Recollections
Many Years Later
Recollections (The Cyclist mix)
Recollections (Cloudface mix)
Review: Liverpool-based producer Bantam Lions has long been part of the Scenery Records family, helping label boss ASOK launch the imprint with 2012's One To One EP. Here he returns with his third 12" for the label. Lead cut "Recollections" is particularly good, delivering a deep and attractive fusion of fuzzy analogue warm, dreamy melodies and intoxicating chords. He ups the tempo further on "Many Years Later". Which layers dubbed-out chords and swirling textures over an energy-packed techno groove. The accompanying remixes are pretty tasty, too, with The Cyclist particularly impressing with his Detroit techno-goes-lo-fi interpretation of "Recollections". That said, the dreamy, new age-influenced downtempo take from Mood Hut regular Cloudface is pretty darn good, too.

KDJ - "Untitled 1" (4:00)
KDJ - "Untitled 2" (5:35)
Rick Wade - "Thought Process" (6:35)
Rick Wade - "Forever Night" (6:34)
Review: The Moods & Grooves Classics series - in which vintage, long deleted gems from the back catalogue get another airing - continues with a strong quartet of tracks from Kenny Dixon Jnr and Rick Wade. The two untitled tracks from Dixon, under his occasional KDJ moniker, originally slipped out way back in 2000. Both are superb, with the goodtime shuffle of "Untitled 2" (all jangly house pianos and looped disco-influenced grooves) just losing out to the slower, African-inspired "Untitled 1" in the "EP highlight" stakes. Wade's two contributions - deep, spacious, blazed and deliciously melodious - are taken from his 1999 Quantum Expression EP. Of these, it's the enveloping, jazz-flecked warmth of "Forever Night" that stands out

Never In Doubt
Storms
Tin
Review: To the uninitiated, Zennor is Bristol pair Andy Mac and Peverelist and on the basis of this debut release for The Trilogy Tapes, it looks to be an opportunity for them to approach the form of club music from a straighter angle. Indeed, there is certainly a less complicated feel to the three tracks here and it's no bad thing, with a certain Newworldaquarium charm to the manner in which lead cut "Never In Doubt" gracefully covers the A side. The slippery broken beats which surface deep into the production's duration are perhaps the one concession to current Bristol dynamics. There are hints of Detroit in the chords and keys of "Storms" whilst the brief, twisting "Tin" is perhaps the closest thing to Livity Sound here. Shout outs to Bankhead for the Cornish seaside cover art too!

Hustlin'
Astral
Review: Coming from the darkest depths of the South American jungle but raised in the city of Utrecht in Holland, Julian Alexander is a name that might not have fallen on many ears as yet but we guarantee you'll be hearing a lot of this 18 yr old powerhouse in the future. With a background in jazz and a trained multi instrumentalist, exploring Hip Hop and underground House and UK Garage, Julian soon started to craft a unique style and put his own slap and funk into the mix. Focusing on a deep powerful sound with plenty of pound he quickly caught our attention as his meaty, stripped down minimalism explores an even darker chamber of the 'dungeon' . Julian's Hustlin' EP delivers the kind of tracks that keep the floor moving, essential tools that can be the perfect transition or the spark that lights the fuse on on the dance floor. Can you believe he made the track UNDRG at the ripe old age of 16 years old. It really blows our minds to think he made it 2 years ago and it still sounds fresh and futuristic. As with all our releases these jams are tried and tested and proved to be very useful for building the tension and getting those fist pumping. Their solid, track, bass heavy vibe will have no problem bothering even the biggest bass bins.

Reelsoul - "Feel The Love"
C & M Productions - "Possible"
Cotterell - "Who You Are" (raw club mix)
Review: We are very proud to present our next release in the series "Various People". The first tracks comes from the very respected and highly in demand US artist "Reelsoul", Reelsoul delivers a classic underground vibe, raw beats and harsh organ stabs, one for the heads! Next up, True to our Plastik People tradition another track from the vaults! this time we see C & M Productions track "Possible", this track originally came out on the Lesson One EP back in 1997 ,which to this day is extremely rare and hard to find. Last up, Label boss Marc Cotterell delivers a new track under his "Cotterell" moniker, Striped down beats from that 95 era, Organ stabs, Old school vocals and a baseline that will destroy any dance floor. very much reminiscence of early KOT who he loves and respects very highly

Together
Review: After an impressive debut on BRSTL in 2012, Jay L is back on this white label release that has already garnered a lot of love from switched on house heads. It's a no-messing single sided release that builds on the foundations of his previous outing, offering up dusty, soul-inflected deep house music with a Detroit twist and a Bristol heart. There's a hooky vocal lick, but more notable is the perfectly filtered fuzziness of the chords that inject that all-important character into the track. With a bit of luck this should pave the way for more Jay L release to drop in the very near future.

