She Can Dance
Low Control
The Smoking Hat
Low Control (Fudge Fingas mix)
Review: Yet another unknown name lines the third release from Dixon Avenue Basement Jams; and just like Marquis Hawkes before him, the unheralded VernoN ensures the Glasgow label's run of deep seated heat continues unfettered. The four track She Can Dance dovetails nicely with the aforementioned Hawkes 12", locking onto a deeper approach to the jacking sound across three tracks. The title track is the undoubted highlight here, whilst the distinct Oompa Loompas on the 303 vibe of "The Smoking Hat" had a real marmite effect on the Juno office. Kudos to DABJ for reaching out to Edinburgh label Firecracker and borrowing the undeniable talents of Fudge Fingas for a 808 heavy remix of "Low Control". Clear blue wax too!

You Could Do Your Memories
Wobble
Review: German house abstractionist Isolee makes a welcome return, surfacing on Pampa with his first new material since dropping his album Well Spent Youth on Koze's label back in 2011. Creative batteries recharged, Isolee is in familiar form on the three track Allowance 12"; the title track adopts his trademark bare bone approach with soothing lines of melodic intoxicants gently pulsing with intent over the soft edged house groove. This hypnotic opener hogs the A Side, leaving the chiming minimalist rhythmics of "You Could Do Your Memories" to duel for your attentions with the far too playful "Wobble".

Bounce
Red Line
Bounce (Ben Sims remix)
Review: Phoenix G surface in style in 2013 with the appropriately titled Frenetic EP from label boss Mr G that brandishes a rather potent remix from Ben Sims. There's an inherently old school tone to "Bounce" with the looping vocal hook imploring you to do as the title says over a stylish arrangement of firm, deep kick drums and lengthy, echo laden chords. In contrast "Red Line" locks onto a murked out techno groove that ripples with percussive intensity, which goes some way to preparing you for the onslaught of floor wrecking excellence that is Ben Sim's remix of "Bounce" with the UK techno veteran squeezing all the life out of those chords.

Underwater (1)
Underwater (2)
Review: **REPRESS** Enjoying something of a renaissance with releases on Real Tone and now Apollonia, DJ Gregory is in fine form for such a veteran of the French house music scene. Wisely tapping up his Point G alias for this release on the new label from Shonky, Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom, Gregory demonstrates exactly what years of service to house music can do for your mastery of the genre. With a steadfast and perfectly balanced beat as a backdrop, a strangely LFO'd Rhodes-like instrument wails out a lead melody, winding up in a bizarre mixture between a rock solid track and a freak-out moment, sustained for the whole tune. Both sides of "Underwater" explore this off-beat way of defining the track, creating a record to begging be hammered across a staggering range of spinners.

Heart & Soul
Sprk Tha Dust
Review: Repress alert! Whilst we were busy polishing off the Quality Street over Christmas, Ron Morelli decided to launch another LIES offshot with the LIES XMAS series - Delroy Edwards helms the inaugural release. Those who indulged in Edwards LIES debut 4 Club Use Only will see the word "curveball" flash before their eyes when listening to A Side track "Heart & Soul" a production which demonstrates the newcomer is fully capable of a more subtle approach. It's a simple but compelling production where brisk claps are underpinned by a chiming melodic motif and a calming, titular vocal hook that sounds naggingly familiar. It's backed with "Sprk The Dust" a wholly more aggressive affair which submerges a chopped up Lil Wayne deep beneath a relentless 150bpm jack hammering beat. Check YouTube for a rather good fan video for the latter btw!

Precox
Two Kids Set Off
Review: The final vinyl volume of tracks from Ricardo's Dependent & Happy LP arrives and like the previous three releases, demand will surely outstrip supply. Adhering to the adage "let's save the best till last" Perlon cull our favourite two tracks from the album here in "Precox" and "Two Kids Set Off", the former's bassline takes on a cat purring quality as Villalobos locks into a stripped back groove that seems to dip into infinity before taking a pleasant deviation towards mid point obscurity. On the flip, the taut double bass strings and strange televisual sampling present the Chilean at his most willfully adventurous. Already prey to the Discogs vultures - don't sleep on these!

