Patrice Scott - "Journey To The Unknown"
Keith Worthy - "Cyclops"
Luke Hess - "Tolox"
Kai Alce - "Rockin K-Tel"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: For those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of Detroit deep house and techno, this EP from Michael Zucker's Finale Underground imprint (an offshoot of his Finale Sessions label) should be an essential purchase. With the likes of Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy and Luke Hess involved, you'd expect the quality threshold to be high. It is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. Hess' hypnotic techno jam "Tolox" is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of Keith Worthy's brilliant "Cyclops". Best of all, though, is Scott's "Journey Into The Unknown", which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, Transmat-style Motor City rhythms.

Review: Always a tease, Levon Vincent chose to announce the release of his long-await debut album by drip-feeding information on social media. The subsequent meltdown among the online techno community may have been amusing to watch, but is testament to the Berlin-based New Yorker's impact over the last 10 years. Typically, concrete info has remained thin on the ground aside from the fact it stretches across some four slabs of vinyl and features a homage to Levon's cat Mona. Just before the physical copies were due for release, Vincent elected to give out the 11 track LP digitally for free so it's highly likely you know how it sounds already. If you are a true advocate of his output you'll want this quadruple wax edition! Next-level house and techno dedicated to the "ugly ducklings of the world"!

Paper Plan (dub)
Review: Despite impressing with their grasp of dancefloor dynamics and classic house influences, Italian duo Die Roh rarely release material. To date, they've released just three EPs and one album - written with regular studio pal Steve Murphy - in three years. There's a significant chance, then, that the Lancia Delta EP could be their only outing in 2015. It's predictably as essential as their previous releases, with A-side "Xm II" - a thrillingly locked-in, heads-down concoction boasting bumping Italian house drums and superbly evocative chords - leading the charge. They show their robust side on the muscular acid funk of "Composed 22", while "Paper Plan (Dub)" does a neat job of fusion loopy, techno style rhythms with glassy-eyed deep house chords.

Brame & Hamo - "Clockwerk"
Brame & Hamo - "Clockwerk" (Session Victim remix)
Hamo - "SOUL"
Brame - "Full Custody"
Review: The sleepy seaside town of Sligo, based on Ireland's Atlantic coast, seems an unlikely location to base a deep house label. More remarkably, this debut 12" from Sligo-based Splendor & Squalor comes from two residents of the town: longtime DJ buddies and hip-hop/deep house fusionists Brame and Hamo. It's a strong first outing, with each of the three original cuts coming doused in smooth soul and hip-hop influences. That's means beats that swing, sensual strings, chunky bass and the kind of pads that seem to wrap themselves around your body. The duo's collaborative "Clockwork" - arguably the pick of the bunch - is also remixed by Session Victim (think ultra-deep goodness), while Hamo's sample-heavy "Soul" offers the perfect balance between smiling deep house and classic hip-house.

Review: Its early days for M5K, and equally Voyager Recordings is slowly emerging with a particular style, but already the future looks rosy for both artist and label on the strength of this synth soaked release. "Sassy Typhoon" comes on like Space Dimension Controller, before "Marcy Ave Parlay" and "Ford Capri" ramp up the Moog basslines and let the 80s electro funk shine through in a classy house framework. IMYRMIND drops a bugging remix of "Ford Capri" for all the wonky beat heads out there, and then M5K rounds the EP with the peppy strut of "No Time For Sheisty Types" and the low-slung breeze of "Rockaway Beach".

Kangaroo Ground
Ferntree Gully
Review: Over his last few releases, Australian producer Tornado Wallace has crafted a trademark sound that blends colourful, kaleidoscopic melodies with dreamy chords and an almost Balearic sense of glassy-eyed release. Interestingly, these aural trademarks are played down a little on this follow-up to his 2013 Beats In Space debut. Sure, they can be heard in the picturesque, luscious beauty of flipside "Ferntree Gully", but the title track is an altogether rougher concoction. "Kangaroo Ground" sees the Melbourne man successfully try his hand at acid house, layering twisted 303 lines and occasional cosmic chords over a clanking drum machine rhythm. It's a surprise, but a very impressive one.

