Buddha Position
Tears Can't Bring You Near
You Gave Me Life Again
Review: In many ways, the TANSTFAAFL imprint run by DJ October and John Osborn is the perfect home for Joey Anderson. The New Jersey native's take on techno and house - sparse and mechanical, but heavily influenced by both classic Detroit futurism and the twisted pulse of Chicago acid - is a perfect match with the electronic ethos of both TANSTFAAFL. bosses There's naturally much to admire about Heads Down Buddha Position, from the title track's surging drums, ragging acid and wild electronics, to the alien bass, melancholic chords and soft focus drums of the deeper "Tears Can't Bring You Near". Arguably best of all, though, are the fluttering drums, funeral chords and sci-fi electronics of closer "You Gave Me Life Again".

ACIDz x2
Satin
Review: A sixth release on Jurg Haller's excellent Forbidden Planet sees the focus swerve back to lesser known talents after that coup in a 12" by Mono Junk, with Berlin-based newcomer Annanan at the helm. There's a paucity of information on the artist from the label (intentional or otherwise) which ensures the focus remains squarely on the music, and those inquisitive soles not put off by a lack of yarn spinning will be rewarded with three sublime cuts. Lead track "124" booms and bristles in all the right places, with an intoxicating dub techno pulse at its core which resonates brightly with sonic intensity as the A side run out groove draws ever closer. On the B side, "ACIDz x2" fluctuates superbly between grizzled acid and saturated deepness, whilst the appropriately named "Satin" reins in the madness for a supple, widescreen journey into techno loaded with atmosphere.

All Of A Sudden
Review: Terrence Dixon's announcement of plans to retire from techno with immediate effect earlier this year have typically gone without any further explanation, though it's been heartening to see his final round of projects surface over the course of 2014. Having already committed a killer Population One 12" to Metroplex, Dixon delivers another fitting parting shot in this LP for Rush Hour, who took their name from his classic Pop One production "Rush Hour". Theater Of A Confused Mind is a powerful statement from Dixon, expanding on the sci-fi themes of previous Population One material and posing several cryptic questions. Dixon's own voice introduces the album on "Out Of Control" and as matters progress those trademark queasy lines of melody begin to take control - "Inner City Circus" being a stand out of this set.

Ethyl & Flori - "The Last Ninja"
Flori - "Fornjot"
Review: Ethyl seems to have dedicated his production career to date to collaborations; every one of his eight singles has been penned with a studio partner. Here, he once again teams up with regular sidekick Flori for a first outing on Fear of Flying. As usual, there's much to admire across the two tracks. "The Last Ninja" is particularly enjoyable, sounding like a long lost Detroit techno classic after a night on anti-depressants - all rolling rhythms, fizzing cymbals, fluid riffs and sun-bright melodies. "Fornjot" flips the script slightly but keeps the positivity factor high, thanks in no small part to some loose-but-loopy synth refrains and an unfussy, kick-heavy groove.

Kinda Kickin' (Efdemin remix)
Review: There is a simple yet cunning concept to the Petite sub-division of Gent label Curle that continues to pay dividends; forgotten gems from house and techno past get fully relicensed and reissued backed with a contemporary remix. The 2010 reissue of Walt J's "Reborn" was a particular highlight thanks to the "DJ Qu's Journey Towards Birth" reinterpretation Curle secured. The first Petite release in 3 years draws for the one DJ Boom production Matthew Herbert and Charles Webster completed back in 1999, the ultra deep "Kinda Kickin", and pairs it up with a remix from Efdemin. It's a good match with Phillip Solman retaining that distinctive vocal hook whilst implementing the kind of textural detail which made this year's Efdemin LP Decay so memorable.

Review: The ever-prolific Truncate is at it once again on his home turf, demonstrating something of a pinnacle for the US approach to stripped and raw techno. "Track 1" slaps out the handclaps with gusto, but the synths that bubble in the background keep a certain dubwise calm to proceedings even with all the energy fed into the drums. "Track 2" takes a more dense approach, working in more intense flurries of percussion and keeping the synth elements finely chiselled and nervous, before "Track 3" brings a more playful side to the fore thanks to a hooky melody that will appeal to all Robert Hood fans out there.