Here On Earth
Girl With Better Clothes
Review: "Open the door, step into the light" whispers the sexual deviant vocal on Crooked Man's opening body mover "Here on Earth", the title track from the Steel City hero's latest EP. After a clicky kick and soul clapped intro, distorted synths build in time, slowly gathering momentum in a manner similar to the animalistic grunt of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer". A lone electronic surge opens "Girl With Better Clothes", slowly falling victim to subtle delays. In among a cocktail effect of chatting voices, a Nina Kraviz sounding narrative then enters, talking of a new found jealousy. Pair this with additional synth action, grooving drums and a killer chorus line; it's the perfect house party jam.

The Land Of Uncertainty
Review: Let's Play House duo Jacques Renault and Nik Mercer expand operations with the launch of Goodnight Moon, a lunar themed offshoot dedicated to more techno leaning output from a cast of unknowns and aliases. Almost helms the inaugural release and in a curious fusion, the lead track "Sandy" throbs on a menacing bass rub, while the upper reaching elements have a friendly tech house flavour to them full of light Detroit chords and vocal snippets. "Polyphony" has more surprises, laden with a predilection for trance in the brazen synthy breakdown, before "Bop" sets things straight with a smoother kind of deep dancefloor jam. "The Land Of Uncertainty" serves up more of the same, letting the rhythmic chords lead the way while a crooning vocal drifts over the top.

Ohrwert - "Realm"
ESHU - "Lanisn"
Crystal Maze - "Cow Needs A Bell"
Orgue Electronique - "Halcyon"
Review: For the Dub techno curious, Dutch imprint Field Recordings makes a perfect starting point for discovering fresh and forward thinking ambient and dub techno. As per usual Field 09 is a various artist sampler, featuring cuts from Crystal Maze and Creme Organization's Orgue Electronique, as well as four piece collective ESHU and Dutch dub techno purveyor Ohrwert's second submissions to the label. After an ambient and credit less intro, Ohrwert opens the EP with a wispy and dreamlike stroll through wavey textures, whereas ESHU employs Burial sounding beats and spacious atmospherics. Crystal Maze's "Cow Needs A Bell" shrouds itself in a electro eeriness only to be lightened by Orgue Electronique's synth heavy "Halcyon".

Review: Gerd Janson's Running Back open their 2013 account with a label debut from evergreen producer Oliver Ho under his Raudive alias. Ho's garnered something of a chameleonic reputation over his 15 year recording history, demonstrating little interest in focusing on one sound or genre. Most recently seen fronting the spiky three piece band The Eyes In The Heat, Ho returns to the Raudive name that scored a great History Clock 12" for the four track Traffic EP. Fitting in snugly on Running Back, expect muscular EBM and house workouts with the detuned pianos and manipulated vocals of the title track likely to garner considerable attention.

Dystopian Life (Related mix)
Review: Storming in with his first EP of the year, Samuel L Session throws down four rock solid cuts to shake the rafters on his own Klap Klap imprint. Offering up various version of Dystopian Life, the vibe throughout is one of pumping tech house with a dub techno thread running through it. Taking form in various intensities ranging from "Steel" to "Raw", the fusion of cavernous chords with pumped drums and a solitary female vocal slice are all catering to the peak time hours in sizable rooms. Session knows how to execute such dynamics with grace and impact, and this EP is a shining example of that.

She Sleeps (2000Black remix - instrumental)
She Sleeps (Martyn remix)
She Sleeps (2000Black remix - acapella)
Review: Drew Lustman has always been lumped in with the post dubstep contingent, but in truth his real influence lied in the broken stylings of West London that predated the "Great Dubstep Fracture" and was pioneered by the likes of Bugz In The Attic and 4Hero. This second remix 12" for the FaltyDL hookup with Ed Friendly Fires allows Lustman to indulge his love of that bruk style as 4Hero's Dego goes deep under his 2000Black alias. In his hands "She Sleeps" gets transformed into a wondrously bubbling analogue funker, not sounding dissimilar to the kind of soulful futurism Gifted & Blessed is noted for. Check the Martyn remix too, which retains only the line "I know that it's evil" from McFarlane's vocals; a neat trick that infers the sonic intent that the Dutchman crafts around it.

