Landscape (original mix)
Landscape (Answer Code Request remix)
Review: Taking influence from the mutant Berlin techno scene of today, Mr. Dettmann eschews his typical monstrous 4/4 thump for a positively swung and submerged jaunt in the shape of "Landscape". The groove is 100 per cent garage, although the sounds themselves hiss and echo like the finest Basic Channel audio debris. It's a pleasing reminder of the Berghain resident's diversity when he's not behind the decks maintaining marathon levels of techno endurance. Answer Code Request step up for a remix that sounds markedly tougher, although still withholding that relentless kick drum that once typified this corner of electronic music, rounding off a thoroughly satisfying package of floor ready brutes.

With All Faces Bleached Out
Worn/Scarred
White/Drip
Review: The mysterious Rrose secured perhaps the most potent release in Sandwell District's glorious history with the thrillingly unrelenting sounds that permeated both sides of Merchant Of Salt. This was soon followed by the announcement that operations as we know it at Sandwell District HQ would soon halt, though the arrival of a new Rrose 12" was a final last surprise. "With All Faces Bleached Out" simmers with clinical restraint, offering several movements in sound sculpture as the needle draws unerringly towards the runout groove. Firstly, arid mechanical textures undulate through the swampy surrounds of sub bass and rippling percussion, seemingly falling victim to the increasing sensation of sonic claustrophobia before emerging midway in the midst of sub aquatic bleepery, only to be dragged back down in the closing spectral moments. The pin pricking sensation continues with a sense of almost gleeful menace with the two Rrose productions on the flip, though both are pretty much in the shadow of the epic A Side.

Review: Previously given away as a free digital release, Legowelt's The TEAC Life gets a richly deserved vinyl pressing, comprised of four twelve inches. On his website, he describes the 14-track opus as "deep, tape saturated forest-techno", as adroit a summation of his sound as any scribe has ever managed. The title is an obvious nod to the equipment made to construct the album, an admission which, rather than spoiling the mystique, only adds to it. The 14 tracks paint incredibly vivid images, from the audible tape hiss and raw drums on opener "The Night Wind", which leads to the windswept landscape of "Half Moon 106? and the slightly more polished Chicagoan jack of "The Soul of a City". The Virgo-esque string led romanticism of "Metro Airport" is one of many high points on what was one of 2011's best albums.

Review: Now regarded as something of a doyen for the UK techno community, Karl O'Connor aka Regis is revered with something approaching religious fervor in some circles. And it's little wonder; his brutal yet inherently funky and artful strand of techno brought together the worlds on industrial and DIY punk with pummeling 4x4 machine music long before any one else. Between1994 and 2000, he delivered a string of uncompromising techno records comparable to the early output of Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills, and here the Downwards imprint looks back on those halcyon days with the first volume of a Complete Recordings reissue. Certified fans won't bother reading this review - it's buy on sight material - but lovers of contemporary techno looking to trace the genre's diverse origins should look, listen and learn from one of the undisputed greats.

Twirl
Pinkman
Review: Having been crazily prolific throughout 2011 with a double LP and countless 12"s and remixes to their name, Swedish duo Skudge seem to have elected to take a curatorial role of late with their Skudge Presents offshoot. The series began in excellent fashion late last year with Mini Mood from the Edinburgh based producer Stephen Brown, and it's clear the label is going to maintain those standards with their forthcoming releases. Skudge's compatriot MRSK is first up opening with the ruggedly excellent "Twirl" which wraps burrowing metallic textures of sound around granite heavy rhythms that jostle uncomfortably in the steppish space between outright techno and more broken patterns. The inherent nightmarish scenario posed on the A Side is complemented by the liquefied slickness of "Pinkman" which sees a ghost deep in the machine attempt to have its voice heard amidst the pressure of a constantly upwardly shifting rhythmic flex and some wonderfully Utopian arpeggios. With forthcoming releases due from October and Aardvarck, Skudge Presents promises to be a considered highlight of 2012.

Review: The ever-adventurous Semantica label is a trusty place to find more unusual extrapolations of the techno discipline, and this time around Arcanoid has some perfectly dishevelled, beat-heavy electronica to offer. Recalling the warmth and punch of early Ai Records releases, there's a strong electro heart beating away at the core of these melancholic, considered tracks, but it lies under a thick fog of classic synthesiser action. Vangelis pads abound on tracks such as "House Of Frankenstein", which is marvellously underpinned by an arpeggio fit for a Romero movie. The sci-fi dread that hangs over the EP makes it an engrossing listen from start to finish.

Review: The ever-strong Analogue Solutions imprint continues its dedicated series for Eduardo De La Calle with two sublimely restrained cuts of dub techno. The grainy echoes and muted kicks are certainly familiar ground, but then this kind of music has always been about the overall vibe rather than distracting decoration. There's no faking this kind of militant approach to minimalism, paring everything down to such sweet simplicity as to take your mind to a plethora of places. It's an acquired taste, but this is certainly the strong end of the spectrum for dubwise DJs. Highly recommended.