Save Us
Review: Earlier this year Minimal Wave offshoot provided one of this year's most visceral dancefloor weapons in Kino-I, the debut from Doug Lee's new An-I project. Taking inspiration from techno, jack, industrial and punk, An-I successfully drew a line under some of the Berlin-based artist's previous disco-flavoured endeavours. And then some! If you like the Kino-I 12" you will love the new triplet of An-I productions housed on this appropriately titled Gutz 12". The title track alone should come with a health warning; such is the furious onslaught of machine funk it contains, whilst the unnerving "Rut" is the most schizophrenic production you will hear this year. Best of all id closing track "Save Us" sounds like a cross between in Aeternam Vale and Silent Servant. Pressed on a rather thick and dashing slab of magenta orange vinyl!

Review: After the meteoric impact of his self-released singles and spots on Hessle Audio, Power Vacuum and Bleep, the electronic music world has been waiting patiently for TJ Hertz to step up and share a wider vista of his sound world. This debut LP for PAN does not disappoint, channelling the electronica quality of his most crushing club music and giving it a chance to roam that bit more freely. The beats still hit hard on the likes of "Ratchet", but that's not their only purpose. With sound design and general production fireworks at the forefront, whether you can dance to this or not is unimportant; what matters is how completely edge-of-your-seat thrilling it is to listen to, from every space age sweep to each grubby reverb impulse. We always knew he had it in him, and Objekt has more than delivered on that promise.

Review: Man like Delano Smith has been turning out fulsome house grooves for time. The US legend has a direct link to the origins of the genre but always brings his own hypnotic, loopy style. This special warehouse find comes on Sushitech and finds a host of modern mainstays adding their own spin to Smith's originals. Dettmann goes first with a heavy, grainy, basement techno roller, Makam layers in icy dub frequencies and weighty bottom ends, while dub techno don Steve O'Sullivan traps you in a state of suspense on his version of 'Behind The Shadows.' The last two interpretations offer further late night dub explorations of the highest order.

I Don't Know How To Say
Review: As one of the more distinctive minimal house operators in these times, Ion Ludwig makes for a snug fit over at Trelik towers, and with this three tracker it's not hard to see why his records are so highly prized these days. "46 LJ + Felix Ballad" is a refined groover with a fine balance between gritty low end chunk and gossamer top-end, working subtle hits of bass and illustrious string sweeps into the mix to great effect. "EM Carpet" meanwhile darts out into more obscure territory, keeping the beats to a minimum and focusing on warm and fuzzy synth tones cycling

Under His Own Name But Also As Sir
Review: The Hinge Finger label overseen by Joy Orbison and TTT boss Will Bankhead returns with Cologne producer Barnt at the helm for the excellent two track His Name 12". Jobbing house and techno selectors will be eminently familiar with the output of Daniel Ansorge as Barnt, whose music has resulted in some fine 12"s for the likes of Comeme, Mule Musiq and his own Magazine label. Still, not the most obvious of candidates for a Hinge Finger release, but much the same was said about both Madteo and Mix Mup at the time of their announcements on the label. Both "Chappell" and "Under His Own Name But Also As Sir" fit the Barnt mould perfectly, taking the functionalism of techno's rhythmic backbone and playfully toying around with it resulting in some truly memorable sonics. The B Side track in particular is up there with Ansorge's Comeme "Tunsten".

Geezin

Lubiana
Review: The Zenker Brothers and their Ilian Tape venture get stronger by the minute, and here Marco flies solo with this latest EP, sounding in utterly rude health with it. "Geezin" is a distinctive opener, ditching standard 4/4 propulsion in favour of an airy drum machine arrangement infected with the slightest flurries of hardcore breaks and offset by wistful synth patterns. It's a curious combination that works magnificently, but for those wanting something a little more direct "Splifer" is on hand to deliver a more classically Zenker techno mantra. "Darai" brings the swing back in fine style, throwing down a chunky stomp to match the sizzling hats, and then "Lubiana" wrecks the surroundings with its magnificent pummel of low end percussion and gritty production values.

Review: Should you desire techno that sounds like it's sampled an ongoing laser battle in some sci-fi B movie, head straight for the opening track on this eighth edition of the Head Front Panel series from Tabernacle. The track is overflowing with laser like samples, expertly EQed into some form of forward momentum over tumbling kicks and malfunctioning modular synthetics. Following this, "Track 2" will appeal to anyone that is an advocate of the recent Population One material whilst the full on thrust of the third track may sound familiar to those that lock into the Hessle Rinse show. To close matters there is a touch of the Sun God about the final track, though the execution is done with a dash more clarity than you get from Jamal Moss.