Ingi visions - "Tribe" (Julian Alexander & Samuel Deep)
3521
Review:  Slap Funk collective member Samuel Deep debuts on his own imprint with an EP bristling with crisp, punchy grooves. The Native Tribe EP opens with "Rwzdeep", a track whose kick drums come straight out of the Head High school of dance, while "Red" bristles with clanking drums and junglist overtones soldered to a techno template. The B-Side sees two more excursions into the territory from whence Mr Deep draws his name, with "Tribe" again adopting the sub bass drones and lacerating snares associated with classic D&B, whereas "3521" ploughs deep in an unforgiving acid techno wormhole. Comes housed in a nice cardboard sleeve with free sticker for you to plaster on your 1210 cover!

Pieces (Panorama mix)
Review: Following their summer hit "Need In Me", Defected duo Flashmob return with something completely different in the form of two contrasting versions of "Pieces". While its predecessor was a slick piece of big room house with diva vocal qualities, "Pieces (Garage mix)" provides a 303 infused acid tech-house stomper combined with Kerri Chandler with a sultry spoken word vocal from Laila Walker. The "Panorama mix" meanwhile goes all out with the acid and brings back the spirit of '88 in its dark, club ready mood and twisting bassline crescendo.

Overcome (9:00)
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

I Only Move For U
Renegade Of A New Age
Review: [Standard album edition sans 10"] It's rare that electronic music artists push themselves to the same degree as Danny Wolfers. The Dutch artist is one of the most prolific contemporary artists, working under an often bewildering array of guises, but this latest release sees him go deeper than before. In part, this is due to Wolfers taking more time on the production process because he wanted to make his tracks as DJ-friendly as possible, but it is also due to the fact that he has matured as a producer. The Paranormal Soul is his most refined work to date, and there is an absence of the raw edges that characterised classic Legowelt releases like Klaus Kinski or Tower of the Gypsies. Yet despite this, Wolfers' music has not lost any of the touches and flourishes that make him so distinctive. "Renegade of a New Age" and "Elements of Houz Music" have those melodic, part-mysterious, part-cheesy synth lines that Wolfers pretty much owns, and "Voice of Triumph" and "I Only Move for You" see him revert to classic acid, with visceral jacking offset by warm, 303-soaked basslines. But the most significant measure of Wolfers's development lies in the fact that he has created his own interpretation of the early 90s techno sound that originally inspired him. "Rave Till Dawn" starts with "Red 2"-style chord stabs, but instead of bombast the track gets progressively more subtle thanks to fragile break beats and mellow pads. "Sketches From Another Century", with its dreamy sweeps and building chords sounds like classic Carl Craig, but just when the listener thought Wolfer was intent on making Detroit techno tribute track, those unmistakable melody lines and warbling bass kick in, the very manifestation of the Dutchman's musical soul.

The Track I've Been Playing That People Keep Asking About And That Joy Used In His RA Mix And Daphni Played On Boiler Room
Review: We live in post modern times, so post modern in fact that Joy Orbison's wonderfully acerbically titled "Big Room Tech House DJ Tool - Tip!" has been trumped before it's even released. And it would be Four Tet responsible for such a manoeuvre, as the producer swiftly follows up his unannounced free album with THAT track. What track you say? "The Track I've Been Playing That People Keep Asking About And That Joy Used In His RA Mix And Daphni Played On Boiler Room". Depending on how you consume music at the moment, you'll either immediately know what's on this one sided 12" or be slightly flummoxed by such a long title. For the uninitiated, this track's beauty is in its raw simplicity, commencing with sampled African chants of unknown origin which gradually get consumed by a bumping house beat.