Valley Of The Dry Bones
Review: Those late to the game with Chasing Voices will curse their tardiness as the mysterious enclave have carved themselves a niche that's all too easy to find yourself indulging in again and again. The fourth 12" on what we presume is their own Preserved Instincts label continues the one sided single track 12" approach - housed once again in eye catching screen printed artwork. "Valley Of The Dry Bones" continues the series' ultra refined approach to sound design, every element of the Stottified doom laden house deviation expertly placed. Much like the previous Chasing Voices 12"s it would be an ultra specific time and location where you could feasibly play this in front of a captive audience, but the sheer magnitude of the production is kind of screaming out for you to let it consume a sizeable sound system. Stunning!

Tom Dicicco - "Untitled"
Kowton - "Untitled"
Tom Dicicco - "Untitled" (Kowton remix)
Kowton - "Untitled" (Tom Dicicco remix)
Review: Two different but compatible interpretations of underground house and techno feature on this latest Project Squared release. The common bond is the absence of track titles - perhaps a reference to the slew of anonymous techno releases of recent years - but that's where the similarities between Kowton and Tom Dicicco's "Untitled" tracks end. First up it's Dicicco's contribution, a rolling dubby groove underpinned by doubled up claps and subtle yet effective filtering. Its strength rests on its ability to integrate elements of Chicago jack and the cheeky swagger of late 90s London tech-house. By contrast, Kowton's "Untitled" is more distinctive. The Bristol producer also borrows from familiar sources; there are slowly arcing acid lines and a repetitive 'you make' vocal sample - which sounds very like the one used on Spooky's progressive house anthem "Land of Oz" - but the synths swirl about in such a haunting manner and the beats are so heavy that the end result is truly different. Kowton proves his mettle again with his take on Dicicco's "Untitled". The arrangement is more stripped back, but it achieves the same effect with less, as its humming bass and lead-heavy beats bring Dicicco's groove back to a mid-tempo rumble. Dicicco then brings the release back to where it started with his version of Kowton's "Untitled". Filters sweep in over a dense, tracky rhythm as percussive ticks and claps show that while Dicicco may not be operating at the outer limits like Kowton, his understanding of underground dance music is second to none.

Mind Transfer
Mind Transfer (Claro Intelecto remix)
Succubus
Unauthorized
Review: Belgian imprint Mowar chalk up an impressive way to toast reaching their tenth release, unveiling a new talent in the shape of Searle, as well as securing a remix from Modern Love icon and recent Delsin addition Claro Intelecto! From the opening strains of lead track "Mind Transfer", it's clear the mysterious Searle prefers to occupy the darker, more claustrophobic recesses of the techno spectrum, sounding like Jamal Moss in one of his more concise moments, all intricately nuanced drum programming, alien vocal intonations and subterranean acid glitches. It's this track that Claro Intelecto tackles, spreading the original's acidic elements into an expansive bed of submerged sound upon which rhythmic elements are slowly built - first the metallic textures, then the throbbing kick drums and eventually more percussive elements. The accompanying tracks on the flip are just as impressive, with "Succubus" swiftly establishing itself as a burrowing 4am trip through Something In The Sky style techno and "Unauthorized" revealing itself to be a paranoia inducing production characterised by patterns of alien percussion.

Review: This is in many ways a rather odd album. Presented as a mix, it solely features tracks from Hamburg-based techno experimentalist Sven Tasnadi and lesser-known - but arguably fast-rising - German dub techno producer Jakob Altmann. Musically, it's pretty much as you'd expect, moving from crackling, uber-minimal ambience to throbbing, Detroit-influenced techno throbbers via a series of sparse, atmospheric and emotionless dub techno workouts. For those of a dub techno sensibility, it should make worthy listening, if only for the impressive amount of space contained within both producers' compositions. Getting something to simultaneously sound intimate and grandiose is a tough skill, but one that Altmann, in particular, manages impressively.

Review: At the moment nothing quite says German techno as much as Berlin's Vault Series. Now up to their eighth release via Subjected's solo Vault Series 8.0, the label again refuses to deviate from their renowned take on four to the floor purism. "008 A1" bristles with booming kicks and menacing chords that embrace heaving functionalism, whilst the pounding and stepped rhythms of "008 A2" sees stone cold percussion facilitate the fusion of industrial abrasiveness. The crunching beats and thundering bass lines now synonymous with Vault Series reigns supreme on "008 B_V1" - intent on obliterating anything in its path - whereas "008 B_V2" opts for a less crunch-more punch approach. V2 also brings V1's breathy vocal snippet to the foreground of its mix, allowing for more play among contorted synth stabs. Subjected is one of Berlin's most devout when producing industrial strength slabs of club techno, and once again he fuels a Vault Series juggernaut that relentlessly marches on.

Speak To Me
Model Friendship
Review: Lifted from Karl O'Connor's debut release as Regis, you'd best be prepared for a blast from the past when "Speak To Me" rips into action. That is, if you spent your time buried in the bass bin at 90s minimal techno raves, where the beats still fell hard and the bleeps came dredged up from the netherworld. "Model Friendship" takes things up a notch with a louder percussive aesthetic at work, while the same endlessly looped synth mantra rolls out in a mind-fugging call to arms. It's brutal, no-nonsense techno enjoying a second airing amidst contemporary music that owes everything to master forgers such as Regis.