Review: Having struggled to find his niche during the early part of his career, things started looking up for Randomer when he popped up on Numbers back in 2011 with the bombastic blends of acid house and techno that made up his impressive Real Talk EP. Since then, he's impressively flitted between techno and bass music, and here delivers an all-out techno assault for Clone's occasional Basement Series. There's a real no-nonsese feel to the relentless kick-drums and cut-up vocal samples of "Stupid Things I Do", which comes in "New School" and "Old School" mix formats (the latter including some looser techno breakbeats, and thus being our pick). The 12" also includes two formidable percussion workouts, which deliver driving drums and booming basslines.

Review: The minimal manner in which Ilian Tape issue their material makes it hard to decipher their exact intentions for the ITX series but it has thrown up some great music so far. Inaugurated last year with some archival material from Dario Zenker, the ITX series has seen Kowton remix Jonas Kopp in ambient mode and ushered in the debut of Italian producer Schiahri. This fourth ITX issue retains the focus on emergent talent with a quite excellent five track 12" from the superbly named Skee Mask called Serum. Described simply as a producer of "Off-road swingin' herbal jams" by Ilian Tape, whoever Skee Mask is they deserve this debut with all five cuts the sort of tripped out techno that will work on any self respecting dancefloor.

Pev & Kowton - "End Point" (Stenny & Andrea remix)
Review: And so the Livity Sound Remixes 12" Programme comes to a close, ending on a high note with two storming revisions by Tessela and Ilian Tape duo Stenny & Andrea. There have been plenty of highlights in the series so far (which is due to be collated on a forthcoming CD release) with Dresvn and A Made Up Sound efforts particular favourites here at Juno HQ, but this final edition may prove to be the most memorable. Tessela's remix of Pev's "Aztec Chant" commences in relatively understated fashion before quite literally exploding with dancefloor menace in a manner that should come with a health warning. Stenny & Andrea take a less thunderous approach with their refix of Pev & Kowton's "End Point" with the results an intoxicating blend of rolling drums and softer euphoric rave synths.

This time it's Sebastien Michel aka UVB who churns out the goods for the imprint, and after already two EP's for Mord, he's basically become a regular. "Mixtion" is a jittery techno bomb filled with minimal melodies, wheras "Second Life" is almost orchestral thanks to its Population One-stylled sounds. On the flipside, "Anxiety is another slice of oddball noise futurism, and "Supertronic" is the militant bomb for total floor pulverisation. Gnarly as hell and shouldn't be missed.

Curious
Review: According to their label, Fjaak live and sleep in their studio, but whatever about their methodology, it is clear that they are doing something right. The title track is a monstrous affair, based on a gargantuan stepping rhythm and tough breeze block beats as the trio shoot out Landstrumm-esque grating noise. In stark contrast is "The Wind". Deeper and groovier, it centres on breezy chords but retains dance floor clout thanks to the shards of hissing percussion. "Curious" sees Fjaak back to the same kind of territory as "Attack"; the only difference is that this time, the groove is straighter, but the grainy drums are just as relentlessly unforgiving.

Review: Should you want some evidence of Romania's ever growing status within the techno community look no further than this debut release from Lisiere Collectif on Mike Grant's long running Moods & Grooves label. Formed of childhood friends Andu Simion, Dan Gheorghe and Bogdan Ardeleanu, Lisiere Collectif hail from the Ploiesti area of Romania and their stated inspiration for Detroit's house music heritage (as well as Berlin techno) makes them a smart fit for Moods & Grooves. There's a sense of refinement to the trio's productions that belies their lack of experience with the sweeping moods of "E 1208" and the moving Motor City chords of "A 0519" both excellent.

Issued by Aroy Dee's MOS Recordings, the ten track Noir will not sound like any sort of immediate departure from the weighty brand of hardware driven house and techno we've come to associate with Release. As usual the finer nuances and intricacies of this album will reveal themselves over repeat listens, and it's time you'll appreciate spending with Noir as Release really showcases a variety of emotions between the commencement of "Lost Cities" and the climax of closer "Sierra".