BitterSuite - "Familiar Currents" (part 2)
Review: Having established DeepSystems as a radio show some years back, Matt Pond (one third of the BitterSuite collective) has decided to launch a record label under the same name. Given his contacts, it's a smart move. Two close pals - BitterSuite member Jon Gray and Dan '1Dan' Rodgers - join forces as Tales Ov Rossi, laying down a slowly shifting chunk of deep, heads-down house that stretches across one side of the 12". On the flip, Gray goes solo under the BitterSuite banner, delivering the two-part "Familiar Currents". Both versions sound heavily inspired by the dense percussion, expansive musicality and rich soundscapes of Ron Trent.

Review: With a title like Dutty Grooves, you'd expect the resultant EP to be packed with the kind of sweaty, raw and, well, dirty material that makes you want to dance on tables in various states of undress. Predictably, that's exactly what John Swing provides on this excellent EP for the Relative label he co-runs with sometime studio pal EMG. While there is a deeper, loopier track included (closer "Run Out Jam"), it's the surging, balls-out material that really hits the spot. Top of the class is probably the bumpin' basement jam "I'm Here", though the throbbing dirty disco-house cut-up "Build It Up" is similarly big.

Birds Of Paradise
Review: Mic Newman, or otherwise known as the one and only Fantastic Man, returns to Fine Choice Records with yet more of his very own organic house music. With previous outings on Wolf Music and Let's Play House, among others, Fantastic Man has now weaved his way into dance music's epicentre and his tunes have been coveted by the likes of London's Tief and Feel My Bicep crews. "Snake Charmer" is a tropical house lick complete with monkey sounds and all, whereas "Donkey Punch" is somewhat of a hybrid thanks to its broken beat pattern and oddball bassline - what a peach! Over on the B-side, "El Tropo" is an uber deep cut with a rather lovely set of Balearic melodies, but the real treat is "Birds Of Paradise" thanks to its utter neglect of a 4/4 beat pattern. Instead, Newman creates a tight, functional groove out of sparse and airy flurries of sound. Recommended.

Nuits Sonores (11:57)
Nectarines (6:21)
Review: Sam Shepherd has long been a master of the kind of ultra-deep, rolling, soft focus deep house that raises the spirits and soothes the soul. Even so, there's something incredibly special about "Nuits Sonores", the lead track from this must-have EP. Based around a deep, tactile groove and blessed with rising synth solos, dancing acid lines and his usual fireside Rhodes antics, the track rises magnificently for 12 spellbinding minutes. As it progresses, further elements make their way into the mix, until it reaches the kind of organic deep house climax that makes even the grumpiest souls go weak at the knees. Flip for "Nectarines", the kind of loose-limbed fusion of deep house sassiness, Detroit techno electronics and fluid jazz drumming at which Shepherd has always excelled.

Review: Iron Curtis delivers his 2nd full 4 track EP for Hudd Traxx following up the huge 'Stansfield EP' in 2010. The opening track 'Care' demonstrates IC's diversity as a Producer as he lays down a killer bassline with melodic keys which will find it's way into many big hitters bags. 'Sing Along With Your Friends' has deep laid keys and an MCDE esk feel to it accompanied by some heavy snares for good measure. Flip for the B Side and find 'Shouting & Screaming', a dark driving track that even Spencer Kinsey would be proud of. Iron Curtis rounds off the EP with a solid groovy little number entitled 'Lasga's Return'

Review: Established back in 2010, the Sudden Drop sub label from Fear Of Flying tends to choose it's output wisely with just over ten releases in this period coming from a respected cast of producers like Iron Curtis, Bleak, Roger Gerressen, and Leif. We can add to this list Ethyl & Flori, a long standing production partnership that has always stood for quality, whose 3 track Transcripts 12" shows the pair at their most diverse. "White Lotus Rebellion" is characterised by playful drums and fluttering, bird like sonics atop a Chicago indebted groove whilst "Sidestep" lives up to it's name as the pair veer off into abstract broken UK house territory. B side hogger "Shorthand" is heads down techno at it's finest.