Companion (with DJ Sprinkles)
Bring The Sun (feat Gry)
Faded (dub)
Review: Anthony Collins and Francis Harris have been on a roll with the deep house they have been turning out on Scissor & Thread thus far, and here they do it once again with the cosy Autumnal sound of the You 12". "Companion" finds DJ Sprinkles lending a hand to a seriously downtempo dub house cut rich with melancholic chords and distant vocals. "Bring The Sun" comes in a little closer with Gry on board, presumably providing the thoughtful croon in amongst the emotive synth swells. "Faded (Dub)" is a more mechanical beast that thuds down in a decidedly morose fashion for all lovers of downer house music.

Ron Basejam - "Dippin' In" (feat Danielle Moore)
Chicago Damn - "High Time"
Review: Wolf Music White No. 4 arrives and it's another heavyweight line up with the masterful Ron Basejam and Chicago Damn sharing sides. Up top Mr Basejam is on fine form with "Dipping In" a near perfectly judged slice of dancefloor delight that will work as a perfect bridge between disco and house cuts. His Crazy P pardner Danielle Moore adds that extra element of delight with her soulful vocals atop. Down below Chicago Damn makes his second Wolf appearance with "High All Night", a killer house cut that applies a similar vocal sample to Marco Shuttle's "The Vox Attitude" to a booming rhythm made up of rolling drums and cut up disco loops. Typical Wolf quality through and through

Essence (Tomoki Tamura & Sierra Sam 2014 remix)
Review: Coming on 500 limited edition coloured vinyl is this new EP from Sierra Sam on Tomoki Tamura's Holic Trax.
Analogue machine loving Sierra Sam is probably best know as a techno specialist but this EP - made up of original tracks that were first produced 15 years ago - showcases his house music
side and does so in some style. One new edit comes from Sierra Sam in cahoots with Tamura, and the label head also turns out a great DJ tool edit to complete the package.

The Way I Began
Fire Egg
Iris
Review: At once foreign and familiar, Desert Sound Colony brilliantly scores a nostalgic journey through the proverbial looking glass. The plaintiff vibe of "The Way I Began" envelopes the listener in warm guitar licks and hushed vocals, transporting them to a time when innocence and insecurity gave way to transcendence. The road takes a turn with "Fire Egg", a classic stomper that drives introspection with looping guitar melody and bouncy bass. And before we return to size, "Iris" carries us further inward with scattered claps and a skipping kick, before releasing us into a deep and chugging, eyes-wide-shut, euphoric roller.

Simple Love (feat J'Danna)
Petals
Review: Fresh from his sojourns into more leftfield terrain on All Caps as Ekranoplan alongside Kowton, Julio Bashmore switches focus back to his upcoming debut LP with another Broadwalk 12". Lead track "Simple Love" is really a masterclass in melding the dancefloor with poppy intentions, as Bashmore lays out an impeccably produced house cut - big crisp drum programming, deftly filtered synths, booming bassline - all finished off with a sweet vocal hook from J Danna. On the flip "Petals" feels drawn from the same palette as Bashmore's Velour project with Hyetal, though the velvety thick melodic work are applied to a super tough house flex that's deftly cut up.

The Isms (original)
The Isms (Anthony Nicholso Sleazy remix)
The Isms (Lil Louis dub)
Review: The ever outspoken Chicago house champ Glenn Underground teams up with Charles Matlock to deliver a heavily loaded message on "The Isms", making a strong statement about judgmental door policies to a typically funky backdrop of GU house styles. It's a sure fire party starter with a purpose, and it's backed by two remixes that expand on the original idea. Anthony Nicholson's "Sleazy Remix" works a more broken beat flavour underneath the track and a dreamy line in synths, while Lil Louis turns in a cheeky dub that throws in chops from his own "New Dance Beat" amongst other sources while sticking true to the original.

John Swing - "Keep It Up"
EMG - "Good Inside"
Review: The number 13 proves lucky for the Relative crew here as label regulars John Swing and EMG share sides on a raw and ready house 12" primed for deployment in basements and warehouses. Up top Mr Swing conjures the spirit of Ron Hardy on "Keep It Up", digging out ghostly remnants of disco tracks of days gone by and setting them thick within a rugged house groove that just demands turntable attention. It's much a similar vibe from EMG on the flip with "Good Inside" dominated by a tearing array of drum sounds and a great vocal hook. Word on the tweet is EMG has a record forthcoming on Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes too!

