Duster
Reflex
Pitch Drift
Review: It's safe to say Midland is now one of Aus Music's marquee artists. This Duster EP provides the Englishman with his seventh release on Will Saul's label since 2010 with that killer split 12" with Ramadanman (now Pearson Sound). The title track features a Caribou-like bassline and synths which swell and vary in size over a skipping house beat. "Replex" is rougher and frenetically percussive while still remaining melodic, while "Pitch Drift" is the deepest production on the record that some how, in amongst the trippiness of it all, stays tropical.

Steve O'Sullivan vs Kashawar - "Take A Seat"
Titonton Duvante - "Such Good Taste"
Eric Cloutier - "Balsamaceous"
Review: "Mosaic Split Series kickstarts 2014 with three solid tracks of silky deepness that build upon the Mosaic sound of old whilst remaining firmly in the present.

A: Steve O'Sullivan vs Kashawar "Take a Seat"

Label boss, Steve O'Sullivan , follows up his recent Sushitech releases with this collaboration with young German producer Kashawar who has been gaining fans over the last year with his solidly atmospheric and funky EPs on Autoreply and Project London Records.

Raw, slow old school house beats is the order of the day here with a sprinkling of melodic nu school deep techno touches that help to make this track perfect for both the warm up or after party.

Just listen to the vocal sample if you have any doubts ... "Relax baby...Mr Big will take care of you in a minute."

B1: Titonton Duvante "Such Good Taste"

Despite an impressive back catalogue , including releases on Metamorphic, 7th City and Planet E , US techno veteran Titonton remains one of techno's best kept secrets and to say we are happy to welcome him to Mosaic is a massive understatement.

Fusing the melodic edge of classical Detroit Techno with the jacking dancefloor intensity of Chicago, Titonton's "Such Good Taste," is a welcome addition to the Mosaic catalogue. ....the combination of kick drum and bassline alone are a thing of beauty... there is no way your ass won't move to this beast!

B2: Eric Cloutier " Balsamaceous"

Eric has made a name of himself over the last few years on the DJ circuit with sets that have been described as sprawling in depth and sophistication, fusing the brooding intensity of tripping techno with the mechanic funk of contemporary house. Thankfully for Mosaic his productions do the same!

"Balsamaceous" is Eric's second release and showcases perfectly his unique take on the Detroit/Berlin Techno schooling he has obviously had: a deeply emotional yet hip wiggling take on the techno/house hybrid.

This is one that will get the more discerning dancefloors shaking this year. Pure class is an understatement!

Voodog (part 1)
Voodog (part 2)
Review: Making a rare excursion outside of his Perlon familiarities, Ricardo Villalobos contributes to Einzelkind's Proper Traxx imprint with two upfront groovers that keep the energy levels up without compromising on the minimal maven's hyper-focused attention to detail, not to mention his love of a cheeky sample or two. The rhythm stays consistent on both sides, shuffling in a micro house arrangement for lovers of twitchy funk everywhere, while the oddball speech and licks from recognisable disco classics keep things interesting in the midst of the extended grooves. This is as DJ-friendly as you could ever wish contemporary Villalobos to be, and it should keep stripped down dancefloors shaking long into the morning.

More 4
Real
Despre Ei
Review: The Premiesku trio have been quiet since the release of their debut album, Indirect, on Desolat in 2012. They re-emerged as a troupe this year with a 12" on the busy Vakant operation and now they surface on the Apollonia operation fronted by Shonky, Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Sondorom. "More 4" is built of loops which athletically repeat on themselves for a cut of super techy but lean house music, while "Real" rises from the murky deep for something a little lighter and skippy. "Despre Ei" is the real gem though, as it's full of funk, while remaining moody but up beat. Killer 12".

It's (Not) Just An 808
It's (Not) Just An 808 (Warehouse mix)
Review: You'd perhaps expect a collaboration between veteran dub disco eccentric DJ Spun and one-time Spacetime Continuum man Jonah Sharp to be a particularly spaced-out affair. By and large, this first 12" under the collective Loose Control Band moniker is, with the deep ambient dub-meets-808 electro of "It's (NOT) Just An 808" sounding like one of Sharp's own productions from the late '90s. There's a similarly intergalactic feel to the tougher, chunkier "Warehouse Mix" of the same track, while "Bent" is a prime chunk of muddy, early Dubtribe San Francisco deep house crossed with Spun's usual dub disco grooves. Best of all, though, is "Lose Control", an unflinchingly positive chunk of breezy jazz-house complete with cymbal-heavy percussion and gentle electronic builds.

Rare Consistence
Pull Down Your Mask
Review: After two highly sought-after early releases, the Giegling-affiliated Edward's alter ego heads off in search of pastures new and winds up at the top-of-the-line Assemble Music imprint, a natural home for the weirdo house tones of the project. "Rare Consistency" is a playful beast that lays the percussion down soft and lets a veritable jungle of exotic noises flirt around the finger clicks and tapping bottles. "Pull Down Your Mask" takes a slightly more shaped-out approach that rides on guttural bass growls and a strict beat but it's no less odd an experience, calling out to all internal travelers of an adventurous disposition.

OdD - "Lignum Vitae"
Barac - "Lignum Vitae" (remix)
Barac - "Leontopodium"
OdD - "Leontopodium" (remix)
Review: Reaching beyond their own creative vision for their third release, the shadowy OdD Music crew invite like-minded soul Barac to come and join in on the hypnotic fun and games as a double-pack of loud-cut jams offer up creative routes into the thriving minimal breakbeat movement. The original mix of "Lignum Vitae" is a subtle beast that works with hushed tones and brushed percussion to create a truly haunting effect, while Barac injects a little more low end action and rolling rhythm into his remix to wake the track up from its elegant slumber. On the second disc Barac takes the mantle first with the slick drum-rich thrill of "Leontopodium", which is a patient and cyclical DJ tool of the highest order, leaving the gat open for OdD to serve up a choice stripped down remix on the flip.