Get Up At Noon
Review: The latest cuts on Nsyde come from Christopher Rau in a fresh alias. T.R. "Early" Earl may be a new concern, but the sound is unmistakably Rau, albeit in a slightly rawer form. "Bad Conduction" is a dirty cut in the STL idea of the word, keeping the noises as grubby and sparse as possible while maintaining high levels of funk with a minimum of ingredients. "Turn Loose" has more of that Smallville-friendly melodic goodness in its bones, but it's still marked out by distorted drums that bump and grind against each other gleefully. "Get Up At Noon" too features plenty of heart-warming soul, and the more simple and restrained drum set places it in decidedly familiar territory for any fans of Rau's existing work.

Close Quarters
Review: Those who heard Harvey Sutherland's excellent debut EP for Echovolt, Edges EP, will be familiar with his trademark sound - a toasty, analogue style take on deep house marked out by jazz-funk chord progressions, warming synthesizer melodies and shuffling grooves. He changes the script a little on this EP for Voyage Recordings, though there's still plenty of seductive deep house to enjoy (most notably opener "Oscillate" and the Inskwel style, boogie-influenced loveliness of "Bamboo"). Where the EP really comes into its own, though, is when he tries a different tack. "Old Wars" sounds like Moon B's electrofunk explorations wrapped in a snuggly duvet, while "Close Quarters" successfully fixes Herbie Hancock style synth melodies to loose, cymbal heavy beats.

You may have heard of Jacksonville already, from his superb track (Tokyo) for Atmospheric Existence, as well as releases on his own imprint Doppler records. Following him is the very talented Jose Lau of Deepselect Records from California, bringing with him his signature, warm, intelligent sound, who not surprisingly had a recent release on Pulp. Next is the mysterious duo Gauss, who you probably know about from their imprint of the same name. Their rather excellent track brings a more techy edge to the EP. While he's still active, it's the early '90s material he released on the Far East Recordings label - an imprint he founded soon after his graduation in 1990 - that most excites. Following the 2014 re-release of his sublime hook-up with Nami Shimada, "Sunshower", Rush Hour has decided to put together this excellent retrospective. 2DeepSoul - "Home"
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Deserted"
Review: We can't remember the last time we came across a 7" single of straight-up deep house. Certainly, it's a novelty, though there's little novel or cheeky about the two tracks showcased on this diddy, coloured vinyl release from Spain's Minuendo label. 2DeepSoul's A-side, "Home", is effortlessly melodious - a warm, rich and enticing blend of shuffling rhythms, swirling chords and the kind of blissfully electronic melodies that make you want to dance with your eyes shut. There's a more organic and quietly soulful feel about Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana's flipside effort, "Deserted". Blessed with a delicious double bass line, bespoke keys and a whisper of Motor City techno (in terms of the electronics, at least), it's a sublime chunk of sensual deepness.

Review: In order to celebrate arriving at their tenth year, Jus Ed's Underground Quality label picks up on Unity Kolabo, a vinyl series that has laid dormant for a while, and there is a suitably high profile cast of contributing talent. The presence of DJ Koze and Lawrence is likely to stop many a deep house appreciator in their tracks, and contributions from this European pair are complemented by some under the radar talent. Tape Club's Jo Nathan sets the tone with the crisp, warbling deepness of "That Other Train", and it's nice to see Koze turn in one of his most joyous productions in recent memory in the shape of "NYC Dub". The subsequent six cuts all retain that Underground Quality and demonstrate Unity Kolabo Part 6 & 7 to be a fine way to celebrate 10 years. PS do check the mind bending Son Of Sound contribution - our personal favourite!

