Taste (Paul Wollford Special Request remix)
Review: Having been welcomed into the Phantasy Sound fold earlier this summer with the excellent Need Electric EP, Daniel Avery's musical tastes are further represented with this one sided white label brandishing a rather excellent, knackered pirate radio remix of "Taste" from Paul Woolford under his recently established Special Request alias. Supposedly the first of several such releases (Photonz are also due to be involved) Woolford brilliantly messes with Avery's programming here, transforming one of the oddest tracks made for dancefloor purposes into a constantly spiralling array of busted up, recycled drum breaks. It's all expertly edited by Woolford and the merest hint of the original's slightly unnerving guttural analogue thrust remains intact. A quite superb DJ tool that sets the standards for who the label looks to next!

Lost & Found Jam
Review: Highly respected in his homeland, Tiago's reputation for killer expansive DJ sets built off the back of a weekly residency at Lisbon night spot Club Lux has slowly been complemented by a deft production touch that has graced respected labels like DFA, ESP Institute and Internasjonal to name but three. Commonly lumped in with the overpopulated waters of nu-disco, his productions outrank the average edit in the quality stakes and he throws a pleasantly in your face curveball on this debut for DJ Kaos' Jolly Jams imprint. "Soul Jam" is a truly explosive floor burning techno track that really has only one intention and doesn't attempt to be subtle about it - file alongside the recent Tuff City Kids EP on Unterton and I:Cube's "Transpiration" as box keeping bomb drops. Alongside this, Tiago maintains the same style of driving rhythmic programming on "Motorjam" but adds more melodic elements into the fray, while "Lost & Found Jam" slips down the tempo scale for dub laden slo mo disco finish. Great twelve!

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's third full-length (unless you count his Fabric mix and Re: ECM project with Max Loderbauer) entitled Dependent & Happy had been eagerly anticipated since its announcement early this year, and on its vinyl release finds its 14 tracks split up across 5x12" singles. The results are as sublime as you would expect from the master of minimal; "Tu Actitud" opens with its half-spoken vocals and jaunty electric bass, "Timemorf" continues with its minimal Chilean rhythms, while "Grumax" is the undisputed highlight - a combination of tense, sprung bass and discordant strings arranged in the way only Villalobos can.

Suckerfish (Cristi Cons remix)
Tiny Dribblings
Review: Romania may not have a great pedigree for producing underground techno stars, but the Eastern European country has at least one outpost of shuffling groovery: All Inn. This EP from G Verrina and G Ventura (most likely one and the same person) delivers four distinctly different tackes on techno. There's the Steve Hillage-ish guitars and glitchy beats of "Suckerfish", the Crooked Man-goes-smiley vibes of the subdued "Fugs", and the industrial weird-out that is "Dribblings". The package is completed by a solid Cristi Cons remix of "Suckerfish" that adds a little more oomph to the bottom end whilst stripping back the dreamy guitars.

Review: The South American New Wave revolution pioneered by Matias Aguayo's Comeme label continues apace, this time with an album from Mexican producer Daniel Maloso that is, fittingly, deeply rooted in new wave and EBM. While many of Maloso's contemporaries make music that sits somewhere between new wave and nu-disco, he's nailed his colours firmly to the new wave pop mast. The production is sparse and relatively steely, with forays into tougher EBM territory (see "Steady Rolling (All My Life)" and the excellent "Body Music) and funk-infused electronic disco-pop (superb opener "Shera"). While it's well produced, there's a DIY wonkiness that recalls the early days of '80s synth-pop.

Ferenc
Review: The second of two EPs collecting Ricardo Villalobos's third album Dependent & Happy saw the producer go further in with the tunnelling grooves, with six tracks that take an explicitly darker turn than the first EP. "Zuipox" consists of micro bass and skewed vocal echoes, while "Kehaus" takes things in as ravey a direction as the producer goes with its insistent bass stab and rolling percussion and "Die Schwarze Massai" takes a more syncopated approach with it's complex rhythm and dreamy chords. "Put Your Lips" takes an insistent vocal snippet and welds a solid 4/4 groove to it with very little else. "Samma" however is the real killer, a melancholic combination of spring loaded percussion and chords warped out of shape.

The Gurner (Justin Martin vs Pillowtalk)
Review: Having made his debut on Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird way back in 2005, multi-talented San Fran electro-bass producer Justin Martin makes his full-length debut with this excellent LP. Luckily for fans of last year's excellent, juke-influenced collaboration with Ardalan, "Lezgo", there's a VIP mix included here that makes for a bigger, more building rerub, while Martin also does a great job covering Goldie's seminal "Kemistry" - adding some real venom and bite in the process. Look out for the deep and twisting "Ruff Stuff" and the syrupy "Night Calling" too.

Back Up Queen
Back Up Queen (Oliver $ remix)
Back Up Queen (808 Fake remix)
Review: For a relative newcomer, Nathan Barato has slotted right into the Rekids vibe with his first appearance on the label. "Back Up Queen" is defined by a brilliantly sarcastic vocal performance that sends up the diva culture that may or may not have its sights set on the dance music world. A rude bassline and solid tech-house bump do just the right amount of work in the background while a simple looped melody provides a contrast to the RuPaul-esque ramblings. Oliver$ does a serviceable job with his safe and steady remix, leaving it to 808 Fake to do away with the vocal and create a deeper mood driven by an insistent hat.

Hannya (6:18)
Magojiro (6:07)
Review: Over the course of a long release history Swiss duo In Flagranti have been seemingly quite happy to follow their creative urges, endlessly recycling their stylistic approach regardless of whether the results garner commercial and critical acclaim. This is very much evident on Skematic Tracks Vol. 2, with lead track "Hannya" discarding with their more recent heavily edited and smutty punk funk strut in favour of an understated and quite moody, reverb laden dub techno approach whose off the grid rhythmic base bears similarities to the recent Body Music EP from Powell. The equally unusually named "Magojiro" will probably find more favour with In Flagranti fans, a house jam that crams in plenty of disco infused funk, though like many tracks from the duo it plays out like one long tease. A rather large and unusually SFW poster is included.

I'll Be Loving You
Review: Steel City legend Richard Barratt, formerly DJ Parrot and one half of the iconic Bleep Techno act Sweet Exorcist alongside Richard H. Kirk returns with a second helping of self styled fraudulent disco goodness under the Crooked Man alias. The voice of Northern Sulphuric Soul himself Pete Simpson returns after featuring on the critically acclaimed debut drop Preset earlier this year, vocalising the monstrously grubby acid laden behemoth that is "Machine (Kills Me)" which should raise the serotonin levels of any self respecting dancefloor exponentially. Complementing this, "I'll Be Loving You" harks back to the bleep techno era from which Barratt first appeared, smartly combining rough and smooth elements with consummate results. All hail the Crooked Man!