Review: It's taken Defected a while to get round to putting together a Masters at Work retrospective for their popular House Masters series. Given the New York duo's legendary status, this is something of a surprise. Even so, this double-vinyl set - a more expansive CD edition is also available - does a good job in rounding up some of their highlights, touching on forgotten gems as well as well-known anthems ("The Nervous Track", the brilliant "The Ha Dance"). It's nice to revisit the MAW-produced 1994 cut "Voices in My Mind" (effectively a side project featuring regular vocalist India), and, in particular, the stomping, piano-laden soulful house flex of Kenny and Louie's classic Dub of Lood and Donell Rush's "Shout N Out".

Paradigm Shift (Mail Yells edit)
That's Up (Ben mono edit)
Mudy (Black Loops & Gropina edit)
La Musica (DJ Steef edit)
Review: Launched two years ago, Gomma offshoot Toy Tonics has really grown in the ensuing period and developed its own vibe focused more specifically on house jams as opposed to punky disco of it's elder brother. The Tonic Edits series is a more recent expansion and this third volume keeps up the heat of previous transmissions. Arriving under the collective banner of the Toy Tonic DJs, contributions come from Ben Mono, DJ Steef, Maik Yells, and Black Loops & Gropina. All four are great little DJ tools, with Italian pair Black Loops & Gropina excelling particularly on their techno-fied version of a punk funk classic (it shouldn't be too hard to guess the source material).

Mein Peas
One Eight Four
If I Did (feat Freddie Norwood)
Review: The latest Untzz slab sees label regulars Mic Mills, Furious Frank & Bessie combine under the MFB banner for perhaps the deepest cuts yet from the Australian label. One Eighty Four also reveals an apparent connection between Adelaide and Detroit that was, according to the label's release notes, most prominent and channeled fully across the three productions. The merest hint of Motor City electro ripples through lead track "Mein Peas", complemented by a supple bassline arpeggio that's filled with emotive qualities and this is a template that MFB draw from successfully as the EP progresses. The star gazing title cut sounds like a restrained Legowelt, whilst release highlight "If I Did" is made all the more memorable by that distinct touch of burliness brought to proceedings by Freddie Norwood.

Review: It's been a fast rise for Petr Serkin under his own name, largely releasing on his own Freedom Sessions imprint following time spent delving into more minimal business as Bip Soup with Andrey Zots. There's plenty of refined funk licks and smooth melodies at work on Woodmaster, from the disco sass of the title track to the moodier chords of "Dirty Hero". "In Focus" has a more laid back vibe perfect for hazier party sessions, while "Rooftop" is equally loungey in its beatdown roll and smoky keys, without compromising on low-end punch. If you need some to-the-point classy deep house in your life then look no further.

Bittersuite - straight up late night house music, deep and emotional pads with amazing keys, perfect track to complete the side Side B delivers a exceptional track by a secret artist - not much needs to be said, just check the track & your understand what its all about. Claude Young - "You Give Me" (instrumental)
Review: Originally dropped in 1993, this release on Kelli Hand's Acacia imprint features all the grittiness of early Detroit house, with Claude Young making one of his smoother appearances with the two versions of "You Give Me". K Hand's "Everybody" is a sensual cut dripping with late night sweaty energy even as it pumps out under a layer of fuzz. Meanwhile the "Dub" of "You Give Me" finds Young delivering his knack for plush synths into a sublime, bumping groove, and whether you prefer the dubbed out vocals or not, both tracks lay waste to modern pretenders with an effortless class that just can't be faked.

Where You Gonna Go?
Where You Gonna Go? (Andres remix)
Peace It Together
Review: Categorizing the work of beatmaker Paul White has always been difficult. Predictably, "Where You Gonna Go?" - the first single to be taken from his Shaker Notes LP - is similarly hard to define. It's wonderfully haunting and exotic, with Arabic-influenced instrumentation and marimba melodies riding a slack-tuned drum groove, watery electronic noises and drifting vocals. It's a thing of rare beauty, even if it does defy convention. There's more 'hard-to-pigeonhole' fare to be found on "Peace It Together", a Middle Eastern-influenced chunk of enveloping electronic jazz. The package is completed by a superb remix of the title track from Detroit native Andres, whose shuffling, soul-flecked deep house beats and warm Rhodes chords provide the perfect compliment to White's weary scat vocals.