Journey's End
Review:  Layered, progressive, modern electronic music with ethereal harmonics and a nod to analogue forefathers is a universal in John Daly's musical cannon. And with Shine he's formulated a song that could encapsulate a moment in time at a Love Fever party. That 5am throb. Peaks and lows of a breather in the night, the sweating crowd, the stabbing baseline and fluctuating strings played loud and proud. In short, and unstoppable EP from a producer on the very top of his game. A Detroit influenced yet clearly very contemporary EP with strong support already on this one. With the B-Side, Desake floats into the EP, with a lead vocal stab layering into a dream-like baseline and rolling drum pattern continuing where Shine left off. And Journey's End may well be the secret weapon on this EP, playing out like a bard's lament.

Saine - "Daze" (Four Walls & Funkyjaws remix)
Review: Shadeleaf Music boss Thatmanmonkz has decided to do a little musical matchmaking on this release. It features original material from both Belarusian duo Four Walls & Funkyjaws, and Helsinki-based Saine, with each act also remixing the other's track. Four Walls and Funkyjaws' "Bring Me To Space" lives up to its name, lacing boogie-influenced synth melodies atop intergalactic chords and a loose and jazzy deep house groove. Saine opts for a more hypnotic, locked-in vibe on his sumptuous remix of the same track. He gets a little more expansive on his own "Saine Daze" - whilst retaining the slightly blazed feel associated with his productions - before the Eastern European pair weigh in with a slightly jauntier revision that wisely makes great use of Saine's sensual synths and soul-flecked chords.

Review: HNNY seems to save his best for Local Talk. His previous three EPs for the Swedish imprint - "For The Very First Time", "Yearning" and, of course, "Tears" - have all become staples of deep house sets over the past 18 months. Happily, "Noth-ing" is another cracker - a single-sided salvo shot through with the sort of breezy sweetness we've come to expect from the Swede. The track itself fuses bubbling flutes and impassioned vocal samples with typically fluid deep house beats, a languid (but heavy) bassline and just the right amount of cosseting pads. It's perhaps a little looser than some of his productions, but that's no bad thing.

Traders II (feat Rennie Foster)
Review: Last year's 3 AM Jazz Club 12" from Dan Shake was one of the most ubiquitous house records released and had a great story to back it, resulting from the producer allegedly handing Moodymann a CDr of productions during the 2013 edition of Dimensions. The rest, they say, is history, and Shake's next move brings him to Bristol outpost Black Acre for another 12" exercise in richly soulful music that will enlighten any dancefloor. Working with Kenny Dixon Jnr has obviously rubbed off some on the man Shake, with "Out Of Sight" blessed with the kind of loose, live sounding drums that seem all too absent from the palette of many contemporary producers. Things veer off into to jazzier territory on the flip with 'Traders II', a collaboration with Canadian based Rennie Foster that pairs a subtle acid bassline with a killer horn section. Review: On the back of 2 well received releases on Dirt Crew & Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings, Dutch native Nachtbraker drops a beauty on Hudd Traxx. Zachtjes kicks things off in fine melodical style with live drums, lush keys and a smooth sax lick for good measure. Borrowed Identity mixes things up on the remix tip with a more upbeat dubby tool which is likley to find it's way into the hands of DJ's like Derrick Carter & Prosumer. The title track 'You Is What You Aint' is a moody groover with slick keys and sleezy beats perfect for warm ups or end of the night vibes. Nachtbraker rounds off the EP nicely with Overstappen last, but by no means least. Skippy beats and a killer bassline ensure that this EP is another 'must have' for the Hudd faithful as they near 50 releases and 10 Years in the business.

A follow up to Nick Moore's fine 2009 debut System has been regularly alluded to by Firecracker boss Lindsay Todd within the context of the label's other releases. It wasn't until an unreleased Linkwood track appeared in Prosumer's fine fabric mix last year that the notion of a new Linkwood album began to take on a semblance of reality. We still can't quite believe it's happened, despite the rather dashing copies of Expression sitting pretty in the Juno warehouse. The New York-based producer is in fine form here, delivering a range of dusty, distorted, analogue-heavy jams. While the A-side boasts a couple of deeper explorations - see the woozy, stripped-back analogue soul of "I Feel You" and techno-tempo melodious fuzz of "Bridge" - it's the more uptempo flipside that most impresses.