Newmerique (Mango Boys Sunday dub)
Mac (Daddy) RIP (Mango Boys Hurting dub)
Tollgate PO (Mango Boys Red Eye mix)
Review: Mr G knows how to make a record, but even more so he knows how to make a club track. But for this Remote Viewing EP MR G offers up three productions of his own for the Mango Boys to dub-out and remix. First is a 'Sunday dub' to "Newmerique" which is straight up, chord-driven, club house, while the 'Hurting dub' to "Mac (Daddy) RIP" is woozy, deep and very danceable with a bassline to boot. For a third option there's a linear 'Red Eye' mix to "Tollgate PO" completing a great selection of DJ tools.

Borai - "The Rejection"
Deep88 - "Works"
Oliver Deutschmann - "Straight Up My All"
Freestyle Man - "Give It To Me"
Review: It's been a while since we heard anything from Bristol's best dressed chicken in town Borai, so it's great to see him leading the way on this second edition of the Jackoff Beats series from Berlin label Jackoff Records. Indeed this is Boris English's second contribution to the series, having appeared on last year's inaugural 12" alongside Iron Curtis and Oli Deutschmann. "The Rejection" demonstrate's Borai's lost none of his production verve for emotionally loaded house music and sets a high bar for what follows. Deep88 rolls deep on a lo fi filtered disco flex with the excellent "Works" whilst Oliver Deutchsmann also maintains his 100% Jackoff Beats appearance record with the stripped down acid burner "Straight Up My All". A welcoming titular vocal hook is the key element around which the Freestyle Man lays down a classic dusty house groove on the closing "Give It To Me".

Run Away From The Sun
Lola In The City
Legende
Walty
Review: Matias Aguayo returns to the warm bosom of Cologne's Kompakt label - the imprint on which he first made his name - for his first outing of 2014. The typically atmospheric Legende is not a great departure musically - his usual skewed pop, minimal techno, subtle new wave guitars, fuzzy electronica and woozy ambient influences are all present and correct - but it is decidedly impressive (thanks, in no small part, to his mastery of mood and melody). The title track impresses with its' fluttering, glitchy approach, while "Run Away From The Sun" recalls his early material on Kompakt Pop. Best of all, though, is "Lola in the City", a decidedly off-kilter fusion of traditional Chilean instrumentation, spacey bleep melodies and a scratchy, loose-sounding groove.

Got That Swing
JB's
Review: In an interesting move, Bass Culture have decided to reissue two previous Mr G jams on one record to give them a fresh airing. "Got That Swing" originally surfaced as a digital-only bonus to the G's Spot! EP from 2011, and it's more than worthy of the wax space. With its sultry chord stabs, discofied bassline and steamy vocal lick it hits all the right spots for a purposeful and workable late night cut. On the flip, "JB's" previously aired on the Extended Pain EP, and here it gets another chance to sink under your skin with its hypnotic throb, from the sensual pad to the stripped down beat, all capped off with a funky stab that sounds seismic in the slender surroundings.

Sorry
Review: After a summer off to bask in the props for their superb Essential Mix, the Dixon Avenue Basement Jams crew engage label mode once again with this 11th release an introduction to new artist Modini. As with a good majority of artists involved on DABJ, there is next to no information out there on Modiini (take the search engine challenge if you want) but really does it matter when the material on display is this good? There's an obvious reverence for classic Chicago tropes at play throughout, though lead cut "Estate" is the sort of thing you can see Erol Alkan dropping for sure. "Fear" is pretty darn excellent; veering off into abstract Green Velvet meets Mo Fulton territory and Modini gets even rowdier on the flip with the peak time squelcher "Fumble". This release marks the onset of the label including limited edition monotone prints from Dan Axon - simple ink on paper describing the energy of DABJ; it's origins, people, and most importantly the music.

Review: Crazy 12" from Rush Hour's No 'Label' operation which really offers some insight into the deranged production mind of Irish producer and selector Morgan Buckley. Not only does Shout Out To All The Weirdos In Rathmines possess one of this year's best titles, it possesses some of the most distinctive music put to wax in 2014. There's plenty of mixtape potential across the four tracks be it the Charles Manier does psyche rock of "Call Incoming" or the pure mind bending psychedelia of "Inner City Hum" on the A Side or the more floor friendly bump of the two B Side cuts. More please Mister Buckley.

Gamma Ray (Legowelt remix)
Review: Originally started in 2004 as an outlet for Richard Fearless' Death In Vegas project, the Drone label had been on hiatus for almost a decade when the English musician decided the time was right to reboot it. The new era of Drone was inaugurated with a 12" from Fearless himself which featured a remix from the always excellent D'Marc Cantu and it seems this is a template that will be used for the foreseeable future. Here Fearless indulges his cosmic side with the bristling analogue techno business of "Gamma Ray" which is turned inside out by Danny Wolfers whose remix uncovers all manner of textural detail and pitch bent vocals. Let's hope the italo disco gem from Fearless that Prosumer has been dropping makes it to Drone some time soon!

Review: Plastic Love welcomes fellow Angeleno Michael Walsh on board for the 2nd release on their budding label. Walsh's debut EP showcases the producer's breadth and depth of all things rave with two distinct tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Before When It Was New's unmistakeable melody act as a call to the dancefloor while a rumbling bassline underneath keeps you locked into a groove. Strobe Light's arpeggiated bassline and snappy disco drums showcase how versatile Walsh can be. Remixes come courtesy of label co-boss Maheras as well as Caravan boss and Aus Music stalwart DJ October.

Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.
